One of the top priorities for the Vander Waals was regaining the ability to milk their 1,500 Jerseys. Ed Herbst, General Manager at Sioux Dairy Equipment in Rock Valley, ar-

rived at the scene shortly after the storm had passed. “Walls were sitting askew and electrical service panels were torn loose, so we had to cut the power as a matter of safety,” said Herbst. “Our crew worked through the night, and we were able to get them milking again in about 12 hours.” The way the double-20 parallel parlor was constructed helped save the facility from suffering even more serious damage. “The parlor was built with a subway underneath it, so many of the critical components were protected,” said

Herbst. “All the major equipment was still in place, so we just had to do some plumbing and some rewiring to get the milking system back online.” A temporary roof cobbled together from lumber and tarps has been placed over the milking parlor to keep the weather off the milking crew. The Vander Walls milk 3x, so the parlor is usually running 22

hours each day. “We talked to our construction company and new rafters for the parlor area are already being built,” said Vander Waal. “Our goal is to get the parlor enclosed as soon as possible.
