SANDSTONE, Minn. – For those who know Bob Harris, they know he is a man who has had many near death experiences. At 71 years old, his latest encounter nearly did him in for good and left his family wondering what exactly happened on the early morning of July 1, 2019. What they do know is that a cow attacked Bob when he got off his side-byside to check a newborn calf. He sustained a badly beaten and bruised face and head, three broken vertebrae and bleeding of the brain. Bob helps his son, Nick, who milks 100 cows on his farm near Sandstone. “I’ve never been knocked out like that before,” Bob said. “The biggest thing is not being able to remember anything.” Bob and Nick started gathering cows for milking like they do every day at 5 a.m. July 1. Bob drove the side-by-side and Nick took the four-wheeler to the pasture to bring up the cows.

That morning, Bob got off the side-by-side. “For some reason that morning he got off to pick up a calf,” Nick said. “If a cow has a calf, he always calls me to come get it.” Bob was attacked from behind when he went to look at the calf. A random cow, not the calf’s mother, pushed him to the ground and rolled him into the dirt. From the top of the hill, Nick saw a gathering of cows where the side-by-side was parked. He ran over to Bob just as he tried to sit up. “I thought maybe he had tripped,” Nick said. “As I got closer, I could see he had blood all over his face.” Nick tried to help him sit up but Bob was in too much pain. “Luckily, the calf walked away and the cow followed it,” Nick said. Seeing his chance, Nick drove the side-by-side to the house to get help. Once they got to the pasture, Nick and his son, Lane, helped Bob onto the four-wheeler. They made it to the house, where Nick’s daughter, Audrey, had the pickup ready to bring Bob to the hospital. Turn to HARRIS | Page 3

MADISON, Wis. – The drastic changes the dairy industry has endured since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic spurred two young Wisconsin dairy enthusiasts to do something to positively affect not only the industry they love but the communities around them as well. “The dairy industry has drastically changed since the pandemic began,” Sydney Endres said. “With many places shut down, there are not enough homes for dairy products. Businesses in the entire dairy supply chain are taking a hit. Donating dairy helps move more product into homes, supporting the industry as a whole.” Problem-solvers by nature, Endres and her friend, Mariah Martin, decided to help create demand for dairy products by working to put them in the refrigerators of those who were food insecure. While that in itself has become a regular phenomenon throughout the Badger state in the past two months, the two put their own unique spin on creating a solution. “We are all aware that farmers and ranchers across our country are struggling as our food supply chain adapts to the current situation,” Martin said. “In addition, food banks are seeing a surge in demand paired with a drop in food donations.” Both Endres and Martin have been regular volunteers at the Second Turn to FUNDRAISER | Page 6

Seeing the need there and knowing what was happening in the dairy industry, an idea was born. “We also were seeing rst-hand how the pandemic was affecting the agriculture industry, especially dairy farmers,” Endres said. “Harry Hansen’s Meat Service in Franksville, Wisconsin, did something similar, and we piggy backed off of their idea. With our love for giving back and dairy products, we thought this was a great way to support our farmer families and friends while helping those in need.” The pair worked with a DeForest-based printer to create shirts with the slogan “Support Local Farmers,” which they made available in a variety of sizes and styles. All shirts were priced at $20 with all proceeds being used to purchase the dairy products for donation to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin, Wisconsin’s Adopt-A-Dairy-Cow program and Feeding America’s Great American Milk Drive. “Food banks always need more milk,” Martin said. “According to Feeding America, milk is one of the most requested items. More people than ever are relying on food pantries right now, and that demand will continue for months after businesses start opening back up.” The shirt sales were open for nine days. Initially, Endres and Martin hoped to sell 200 shirts, but after selling nearly 150 shirts in the rst 24 hours, they doubled that goal to 400 shirts. “We never expected to surpass that goal of 400 shirts, but we ended up tripling our original goal and sold 640 shirts,” Endres said. For now, the shirt sale is closed, but the pair has not ruled out opening the fundraiser back up if they experience a second wave of interest. “We’d gladly open sales back up to continue to support dairy farmers and give back,” Martin said. Endres concurred, and said the support their project received far exceeded her expectations. “People are just plain awesome,” Endres said. “We don’t have the nal numbers yet, but we hope to be able to give over $7,000 worth of dairy products to food banks in our communities and across the United States. We are so thankful to all that liked, shared and purchased these shirts to support our dairy farmers and to give to those in need.” Social media was the primary avenue Endres and Martin used to spread the word about their project.

Martin said. “For instance, once we sold 300 shirts, the three of us broadcasted a milk chugging challenge. We used our various networks at work as well as within the dairy industry and other agricultural organizations we are each involved with.â€? Endres and Martin said the support they received through the social media outlets surprised them. “It was amazing to see the support, not just from our family and friends but from complete strangers as well,â€? Endres said. “From our personal Facebook pages, we received over 150 shares. That doesn’t include those who shared, that we aren’t friends with or just didn’t see. The power of social media really became apparent to us, and it has been a great tool for us to share our message and our initiative.â€? While it might sound like a huge undertaking to create a product, develop a social media marketing plan, sell a product and spearhead a major donation of perishable products, Endres and Martin said project happened rather quickly. “In total, we spent about a week preparing and setting it up; then a week and a half for sales; once the shirts are printed, we’ll spend about another week shipping and delivering them,â€? Martin said. The two advocates ďƒžrst met during college through shared involvement in a variety of student organizations, and a friendship developed through their mutual love of all things agriculture. They even worked together to host an agricultural radio talk show during their time on campus. Endres, a native of Lodi, grew up and resides on her family’s Jazzy Jerseys dairy farm. She helps on the farm when she is not busy traveling for her work as an area representative and type traits appraiser for the American Jersey Cattle Association. Martin, a former Green County Dairy Queen, grew up with what she calls a strong dairy inďƒ&#x;uence, imparted on her by her parents and grandparents, other family members and friends. She has turned that upbringing into a passion for advocating for agriculture and the dairy industry as a marketing executive for Filament Marketing in Madison. “Since we have been limited in travel, seeing friends and family and just enjoying normal life, this project has kept us busy and kept our creative juices ďƒ&#x;owing,â€? Martin said.

“Maximizing Fertility While Minimizing Timed AI Use” is the featured topic for the next Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) webinar. The webinar starts at 2 p.m. Central time on June 5. Luis Mendonca, who recently joined the Merck Animal Health Ruminant Technical Services team, will serve as the instructor for this one-hour webinar. In addition, when the goal is to minimize the use of timed AI services, programs conducive to induce estrus should be considered. Also, Mendonca will discuss research study ndings that rely on strategies focused on inseminating a large proportion of lactating cows in estrus, instead of timed AI. DATCP, DFW partially lift state dairy assessment during COVID-19 federal disaster declaration MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (DFW) announced today that the state milk assessment will be lifted for disposed milk during the COVID-19 public health emergency, from May 14th, 2020 until the end of the federal major disaster declaration made by President Trump in April. This state order is not retroactive, so it does not apply to milk that has already been disposed of. “Wisconsin dairy farmers are facing unprecedented challenges due to COVID-19,” said DATCP Interim Secretary Randy Romanski. “We hope that temporarily lifting the state assessment on non-commercialized milk in this highly unusual situation will provide some relief to farmers or processors who may have to dispose of their product during this pandemic.” “As the producer-elected marketing board responsible for promoting Wisconsin’s dairy industry, we know COVID-19 has made times even tougher for many of our farmers,” added DFW CEO Chad Vincent. “Wisconsin dairy is and will continue to be a cornerstone of our agricultural economy. We’re proud to partner with DATCP in nding opportunities like this to support our farmers.” In Wisconsin, 10 cents per hundredweight of the total amount due to the farmer from the sale of their milk is collected by Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin. The funding generated by the state assessment is used for advertising and promotion, market research and development, industrial research, educational programs, and administrative costs. This week, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for 1:1 matching grants of up to $5,000 for qualied meat, poultry, egg, or milk processors. These funds are to be used either to increase storage capacity or processing capability for licensed custom exempt, Equal-to Minnesota, or USDA inspected facilities. Expenses related to general operation of the business, such as salary or benets are excluded from the program. Cassie Bohnert 13 years old Eighth grade When do you do chores, and what chores do you? I take care of weaned calves behind my house every day, and I do various miscellaneous chores all day long. Different tasks, like move the cows to and from the parlor, rake freestalls, vaccinate heifers, feed baby calves, move calves and haul round bales and much more. What are your favorite and least favorite chores? My favorite chore on the farm is denitely vaccinating dry cows and heifers. I love running the clipboard or giving shots. My least favorite chore is watering calves. It is an important chore, but I do not like dragging the hose out and lling up every single water bucket. Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My 5-year-old Jersey, Gillie, who is a Metallica, milking 96.4 pounds of milk and peaking at 104.2 pounds. I have shown Gillie ever since she was a fall heifer calf, and she was raised to 92 points. What is your favorite subject in school? Math; it comes easier than other subjects to me. What is something you have done academically while distance learning? I do my class work after morning chores every day during the week. Every day I have math, science, social studies, language arts assignments and gym. Although, my gym teacher says that much of the farm work I do qualies as gym class. What do you do want to be when you grow up? I either want to be a dairy farmer or a veterinarian when I grow up. The vets come to our farm every two weeks, and I love helping out on herd health day, giving shots to open cows. If you had your own farm, what would it look like? I want to have a 500plus head Jersey farm. It would have two freestall barns and eight groups of cows: fresh cows, dry cows, 2-year-old pen, conrmed pregnant group, cows that need to be bred pen, hospital and a bed pack pen for all the prefresh cows. Additionally, I will have a big heifer barn for all heifers from weaned to breeding age and a calf house for all the newborn calves up to weaning that can hold 80 calves. Finally, I will have a double-16 rapid-exit parlor to milk all of the cows three times a day in. What is your favorite dairy treat? Ice cream and thinly sliced Swiss cheese. What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the spring? Take care of the calves when they are born. I have even tubed a newborn that I couldn’t get to drink. I help with running the barn and overseeing the maternity barn when the guys are in the eld.

My favorite chore is taking care of my 4-H heifers, and my least favorite chore is picking up sticks. Thankfully, I don’t do that every day. Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My cow, Virgo, and her heifer calf, Velvet. I purchased Virgo at the All-American Pot of Gold Sale in 2018. What is your favorite subject in school? Math and P.E. What is something you have done academically while distance learning? Reading books and writing letters to my dairy farm friend who lives in Hilmar, California. Also adding and subtracting fractions. What do you do want to be when you grow up? A dairy farmer and a YouTuber. If you had your own farm, what would it look like? My own farm would have a 250-foot barn for pigs, with 10 acres of pasture; two 360-foot freestall barns for Jersey cows, with 100 acres of pasture; a 100-foot barn for horses and donkeys and 20 acres of pasture; 100-foot barn for goats, with 10 acres of pasture; a 50-foot chicken egg system, with 1 acre of pasture; 100-foot barn for lamas and alpacas and 15 acres of pasture; four dogs and seven cats; with two grain elevator systems, 3,000 acres of corn and soybeans, and 500 acres of hay; and two carousel milking parlors, 7,500-gallon manure pits, three machine sheds and one big farm house. What is your favorite dairy treat? Ice cream and white milk. What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the spring? Getting my show cows ready.

Six UW-River Falls faculty fellowships funded by state-sponsored Dairy Innovation Hub The University of Wisconsin-River Falls College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences recently awarded six faculty research fellowships to help increase dairy-related research capacity through the Dairy Innovation Hub initiative. The selected faculty members will tackle research projects in the hub’s four priority areas: stewarding land and water resources; enriching human health and nutrition; ensuring animal health and welfare; and growing farm business and communities. The Dairy Innovation Hub, which the state of Wisconsin is supporting to the tune of $1 million this year and $7.8 million per year in subsequent years, harnesses research and development at UW-Madison, UW-Platteville and UW-River Falls campuses to keep Wisconsin’s $45.6 billion dairy community at the global forefront in producing nutritious dairy products in an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable manner. A faculty research fellowship is a temporary position for permanent faculty members. The goal is to provide support for a specic research project and any ancillary costs – including ensuring that the faculty member will have time to conduct the research and support for existing teaching responsibilities. “Supporting increased research capacity for our current faculty members is a critical role for the Dairy Innovation Hub,” said Steven Kelm, professor of animal and food science, who leads the hub’s UWRF campus steering committee. “These six faculty fellows are
representative of the innovative members of the CAFES community. Their applied research projects come at a time when farmers need solutions to challenges now and in the longterm.” As farmers, processors and citizens move forward to recover from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, there has never been a greater need for evidence-based, highly implementable dairy research. With Dairy Innovation Hub support, CAFES has also selected recipients for capacitybuilding supplies and equipment. Boaitey is an assistant professor in the Agricultural Economics Department who teaches agricultural price and marketing courses. His research is focused on the economics of livestock production and consumption. Project name: Calf management practices, animal welfare and the social sustainability of the dairy industry – Jill Coleman Wasik, Plant and Earth Science Department. Coleman Wasik is an associate professor in the Plant and Earth Science Department. Her research interests include how human activity impacts the transport of nutrients and other contaminants through natural systems. The ultimate goal of her work is to understand how human activities benet from natural processes while also lessening their impacts on natural systems. – Veronica Justen, Plant and Earth Science Department. Justen is an associate professor of crop science in the Plant and Earth Science Department. She teaches courses on grain crop production, sustainable agriculture, plant breeding and genetics. Her research interests are in enhancing diversied crop rotations including cover crops and winter hardy small grains. She has been at UW-River Falls since 2010. Project name: Novel dairy cropping systems to enhance economic and environmental resilience of Wisconsin dairy farms – Sylvia Kehoe, Animal and Food Science Department Kehoe is a professor in the Animal and Food Science Department teaching a variety of courses related to dairy and nutrition. Project name: Improving the health and welfare of dairy calves – Patrick Woolcock, Agricultural Engineering Technology Department. Woolcock, an assistant professor in the Agricultural Engineering Technology Department, is a chemical engineer by training with research and development experience in energy, environmental remediation and other clean energy technologies.
