A new way of dairying Robotic milking with the MIone makes milking a consistent and predictable process. You’ll no longer worry about milkers not showing up for a shift, or “procedural drift” in the way your cows are prepped and milked.

Relief from physical labor — Automated processes and more efficient procedures for performing regular cow-management tasks will leave you more time to monitor herd performance. A little goes a long way for fresh cow comfort and performance
1. Hold nozzle 4 to 6 inches away. 2. Separate quarter from leg. 3. Move the bottle in a mostly downward sweeping motion while pulling the nozzle trigger. Normal application is 3 to 5 pulls per quarter, depending on udder size. For fresh animals, spray all 4 quarters. There’s no one silver bullet for milk quality and udder health, but getting animals off to a good start on their lactations sure helps set the stage for profitability. First-calf heifers: Continue 2x/day for 3 days; Multi-lactation cows: Continue 2x/day for 5 days post-calving.” Todd Hendrickson of Roadside Dairy, Preston, Minn., also uses Udder Comfort faithfully for fresh animals after calving.
“By removing swelling, they recover and come into milk faster and milk out better,” he says. The 160-cow herd has an 85-lb herd average and SCC of 70,000. At Mesa Farms, Milford, Wis., “All fresh cows get udders sprayed after the a.m. and p.m. milkings for the first 3 days after calving. If they bag up big before calving, we spray pre-fresh udders in the maternity pen. This routine has decreased our need for other measures,” says Patrick Mess. The 100-cow dairy has a 93 lbs/cow/day herd average and SCC at 175,000.

Fire destroys 100-year-old barn
Forty-four cows safely removed from Stearns County structure NEW MUNICH, Minn. – A re destroyed a 100-year-old barn when it was engulfed in ames about 7:30 p.m. on May 3. The farm is located near New Munich, Minn., in Stearns County. Two nearby re departments, Melrose and Freeport, responded to the re. The 44 dairy cows were safely removed from the burning barn. The farm site is owned by Luverne Hinnenkamp of Melrose, Minn. and rented by Kevin Bauer, also of Melrose. Bauer said his employee, Randy Bolter, nished milking the cows

around 7 p.m. Saturday night and went to the Bauers’ home farm to help with other chores. Upon hearing about the re, Bauer drove to the farmsite where he saw ames shooting high into the sky. He and Melrose reghters were able to get the 44 cows out of the barn. In addition to putting out the ames, reghters worked to protect the surrounding structures. “With the wind going towards the house – that was the biggest hazard,” said Melrose re chief, Jeremy Kraemer. “Otherwise, it was fought defen-
sively and from the outside since the building was so compromised.” Due to the proximity to Interstate 94, Minnesota State Patrol Troopers were dispatched to assist with trafc control along with Stearns County Sheriff’s Ofce Deputies. The Melrose Ambulance was dispatched to standby at the scene and transported one reghter to the Melrose Hospital after that reghter was struck in the head by falling debris. On Sunday, Kraemer said that reghter was doing ne. Fire departments transported water from Melrose. Close to 40 reghters were on scene for over four hours; the last ones leaving around 2:45 a.m. Sunday morning. The barn and dairy equipment were insured. Kraemer explained the re started in a piece of equipment on the north side of the building. “We used the burn pattern to bring us to the re source,” he said. On Sunday afternoon, reghters were back at the scene, putting out hotspots, as family watched. The cows were moved to the Bauer home place and will continue to be milked there. “We thank everyone who helped haul the cows to the home farm,” Bauer said. Staff report
