Crop and weather conditions in Dairy Star country. SOUTH DAKOTA We have 250 acres of corn planted and 500 to go. I use 200 acres of a silage variety that’s 105-day corn. We plant that last. Some guys are getting done with corn and working the ground for soybeans, but I haven’t seen anybody planting soybeans yet. We didn’t seed any alfalfa because we seeded quite a bit BOB FREDRICKSON last year and have plenty. We only had one inch of rain last week. We Arlington, SD (Brookings Co.) are going through all the potholes 200 cows, 1,500 acres and everything is working great, but the alfalfa and pastures need some rain.
CENTRAL MINNESOTA We just started hauling manure yesterday (May 6). We probably have hauled 30 loads the last two days. I am starting on the pit tomorrow. One neighbor seeded in some alfalfa today, but the fields are wet. We had 3.75 inches of rain last week. I hope to plant alfalfa next week DANIEL ROERICK and corn right afterwards. We do a longer-day variety corn, 95-102, and Burtrum, MN (Morrison Co.) in my opinion you get a little better 80 cows, 220 acres crop. We’ll chop the majority of it. We don’t do any dry corn.
I think we’re the first to go into the field. We took our 2870 Case and six-bottom plow and plowed over 20 acres today (May 6). I had some corn stubble we spread manure on and we were turning over frost. We’ve had lots of little snows that haven’t amounted to much moisture, and then we received two inches on April 25. Nobody has been able to plant anything yet. We might adjust our plans for planting to get in the field earlier.

We probably have 150 acres of corn planted. That’s about half done. We plant 40 acres of BMR and 30 acres of a forage quality silage. We have two or three more days of corn planting left and then we’ll switch over to soybeans. We are also hauling some manure now. The alfalfa needs some heat. It looks good. We ended up with three inches of rain last week and just missed a thunderstorm this morning (May 7).
EASTERN IOWA We are out seeding our alfalfa into the rye fields that we planted last fall. The rye is growing pretty slow and isn’t greening up too fast; it needs some warm weather. The hay isn’t even four inches tall right now. We have 25 of 140 acres of alfalfa to plant. I’ve seen a few corn planters going. We got 2.5 inches of rain last week and are real good with moisture. We have a lot of manure to haul.
We haven’t turned a wheel. Last week we got three inches of rain and we have thunderstorms coming tomorrow (May 7) and Thursday. We have the heavy soil so everything we dried and gained the last few days we’ll lose with the rain. It’s not uncommon to plant corn around the 20th to Memorial Day. There have only been a couple times we’ve been done planting by our anniversary (May 9). I spent today moving a 9- by 115-foot silage bag blowing it in the silo. A neighbor had it for sale and the price was right.

NORTHWESTERN WISCONSIN We’re moving our manure piles that we had from the winter, but still haven’t started our liquid manure. We had about three inches of rain last week and the alfalfa looks good. I’ve seen some combines taking corn out that was in all winter. There is some tillage being done by the Red FRED BROKER Cedar River, but there’s sand along Rice Lake, WI that. Near Cameron and Chetek the (Barron Co.) vegetable guys are going. Otherwise 150 cows, 270 acres we have been busy in the shop. We put auto steer on one of our tractors that we’re going to try.

We haven’t moved a tractor in two weeks. The fields are getting close. Maybe tomorrow (May 7) we can haul manure. I went to Willmar today and there was one field being worked but on the way home they were out of the field and there was mud on the road. The alfalfa looks good. The JAN ZUIDEMA agronomist was out today and said Blomkest, MN there were lots of plants per square (Kandiyohi Co.) foot. It looks really nice. We had four 60 cows, 350 acres inches of rain last week and when you put that on top of the 10 inches of snow we had, it’s wet.
We’ve had about 3/4 of an inch of rain the last two weeks, but we’re still very dry. Everybody is planting corn and there might be a few guys starting on soybeans. We are done with corn. We put about 50 acres of midrib in BILL KOOIKER otherwise everything else is for Orange City, IA grain. The alfalfa is just starting (Sioux Co.) to poke thru the dirt. We seeded 350 cows, 1,000 acres that over three weeks ago. We spray it on, harrow it in and then pack it.
I got done seeding oats underseeded with alfalfa today (May 6). We started Sunday and have been hitting it pretty hard since. We’ll go into corn either Friday or Saturday. A lot of neighbors are planting small grains, and some of them are planting corn. RON KANNEL I plan on planting a 100-day silage Elmwood, WI variety and a 96-day grain variety. (Pierce Co.) Last year we lost 75 percent of our 60 cows, 400 acres hay. This year I was scouting the fields and it all looks good.

There is a lot of diesel fuel being burned in this area now. It’s been nice since Saturday. It’s been windy and the ground has dried nicely. There are no wet holes. I planted an alfalfa and grass mix today, and I saw the corn planters are starting to go. If the weather holds I will be starting corn in the next couple days. The hay looks really good. It’s suppose to warm up this week so it should really kick into gear. We had over three inches of rain last week.
