Pursuing their dreams Vollraths farming for seven years after starting from scratch By Brittany Olson

MILLTOWN, Wis. – Jeff Vollrath knew he wanted to be a dairy farmer when he was 4 years old. “I didn’t grow up on a farm, but my Uncle Jeff farmed down the road. He had ve kids and didn’t need the extra help, but I helped him anyway,” Jeff said. That drive to dairy farm at a young age helped Jeff start a farm of his own. Jeff, with his wife, Ellen, milk 50 cows just south of Milltown, Wis., with their two young children, August, 2, and Grace, 8 months. Their daily average milk yield is 70 pounds per cow, per day with a 4.1 percent butterfat, 3.4 percent protein and a somatic cell count of 90,000. The herd consists of registered Holsteins and a few Jersey and Brown Swiss crosses. “I like variety, and Jeff just likes his Holsteins,” Ellen said, chuckling. After working with his uncle, and for family friend Ken Johnson near Cushing, Wis., Jeff decided to set out on his own in 2009. That spring, he planted crops to make feed and rented a 31-stall barn from a neighbor of his uncle’s.

The Vollraths, who started their own herd in 2009, are averaging 70 pounds of milk per cow per day with a 4.1 percent fat, 3.4 percent protein and a soma�c cell count of 90,000. Milk prices were beginning to creep back up after the infamous price crash some months earlier. “I had no overhead other than the cows, and I was just renting, so it wasn’t too bad starting out,” Jeff said.
Six months into his farming career, Ken Johnson’s daughter, Mary Holle, introduced Jeff to a friend of hers from UW-River Falls named Ellen. “I grew up on a 600-cow dairy
farm south of Green Bay,” Ellen said. “I thought it was just trees and such in [northwestern Wisconsin].” Turn to VOLLRATHS | Page 3

scrape manure. I’ve learned more from Ellen than anyone else,” Jeff said. Ellen, who had interned with MilkSource Genetics in college, grew up showing cattle and had always been interested in genetics. She also worked for Macland Holsteins in Elgin, Minn. The couple began to amplify their focus on sound breeding, and picked a breeding prex that harkened to a nearby landmark. “Our Holstein prex is Soo Line, named after the old railroad that is now the Gandy Dancer State Trail,” Ellen said. Jeff added that their herd outgrew the 31-stall barn quickly. As their herd grew, so did their family. “August was born on December 30, 2014, and we bought this farm on December 31,” Jeff said. The Vollraths quickly took one step back after two very big steps forward. “Milk prices crashed right after August was born and we bought the farm,” Jeff said. “Honestly, 2015 was harder when milk went from $26 to $13 than it was in 2009.” Right now, Jeff and Ellen are switching cows in and out of the barn. Facilities that haven’t seen a facelift since the 1960s are showing their age. “We’d love to buy cattle for the genetics, but we feel bad bringing them here when our switch cows stay
outside,” Ellen said. Jeff added that they’re working on growing their genetics from within. “We’re just continuing to pick good bulls,” Jeff said. Later this spring, the Vollraths’ new plan is to begin renting a 40-stall barn four miles away and milk in two barns to temporarily eliminate the hassle of having their switch cows outside all the time. “No one wants to milk in two barns, but it’ll work for now,” Jeff said. “I’ll milk in the rented barn, and Ellen will milk here.” Eventually, Jeff and Ellen want to buy his Uncle Jeff’s farm and build a freestall barn sized for 100 cows. “We don’t want to get bigger than we have to,” Ellen said. “It’s enough for the two of us to handle by ourselves.” Jeff and Ellen once received an offer to work with her family’s farm on the other side of the state, but are happy to be in Jeff’s hometown and raising August and Grace on the farm. “We’ve got big dreams here, and we want to be successful on our own,” Ellen said Even August, at the age of 2, can be found pushing scrapers and keeping an eye on his parents’ cows. “I milk cows with Daddy,” he said, his face beaming. “My middle name is August, one of my uncle’s middle name is August, and my grandpa’s middle name is August plus my great grandpa’s rst name is August. That’s where we got the name for my son,” Jeff said. “My great grandpa was a Wisconsin Master Farmer back in the 1920s or 1930s and sold high quality heifers as far away as California. I honesty believe farming is in my blood.” Considering their successes, they are grateful to those who have helped along the way. “Our veterinarian, friends, and so many others have been good to us. We’re surrounded by good people,” Jeff said.
Keep equipment safety in mind as you prepare for spring planting
The rst ofcial day of spring has come and gone, and it’s time to start thinking about spring planting. Spring is a busy time of year, and a time to be thinking about farm safety and more specically, equipment safety. Tractors and large eld equipment are the most common causes of farm accidents, injuries, and deaths. They are a necessary part of farm work, but exercising caution when using them is crucial in preventing accidents. First and foremost—read the safety information. Pay attention to any safety or warning decals on the equipment. Before operation, be sure to inspect the equipment for any safety hazards. During inspection, also identify all safety hazards including: moving parts, pinch points, crush points, pull-in areas, and free-wheeling areas. Be sure anyone who is going By Emily Wilmes to be using the equipment is aware of these areas as well. U of M Extension While using the equipment, keep bystanders—especially children—away from the equipment operation area. Before approaching equipment for an inspection or repair, shut it down, turn off the engine, remove the key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. This is the only time you should be removing any safety devices, such as shields from the equipment. When any work you were doing is completed, safety devices should be put back on before equipment operation resumes. In addition, be mindful when using public roadways. Use lights and ashers to ensure you are easy for drivers to see and have a slow-moving emblem on your tractor and equipment. It is Minnesota law for all vehicles travelling under 30 miles per hour on public roadways to have an emblem displayed. You may also consider using a following vehicle when moving large pieces of equipment, especially at night. Proper safety precautions on the roads keep not only you, but the other people using the road, safe. We cannot control how other drivers may react to farm equipment being on the road, but it is vital that farmers are doing whatever they can to keep everyone safe. Farm equipment is a dangerous part of farming, but following safety guidelines, keeping others away from the operation area, and using public roads in a safe manner will keep us all out of harm’s way. Evolving over 115 years Elba Co-op Creamery continues to make changes to serve patrons By Krista Kuzma

ELBA, Minn. – Although the number of businesses in Elba amounts to a handful, the ones that dot Highway 74 through the small town with 150 people have stood the test of time, with most dating back to the turn of the 19th century or earlier. One of those businesses is the Elba Cooperative Creamery. For the past 115 years,
Elba Cooperative Creamery has been serving dairy farmers in Winona County from its home base two miles outside of Whitewater State Park, nestled in the valley among the bluffs in the town of in Elba, Minn. Although the cooperative no longer processes the milk, it still purchases the product from farmers and contracts with Associated Milk Producers Association. “We try to provide what the farmers need for their business and try to do it in an ef-

To serve the community, the cooperative also sells feed, seed and dairy products. Its history dates back to 1902 when a group of dairy farmers in the area gathered together to nd a way to process their milk. They decided making butter was their answer, paying farmers 2.5 cents per pound for cream to make their product. It sold under the brand Whitewater State Butter to area farmers and businesses. Eventually, the creamery sold butter in bulk and shipped much of it to Chicago. The farmers used wood to construct the rst building for the creamery along the river to use the water as power. After that building burned in 1932, the creamery built a new facility on the south edge of town in 1933. The inside had two storage tanks, two butter churns and a track for milk cans. Butter churned out of the creamery until 1972.

“At that time, Elba had no sewer system and the [Minnesota] Pollution Control kept nding extra protein in the ground, so we either had to come up with a sewer system or quit making butter,” Potter said. The expense of the project was too great for the creamery, so it found a different way to continue serving its dairy farmers.
“We still bought milk from the farms, and over the years resold it to other processors,” Potter said. That’s still what the creamery does today, contracting its milk with its current processor for the past 10 years. Potter said. When the creamery stopped making butter, the board of directors thought they should make use of the building. In 1974, the creamery started selling feed. Eleven years later, it also added a seed business. Despite both of these additions, dairy has always been the creamery’s money maker. “They’re the reason we’re here,” Potter said about the dairy farmers who sell milk to Elba Co-op Creamery. “They’re our No. 1 asset. Last year we had $29 million in sales and $24 million of that was milk.” When Potter rst started with the

op for 30 years. The third generation farmer milks 110 cows with this brother, Steve, near St. Charles, Minn. “It’s a good place to be,” said Wendt, who is also a board member for the co-op. “They treat us good. They always go the extra mile and the farmer

always comes rst.” For some members, a 30year tenure with the co-op is just the beginning of their relationship. Potter said there are a few families who date back to the rst years the creamery started. “It’s like we’re a big family,” Potter said. That’s the atmosphere Potter likes to create for the creamery. “It’s the community,” Pot-
ter said about what makes the cooperative unique. “People like the Whitewater valley and like to come here. For some, it’s been their home for many generations.” Potter said despite not processing its own milk, the creamery is still competitive in the market. “We try to be efcient and get a good price for our producers,” Potter said. “Our forefathers set us up nancially, so
we are able to operate without borrowing money.” In the future, Potter hopes to keep expanding the business when it is able. Last year, it added two new warehouses to store seed in St. Charles, Minn. “We always hope to provide for our farmers,” Potter said. With a 115-year history, that future looks bright.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – “What is the best way to contact my legislature?” “Is it difcult to retain labor?” “What are we going to do?” Those were all questions that lled a room of dairy producers. As fear of the unknown continues to grow with the dairy industry’s workforce, Laurie Fischer provided a glimpse of hope during the seminar, “Capitol Hill is Knocking At Your Door: Does Dairy Policy Keep You Up At Night?” March 29 at the Central Plains Dairy Expo in Sioux Falls, S.D. “It’s going to take a movement of us,” said Fischer, CEO of American Dairy Coalition. “We’ve been trying for 22 years to get something passed. How much longer can we wait? We can’t.” Fischer founded the coalition two years ago to serve as a voice for
agriculture when federal policies are discussed, formed and implemented. As immigration reform edges closer to lawmakers’ agenda, the coalition is pushing for legislative action that does not hinder the dairy industry by eliminating the workforce. “Our goal is that our dairymen throughout the country have the labor force they need,” Fischer said. For Dorothy Elliot and her family, immigration has shaped Drumgoon Dairy in Lake Norden, S.D. The Ireland natives moved to South Dakota in 2006, and currently use J-1 and TN2 visa programs to obtain labor. “My experience with immigration has been a good one. We’ve been able to come here and have our business,” Elliot said. “But we need to reform our policies to recruit and retain the people that come to work with us on the farm.” As Jeff Sessions was appointed to U.S. Attorney

General, Fischer knew immigration reform was going to be difcult – and that was proven as undocumented immigrants were categorized as criminals by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under President Trump’s executive order. The term criminal has
yet to be clearly dened – it could be only associated with felony offenses or affect everyone with a misdemeanor trafc violation, Fischer said. While raids have been minimal, authorities have arrived searching for a particular individual and have detained other
undocumented workers in the process. “There’s a lot of fear,” Fischer said. “ICE doesn’t realize how important those people are to us and how long those people have worked for us.” It has become evident Turn to LABOR | Page 9

that until policy is changed, the future of the dairy industry is at risk. Currently, there are many policies that are being formulated by the American Dairy Coalition. However, Fischer does not see one specic bill moving forward into law. “We’re putting tools in the toolbox,” Fischer said. “We’re moving everything we can, as much as we can, until we get to a place that allows our dairy businesses to sustain their operation, and grow their operations if they choose.” One bill that Fischer hopes to inuence is a state-sponsored visa program, approved by the federal government but implemented at the state level. The program would work alongside current visa programs and allow states to sponsor existing foreign labor to legally live and work within the state borders. Each state that wishes to participate would be given 2,500 visas to work with, and up to an additional 2,500 depending on the population. “With this, you are ensured you have that workforce,” Fischer said. “If a worker is registered through the state visa program under the dairy industry, they have to remain in the dairy industry.” Fischer is also urging legislatures to reevaluate the H2A visa program for temporary work in agriculture. “In Wisconsin alone, there are roughly 80,000 undocumented workers, a portion of those involved in dairy,” Fischer said. “It will take four years to get all of them enrolled in some kind of

work visa program.” Producers can help by contacting their district representatives and senators via phone calls, emails and town hall meetings. “To move a bill, we are going to need you to be able to call legislators. All you have to say is that you need to have a labor force,” Fischer said. “We will give them the bills and bring producers out to D.C.” Inuencing the legislators may be a difcult task as those individuals are not visiting the farms and seeing the impact immigrant workers have on a dairy. “We’re really good at talking about our issues amongst each other, but tend to get quiet talking to legislators,” Fischer said. “If we don’t make noise, they will continue to hear from those that do.” In the meantime, producers can also work with their employees – encouraging them to act responsibly on the farm and in the community, establishing rideshares from the farm into town, looking for ways of becoming legal, and keeping them calm. “We are seeing an impact on our labor because of what’s going on and we’ve had to make some changes on the farm to accommodate that,” Elliot said. Fischer agreed. “Talk to your employees, show them the items we’re working on,” she said. “Make them trust you that you’re doing what you can to help them stay here and be legal.” As lawmakers nd common ground, and also as immigrant children reach the age of voting eligibility, Fischer is condent a resolution can be reached. Although, there will certainly be obstacles ahead as the industry prepares for the future. “There’s always going to be the need to milk cows,” Elliot said. “To do that, we will need to automate, be forced to outsource,or we need to x our labor problem.”

Are dairies in the I-29 corridor sustainable?
Cady presents seminar about efciencies during CPDE By Krista Kuzma

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – During a time when more and more management practices are being taken away from dairy farmers, many in the industry, including Roger Cady, are looking at ways to make dairy even more sustainable. Cady, a senior technical consultant for Elanco, gave a presentation March 29 called, “A Case Study On How Innovation Is Positively Impacting the I-29 Dairy Corridor,” during the Central Plains Dairy Expo in Sioux Falls, S.D. “I’m here telling the story of sustainability and using the I-29 corridor at the end,” he said. According to Cady, there are three pillars of sustainability: economic, environmental and social or cultural acceptance. “It’s a balance between all three,” said Cady, whose seminar focused on the environmental pillar. Cady said agriculture takes a larger blame for greenhouse gas emission from other people despite the industry ranking fourth behind electricity, transportation, and industry and manufacturing. “The environmental footprint of all agriculture in the United States is not much bigger than us just living in our houses,” he said, with each being 6 percent and 4 percent, respectively. Despite this fact, along with North America having the lowest greenhouse
footprint compared to the rest of the world, consumers and activists are still demanding more sustainable practices from agriculture. Cady thinks this is partially pushed by the stats put out by the University of Arkansas that shows the environmental footprint of a gallon of milk in the United States. In the graph, 72 percent of the environmental footprint in the gallon happens at the farm level. “The activists like to say … ‘You need to do something about that.’ So the retailers feel that pressure, but there’s less opportunity for them to reduce their environmental footprint [at their level] so they turn to the farms,” Cady said. “This is where the opportunity is and where we need to move forward.” Cady explained that key environmental pieces – earth, wind, re and water – are changing. Global warming is occurring and climate change is happening, too. It is affecting the environment we live in. Cady said he’s most concerned about the land, which takes up 26 percent of the Earth. Of that land, 16 percent is non-ag land, while 10 percent is used for agriculture. Seven percent is used for grassland and pasture, and 3 percent is tillable. By 2050, Cady estimated that number to decrease to 2 percent tillable land. Cady said by 2050, the world population will increase from its current 7.23 billion people and more of those people will live in cities. This means more mouths to feed on fewer acres. “What this means is that if we don’t
solve this issue of efcient food production we are looking at more global conict than we have right now. And that global conict is going to be suffered by our children. We’re going to hit a crisis sooner rather than later if we don’t get this gured out,” Cady said. The solution lies in energy, Cady said, particularly in nutrient intake. If less of the nutrients are used on maintaining the cow, more can be used for productive functions. Cady used the example of a cow that has to walk 1 mile round trip to the parlor three times a day. “That’s a fair amount of energy she’s using to move that 1,500-pound or greater body versus a cow that has to walk maybe 100 feet,” Cady said. More walking requires more energy, which requires more feed, leading to a less efcient cow. Other areas that are similar are growth rate, milk components, replacement programs and reproductive performance. “We can reduce the environmental footprint by having better efciencies in all those metrics,” Cady said. In the beef industry, Cady said more farmers are looking for a smaller-sized animal. “A 1,600-pound cow takes much more energy than a 1,200-pound cow,” he said. Another example of resources being wasted is when a rst-calf heifer makes it to calving but doesn’t make it into the herd. “Unless she goes for beef, that’s several tons of feed gone,” Cady said. In Cady’s study of dairy farms along the I-29 corridor in South Dakota, the rolling herd average increased from 20,500 pounds of milk in 2010 to 23,100 pounds of milk in 2016, an average 428-pound in-
crease per cow per year. In the rest of the United States, that number only averaged an increase of 262 pounds of milk per cow per year during the same time period. “Now, the I-29 corridor, from a milk yield perspective, is more efcient than the rest of the nation,” Cady said. Cady calculated it out from a gallon of milk standpoint. The increase in milk production meant 49,800 fewer cows, which saved 672,370 tons of feed that freed up 217 square miles of land on which the feed would have been raised. It also saved 20.1 billion gallons of water or the equivalent of 36,400 households, and also reduced greenhouse gas emissions to the equivalent of 130,400 cars. There was also a decrease in manure by 972,040 tons or the same amount of waste produced by 5.3 million people. In his study, Cady found that the I-29 corridor is more efcient in milk, components, age of rst calving, mastitis culls and days dry than dairies in the rest of the United States. There is opportunity for the area’s dairies to improve on rst lactation culls and pregnancy rate. “Sustainability is not about organic versus conventional. All that sets up is conict. The place where people can agree is continuous improvement,” Cady said. According to Cady, that is happening in the I-29 corridor. “Overall the I-29 corridor has taken off in regards to what it’s going to take to reduce the environmental footprint of dairy production in the United States,” Cady said. “For those in the I-29 corridor, pat yourselves on the back for a job well done. You are among the leaders in the country and are moving towards a more sustainable milk source.”

Harringa named 62nd South Dakota Dairy Princess

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Krista Harringa has wanted to be South Dakota Dairy Princess ever since she was a little girl. On March 28, her childhood dream came true when she was crowned 62nd South Dakota Dairy Princess at a ceremony as part of the Central Plains Dairy Expo held at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
“I was very shocked and very emotional,” Harringa said regarding the moment when Carrie Weaver, 61st South Dakota Dairy Princess, placed the crown on her head. “I was overwhelmed with joy. All I could think was ‘Wow.’” Harringa is the 18-year-old daughter of Royce and Kim, who farm near Brandt, S.D. Stephanie Ponto was named runner-up and is the daughter of Steven and Vonda, who operate a dairy near Watertown, S.D.

Other Dairy Princess candidates this year included Sarah Jarman, daughter of Wayne and Julie, who dairy farm near Wilmot, S.D.; and Mikalyn Pershing, daughter of Shannon and Jimmy, who operate a dairy near Goodwin, S.D. The South Dakota Dairy Princess receives a $1,000 scholarship along with a $500 clothing stipend. The runner-up is awarded a $500 scholarship.
In addition, the Midwest Dairy Association South Dakota Division awarded each dairy princess candidate a $250 scholarship. Harringa is a graduate of Deubrook High School and is currently a freshman at South Dakota State University where she is majoring in ag communications with minors in journalism and political science. She has been active in 4-H and FFA and was an assistant superinten-
dent of the SDSU Little International dairy judging contest. She is also a member of the SDSU Dairy Club and Sigma Alpha. This summer, Harringa will have a summer internship as an activity coordinator with the SDSU 4-H Youth Development Program. Harringa’s mom said she remembers her daughter talking about her dream. “As she was growing up,

ConƟnued from HARRINGA | Page 14 Krista kept telling me all the time that she wanted to be Dairy Princess,” Kim said. “And I had to keep telling her that she was too young and would have to wait.” Harringa’s desire to be Dairy Princess was sparked by a lifelong friendship with a previous South Dakota Dairy Princess. “Sarah (Johnson) Sapp, who was South Dakota Dairy Princess in 2004, used to babysit me,” Harringa said. “Her parents, Mark and Pam, and my parents are friends, so we have known each other for a long time. She would show me her crown and her sash and tell me what it was like to be Dairy Princess. I was in awe when I heard about all the people she met and all the places she went. I looked up to Sarah and wanted to have a positive impact on the dairy industry like she’d
had. Sarah was a huge inuence in my decision to become a Dairy Princess candidate.” Harringa showed a deep passion for the dairy industry at an early age. “My sister, Kayla, is two years older than me,” Harringa said. “When Kayla began to show dairy cattle, I wanted to show cattle, too, but my parents kept telling me that I was too young. I had to wait until I was 7 years old before I got to show my rst dairy calf.” Her dad can attest to this young passion. “Krista has always had a strong afnity for cows,” Royce said. Royce and Kim milked 140 head until last August, when health issues forced them to sell their milking herd. They continue to raise bred Holstein heifers and
dairy steers, and may resume milking at some point in the future. “There were some animals that I would show as junior heifers and would continue to show over the years until they became mature cows,” Harringa said. “It was fun to see how an individual animal could develop and change as time went by. I became very attached to many of my show cattle.” Harringa made innumerable new connections in the dairy industry during her many years of showing and judging dairy cattle. But she feels growing up on a dairy farm was by far the best preparation for her upcoming role as Dairy Princess. She has many fond memories of her childhood, which includes helping her parents care for their animals and simply being a dairy farm kid.
“I remember how my sister and I would splash around in the water tank,” Harringa said. “We kept at it until Dad nally got us a real swimming pool.” “That tank was just a small one that held the water from our plate cooler, so it always had warm water,” Royce said with a smile. Harringa has plans for her yearlong reign as South Dakota Dairy Princess. “I hope to do lots of classroom visits,” she said. “I want to reach out to the kids and educate them about all aspects of dairy farming. I am also looking forward to connecting with consumers and to being the voice of reason for the dairy industry during this coming year. I am extremely honored and very pleased to be chosen to represent our state’s dairy industry.”

Today, 10 to 15 percent of all born dairy females are being genomic tested. “Without much information, everyone looks to be the same without genetic merit,” Boyle said. “For example, if you are looking at kids, you cannot tell which one is smartest or can run the fastest.” Genomics dives into the information that cannot be seen. Looking at the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), genomic testing identies the genetic information associated with desirable or undesirable characteristics. Identifying animals with less desirable traits can increase a herd’s protability and genetic progress. “It allows the farmer to separate the superior from the inferior animals. Genomics is a high reliability prediction that helps herds make that progress faster,” Boyle said. Until last year, genomics only gave insight to a calf’s potential production, reproductive abilities, type, health, milk components, infertility and similar genetic conditions. Since
March 2016, however, six wellness traits have been added, allowing farmers to predict a calf’s potential for mastitis, lameness, metritis, retained placenta, displaced abomasum and ketosis. According to Boyle, the American Dairy Science Association conducted a study which showed genetics as a part of the variation in health traits. Upon their ndings, the six wellness traits were identied as having some level of heritability. “We think that the major causes for these diseases is environmental; cows are not meant for concrete – the environment is poor. The reality is, they all have a heritable component to them,” Boyle said. “They are costly diseases; not just from the milk that is lost but because of the likelihood of that cow leaving the herd prematurely.” While wellness traits indicate the genetic risk factors for these six common and often costly traits, it also provides a selection index called the Dairy Wellness Prot (DWP$). This index incorporates economically important traits – including the wellness traits – to make comprehensive, protable genetic selection decisions. “It allows farmers to make better decisions early in life, proactively choose which heifers to raise and eventually prioritize breeding decisions,” Boyle said. Zoetis recently completed a yearlong validation study on the wellness traits and the impact the test had on overall herd health. Of the nearly 700 animals in numerous herds from across the country, animals showed 64 percent fewer retained placentas, 45 percent lower instances of metritis, 94 percent less displaced abomasum, 53 percent less instances of ketosis, 47 percent less instances of mastitis and 33 percent lower occurrences of lameness issues. Boyle said information like this is groundbreaking. “People always thought DAs were only environmental and now this has been found to be a highly predictive tool for that. Mastitis was cut nearly in half,” Boyle said. “I expect predictions from this data set to grow as time goes on, but for year one, we are very satised.” Boyle concluded the presentation when he said capitalizing on the DWP$ is a way to get the most out of genomic testing. While it correlates to the Net Merit Index approximately 90 percent, DWP$ can help producers to improve upon the top margin of animals. “Genetic selection works,” Boyle said. “It is looking very good, and we expect it to get better as we get second lactation information.” Breeding for the longevity and health of an invisible cow is the goal. Genomic tests are a way to make better breeding decisions that lead to a more protable herd, not only in the bulk tank, but in the vet bill as well.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I have been involved in 4-H since fourth grade. I show dairy and participate in dairy judging. When I entered high school, I joined FFA. In FFA I show dairy cattle and am involved in dairy judging. I served as the reporter for the South Winn FFA chapter and currently serve as the vice president. Along with FFA and 4-H, I am involved in the Iowa Holstein Association.
you from working hard to earn it. Not matter what your goal might be, nothing can stop you from achieving or doing something you are passionate about. Who do you look up to and why? I look up to my dad because he is the strongest person I know and can handle anything thrown his way. He’s also the funniest person I know. No matter how busy he is, he is always willing to drop everything and lend someone a helping hand. I can only hope to one day be as strong-minded, generous and passionate about my work as he is.
Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? These organizations have allowed me the opportunity to be involved in the agriculture industry, which has taught me new things about agriculture. They have also given me the opportunity to improve my leadership skills, and I also get to promote agriculture. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. During our school’s homecoming the past two years the FFA ofďƒžcer team as put on an Ag Olympics. It’s always my favorite activity because we are able to get the whole school involved, not just ag kids and FFA members. Everyone always has a great time competing while learning more about agriculture. What’s your favorite social media and why? Facebook because I can connect with people around the world. I can learn about agriculture worldwide and so can others.
Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I am willing to make a fool of myself to make somebody smile and brighten their day. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. ARGYLE, Wis. – First generation dairy farmer Joe Nickels has never shied away from trying something new. Having been raised on a beef farm as a child, Nickels had never owned a dairy cow when he decided to enter the business in 2004. Today, Nickels, his wife, Melissa, and two children,
Troy, 15, and Nathan, 13, are allowing robots to relieve some of the workload. On March 22, Nickels began using four GEA Monobox robots in addition to his double-10 parlor to milk his 340-cow herd in Argyle, Wis. There was never a question of Nickels’ desire to farm. When he decided to start his career as a dairy farmer, he was actually

working in town while raising beef cattle. “I wanted to be a fulltime farmer; I didn’t foresee that happening raising beef, so I decided to go into dairy farming,” Nickels said. Nickels purchased his farm in 2000. The farm contained a machine shed and stanchion barn that Nickels thought could be repurposed in his career transition. After retrotting the stanchion barn to t a double-10 parallel parlor and converting the machine shed into a 75-stall freestall barn in the summer of 2004, Nickels began milking 80 cows that began his dairying career. As time went on, Nickels’ herd grew. When his herd exceeded the size of the freestall barn, he put up a new freestall barn to expand

his options. As he was determining his choice of robots, Nickels was also considering facility options. While open space on the farm made a new freestall barn a considerable choice, Nickels determined it wasn’t the best use of his nances and resources. “On April 1, we started moving dirt to add onto the freestall. We added on 36 additional stalls on one end, and 51 stalls for breeding heifers and another 39 for dry cows on the other end,” Nickels said. Four free-ow robots were also added to the freestall. his herd in 2006. He added onto the barn twice more, once in 2010 and again in 2016, into the 118-foot by 320-foot, naturally ventilated freestall barn that stands today. Although he continued to use the parlor, Nickels said robots were always under consideration. With seven employees on the farm and the increasing challenge of nding labor, he saw robots as a solution to his problem. “We always thought about robots; in the last year and a half, we started to consider them a little more seriously,” Nickels said. Nickels looked into several brands before deciding which robots were right for him. He toured with several dealerships and visited farms across the state to examine

movement. From pre-dip to postdip, everything is done inside the teat cup. It is nearly silent, which has helped with transitioning the cows, as well,� Nickels said. Nickels said he also appreciates the robots speed. Because everything is handled within the teat cup, he said he is seeing an average box time of six minutes per cow. While production dropped with the transition, he is currently seeing a 87 pounds per

day average in the herd, a number he hopes to see incline as time goes on. “We were at a 100-pound average when we moved them into the robots,� Nickels said. “Our goal is to see a 110-pound average with the robots.� While the robots are milking nearly 200 cows in the freestall, Nickels did not want to let a functional parlor go to waste, either. He is continuing to use the parlor to milk 80 cows three times per day.
“Cost was the biggest reason,â€? Nickels said. “But, also, if some cows do not adapt well to the robots, we wouldn’t have to ship them, either.â€? Nickels is surprised, however. Within the ďƒžrst six days of milking in the robots, only four cows were moved to the parlor. “I’m extremely satisďƒžed with how the cows have adapted,â€? Nickels said. “We have an 11-year-old cow in the herd who adapted to the system without a problem.â€? One week into the robots, Nickels is pleased with what he is seeing. He said he intends to keep operating the parlor until his sons are able to farm, if they so choose. “We are going to keep operating like this until we can put more robots in or if my sons decide to return to the farm,â€? The Wisconsin Holstein Association is excited to announce the second year of the Wisconsin Dairy Showcase, to be held in conjunction with the Midwest National Spring Holstein Show at the New Holland Pavilions in Madison, Wis., on April 27-29. This year’s Showcase will feature Ayrshire, Milking Shorthorn, Jersey, Red and White, and Black and White Holstein breeds. This year’s Midwest National Spring Holstein Show will be one of four breed shows that encompass the Wisconsin Dairy Showcase. New to this year’s event are the Ayrshire and Milking Shorthorn breeds, which will show Thursday afternoon starting at 4 p.m. The Midwest National Spring Jersey Show is in its second year, and will be held the same day and time as the Midwest National Red and White Show on Friday, April 28 at 10 a.m. The Midwest National Black and White Holstein Show will follow in its normal day and time slot, on April 29 starting at 8:30 a.m. This event will showcase elite animals from numerous states around the United States. The Wisconsin Holstein Association and its board of directors are excited to take advantage of these outstanding facilities and the opportunity to bring multiple breed shows to one location in Madison. Chad Ryan will judge this year’s Holstein and Jersey shows, while Paul Trapp will judge the Red and White show, and Joe Gibbs will serve as judge for the Ayrshire/MilkingShorthorn show. Wisconsin Holstein invites all breeders and spectators to attend this year’s show. Exhibitors can enter online for all three shows, or print a form from the WHA website. The initial entry deadline for all the shows is April 1, 2017. Information for ordering supplies is also available on the web, and orders must be in by April 15, 2017. The University of Kentucky is teaming up with the University of Minnesota to offer the 2017 Conference on Precision Dairy Farming in Lexington. The conference is May 30 through June 1 at UK’s Coldstream Dairy Farm and the Hyatt Regency in downtown Lexington. Land needed by May 1 for grazing demo sites in SW Wisconsin Land in Southwest Wisconsin is sought to host 3-year demonstrations of renting land for well-managed grazing. According to Robert Bauer, Grazing Broker, “Landowner participants who are selected will receive assistance to rent their land for well-managed grazing, twice annual check-ups of pasture condition for three years, and a sign to highlight involvement in the program.” The effort is part of the regional Grazing Broker project that enhances pastures and other grasslands by bringing together landowners and livestock producers in lease relationships. “Ideal land for the project is expiring or has expired from the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) or is in crops or hay and does not currently have a grazing system in place. Parcels greater than 80 acres are ideal, although smaller acreages may be selected,” said Bauer. Bovine TB detected in South Dakota Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) was identiďƒžed in three beef cows during routine slaughter inspection by USDA Food Safety Inspection Service inspectors at two Nebraska slaughter plants in February, 2017. The cows had been in feedlots in Nebraska and South Dakota since November, 2016. Market records were used to identify the herd of origin, which was tested by state and federal animal health ofďƒžcials, revealing additional infected animals. The herd remains quarantined and 41 infected animals have been removed from the herd. Final disposition of remaining animals in the herd is being determined. Thirteen adjacent herds, comprised of over 8,000 head, were quarantined for testing. One herd has been released from quarantine with negative results of testing in all cattle two years of age and older. Testing is in progress in the remaining adjacent herds and the majority of that work should be completed over the next 3 weeks. State and federal animal health ofďƒžcials continue to identify potential source herds as well as herds that

Cattle premises in 11 other states are also being investigated. Completion of the investigation can be expected to extend into the fall months of 2017. Prioritization of testing and disposition of animals in these herds is based on risk assessment and in accordance with state and federal animal health regulations. Herd owners with concern regarding potentially exposed animals are encouraged to contact their local veterinarian or the state veterinarian’s ofďƒžce. Caution is advised in commingling new additions into established herds if there is a concern that some animals may be involved in the ongoing investigation. Manage molds and mycotoxins for optimal rumen function Mycotoxins can be the source of several important herd health problems ranging from reduced feed intake to suppressed immune response. With consequences like these, it pays for producers to manage — and prevent — mycotoxins before contaminated feed hits the bunk. Yet prevention isn’t always possible and ensuring rumen function is maximized can help head off herd health problems, notes Anthony Hall, MSc MSB, PAS,

Technical Services, Ruminant. “Mycotoxins are produced by speciďƒžc molds, which are impossible to entirely avoid in the process of growing and storing crops for cattle feed,â€? Hall said. “Ruminants are actually more resistant to the effects of mycotoxins than monogastric animals like pigs and poultry. However, the toxins can disrupt rumen function in important ways.â€? Researchers have found that mycotoxins can cause lactic acid to build up, which can result in Sub Acute Ruminal Acidosis (SARA). SARA is a sustained period of time with lowered pH levels in the rumen. When SARA occurs, the animal’s ability to use the ration efďƒžciently is impaired and can lead to other, more serious, health problems like laminitis. This research may explain why acidosis and laminitis are also commonly observed when mycotoxins are a problem.1 “SARA is simply an occupational hazard for the modern dairy cow, and mycotoxins are just one of the reasons it can occur,â€? Hall said. “The costs from SARA are estimated at $1.12 per cow daily,2,3 which can quickly add up.â€? Mycotoxins can accumulate on plants in the ďƒželd, during harvest, storage or feedout of silage. To reduce exposure, the ďƒžrst step is to reduce or eliminate mold growth in silage production. Mold growth can occur in hot spots where there is air present. This is typically in poorly sealed surface layers of ensiled forages. “Proper silage management is key to reducing the presence of all kinds of molds, including those that produce mycotoxins,â€? Hall notes. “Plus, there are great beneďƒžts to good silage management beyond preventing mycotoxin production, including improved dry matter recovery and better quality feedstuffs.â€? Hall recommends producers discard any visibly mold silage and to help minimize spoilage place, he recommends using proven silage inoculants. For example, silage inoculated with Lactobacillus buchneri 40788 will be more resistant to heating and spoilage as this organism reduces yeast levels, which improves feed stability. L. buchneri 40788 applied at 400,000 CFU per gram of silage or 600,000 CFU per gram of high-moisture corn (HMC), has been uniquely reviewed by the FDA and allowed to claim improved aerobic stability. If contaminated feed manages to reach the feed bunk, it’s important animals’ rumen function is maximized. Producers can include a research-proven active dry yeast (ADY) probiotic in the ration to help achieve this goal. “ADY probiotics that include the strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077 have a high capacity to increase pH and ďƒžber digestibility in the rumen,â€? Hall notes. “Probiotic feed additives can help improve rumen function and increase ďƒžber digestion. This can help avoid reduced production due to a number of herd health challenges, including mycotoxins.â€? On July 20 during the general session, presenters will address milk quality as it relates to parlor throughput, automatic milking systems, organic dairy production, contagious mastitis and beef carcass quality. “The overall aim of the regional meeting is to help dairy producers produce and market higher quality milk,â€? said Allan Britten of Udder Health Systems, Meridian, ID, and chair of this year’s regional meeting. “Five years ago, Idaho and Washington lowered their maximum somatic cell count limit to 400,000 cells/ml for farm milk shipments. State dairy leaders had a strong and visionary milk quality improvement plan. We want to show other dairy producers and their consultants that this milk quality level is achievable and the right thing to do.â€? This year’s regional meeting program is targeted toward mastitis/milk quality specialists, dairy producers and their employees, veterinarians, researchers, extension specialists and students who have an interest in high quality milk production. NMC is a Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) provider. Thus, veterinarians attending the meeting can earn continuing education (CE) credits. Additionally, conference attendees can earn American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) CE credits. The Thoeny’s goal the past 47 years has been to produce sound functional cattle that combine production, longevity and soundness in their herd replacements. The herd has been on official DHIA testing for decades with current records indicating a herd average of 2X 23,900 pounds of milk, excellent 4.2% 1000 pounds of fat and 3.2% 764 fat. Tank average 74 pounds with 23 over 100 pounds on last test. No BST. SCC well under 100,000 with the Thoeny herd placing in the top 100 herds in Minnesota for lowest SCC counts for 4 consecutive years. Numerous quality milk awards. Buyers will appreciate the excellent udders, feet, legs and overall mobility of this set of cows. Cows are milked in a double 8 parallel parlor and housed in a compost pack, loose housing facility.
