Remembering 13 years of Dempsey
Nighs reect on breeding a top sire By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
WEST PRAIRIE, Wis. – Breeding a bull that impacts a breed is a dream of many registered dairy cattle breeders. Breeding one that can impact their breed for well over a decade is surreal. The Nigh family of Lirr Farms, located in the Vernon County burgh of West Prairie, Wis., has lived that dream through their Holstein bull, Lirr Drew Dempsey. Dempsey, an active member of the Select Sires Showcase Selections line up for nearly a decade, passed away at 13 years of age earlier this month. More than 38,700 Dempsey daughters are found throughout the world, and 27,000 have been ofcially type classied. At the time of his death, Dempsey’s lifetime semen sales have totaled more than 570,000 doses. Lirr Farms is home to 130 registered Holsteins that are milked in a robotic facility built following a barn re in 2016. The farm is operated by brothers Randy and Robert along with Robert’s son, Ryan, and his wife, Kelsey. Two more

of Robert’s children, Brady and Rachel, help when they are home from attending college in River Falls, Wis. They crop about 900 acres, raising corn, alfalfa and soybean. Dempsey was born on the Nigh’s farm in December 2005 as the second natural born calf of Kerndt Sneezy Derry Drew, a 4-H project heifer purchased from Bradley Kerndt for Ryan in the Minnesota Spring Special Sale. Drew was scored Very Good 88 and has ve generations of Excellent dams behind her several of which have obtained dam of merit and gold medal dam designations from Holstein USA. Originally Dempsey was only sampled in Canada, and the breeder semen the Nighs received was the only semen in the United States. “We didn’t use a lot of it, and what we did use we didn’t get any females,” Randy said. “Then his daughters started calving in really well up in Canada, and we started to use more of our breeder semen again. We continued to use him, and we still haven’t stopped.” Today, there are 14 milking Dempsey daughters in the Lirr herd and several heifers on the farm. “They are really so uniform and balanced as a group,” Randy said. “That is probably the most obvious thing about them. … They are moderate stature to tall cows. What is really impressive about them is the width and depth of fore-rib. They all have pleasing udders.” Dempsey has consistently been toward the top of proof lists for both LPI and for conformation based on the performance of his daughters. Those numbers continue to rank him high on the lists in both the United States and Canada. “He came out screaming hot on his rst release proof, and was No. 1 for both LPI and for conformation,” Randy said. “He really has earned his stripes.” Dempsey has had several well-

known daughters that have done well in the showring. “It is thrilling to see those daughters do so well on the colored shavings and know that you played a small part in their breeding,” Randy said. “2016 was really a banner year for Dempsey at World Dairy Expo. There were four cows pulled out for champion at the end of the day, and two of them were Dempsey daughters. For the limited number of cows at that show, that’s a pretty good winning percentage.” Those two daughters were Wendon Dempsey Prude EX-95, who was named the reserve grand champion that day. The other was TK-Plain-View Ripley EX-96, who placed second to Prude in the 4-yearold class. Randy claims Ripley as his overall favorite daughter of Dempsey. Another Dempsey daughter is a household name, Co-Vale Dempsy Dina 4270-ET EX-96, the 2017 Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion. Several Dempsey daughters have found success in Europe including Sunibelle Dempsey Esprit EX94 who was selected as the reserve grand champion at the European Championship Show and was named the grand and supreme champion at the Swiss Expo earlier this year. Breeding a high-prole type bull lends a certain amount of notoriety and name recognition to a farm, but the Nighs said Dempsey’s dam did not ush well, so they were unable to develop the family as they would have liked to. However, the ranking favorite cow in the herd is an EX94 Windbrook out of Dempsey’s Shottle sister. “We get a lot of the credit for Dempsey, but it has really been a group effort,” Randy said, showing appreciation for the dairymen that have included Dempsey in their breeding programs. Randy also credited the Select Sires marketing program for using the bull’s full registered name in their advertising, giving credit to the Nighs as the breeder and recognition for the Lirr prex. Both Randy and Ryan visited the Select Sires headquarters to see the mature bull that had left their farm as an 8-month-old calf. They are quick to credit the care the bull received at Select Sires for allowing him to have such a long and productive life and career. “When he passed away, Dempsey was the oldest bull at Select Sires by a couple of years,” Randy said. “He lived a charmed life there.”

WINFRED, S.D. – Shannon Colony, a Hutterite community, put the nishing touches on a set of new dairy facilities two years ago. The facilities include a dairy barn that features four robotic milkers and a calf nursery equipped with automatic calf feeders. Shannon Colony hosted Alexander van der Lely, CEO of Lely Group, Peter Langebeeke, president of the North American division, and Chad Huyser, vice president of the North American division April 17 at the dairy farm near Winfred, S.D. Adam Wipf, dairy manager at Shannon Colony, led the visitors on a tour of the colony’s dairy facilities. “After two years of use, I can say that there aren’t many things we would change about our dairy barn,” Wipf said. “It has been working very well for us.” The walls of Shannon

tomated sprinkler system. The freestalls are wide and are bedded with recycled manure solids. Half a dozen robots patrol the alleyways, constantly scraping manure into a set of grates. “The milking robots have been very reliable and are easy to maintain,” Wipf said.

“Breakdowns have been few. We were always able to get them xed in a timely manner.” Members of the colony built the new facilities over a 2.5-year period. “We did the majority of the work ourselves, including installing the robots down to
the technical details,” Wipf said. But before a single shovelful of dirt was turned, Wipf and colony members toured robotic milking facilities. “We looked at a lot of robot barns before we settled on the design for our facility,” Wipf said. “We put a lot of thought into cow ow. We also wanted to avoid making any mistakes. We are very pleased by how comfortable it is in the dairy barn. On the coldest winter day, it never drops below 38 degrees inside. And in the heat of the summertime, it’s 10 to 15 degrees cooler in the barn than it is outdoors.” In addition to freestalls for the milking herd, Shannon Colony’s dairy barn also has an area for dry cows and growing heifers. The 212 cows being milked are averaging 95 pounds of milk per head per day. The cows are being milked an average of 3.3 to 3.4 times a day with 2.6 refusals. Each robot harvests about 5,000 pounds of milk per day. “Our best cow just gave us 171 pounds of milk in one day,” Wipf said. “We are starting to calve out some of our Turn to SHANNON COLONY | Page 5

own heifers and are excited to see how they will do.” Even though they have used their facility for two years, the folks at Shannon Colony are continuing to learn new things. “We bed our freestalls once a week and have learned that we get the best results when we use fresh manure solids,” Wipf said. “We shut the fans off when we’re bedding and it’s very cold outside because we don’t want to fog the barn over. The Discovery robots weren’t working as well as we hoped they would, so we modied them with some different tires. In the meantime, we learned a lot about programming them, but now they are doing a great job. That was one of our biggest challenges, but after modifying their design to convert them from cleaning slats to cleaning alleys and learning how to program them, they are also a success.” This learning curve extended to the calf nursery. For example, the calf nursery originally had a solid concrete oor in the area where the milk replacer feeding station and the trough for starter feed are located. This area always remained wet which exacerbated y problems in the summertime. The concrete oor was torn out and a shallow concrete trench was put in its place. A slotted concrete oor was then installed over the trench, and the area now stays dry and clean. An overow pipe placed in the wall of the trench allows waste to gravity ow into an outside pit. “The folks at Shannon Colony are always willing to learn and to im-
prove,” Langebeeke said. “We like to hear from farmers and learn what we can do to improve our products.” van der Lely agreed. “I am deeply impressed by these facilities,” van der Lely said. “They have been built to last.” Following the tour, van der Lely gave a short talk about the history of his company and what he sees over the horizon. “We believe that all dairy farms will eventually be robotized due to labor issues,” van der Lely said. “Consumers are watching to see how their food is being produced. They want to know that their food is being produced in a way that is sustainable and is friendly to the environment. The farm of the future will be driven by consumer interests. We feel that dairy farm succession is made possible with robotization. Our goal is to make life easier for dairy farmers and to increase their quality of life.” van der Lely said robotic data collection and management has opened the door to farm-bottled milk that can be customized to t consumers’ tastes. “Our Orbiter concept will enable a dairy to bottle milk that is traceable to specic cow families,” he said. “For example, the Orbiter can segregate milk from cows that have a higher protein content in their milk or from cows that carry the A2 beta casein trait. This system is scalable. It will work just as well on a small dairy as it would on a large dairy. Our Orbiter pilot project has shown that consumers have a high amount of interest in the bottled milk that is produced this way.”

Weis’ 15-year-old cow still going
Grandma of the herd

PINE ISLAND, Minn. – For part of his youth and his entire career as a young dairyman, 27-year-old Bryant Weis has been able to count on seeing one cow in the barn every morning. At 15 years old, Ma-Pine Sid Britt is the oldest cow in the Weis herd and the oldest cow to live on the dairy where Weis and his dad, Carl, milk 230 cows near Pine Island, Minn. “She’s nothing pretty. She’s a short little cow. We call her Grandma,” Weis said. The purebred registered Holstein has had a hard life, Weis said. “But, she’s a ghter, and she never gives up,” Weis said. Britt was born to a show cow that claimed the grand champion trophy at the Dodge County Fair open class show. Although Britt’s dam could win awards for type, she had a hard time getting bred back. When A.I. attempts did not work, Carl used a cleanup bull as a last ditch effort to get the cow pregnant. “That’s how we got Britt,” Weis said. “I still remember feeding her as a calf when I was young.”

Britt almost had her career as a dairy cow cut short at the age of 6 due to an abscess in her back hoof. “It made her whole leg swell up. It was pretty bad,” Weis said. After opening and draining the abscess, Weis and his sister spent the next six weeks picking up Britt’s foot and putting it in a bucket to soak in hot soapy water during every evening milking. “We probably should have sold her then,” said Weis, who was 18 at the time. She recovered, but walking is not as carefree as it had been before the infection. Although Britt has been an easy

breeder and has had a calf every year since she was 2, not every labor has been simple. “Every heifer calf she has had has been backwards,” Weis said. This included her most recent heifer born Jan. 29. Other than this daughter and one that will be 4 years old in June, Britt has outlived all her offspring. Three months into her lactation, Britt is milking 80 pounds of milk per day. “At 15 years old, I’ll take that,” Weis said. Her age also gets her VIP treatment on the farm. “She’s spoiled a bit,” Weis said.

Although the Weis’ freestall barn has a bedded pack, Britt prefers the sand bedded freestalls over the cornstalk bedded pack, so Weis obliges. “She gets to be with the 2-year-olds rather than the older cows,” Weis said. “She can probably teach them a thing or two.” Weis said since being on sand, Britt’s foot has been healthy, and she has only needed maintenance hoof trims. “Since she’s been in this barn, she has never had a wrap on her foot or anything,” Weis said. A freestall barn has not always been Britt’s home. The Weises had a tiestall barn until 2015 when they moved their herd into their newly built freestall barn. “It’s amazing what the sand bedding has done for all the cows,” Weis said. “And, they adapted so fast.” Milking has stayed fairly consistent for Britt. The Weises turned the front part of their tiestall barn into a double-8 atbarn parlor, which meant Britt’s old stall – the sixth stall on the south side – stayed intact. Every milking, Britt will turn into her old stall to be milked. If it is occupied, she will wait until it is free. Britt is not the only older cow in the herd. Weis estimates about 20% of his herd is 8 years old and older, including a pair of 12-year-olds. “It’s how they’re handled,” Weis said about the key to longevity. “We’re not pushing our cows to go milk them. And, every cow has their own way of doing things. We understand that.” Weis said he is going to try to breed Britt back, but he also knows she might be slowing down. “I’m not as attached to her like I am other cows, but when it comes time for her to go, it will be hard,” Weis said. “We’ve had a long time together.”

KIDS CORNER: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
A clear vision for their future in dairy Otte brothers all back on home dairy in different capacities By Krista Kuzma

In February 2009, Dairy Star talked to the Otte brothers – Tyler, Bret and Eric – for the Kids Corner feature. At the time, Tyler, Bret and Eric were 16, 14 and 11, respectively. We spoke with the three for this issue about what they are up to 10 years later. RANDOLPH, Minn. – Even at the ages of 16, 14 and 11, the three Otte brothers had a clear vision of where they wanted to be in the future. They all wanted to go to college and return to work on their family’s dairy. Now 10 years later, Tyler, Bret and Eric Otte are on the path to living out the vision they had when they were little. They each take on a different role at Square Deal Dairy, a 450-cow dairy owned by their parents, Blake and Chicky Otte, near Randolph, Minn. “It’s challenging, but it’s fun,” Tyler said about working with family. Tyler is the rst brother to return to the farm full time after attending the University of Minnesota and working for another dairy for two years. He has been home on the dairy since the summer of 2016. Although feeding TMR in the heated skidloader used to be Tyler’s favorite chore in his younger years, it is no longer No. 1 on his list. “I’m not a fan of driving equipment,” Tyler said. He prefers his role working every day with the cows, especially with fresh cows and the genetics. “I think the more and more I understood everything, the more I like it,” Tyler said about his shift in interests on the dairy from when he was younger. Now Tyler is much more intrigued by the lifespan of a cow. “Watching the transition of a cow having a calf so you can see your genetic selection, then seeing the cow going from not giving any milk to 120 pounds

Bret is back on the dairy on a part time basis. Since his graduation from the University of Minnesota in May 2016, Bret has been working in the nutrition eld. His favorite chore from 10 years ago – feeding heifers grain – still rings true today as he does all the nutrition work for the youngstock on the dairy. His interest in nutrition started young and continued through high school and college where he was able to expand his knowledge through internships during the summer. “I like the feeding aspect, but I also like doing harvest, too. That’s where nutrition starts – with good forage. It can affect the health of the cow, the breeding of the cow, the production of the cow, everything,” Bret said. In the feature from 10 years ago, Bret mentioned his favorite cow was his 2-year-old Holstein, Blackberry.

Bret hopes to step into an even larger role on the dairy but would like to be able to do off-farm nutrition work. Eric graduated from Ridgewater College one year ago. As he mentioned 10 years ago, Eric said he wanted to return to the farm to do all the crop work for the dairy. He also said he would have lots of acres if he had his own dairy. “I’ve always liked the crop side,” Eric said. The cab of a tractor has always been a comfortable place for Eric. He fondly remembers falling asleep while riding with his grandpa or dad in his younger years. Although Eric works off the farm for another crop farmer, he has returned to the dairy in a part time capacity. He helps make big decisions about crop and eldwork. Making hay is his favorite. “I like all the cuts you get to take off the eld and everything you have to do to make sure you don’t wreck the eld during each crop,” Eric said. With small amounts of winter kill appearing and the threat of nding more, Eric said the family is getting ready for potentially needing to seed down triticale, barley or oats for the summer in order to get feed tonnage for the cows to replace forage. “When we got cold rain, there was no cover on any of it (the hay) and the
rain was suffocating it,” Eric said. Eric would like to come back to the dairy full time and buy his own manure hauling equipment. Although Eric prefers to be out in the eld, he does have a soft spot when it comes to giving certain animals extra attention. “There’s always one when you’re feeding grain that looks like she needs extra so I always put a little pile in front of her and rub her head,” Eric said. Bret and Tyler said that makes it easy to pick those cows out in the herd. “They’re always stopping and wanting you to pet them,” Tyler said. That was the case with the cow Eric mentioned in the feature 10 years ago. A 2-year-old Holstein, Gorgeous Girl, was his favorite animal. “She lets me hug her anytime,” Eric said in the 2009 feature. Even though Bret and Eric work off the farm, they are included in all major decision making. When it comes to fostering a love for farming, the brothers give credit to their parents for allowing them to be involved on the dairy and helping in their interest areas. “They took into consideration what we liked,” Tyler said. “It made it more appealing for us to come back, and it made farming enjoyable.” Without their encouragement and guidance, the Ottes might not be where they are today – on a clear path to fullling their vision of dairy farming together.

Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know. I enjoy cooking and baking. I especially like to make and eat chocolate desserts. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I help in the calf barn. I operate automatic feeders, feed calves in our starter barn, feed grain, dehorn and vaccinate. I also oversee the farm’s show pigs, sows and show heifers. Occasionally, I help cover the bunker and do yard work.
What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I’m a chapter FFA ofcer and the president of our 4-H club. I am also a member of the Junior Wisconsin Holstein Association, the National Junior Swine Association and the American Berkshire Association. I also show dairy cattle at local shows and the Junior Wisconsin State Fair. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? I’m involved in these organizations because I’m passionate about agriculture, and these groups connect myself to other youth with similar interests. My favorite organization is FFA because I am able to meet members from across the nation. We are all connected to agriculture. FFA has also helped me to improve my public speaking abilities. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Though I have had many good experiences, my best experience was attending the Wisconsin FFA State Convention. I was able to volunteer for the day of service, compete in a speaking contest, attend sessions and have fun with friends throughout the days of convention. What is your favorite social media? Facebook. I enjoy seeing exceptional cows, farm posts and organization announcements in my social media feed. What are your career aspirations? I am hoping to attend a four year university majoring in dairy science or an ag-related major. Then, I plan on working in the agriculture industry, likely coming back to the family farm. What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I have

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would change how most consumers view large dairy farms. We may milk over 2,000 cows, but all of our animals are well taken care of. Whether it is the cows’ rotary parlor they get to ride, the sprinklers for warm days, their comfortable sand-bedded stalls or their free choice feed, dairy cows are treated well on dairy farms. To change the negative perception, I share our story and tell people what is actually happening on the dairy farm. My family and I also welcome everyone to our dairy farm, Alfalawn Farm, for the Dunn County Dairy Breakfast in June to see the farm for themselves.

Sometimes, we get discouraged when we don’t get the position we were hoping for, or things fall through and we can’t buy the show heifer. However, through patience and hard work, a more rewarding outcome often comes our way. Who do you look up to? I look up to my parents. They have both taught me so much and are supportive of all my activities. I know I can always come to them with questions and problems. Furthermore, my mom and dad work hard every day on the family dairy farm, and I hope to have a work ethic like them someday as well.
