Petersons inducted into MLBA Hall of Fame Couple’s photography, auction business are staples in the industry By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com

WYKOFF, Minn. – Normen and Doris Peterson have dedicated their livelihood to the betterment of the dairy industry, and their efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Petersons were named 2020 inductees to the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association Hall of Fame March 12 during the organization’s annual banquet. “It’s unbelievable, frankly,” Doris said. “To be a part of that list of names … to be joining such an elite group, that they wanted to include us is a big honor.” The Petersons operate Pete’s Auction and Photo Inc. based in Fillmore County’s Wykoff. Since the company’s inception in 1964, Normen has photographed 45,000 dairy cattle in 25 states across the nation and in four foreign countries. He has also photographed more than 1,000 weddings. Additionally, Normen has managed and auctioneered sales in eight states, including being the auctioneer at ve national breed sales. Lately, this entity of the business has transformed to more private treaty sales with Normen working as a livestock broker. Normen grew up in the Wykoff community, being a charter member of the local 4-H club. It was in those early years he developed an interest in the dairy industry – having a herd of registered Ayrshires and taking his knowledge of the show ring to form his rst business of tting cattle for

sales and shows. “I’ve really devoted my lifetime to the dairy industry,” he said. “It’s really hard to put into words. It’s just been a natural part of who I am.” The Petersons’ current business began in 1964 when Normen realized the need

for professional photographers in the dairy industry. In 1959, Normen’s registered Ayrshire, Burton Dairymaid, a cow imported from Scotland, was the national grand champion at the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo, Iowa. In 1960, she

was reserve grand champion cow at the International Dairy Show in Chicago. Yet, because of the few photographers in the business, Normen did not get a photo of Dairymaid at that time. “I saw there was a need,” Normen said. “I learned everything from the school of hard knocks. It started as a small business and grew from there.” Normen and Doris have worked in unison to form a reputable business in the industry. As Normen has striven for the perfect photo, – capturing the cows’ best features – Doris has taken on the behindthe-scenes work. She has developed the lm, does the bookwork and serves as the company’s ofce manager. “Norm was on the road 90% of the time,” Doris said. “We made a lot of decisions over the phone.” In addition to the couple’s booming auction and photography business, they also had a milking herd comprised of registered Ayrshire and Holstein cattle. Normen and Doris have been married for 59 years. They have three children – Brad (Sherry); Jodie (Bill) Jacobson; and Jana (Joe Lieffring) Peterson Groski. The couple also has four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Brad joined the family farm in 1993 and has since transformed the enterprise into custom heifer raising. Together, the three family members are owners of Toppy-Hill Holsteins and White Crest Ayrshires. With these animals, the Petersons have exhibited class winners at county, district and national dairy cattle shows. “Our children showed interest in dairy cattle over the years,” Normen said. “My favorite memory was last year when we had four generations showing at the

Fillmore County Fair: myself, Brad, our grandkids and great-grandkids.” The Petersons’ time in the industry has graced them with several accolades, including the Fillmore County American Dairy Association Outstanding Service Award (2001), the Minnesota Holstein Association Long-Time Meritorious Service Award (2001), recognition for Pete’s long-term support of Fillmore County 4-H (2008), and the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Minnesota Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (2018). Normen also served nine years on the Minnesota Holstein board of directors, was a member of the executive committee of the 1989 National Holstein Convention held in Minnesota and chairman of the national sale that year. The couple also assisted with the National Holstein Convention sale when it took place on the stage of the

Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. More so, the couple has each served six years on the Fillmore County Extension Committee, and Normen has auctioneered the county’s 4-H livestock auction for more than 25 years. Both are lifetime members of the Wykoff Methodist Church and have served on several committees. To add the MLBA Hall of Fame to that list is an honor for the Petersons. While the recognition is greatly appreciated, the Petersons said the people who have been a part of their careers mean more than any plaque or honor. “We’ve worked with really good people,” Normen said. “We’ve made a lot of friends along the way with a lot of good memories. Newman outlines summer forage options for dairy farmers By Stacey Smart

MADISON, Wis. – Record-setting bad weather, feed shortages and other challenges have led dairy producers to pursue new forage options in recent years. As a result, more farmers are growing and feeding non-traditional crops, such as sorghums, cereal grains, ryegrass, crabgrass, teff grass and more. These alternative forages can be a great way to fulll inventories when feed requirements Yoana Newman fall short. UW-Extension In a webinar hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension Crops and Dairy Program Areas April 3, speakers shared information about alternative forages that can be grown and fed on dairy farms. When looking to plant annual or summer forages, or what some might call an emergency forage, Yoana Newman, UW-Extension forage specialist, recommends nding a species with quick germination, high yield and high nutritive value. “Farmers must make the most of the Upper Midwest summer’s short window of production,” Newman said. “Good options are warm-season annual grasses like sorghums, including forage sorghum, sudangrass and sorghum-sudan hybrid. Other options include teff and forage crabgrass which are grasses of lesser quality and more brous material. Warm-season legumes like cowpeas and vetches, and cool-season legumes such as berseem, crimson and red clover, can be combined with sorghum forages.” Cool-season annual grasses like ryegrass and small grains such as triticale, rye and oat are all good examples of alternative forages for dairy farms. Brassicas like forage radish and turnips can be good for transition forages. Annual and biennial Italian ryegrass can be planted from April into summer and may be used as a companion crop to alfalfa. Well-adapted to cool summers, Newman said ryegrass contains high amounts of digestible ber, possibly the highest of the various grasses. Ryegrass is also known for its high production potential and excellent palatability. “The advantage of Italian ryegrass is that it will remain vegetative much longer than an annual which is what we want in these forages,” Newman said. When it comes to ryegrass, use forage types only – do not use turf types. Newman recommends choosing latematuring, stem and crown rust-resistant grasses. “We’re looking for tonnage,” Newman said. “And there are many varieties on the market.” Ryegrass is adapted to sandy loam and clay loam soils with a pH of 5.5-7.5. “This grass requires moist conditions,” Newman said. “Do not plant in real sandy soils unless you have irriga-

tion.” Despite being a cool-season grass, ryegrass has a low tolerance for cold weather and does not take kindly to frost. Therefore, plant after risk of frost has passed. Known for good seedling vigor, ryegrass shows quick emergence within ve to 14 days. Plant late March until May at a seeding rate of 20 to 30 pounds per acre if seeded alone and 5 to 10 pounds per acre if mixed with other perennials or if planting as a companion crop. Nitrogen fertilization is a must at 50 pounds per acre at planting and also after each cut. Ryegrass cut at boot to mid-bloom at a height of about 12 inches will yield 4,000-8,000 pounds per acre. First and second cuts will likely produce 2,5003,000 pounds per acre, while third and fourth cuts will garner 1,500-2,000 pounds per acre. “The yield is very dependent on the variety you use,” Newman said. “About half of the varieties might even make it to a fth cutting.” For farms with sandy soils, teff grass and crabgrass are great options if looking for hay or grazing heifers with lower nutritional requirements than lactating cows. “Teff grass provides excellent erosion control,” Newman said. “It has fast germination of three to ve days and a brous root, which is what we’re looking for in a true summer annual planting.” An excellent forage in terms of quality, teff grass has ne stems and superb palatability. Its quality is similar to that of timothy and has no prussic acid concerns and excellent amino acid composition – its lysine content is higher than wheat or barley. Teff grass is high in ber, phosphorous, calcium, zinc, iron, copper and thiamin. Teff grass is recommended for soil types of sands to clay with a pH of 4.57. A true tropical, teff grass lacks cold tolerance and does best in temperatures of 50 degrees to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Planting should occur in late spring after frost at a seeding rate of 7 to 10 pounds per acre if using coated seed. Use of teff grass can begin 45-55 days after planting, yielding 3,0005,000 pounds per acre. When cutting, leave about 5 inches of stubble as taller stubble ensures quicker regrowth. Large crabgrass (not wheat) is another warm-season summer annual chosen by dairy operations for its ber content. It is sod-forming with runners, and the Quick N Go variety is great for the Midwest because of its quick germination. This fast-germinating grass is not a fan of the cold and should be planted around June 1. Sandy loam to clay soil is best with a pH of 5.5-7. Production of this highly palatable grass varies from 4,000-12,000 pounds per acre. Grazing height is 6 inches to 18 inches, while haying height is 18 inches to 24 inches with a 4- to 5-inch stubble. “When considering alternative forages, look at ber, starch, ash and ber digestibility, keeping in mind that grasses can bring in exceptional ber digestibility,” said Dr. John Goeser, nutrition director at Rock River Laboratory and adjunct assistant professor at UW-Madison dairy science department. “When analyzing alternative forages and considering different varieties, it’s important to remember that ber digestibility is paramount for lactating dairy cattle.”

I am the president of the Lewiston-Altura FFA chapter, secretary of the Silo Happy Hustlers 4-H club, member of the Junior Holstein Association and am a senior dairy ambassador for the Winona County American Dairy Association.

What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I have learned about working with groups of people, and that hard work and perseverance pays off. I am thankful to have parents who make my sister, Megan, and I do our own work with our projects because it has made us learn how to work together to accomplish our goals and has been very rewarding.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I wanted to be a part of these organizations because I wanted to learn leadership skills I could use throughout my life. I also wanted to show dairy animals at the fair. My favorite organization to be a part of is 4-H because I have the opportunity to show at the county and state level. I really enjoy helping younger members with their projects. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My best experiences have been at the state fair because I get to hang out with people from all over the state who love showing cows. I make a lot of new friends and memories. I also had a blast attending the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was fun meeting other FFA members across the country and learning about careers in agriculture. What is your favorite social media? I like Instagram because I can keep up with my friends and favorite celebrities. I feel it is the best social media platform to reach younger consumers and educate them about where food comes from. What are your career aspirations? I will attend the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to major in ag-

Who do you look up to? I look up to my parents because they are hard workers, have instilled good values in me and always support me. I admire my dad because of his love for the dairy industry and how good he is at managing every aspect of the dairy, even through the tough times. MADISON, Wis. – Cereal grains, like rye and triticale, are seeing increased usage, often in a fall planted/spring harvest situation after corn silage or soybean. They may also be planted in spring for an early summer harvest. “Last year, we saw few fallplanted winter cereals due to late crop harvest and soil conditions,” said Matt Akins, University of Wisconsin-Extension dairy specialist. “I think a lot of farmers this year are going to have to go with the spring-planted cereal grains. This is denitely doable as oats or spring barley are two good Matt Akins options that show quick yields in UW-Extension the spring, especially if you’re needing forage fairly quickly.” Akins was one of several speakers during a webinar hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension Crops and Dairy Program Areas April 3. Speakers shared information about alternative forages that can be grown and fed on dairy farms. Cereal grains will yield up to 2 tons of dry matter per acre if grown for high-quality, lactating-cow feed and should be harvested at boot stage. “For lactating animals, you should target a (total digestible nutrients) of 65%,” Akins said. “For heifer feed, a later harvest at the heading or owering stage is ideal for more tonnage.” Triticale generally matures slower than rye and is slightly more forgiving with spring weather. Winter cereal forage can be variable depending on weather and growing conditions. In a Marsheld study comparing winter triticale yields in 2016 and 2017, production at the boot stage in 2016 was between 1 ton and 2 tons of dry matter and only half that amount in 2017 when soil conditions were wet. If harvest is delayed to late spring/early summer, tonnage can quickly increase. A farm could expect to get up to 4 tons per acre in a good year. As the crop becomes more mature, ber levels increase while energy or total digestible nutrients levels decrease. Planting oats in the summer (late July to early August) and harvesting in fall is a good option for farms needing tonnage at the end of the season, yielding 1 ton to 3 tons of dry matter per acre with high sugar and digestible ber content. Akins cited two farms in Dane and Brown counties where ryelage accounted for 15%-20% of forage in the lactating diet. At both farms, milk production maintained a fairly high level at about 95 pounds per cow. Another speaker during the webinar, Yoana Newman, UW-Extension forage specialist, warned that seed inventories are running out quickly for oats and rye and advises planting decisions for these forages be made soon. Craving warm weather and dry conditions, sorghum forages are an ideal summer crop. These droughtresistant forages do not like wet soils, and soil temperature is critical at planting. An ideal temp is 65 degrees with the minimum being 60 degrees. Depending on soil, temperature and moisture, plant sorghum forages in early to mid-June. Forage sorghum should be seeded at 60,000 to 80,000 seeds/acre (or 4 to 6 pounds per acre) in wide rows of 15 inches to 30 inches. A planter is ideal for this low seeding rate, Akins said, but a grain drill can also work if it is well-calibrated. Sorghum sudan or sudangrass has a heavier seeding rate of 15 to 20 pounds per acre and should be planted with a grain drill in 6- to 18-inch rows. For multi-harvest systems, put in narrow rows of 6 to 7 inches. For a single harvest system, look at wider spacing to allow more airow through the eld to enable drying later in the season. The rst cut should occur at 40-45 days in late July or early August when forage is between 30 and 40 inches tall to get high-quality forage for lactating cows. Leave about 6 inches of stem to improve regrowth, and use a wide swath and crimp stems for quick drying. “It is a very wet crop that takes several days to dry that can be used as silage or baleage but not for dry hay in the Midwest,” Akins said. A single-harvest system can maximize yield of moderate quality forage producing nearly twice the yield of a multi-harvest system. “In central Wisconsin, we are seeing 6 to 8 tons of dry matter and possibly higher on a really good year depending on soil moisture, with sorghums doing very well in sandy soils,” Akins said. If using a multi-harvest system, Akins recommends using sorghum-sudangrass or sudangrass because it has better regrowth potential than forage sorghums. For lactating cows, he said to go with BMR for its higher ber digestibility. Sugar content can also be very high in these crops – between 5% and 15%. In addition, potassium levels in sorghum forages can run high, especially in a multi-harvest system. “You denitely want to do a wet chemistry test for minerals on these forages to check for potassium,” Akins said. “If potassium is high, you’re not going to want to feed these to dry cows or at least not close-up dry cows.”
