Olson stands up to cancer with help from community Lewiston dairy farmer honored at Fools Five Road Race By Krista Kuzma

Olson-Lane, near Lewiston, Minn. “When they asked me, I said there are a lot more deserving people who have gone through more than I have.” The Fools Five Road Race is a fundraising event. Runners have the option between a 1-mile and 5-mile race. There are also over 300 items to bid on at the silent and live auctions. Money raised is donated to fund cancer research and the local cancer support group in town. This is the 41st annual race. This year, 2,070 people participated in the race. “Everyone is affected. Someone you know – a friend or a family member has had cancer,” Olson said. Olson was hit with her

LEWISTON, Minn. – During past Fools Five Road Races, Beth Olson could be found amongst the swarm of runners with her running shoes and race number. If not racing, she would buy a few items on the auctions at the very least. This year, the dairy farmer participated in the annual event in an unexpected way. As a breast cancer survivor, Olson was one of three people chosen as a designated honoree to lead the race by riding in the police car that escorts the runners on their way through Lewiston, Minn., April 7. “It’s very humbling, and it’s really an honor they would think of me. It’s emotional,” said Olson, who milks 70 cows with her family on their dairy,

ConƟnued from OLSON | Page 3 own cancer diagnosis on June 6, 2018. “I went in for my yearly mammogram and it showed up,” she said. After a double mastectomy July 18, 2018, Olson then had to wait until September to nd out her treatment route – whether she needed chemotherapy, radiation or both. “The rst thing you have to do is survive the diagnosis – the realization of it,” Olson said. “The waiting was probably the hardest.” Once Olson knew her treatment route, she rolled up her sleeves to get to work at beating cancer. “It’s like a farmer mentality. I can’t change it so what are we going to do to x it,” Olson said. “You can’t just sit and feel sorry for yourself. You have to move on and put it in God’s hands. Your faith is what really gets you through, too.” At home, Olson’s husband, Jim, and daughter, Katie, stepped up to do Olson’s chores on the farm and in the house. Her son and daughter-in-law, Trent and Kristin, who live in Windsor, Wis., also pitched in when visiting. Friends and community members sent charms, bracelets, owers and other small trinkets to let Olson know they were thinking of her during her treatment. She also received cards, phone calls, text messages and visits from people showing support. Women from her church and a fellow dairy farming friend, Karen Becker, made her quilts. “Karen made a quilt for me in one month. She said, ‘I can’t be there for your treatments so take this with you. I hope you feel the love wrapped around you and hopefully the bright colors will brighten your day.’ I had it in the car with me every time I went,” Olson said. “It was unbelievable the amount of support.” Five days a week for ve weeks, Olson endured radiation treatment. At the end, Olson rang the oncology department’s celebratory bell signaling her nal treatment and cancer-free status. “It was overwhelming. I have my future ahead of me now,” she said. Olson is thankful for that future every day. “When I’m out feeding calves in the morning by the hutches and as the sun comes up, I always stop

She is also appreciative for the people in her life. “Friends and family really mean a lot to me. Don’t worry about the small stuff because there are so many other things in life to worry about,” Olson said. Friends, family, community members and racegoers showed Olson support once again on race day.

“Every year before the race starts everyone takes a knee to honor those standing who are battling cancer or who have beat cancer,” Olson said. “This year, I was one of those standing.” Even though Olson never imagined standing with other cancer survivors at the Fools Five Road Race, she is glad to be through her treatment and appreciative of the people who helped her along the way.

Ventilation for Calves
STUART, Neb. – In an instant, farmers across the Great Plains lost everything – their livelihoods, their homes, and in some instances, their own lives. The historic March oods caused immediate devastation across the farming community, but its longterm impact remains unknown. “Really, the dairy industry dodged a bullet because we didn’t have to dump [much] milk,” Kris Bousquet said. “But, this isn’t going to be xed overnight and farmers are going to feel it for a long time.” Bousquet is the executive director of the Nebraska State Dairy Association. He has spent the last several weeks addressing the farming crisis. An extended winter season facilitated Nebraska’s catastrophic weather event, which began mid March. The storm, coined a bomb cyclone, tore through the state March 12-14 and rst brought record amounts of snow. Later, rainfall melted the frozen precipitation; but with frost still in the ground, there was nowhere for the water to retreat. “We were hammered with 8-10 inches of pretty thick, heavy snow,” Bousquet said. “Then, came the rain and it melted the snow overnight.” The speed of this storm, the accumulated moisture and frost-laden ground all contributed to the devastation that ensued. Within days, a majority of the rural state was underwater in what has been deemed the worst ooding in decades. Of Nebraska’s 93 counties, 65 are in declared states of emergency,
according to the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, with nine qualifying for Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster aid. The greatest damage was seen in northeast Nebraska, where the Elkhorn, Missouri and Platte rivers run. A majority of Nebraska’s 60,000 dairy cows and 141 farms are located in this area along the Iowa border near Interstate 29. Dairy farmers who subscribe to Dairy Star reported little loss from the ooding. However, the industry was not entirely spared. “This is as bad of stretch as I’ve ever seen,” Gary Olberding said. “There’s never been anything like this before.” Olberding has hauled milk for 42 years, and is the owner of Olberding Trucking and Dairy Supply in Holt County near Stuart, Neb. In a typical day he hauls 14 loads from 39 patrons. The oodwaters made it nearly impossible for Olberding and his crew to travel their regular routes. “When it was bad, it was really bad, especially on the north side of the [Platte] river,” Olberding said. “Every road was under water.” Of Olberding’s 39 patrons, three did not have the capacity for ve milkings and were forced to dump milk while they waited for the milk truck to arrive. “Some small dairies were already hurting and this will add to that,” Bousquet said. Nebraska Governor Pete Rickett waived hauling weight and length restrictions March 15, permitting trucks to travel throughout the state. This allowed milk haulers to reach the dairies using alternative routes. ConƟnued from FLOOD | Page 6 While Olberding traveled a few hundred miles to pick up the milk, he knew of another hauler who traveled 900 miles for one pick up of 40,000 pounds of milk. At the peak of the storm, 2,000 miles of road were closed; at the time of this writing, roadways were improved, but there were still 200-some miles inaccessible. Nearly $1 million of the $400 million of damage assessed for FEMA aid was transportation costs, said Bousquet. “Culverts gave out, roads collapsed and bridges are gone … gone for years,” Olberding said. “The worst of it passed, but it’s not going to go back to normal.” As repairs are being made when feasible, milk is still being picked up. “Haulers are still out there, going out of their way to get milk,” Bousquet said. “This is not going to be xed overnight.” Such troubles will eventually land on the shoulders of dairy farmers.
“There are several different factors that are logistically causing major problems,” Bousquet said. Truck drivers are putting on hundreds of additional miles and up to ve more hours of drive time on a route. Not only has this put unnecessary

pressure on drivers to deliver the milk load to the processing plants, but it has also pressed electronic logging regulations. Cooperatives and rst purchasers do subsidize projected hauling costs, but the additional expense
of hauling through extended routes will become the dairy farmers’ responsibilities, Bousquet said. “It’s going to be catchall,” he said. “Those projections for subsidies are now off and it will affect farmer’s PPD on their milk check. In the long run, they’re going to be paid less.” Additionally, with stored grain and elds entirely destroyed, farmers need to make alternative plans to provide feed for their herd – plans that will certainly be costly. “Nothing compares to what we’ve seen. This is the worst of its kind … it’s heartbreaking,” Bousquet said. “We’re here as an open line of transparency. We want to know where you’re hurting and how we can help.” Bousquet and representatives from cattle, soybean and corn commodity groups are working with Rickett and Nebraska Department of Agriculture Director Steve Wellmen, along with other key ofcials, to prioritize recovery efforts and offset the weight of the disaster for farmers across the state.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I’m the FFA chapter president and captain of the horse judging team. In 4-H, I show my horse. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? FFA is my favorite because I love meeting new people. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. At the FFA state convention I got to go on stage for placing second with my prociency in entrepreneurship and my horse training work. What’s your favorite social media? Snapchat, because it is fast and easy to talk to my friends and show them what I am doing. What are your career aspirations? I want to go to school for nursing then work in the emergency room. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? I have learned and gained condence in talking to people who I don’t know very well. Who do you look up to? My brother, Jake, because he has a great work ethic and is very passionate about what he does. I hope one day I can be like that in my work eld. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I am organized and messy at the same time. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. My main duties on the farm are to milk cows and help at the chicken barn picking eggs. Sometimes when I’m not at school I will help with mixing feed. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would change the seasons. I would keep spring, summer and fall and get rid of winter.
