AMPI reports $1.7 billion in sales Dairy farmer-owners review cooperative’s performance at annual meeting Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) delivered sales of $1.7 billion and earnings of $9.3 million in 2012, announced leaders of the milk marketing cooperative owned by 2,900 Upper Midwest dairy farmers. Some 350 voting delegates and guests are reviewing the company’s progress during their annual business meeting that concludes tomorrow at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington, Minn. AMPI’s core products were the cooperative’s top performers in 2012. Cheese production, which represents 57 percent of total sales, grew by more than 11 million pounds as compared to one year earlier. Butter production continued to grow steadily, increasing 5 million pounds. Consumer-packaged cheese and butter represented nearly half of the cooperative’s sales. “Our cheese-packaging plant in Portage, Wis., and the New Ulm, Minn., butter plant were major contributors to the cooperative’s bottom line. In the last ve years, our consumer-packaged cheese and butter sales have grown exponentially,” said AMPI President and CEO Ed Welch, who indicated orders from food service customers fueled much of the growth. Following the performance review, AMPI Chairman of the Board Steve Schlangen discussed the cooperative’s strategies for long-term performance. “As a dairy farmer-owned cooperative, AMPI is uniquely positioned to market our locally produced dairy products to food service, retail and food ingredient customers across the nation,” he said. Strengthening the cooperative’s manufacturing portfolio, with a renewed focus on cheese, butter and powdered dairy products, led to the sale of two businesses in 2012. “Selling the Cass-Clay® plant and brand in Fargo, N.D., and our cheese sauce and pudding business in Dawson, Minn., was a bold step,” Schlangen said. “However, these two businesses accounted for only ve percent of AMPI’s total annual revenue.” The annual meeting culminates with delegates considering resolutions and reviewing the cooperative’s legislative priorities. World Dairy Expo implementing new cattle identication in 2013 World Dairy Expo is introducing changes to their dairy cattle health check-in process. In an effort to strengthen the event biosecurity and in accordance with the new USDA Animal Disease Traceability (ADT) rule, exhibitors bringing cattle to World Dairy Expo will need to have an accepted World Dairy Expo-dened ID tag in the animal’s ear upon entering the grounds. Within this rule change, registration numbers and breed tattoos will no longer be ofcial identication for interstate transport. At the March 4, 2013 WDE Dairy Cattle Exhibitor Committee meeting it was approved to require all cattle, including those from Wisconsin, to meet the same World Dairy Expo health check-in identication standard. The following ID tags will be accepted by World Dairy Expo for health check-in starting in 2013: • A Canadian Cattle Identication Agency (CCIA) Radio Frequency Identication Device (RFID) tag – 15 digit number starting with 124 • A USDA 840 Animal Identication Number (AIN) RFID Tag – 15 digit number starting with 840 • A USDA 840 Animal Identication Number (AIN) Visual Tag – 15 digit number starting with 840 • *A manufacturer coded tamper evident RFID tag – 15 digit number starting with 900 or greater NOTE: Manufacturer coded RFID tags will be discontinued as ofcial ID by USDA starting in 2015. Dairy Security Act would have increased farm milk prices more than $1 per cwt. Had it been in effect last year, NMPF ofcial tells Midwest Dairy Leaders Milk prices for Midwest dairy farmers would have been more than $1.00 per hundredweight higher last year if the proposed federal Dairy Security Act (DSA) program had been available to them, a national dairy industry ofcial told cooperative farm leaders gathered here Wednesday for the Minnesota-Wisconsin Dairy Policy Conference. Jim Mulhern, Chief Operating Ofcer for the National Milk Producers Federation and a Wisconsin native, said a farmer with 200 cows, who purchased margin coverage at a level of $6.50 per hundredweight, would have received more than $44,000 in additional payments in 2012 under the Dairy Security Act that is now pending before Congress. “The DSA was designed for the type of conditions we experienced last year: high feed costs and weak farm milk prices. If DSA had been in effect, dairy farmers who chose to participate in the program would have received margin insurance payments to cover increased costs and would have had to make only small reductions in milk output under DSA’s market stabilization program,” Mulhern said. “The net increase in farm revenue at the $6.50 margin coverage level would have averaged more than $2,000 per cow for the year,” he said. “This is income that would not have been received by a farmer if they weren’t in the program.” The Dairy Security Act was approved by both the House and Senate Agriculture Committees during consideration of last year’s farm bill. The full Senate also approved the bill, but the House failed to vote on the farm bill last year, so Congress is now beginning efforts to pass a farm bill this year. Mulhern said the Senate Agriculture Committee is expected to begin work on a new farm bill later this month, and the House Agriculture Committee likely will follow later this spring. “I believe Congress will pass a farm bill this year, and when all the dust settles, DSA will be the dairy pro-
gram in the nal bill,” he said. “Congress will adopt the DSA because it is the only program that truly provides an effective safety net without busting the budget. “The plan’s combination of affordable margin insurance and a stabilization program to quickly send production signals to producers when market prices are falling is specically designed to protect both farmers and taxpayers,” Mulhern said. A margin insurance-only alternative proposed by milk processors is irresponsible, Mulhern said, because it would create price-depressing milk surpluses and potentially cost billions of dollars. “It would be terrible for our industry to enact a margin insurance-only program that guaranteed processors access to cheap milk by encouraging excess milk production, but that is exactly what some have proposed. An insurance-only program is dangerous because, by insulating producers through insurance payments, it actually prevents market signals from getting through,” he said. Mulhern added that realistic insurance rates under a margin-only program would have to be much higher than those proposed in the Dairy Security Act in order to cover a greater portion of the cost of such a program. “We are able to keep the insurance rates affordable under the DSA because the market stabilization program will help keep supply and demand in better balance,” he said. “Without stabilization, a margin-only program could become prohibitively expensive for small- and medium-sized producers to participate. That would be damaging here in the Midwest, and throughout the country.”

To evaluate whether corn is ground ne enough, purchase a hand-crank our sifter. Weigh-out 10 ounces of ground corn and sift the sample until it appears that all particles and nes that can get through the screen have done so. Weigh out the remaining particles on the screen. Compare the weight of the material that remains on the screen with the following information and evaluate your grinding process accordingly: • 1 ounce = 750 microns = excellent • 2 ounces = 800 microns = excellent • 3 ounces = 900 microns = good • 4 ounces = 1,000 microns = fair • 5 ounces = 1,200 microns = very poor • >5 ounces = >1,200 microns = disaster “Any corn below 22 percent moisture should be 600 to 700 microns,” notes LaCount. Samples of ground corn can also be submitted to a laboratory for more precise evaluation.
