March tornadoes damage dairy farms in Iowa, Wisconsin

SHERRILL, IOWA – The spring storm season began on a damaging note for at least four dairy farms in parts of eastern Iowa and southwest Wisconsin. The farms sustained damage in what the National Weather Service identied as EF-1 tornadoes March 28. No injuries were reported from the storms. Among the hardest hit areas was Sherrill, where Brimeyer
Farms lost many of their farm buildings to the tornado that cut more than a 4-mile swath through a valley in Dubuque County. Fortunately, the damage to the Brimeyer farm and that of a neighbor, Tom Cook and his family, left the milking parlors and homes intact. “It’s just amazing. On every farm (around Sherrill), the house stayed standing,” said Rick Brimeyer, who milks 480 cows with his wife, Judy, and his son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Jessy.

The Brimeyers lost the later. heifers. The tornado also did extensive damage to a newer freestall barn and a 30-by-60-foot shop, and destroyed two grain bins. It was 6:30 p.m. near Oelwein, Iowa, when a separate tornado hit the dairy operated by Dennis and Joan Worden and their son, Jacob, leaving one calf with a broken leg and others on the loose after three calf condos and a super hutch were blown over. The Wordens also lost the machine shed where Dennis and Jacob took shelter. Another building had its roof peeled back. “It somehow went between the house and ve other buildings,” Joan said. Another stroke of luck was realized during cleanup two days later when a support beam still standing in the machine shed went down. Had it fallen at the time of the storm, it may have trapped the Worden men. Two hours later, the Sherrill tornado did its damage. Rick and Judy were at home about one-half mile from the farm. Matt, who lives in the farmhouse, called his father after the tornado went through. “He said, ‘Everything’s gone,’ and I thought he was kidding,” Rick said. “I went down there and saw the milking facility and it all looked good.” Because of the way the farm is laid out, in the dark he could not see the real damage surrounding it. Using lights and a generator, cows were quickly moved to the holding pen while excavators moved large pieces of the roof from the freestall barn where the milking herd is housed. A 30-foot addition to one end of the barn had collapsed, while gaping holes were torn in other parts of the roof. There were no cows underneath. By 1:30 a.m., Rick said they were able to operate the manure scrapers to push out the remaining debris. The Brimeyers lost only a Hereford bull and one dairy cow with a broken leg the night of the storm, but others have been culled. “Every day since we’ve been nding cows limping. I think they were hit with falling debris,” Rick said. The Bartels lost seven head of livestock, but the most difcult death was a rodeo horse belonging to their daughter, Laura. “We say we all lost a lot, but she lost the most,” Mandy said. Both the Brimeyers and the Bartels felt their community’s support. At Brimeyers, cleanup of the debris strewn across the elds around the farm only took one day. “There were many, many people here,” Rick said. “There were so many side-by-sides out there with trailers picking up stuff. Even the debris stuck to the fences was cleaned up.” Carpenters were able to start working on the freestall roof by the following Monday morning. “It brings tears to your eyes more than the damage brings tears to your eyes,” Rick said. “The help, the people, even the food they brought.” Mandy said she posted about the storm on Facebook immediately after it hit. “I got a call from a friend and before we knew it there was a plan in place,” she said. Twenty trucks and trailers hauled the dairy cattle to her sister-in-law’s farm an hour away. Scott and Amanda Williams of Lead Mine, Wisconsin, had recently dispersed their dairy herd and used their facility to milk Bartels’ cows while the Bartels considered their next steps. Their beef cattle are being housed on other farms. The Bartels also had plenty of help with cleanup. “I bet there were 200 or 250 people here Sunday,” Mandy said. “I walked into my kitchen and there were about 45 ladies making food and cleaning. They were doing what Midwest women do.” Scott, Mandy and Laura are staying with their youngest son. A friend has started a GoFundMe account for the family which had raised nearly $20,000 by the end of last week.

Kroepliens detail insurance process after plane crashes into calf barn By Stacey Smart

MADISON, Wis. – Farms spend many dollars each year for insurance coverage. According to Dave Becker, founder of Dairy Business Consulting Group, the average cost of liability and property insurance for his clients in 2019 was $55 per cow. The hope is to never have to make a claim, but if catastrophe occurs, a farm needs to know they will be covered. During a panel facilitated by Becker titled, “Stuff happens ... are you covered?” at the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin Virtual Business Conference March 18-19 in Madison, Jim Kroeplien and his daughter, Rachel, along with Marty Hallock, explained how they survived disaster and provided tips on what to do when the unexpected happens. Nobody expects a plane to crash into their farm, yet that is exactly what happened to the Kroeplien family July 20, 2018. An antique aircraft crashed into one of the farm’s greenhouses used to raise calves. It was only a 13-second ight from takeoff to crashing, and the
plane was estimated to be traveling at 110 mph when it touched down. The Kroepliens lost 50 calves from the incident, and two employees suffered major injuries. The pilot of the 1959 vintage British aircraft was killed on impact. It was a tragic event that changed everything in a split second. “Something like this really turns your world upside down,” Jim said. Jim and his wife, Chris, own Jim Kroeplien Fly By Acres in Sheboygan Falls where they milk 550 cows, crop 800 acres and run a custom planting and combining business. Rachel serves as the farm’s human resources and public relations manRachel Kroeplien ager. The plane hit during calf feeding. One employee was found lying within two feet of the ruptured fuel tanks, right around the corner from where a re had started. The other employee met the nose of the plane and was within 35 feet of it when it entered the building. Another fuel tank landed within 15 feet of her but neither tank exploded. The male employee spent 27 days in the intensive care unit and was unconscious for nine days. “When I rst saw him, I thought he was dead,” Jim said. “He was hit with a lot of shrapnel and possibly even a fuel tank. He literally got blown out of his
shoes. The girl had massive head injuries, lost her right ear, dislocated her shoulder and also busted a couple ngers.” Although the experience was devastating, the Kroepliens knew it could have been worse. Luckily, the crash and its damage were conned to one area of the farm. The plane, which holds 1,200 liters of fuel, crashed in close range of gas lines, chemicals and numerous buildings containing livestock, but those areas were spared. The incident required the Kroepliens to use several of their insurance policies, including fuel clean-up, workers’ compensation, replacement value, equipment and loss of income. “Our insurance man was great,” Jim said. “He told us, ‘You’re well insured, don’t worry about it. We got you covered.’ We took that to heart. But your insurance adjuster is probably the guy you have to deal with the most, and we did not have as good of words with him as we were hoping. That’s when things started going the other way.” The Kroepliens ended up hiring an attorney. “That cost us a lot of money,” Jim said. “And once you hire an attorney, you can no longer talk to your insurance adjuster. Everything has to go through your attorney and their attorney which just muddled the water even more.” The Kroepliens’ policy includes a hazardous waste endorsement for $50,000. “That’s probably where the whole thing got really ugly really quick,” Jim said. “Two fuel cells ruptured and leaked on the farm causing a fuel spill. This is where we got into an argument with our insurance adjuster. I didn’t
think we should have to use our hazardous endorsement policy for this because we weren’t responsible.” Workers’ compensation insurance was used to cover the two employees injured in the crash, one of whom had to be airlifted from the farm. Jim said he was told this portion of his insurance would be increasing to the maximum rate as a result. “We got a renewal notice from our insurance company, and our premiums went up $2,500 per month, which we believe is due to workman’s comp,” Jim said. “That adds up to $30,000 per year, and we had nothing to do with this incident.” The Kroepliens’ insurance policy also included replacement cost on some of their buildings. “We ended up OK on this, but be ready for a ght,” Jim said. “Anything attached to your building is considered part of the building and will not be paid separately unless it is line itemized. The security systems in our greenhouses were not line itemed, so we did not receive anything extra for those. Same with the calf pens.” Thirty-three calves died or had to be euthanized the day of the crash. Another 17 calves were shipped within a month due to excess smoke and fuel inhalation. The Kroepliens had lowered cow values on their policy in recent years but not calf values which still carried a value of $500 each. Insurance was only willing to pay $100 per calf. For equipment, the Kroepliens have umbrella coverage and rental coverage which was needed for a corn unit that was partially burnt by one of the plane’s Turn to DISASTER | Page 5

ConĆ&#x;nued from DISASTER | Page 4 fuel tanks. “We do have an umbrella policy, and I encourage everyone to have one,â€? Jim said. “That was probably the least amount of our issues. We also have a rental policy for $25,000.â€? The farm’s loss of income policy covers $250,000. Heifers were sent to a custom raiser following the loss of the calf barn. Due to the fuel spill, setting up calf huts was not an immediate option. “We had a $7,000 to $8,000 heifer raising bill each month that we never had before,â€? Jim said. “Insurance would only pay part of it because they felt we should’ve kept calves here although they never offered us any extra money for huts.â€?
Jim stressed the importance of having a crisis plan. Although they never planned for a plane crash speciďƒžcally, the Kroepliens had planned for things like a tornado or ďƒžre, so they knew what they had to do in a crisis situation. “We work with our ďƒžrst responders quite a bit and have a great relationship with them, as well as our sheriff’s department,â€? Rachel said. “They knew the exact setup of our farm before the accident took place, and we think that really helped.â€? Jim said it is a good idea to update and review insurance and crisis plans regularly. “People move, and markets ďƒ&#x;uctuate quite a bit,â€? he said. “For example,
don’t insure calves for $500 if they’re only worth $100 because you’re not going to get the $500 you’re paying a premium on.� The Kroepliens have since lowered a couple items on their policy, including loss of income coverage and values on some animals which decreased premiums by about $1,000 per month. When crisis strikes, document everything. Jim said he carried around a notebook the next day and took many notes. Another person took pictures. “Make sure everything is on paper because you’re going to forget things,� Jim said. “We have a 5-inch binder and tote of paperwork on the incident which
also includes all insurance communications.� Rachel also recommended going to the hospital. “You start to notice things when your adrenaline slows down,� she said. “We were in the greenhouse surrounded by fumes and intaking a lot of fuel for about an hour. The next day, we had black gunk coming out of our lungs, and a lot of us were really sick. Documenting your injuries helps with insurance.� Jim agreed. “The family should’ve got checked out by paramedics sooner,� he said. “We were all on medication from inhaling fumes.�

LONG GROVE, Iowa – Gene Newell does not let age limit him. “I keep on doing things I like,” Newell said. This includes riding his bike, driving his motorcycle and dairy farming. At the age of 89, Newell is still dairy farming every day with help from his son, Dan, who Newell employs on his 50-cow dairy near Long Grove. “Farming is my real love,” Newell said. “I love the crops. I love the livestock. I was disappointed when we got rid of the chickens and the hogs. I love the pigs.” Dairy is included in this love of livestock. Daily responsibilities for Newell include bookwork and minor equipment maintenance. Dan takes care of daily milking and feeding. Throughout
the year, Newell also cleans the yards, hauls manure and does most of the eldwork. “Hauling manure makes my mouth water because I know it’s such good fertility for the next crop,” Newell said. “I like hauling manure, and I like baling hay. Even when we made small squares, I liked baling hay. Now everything is round bales.” Newell is amazed at how much has changed over the years in hay making. “When we rst used bagged silage, I said, ‘Silage in a bag? It will never work.’ But it sure does,” Newell said. There have been many changes since Newell’s start in the industry as a young boy. Newell grew up on his grandparents’ dairy, learning how to milk cows by hand and care for the diversied farm of hogs, beef cows and chickens. Every Tuesday, Newell’s grandfather would take the cream to town to sell along

The Newell family introduced registered Ayrshires to the grade Holstein herd in the 1960s. with butter he had made and eggs from the chickens. “He always impressed on me that during the Depression the dairy farmers were the people who always had something to eat and always had an income from the cream and the butter,” Newell said. “I thought, if it works good in the Depression, wouldn’t it work good in good times, too? I’ve always liked dairy cattle from that standpoint.” When his grandparents stopped farming and moved to town, Newell continued to work for the neighbors of his grandparents. “It’s about a 3-mile stretch, and I worked for every farmer on
that road,” Newell said. Newell would work for the families, earning $45 per month throughout the summer. “It was all hand carry, hand feeding and hand manure handling,” Newell said. “Unless it was on the manure spreader. Then it was easy.” Then he met his wife, Shirley, and started working on her family’s farm when he was 19 years old. When he was 21, Newell went into the service. When he returned, he and Shirley were married when he was 23, and the two of them started farming together with Shirley’s parents. Like many multi-generation farms today, there were challeng-
es working with family. “My father-in-law was good to us, but he didn’t like to spend money on concrete,” Newell said. “And I wanted to keep the cows up out of the mud. He didn’t believe in cutting hay. And I wanted to cut that alfalfa early.” Although they did not always see eye-to-eye, Newell worked together with his in-laws. In 1960, they put in a bulk tank. “People pushing bulk tanks at the time said the milk was much better quality,” Newell said. “I didn’t believe them. After we put the bulk tank in, I was

That milk really was tastier probably because of the ability to cool it quickly.” When Newell and Shirley took ownership of the farm in 1965, they made a few changes. They rst doubled all of their livestock in a three-year span. This meant milking 40 cows, caring for 30 sows and feeding dozens of chickens. Another change included borrowing $20,000 to build a double-6 herringbone parlor with weigh jars. “Other than the parlor, we didn’t have a lot of conveniences in those rst years,” Newell said. “With all that extra work, my management was not as good as it should have been. I blamed it on not having enough time. We were over worked, but who isn’t?” Despite the work, the couple grew their farm and their family, raising three children on the farm, which eventually sold the hogs and chickens. “Naturally there were ups and downs, but I never regretted one of them,” Newell said. “We had a good time raising our kids on the farm.” They were very involved in showing through 4-H, which is how the Newells ventured into the Ayrshire breed alongside their Holsteins. “When the kids were in 4-H, I said, ‘Let’s go buy something that’s got a little different color,’” Newell said. “That way when they’re up on the hill the kids could say, ‘The red and white ones are ours.’” Now the herd is equal parts Holsteins and Ayrshires with many crossbreds in the mix, and is still milked in the same parlor they built in the 1960s, although they did make one upgrade to the parlor over the years. Newell has seen a lot of change in the industry, including the use of automated milking. One of his daughters now uses robots on her family’s dairy in northern Minnesota. “I’m sad I can’t get into that type of dairying,” Newell said. “But it’s so costly that I should not make that kind of investment at my age. Right now with depressed prices, it’s nice to know our set up is 50 years old, and we don’t owe anything on it.” For the future of dairy, Newell thinks consolidation will continue. “Family farms will get bigger with several families of that family owning it,” Newell said. “It will be family companies rather than just family farms.” With his many years of experience, Newell has a bit of advice for anyone else dairy farming. “Dairying is usually a pretty good income, and I don’t begrudge anyone who’s young to go ahead and stay modernized, but be careful,” Newell said. “Getting bigger is not always good. It costs you a lot of money to get bigger, and then it costs a lot of money to stay bigger. Even at 70 cows, I think we make just as much money or more when we stay at 50 cows.” Regardless of the size of his herd, Newell has loved his life’s work. And he does not let age get in the way.

NEW GLARUS, Wis. – Each spring, for many dairy cattle enthusiasts both young and old, spring fever hits. Spring show fever, that is. They dig out their white pants and show halters, dust off their clippers and load up the trailer to head to a variety of state, regional and national spring shows. This spring has a very different look to it. Just as exhibitors were planning to attend the earliest of spring shows, the reality of the novel coronavirus spread like wildre across the country, prompting show organizers to cancel. While many were disheartened by the loss of what is traditionally the beginning of their springtime socialization, ideas began to brew for new and innovative ideas to bring dairy cattle enthusiasts together through social media. The National Ayrshire Youth program held a Virtual Spring Show for their juniors on their Facebook page. “One day doing chores, I was brainstorming ways to increase trafc to our page and visibility for our youth programs,” said Jessica Valentine of Thurmont, Maryland, who serves as the National Ayrshire Youth Coordinator. “My own kids had been making preparations to exhibit at a couple of spring shows and were really disappointed by the cancellations. I know there are a lot of kids out there working with their calves, and I wanted to give them something fun to do.” Brothers Mason Lien, 10, and Rylan Schenk, 6, each sent in a photo of their Ayrshire projects with help from their mom, Kenna Kirsnis. The boys have grown up on their family’s 100cow RK Genetics dairy farm near New Glarus, Wisconsin. “Both boys are very eager to help and are hard workers and are members
of the New Glarus 4-H,” Kenna said. Both boys enjoy working with their project calves and exhibiting them at the Green County Fair. Mason participates in the 4-H dairy project while Rylan participates in the Cloverbud program and the Little Britches classes. The virtual show gave them the opportunity to share their calves. “My calf is my favorite animal on the farm,” Mason said of his calf Winks. “At the shows, getting them full is my favorite thing.” Rylan agreed. “I like to love on my calves,” he said. “I like to wash them and practice showing them.” Valentine said that over 60 youth from around the country sent in photos of their Ayrshire project calves. The contest required youth to submit photos of their projects now as opposed to past professional photos or showring photos. Youth had the opportunity to claim prizes in three categories: conformation, where a judge selected the winner based on type; a popular winner based on the most likes; and then ve prizes were given away through a random selection from all entries. The youth group is planning a scavengerhunt type contest. The Wisconsin Holstein Association took their own take on virtual entertainment after canceling the Midwest Spring Dairy Showcase, scheduled to be held later this month in Madison. “There was certainly a nancial impact from not having a spring show,” said Laura Wackershauser, Wisconsin Holstein Association executive director. “The largest impact is on our membership. Many Wisconsin Holstein members, along with the Jersey and Red and White breeders, use the shows as a marketing tool for their genetics, and an opportunity to sell project calves or advertise their breeding for future sales.” WHA staff members contemplated doing a virtual show but played off of the disappointment many were feeling mid-March at the loss of the NCAA March Madness tournament. Wackershauser said. “This is something we’ve done for fun, as a trip down memory lane, to see how the more recent champions match up against ones from earlier years.â€? Each round has played out on Facebook with followers of the WHA Facebook page voting for their favorite in
Members who completed their own bracket before the voting started will be entered into a drawing for a Culver’s gift card, and the owner of the bracket with the most correct picks will also receive a prize. Dairy Agenda Today, a national dairy industry news website, added a promotional spin to the idea of a virtual spring show to help breeders showcase their best animals. “With all the spring shows being canceled, people should have the opportunity to share their potential class winners with the world,� said editor Melissa Hart of North Adams, Michigan. “This is good for morale, too. Everyone is concerned about what is going on in the world right now and in the dairy industry. I hope this will serve as a stress reliever for a lot of people, too.� The Spring Fever Online Show will be open to all breeds and have a full complement of classes, as well as champions named. Dairy Agenda Today is working with sponsors for prizes. Well-known dairy cattle judges Mark Rueth of Oxford, and Tammy Voegeli of Arlington, will place the animals based on 1-minute videos submitted by the exhibitors. “Many breeders from around the country rely on the spring shows and sales to market their best animals,� Hart said. “That added income from cattle sales is something many count on for their bottom line each year. This will help them get the advertising exposure they might be missing for a relatively small cost.�

“We initially began the transition from flat storage to uprights with the goal of reducing dry matter losses and loss of feed value. In addition to reducing losses, we have noticed a dramatic increase in feed bunk stability and a complete absence of salmonella or any mold and/ or mycotoxin related illnesses. Get to know Amber Engelken of Earlville, Iowa
What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in FFA, 4-H and the Iowa Junior Holstein Association. Through these organizations, I’ve shown dairy at the county fair, participated in dairy judging and dairy quiz bowl, and partaken in various Junior Holstein activities. I’ve served as the 2019 Delaware County Dairy Princess Alternate and am serving as the 2020 Iowa Holstein Princess.
Who do you look up to? My dad. He’s the hardest worker I know, and he never gives up no matter how hard the task is. His persistence and inability to give up has shown me the hard work, dedication and long hours that it takes to be a farmer. I’ve been blessed to have such a great gure to look up to my whole life and can only hope I can take what he taught me and use it for the rest of my life. Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know. Something people may not know about me is that I’ve competed at three national contests in the last two years. I’ve judged at the North American Livestock Exposition, judged at the National FFA Convention, and I’ve competed at the national quiz bowl competition. In all of these contests, my team has placed in the top 10.
Why are you involved in these activities/ organizations and what is your favorite? I’m involved in these organizations to step out of my comfort zones, meet new people and expand my knowledge about dairy. My favorite organization is FFA because of all the different paths it has. I’ve learned a lot about different aspects of agriculture and have made so many friends along with making endless memories from my past four years being involved. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Competing in the national quiz bowl competition in Louisville, Kentucky, this past fall. We nished third, and I was awarded sixth-place test taker, but my favorite part of competing was all of the fun we had and the friends we made. I’ll never forget cheering on our new friend from New York when she was in the championship round. What is your favorite social media? Instagram. This app brings posts from Twitter and TikTok, making it a platform to get your message out. In addition, it primarily shows people pictures, and I believe that pictures are how you get someone’s attention. They can listen to what you say all day, but until they actually see what you’re talking about, they won’t believe you.
Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I help milk cows almost every night along with assisting in taking care of fresh cows and calves. I help with miscellaneous chores around the farm when needed, such as raking freestalls or drying cows up. I also am responsible for making management decisions about the small herd of crossbreds I own. SHERRY NEWELL/DAIRY STAR
Amber Engelken is a senior at Maquoketa Valley High School. She dairy farms with her parents, Tom and Cherrie, and sisters, Nicole and Amanda, in Delaware County near Earlville, Iowa. What are your career aspirations? I am attending Iowa State University this fall to major in agricultural exploration. I don’t know exactly what I want to do yet, so I plan on discovering that while learning about all of the possible avenues I can go into through agriculture. For my career, my goal is to be successful by making an impact on my community and being happy within my job.

What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? Aside from learning a tremendous amount about the dairy industry and dairy cattle as a whole, I’ve learned endless life lessons. For people to buy your products, you have to have their trust. I would change this by using social media to my advantage. There are billions of users on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, making it a great platform to spread your message. Spreading positive messages about the dairy industry increases trust with consumers, making them want to buy your products.

NOTE: This is a very good herd of extremely well uddered, young, large frame, high producing Holstein cattle. This herd has been on test for over 50 years with current records indicating a herd average of 2X 22,000 pounds milk, 3.8% 836 fat and 3.3% 726 protein. Herd is currently maintaining a 84 pound tank average with 11 head milking over 100 pounds per day. SCC currently averaging from 170,00 to 184,000. The herd is milked in a tie-stall facility with dry cows housed in free stall area. The herd has been artificially bred since the 1950’s and has been mated the past 40 years. The Bosers have used primarily Select and ABS Sires; including, but not limited to: Mogul, Supersire, Azor, Rio, Superior, Sumo and Nathan, among others. An excellent herd health program has been in place for decades using Triangle Ten HB, all are Bangs vaccinated, and cows are wormed and poured regularly using Safe Guard. Hooves are trimmed regularly. Dry cows are treated with Spectramast DC and Orbeseal. Along with a great set of mature females, we offer an exceptional group of select bred and open heifers that are all sired by leading sires and out of top Boser dams.
