Low interest loans available through the MN RFA BY RYAN ROLES MN Rural Finance Authority

Access to credit is essential for any modern business, and that is especially true in agriculture. To help ensure that Minnesota’s farmers have access to affordable credit, the Minnesota Rural Finance Authority (RFA) was created in 1986. The RFA mission is to partner with local lenders to provide affordable credit to eligible farmers. The low-interest loans can be used to help beginning or established farmers nance upgrades or other changes to their operations. The RFA participates with local lenders, purchasing a 45 percent interest in the lender’s loan up to $300,000 under the Beginning Farmer, Seller Assisted, and Agricultural Improvement programs. The maximum loan participation is $400,000 under the Livestock Expansion and Restructure II programs. The RFA participation is set up on a reduced interest rate, and this lowers the interest rate the farmer pays on the loan. This lower interest rate strengthens the farmer’s cash ow, and it helps share the risk of making the loan with the lender. Loans can have an interest rate xed up to 10 years. A beginning farmer with a net worth under $428,000 can use the RFA’s Beginning Farmer loan program to purchase farm real estate with a minimum down payment of 10 percent. For example, RFA recently helped a young farmer purchase a 1,000-head cattle feeding facility with this program. The borrower put 10 percent down and also had a family member co-sign the loan. The loan amortization was negotiated with the lender for 15 years. The current interest rate on this program is 2.75 percent. The Seller Assisted loan program is similar to the Beginning Farmer with one exception. This program is designed to permit the sellers of a farm to fund a portion of the transaction and the borrower’s down payment is negotiable. A farmer can use the Agricultural Improvement loan program if they are looking to purchase or construct a new livestock facility, grain handling facility, machine storage building, or improve a manure system. A farmer in southeast Minnesota used this program to construct a new freestall barn to increase his dairy herd to 120 cows. By utilizing the RFA, the farmer was able to receive a reduction in interest rate of 2 percent compared to his bank interest rate. This program has a maximum net worth of $428,000 and a current interest rate of 3.25 percent. An existing farmer looking to expand his or her livestock operation can use the Livestock Expansion loan program. A farmer can nance improvements to land and buildings as long as it is for the purpose of raising livestock. The RFA has nanced projects to construct new dairy barns, renovate old dairy barns, and upgrade barns with robotic milkers over the past few years. The maximum net worth is $806,000 and has a 3.75 percent interest rate. The Livestock Equipment Pilot loan program allows a farmer to purchase livestock related equipment such as equipment used for animal housing, animal feeding, milk production, waste management, fences, and watering systems. A loan may be made up to 90 percent of the purchase price with a maximum loan amount of $40,000 at an interest rate of 3.0 percent. Recently a young farmer was able to purchase a used skid loader, manure spreader, bale grinder, and bunks for his expanding dairy operation by using this program. The Restructure II can help farmers reorganize their farm debt to improve cash ow. The maximum net worth is $806,000 with an interest rate of 3.75 percent. Wisconsin cow recognized as 2011 Holstein Association USA Star of the Breed Hazel-Bush Flap Flower has claimed the title of Holstein Association USA’s 2011 Star of the Breed. This award is given annually to one Holstein cow that not only excels in the showring, but is an exceptional milk producer as well. Flower was bred by Hazel Bush Farms, Inc., of Rice Lake, Wis., and is owned by 22-year-old Beth Nelson of Blair, Wis. To be eligible for the Star of the Breed award, a cow must place in the top ve in her class at a National Holstein Show in the award year, be in a herd enrolled in the TriStar program and have an ofcial classication score. Once the eligible cows are determined, the following calculation is used to decide the award recipient: Combined ME Fat and Protein + Age Adjusted Classication Score x (Breed Average ME Combined Fat & Protein/Breed Average Age Adjusted Classication Score). Flower was born in July 2006, and is sired by My-John Free Flap-ET, out of Hazel-Bush Delaware Dixie. She made an outstanding milk record this past year, calving in at 4-05, producing 59,160 pounds of milk with 4.2 percent fat (2,471 pounds) and 2.9 percent protein (1,744 pounds) in 365 days. Flower is classied Excellent-92 EEEEE, scoring the maximum 50 in both rear udder height and width. In 2011, Flower was the third place Five-Year-Old at both the Midwest Spring National Holstein Show and the Mid-East Fall National Holstein Show. Beth is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Farm and Industry Short Course and now works fulltime with her parents, Lee and Becky, at their dairy farm. They milk 150 cows twice a day in a double-10 parabone parlor, the herd primarily comprised of Holsteins, approximately 20 percent of which are registered. The cattle are housed in sand bedded freestalls, with a pack barn for fresh cows, and their ration consists of a TMR with an ample amount of dry hay. The farm’s rolling herd average currently sits at 24,500 pounds of milk, maintaining a 98,000 SCC, which has earned them several milk quality awards. Five of these scholarships are for students pursuing agriculture-related degrees with the rest going to students seeking degrees in other elds. Here are the winners of the 2012 Swiss Valley Farms College Scholarships: Dylan Humpal, Ridgeway, Iowa is the recipient of a $1,000 Swiss Valley Farms scholarship for an agriculture major. Dylan is the son of Dale and Mary Jo Humpal and a recent graduate of South Winneshiek High School. Kimberly Strait, Preston, Iowa is the recipient of a $1,000 Swiss Valley Farms scholarship for an agriculture major. Holstein Association USA recognizes seven as 2012 Herds of Excellence Seven U.S. Registered Holstein®breeders have earned the distinction of being named 2012 Holstein Association USA Herds of Excellence. Study confirms polyethylene calf hutches favorable through summer Polyethylene hutches offer calves the option to choose individual microclimates and avoid ultraviolet rays. A study conducted by the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine concludes that polyethylene calf hutches provide a cooler alternative to open wire hutches throughout the heat of summer months. The study was conducted by Dr. Carlos Risco, professor of food animal reproduction and medicine service at the University of Florida’s Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. Risco’s team’s goal was to determine calf performance and health of calves raised in polyethylene hutches with ridge top vents and rear adjustable door versus housing built of open wire during peak summer temperatures in Florida. Risco indicates that a primary component of the study was to determine the correlation between outside temperatures, the climate near each calf and overall calf health. For the trial, 100 heifer calves born in June 2010 were randomly assigned to a Calf-Tel® polyethylene hutch or a wire hutch and remained in the allocated housing until being weaned that August. Outside temperatures in Bell, Fla., averaged 80, 83 and 84 degrees F in June, July and August respectively, with an outside temperature humidity index of 78.8 percent. High temperatures for each of the months at the location of the trial were: 98, 97 and 98 degrees F, respectively. Over the course of the study, data was collected on outside temperatures, hutch temperatures, calf weaning weights and calf respiratory rates in order to measure calf performance. The research indicated the enclosed polyethylene calf hutches offered protection from the sun throughout the day and had the coolest temperatures inside during both the coolest and hottest parts of the day. The combination of the polyethylene plastic and an ultraviolet-blocking pigment in the hutch material encouraged calves to stay inside the protected area during peak temperatures, while an outdoor option still allowed room for exercise. Risco reports that, though respiratory rates and rectal temperatures increased during the warmer times of the day, calves in the hutches had fewer health problems and received fewer treatments than calves housed in wire. People in the dairy community Former DFL Rep. Ken Tschumper to take on GOP Rep. Greg Davids It’s round three for former DFL Rep. Ken Tschumper and GOP Rep. Greg Davids. Democrats recently endorsed Tschumper for the House District 28B seat. The La Crescent dairy farmer will take on Davids for the third time. In 2006, Tschumper pulled off a major upset, beating the longtime Preston Republican by 52 votes. Two years later, Tschumper lost his re-election bid to Davids. Tschumper defeated Spring Valley City Council member Tony Archer to win the endorsement. In a statement, Tschumper said that in the past two months, Davids and the Republicans have made state government dysfunctional, “catering to powerful special interest groups with extreme positions on taxes and a focus on divisive social issues. Where are the jobs they promised in the 2010 election?” Mixed martial artist, Tommy Speer, battling cancer Last month, martial artist and dairy farmer, Tommy Speer, 27, was diagnosed with melanoma, a form of skin cancer. Speer who farms on his family’s dairy near Elgin, Minn., underwent surgery to remove a cancerous mole from his back. “It ended up being one of the least aggressive forms of melanoma, so the chance of it spreading to my lymph nodes was pretty low,” Speer told the Rochester Bulletin. “They made things sound Tommy Speer pretty bad to begin with; I think they were just preparing us for the worst. But really, it’s been all good news since then.” Speer (17-6) returned to the ghting cage, May 12, to take on fellow UFC veteran Kevin Burns (105). Speer scored a huge victory in the match up with a split-decision victory. After some recovery time, Speer said he hopes to be back in the cage again soon. Kolb family loses a loved one John Kolb, (72) passed away May 6 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. He also received a plaque and was recognized by Who’s Who Among American Farmers. He served on the Munson Township Planning Board until he retired because of poor health. Tractors & Loader NOTE: This is a very good herd of well uddered dairy cattle. According to records of milk sold, the herd average is approx. 18,000 pounds with an excellent 3.9% fat and 3.01 protein. 60 pound tank average. No TMR, no BST. SCC on a per cow basis runs from 40 to 150,000. Individual butterfat, protein and SCC will be available sale day. The herd consists primarily of first and second lactation cows. Recent Triangle 9 boosters, along with the conventional Holsteins, we offer a nice group of hard to find Red & White Holsteins, Jersey, Brown Swiss and Guernsey cows. Several cows are recently fresh or bred back for fall calving. All bred females carry the service of a registered Boliver son from the Spring Prairie Colony. All cows are milked in a flat parlor and housed in loose housing, making them easily adaptable to any facility. Along with a very well uddered set of cows, we offer a nice group of bred and open heifers.
