Prepare for spring with crop scouting, forage inoculants Lang, Ramirez update farmers on practices By Sherry Newell Contributing Writer
HOLY CROSS, Iowa – In the dead of winter, dairy farmers attending the Iowa State University Dairy Days were encouraged to turn their attention to spring. The ISU Dairy Days are a series of sessions held in six locations in late January and early February. This year’s theme was “Brining Proďƒžts to Life,â€? and the sessions included a presentation on crop scouting for corn and alfalfa, as well as additional topics. According to Brian Lang, Iowa State University Extension ďƒželd agronomist, who spoke at the session in Holy Cross, Iowa’s wet fall makes it hard to predict how alfalfa overwintered in 2018-19. “Alfalfa does not harden down as well into the winter with a wet fall compared to normal fall soil moisture conditions,â€? Lang said. “Normally alfalfa crowns will tolerate winter soil temperatures of 5 to 15 degrees, but with a wet fall, maybe that becomes 10
to 20 degrees, and some weather stations have shown soil temperature readings down to 20 degrees during the late January cold spell.â€? But, Lang said it is not easily predictable, since another dozen factors can impact overwintering, including alfalfa’s intolerance to the saturated soils that also occurred in fall 2018 and winter in low spots and hillside seepage areas of ďƒželds. Participants in Holy Cross received handouts on crop scouting for alfalfa and corn production, and discussed some of the more critical periods for scouting. “V3 stage corn is an excellent time for stand counts,â€? Lang said. “Checking population, uniformity of stand and plant emergence; did you get the stand intended? If not, why not?â€? Lang suggested farmers investigate both above and below the ground for planting depth, disease, insects, compaction and other indicators. “At V3 stage, evidence of problems should still be present, whereas at a later stage early signs of why may no longer exist,â€? he said. Many aspects of alfalfa management
and scouting were part of Lang’s presentation, including the most common insect pest, potato leafhopper. “We do a good job of watching for this pest in established alfalfa stands,â€? Lang said. “But, we often forget to scout new seedings under the oat nurse crop. Do this by boot stage, since once oats head-out we lose some insecticide options in oat-alfalfa ďƒželds.â€? Lang provided a website for producers to track growing degree days, http:// www.mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/plotting/ auto/?q=108. Dr. Hugo Ramirez, ISU Extension dairy nutritionist, took participants further into the growing season with a discussion of silage inoculants, walking through the chemistry that determines the quality of feed given to the cattle at the end of the process. Ramirez said inoculants speed up fermentation and can increase dry matter recovery by 2-3 percent. “Inoculants are insurance,â€? Ramirez said. “They don’t improve [silage], they maintain it.â€?
He asked farmers to consider expense versus investment, risk management versus luck, and nutritional quality and cost versus return on investment. But, he also identiďƒžed how management of inoculants throughout the process can reduce effectiveness. For example, Ramirez said he has seen the inoculant stored or applied in temperatures that weaken, or even kill, the bacteria. He also sees losses when silages are removed to a different pile or when dry silages are not packed well. Ramirez recommended testing silage moisture at least once a week and said some farmers test every other day. He said silage might appear normal, but rising temperatures inside the pack can affect dry matter and nutritional quality. “We need to be keeping track of the numbers: what went in versus what is going out [to the cows],â€? Ramirez said. “Post-harvest management can make or break milk production. If we’re not taking that into account, we’re feeding something different than what the nutritionist recommended.â€?
Timms, Bentley aim focus at calves, replacements By Sherry Newell Contributing Writer
HOLY CROSS, Iowa – Three-quarters of the dairy farmers who attended the Iowa State University Dairy Days session said they have more replacement heifers than they need. Their response was part of a set of questions asked by Dr. Leo Timms, ISU Dairy Specialist and Associate Professor, at the Feb. 6 session held in Holy Cross, Iowa. The ISU Dairy Days are held in six locations in late January and early February. This year’s theme was “Bringing Proďƒžts to Life.â€? The sessions included presentations on silage inoculants, crop scouting for corn and alfalfa, and an update on robotic milking systems. “We all have replacements and nowhere to go with them,â€? Timms said. “If I’d asked you that question ďƒžve or 10 years ago, none of you would have raised your hands.â€? According to Timms, many people believe sexed semen has led to too many heifers, but he said it is only a part of the issue. More importantly, dairy farmers are doing a better job with cows and calves. Using national averages of calving heifers at 25.5 months, a cull rate of 35 percent, and a mortality and cull heifer rate of 10 percent, Timms estimated 74 replacements are available over two years in a 100-cow herd. He offered a free phone application, Preg Calculator, to help determine an individual herd’s replacement requirements. Timms’ calculations show the cost to get a heifer to ďƒžrst freshening in 1999 was $1,360 and rose to $2,510 in 2015, justifying his determination that the cost associated with replacements is second only to feed cost. While half of raising a replacement heifer is likely feed, Timms said it is important to consider items like fuel, electricity, supplies, equipment, manure storage and labor.

Complicating matters, Timms said salvage value of a heifer has continued to fall. He cautioned his audience not to rely on heifer prices going back up in a milk price recovery. “It’s not like other years,â€? Timms said. “Now we have more than we need.â€? Timms offered perspectives to consider when evaluating the economics of replacements. Among them was the use of beef bulls, a practice which about half the partici-
pants said they have adopted. But, according to Timms, more information would help dairy farmers make better use of that strategy. “Do we know when we should market those beef crosses to optimize their value?â€? Timms said. “And, what are the best crosses for quality and dollars? Nobody’s really looked at that.â€? Timms also identiďƒžed genomic testing as a way to maximize the value of replacements. “If we don’t get the right calf on the ground, is it really worth raising her?â€? he said. Jenn Bentley, ISU Extension dairy specialist, also presented at the Feb. 6 Dairy Days session. Bentley offered recommendations on calf feeding equipment protocols. She laid out possibilities for more efďƒžcient calf kitchens including facilities and supplies for calf feeding and offered a ďƒ&#x;ash drive loaded with videos on the cleaning protocol, in both English and Spanish. Participants in the meeting also tried out several tools Bentley suggested for monitoring cleanliness, including an ATP meter or luminometer. ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate and it will be present if live bacteria exist on a surface such as the lids of colostrum buckets or edges of an esophageal tube feeder. While a meter may cost $1,000, ATP swabs or protein residue swabs may accomplish the same thing with a much lower cost, as little as $2-$3 per swab. Bentley shared examples of results from ATP meter measurements on transfer hoses for waste milk, bottle nipples and other sources, all of which are hard to clean. She also recommended reviewing milk replacer storage, pointing out that bacterial contamination can occur on bags, especially during humid conditions. A plastic barrel with a lining might pose an easy solution.

The Farmers Fair is designed to provide a lively, and interactive learning opportunity. There will be a Grandstand, where a variety of presenters will share their knowledge and expertise, a Midway full of vendors offering the most recent information on products and services, and room to socialize. Topics will consist of: how to seek approval for tiling and ditching, climate condition trends and outlook, tiling and ditching with water resources in mind, Discovery Farm and tile monitoring results, the importance of organic matter and if cover crops can reduce nitrate leaching. Also hear from local farmers regarding their personal experiences, trials and tribulations when it comes to conservation minded farming. The Farmers Fair is $10 per person for those that preregister (Registration at the door will be $30 per person). The Pre-Registration deadline is Monday, Feb. 25. For your convenience, there are three ways to register: 1) Register and pay online at www.stearnscountyswcd.net; 2) Mail a check with names of attendees and contact information to the Stearns County SWCD at 110 2nd Street South, Suite 128 Waite Park, MN 56387; 3) Stop in our ofce MondayFriday from 8-4:30 PM. The registration fee includes an excellent hot lunch provided to you by Roadside Tavern, morning and afternoon refreshments. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host Boots in the Barn, a program for women beef and dairy producers, in March in the Waukon area. Boots in the Barn is a three-part series for women involved in their dairy or beef cattle operation. The course will be held March 7, 14 and 21. The March 7 session will feature Denise Schwab, beef specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, who will provide information on understanding expected progeny differences (EPD), sire catalogs and how that relates to sire selection for dairy and beef producers. A panel of experts will provide information on how to apply this information to an operation, specically addressing dairy and beef crossbreeding programs. The session will be held at the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Waukon from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The March 14 session will feature Dr. Caitlin Wiley, DVM, and clinical assistant professor at Iowa State. Wiley will share tips and tricks to help ease calving season and difcult calvings. She will use “Frosty,” the life-size cow
model, to demonstrate techniques to simplify pulling malpresentations to result in more live calves. This session will be held at the Waukon Veterinary Clinic in Waukon from 1-3 p.m. The March 21 session will focus on vaccine handling and management. Dr. Ryan Hammel, DVM, from the Waukon Veterinary Clinic and Dr. Brent Meyer, technical services veterinarian for Merck Animal Health, will discuss vaccine management including handling in the heat of the summer and cold of winter, reading labels and keeping records to align with the Beef Quality Assurance program. Those interested in the program can register online. The fee for this program is $5 per session or $15 for all three. The program is also sponsored by a Professional Dairy Producers Foundation educational grant. The Boots in the Barn program was created after ISU Extension and Outreach staff in Allamakee, Fayette and Winneshiek counties identied the need for additional ag programs for women. These three counties all have strong dairy and beef operations with 25 percent of Iowa’s dairy herds and 25 percent of the state’s beef cow herds. Dairy and beef production has a lot in common, such as reproduction and cattle health. The 38th annual New Ulm Farm-City Hub Club Farm Show will be held Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9, at the Civic Center on the fairgrounds in New Ulm. Friday’s hours are 1 to 8 p.m.; Saturday’s hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Hub Club show is the largest indoor farm show in south central Minnesota. It transforms the New Ulm Civic Center into a showcase for ag-related products and services. The exhibition area contains over 20,000 square feet of display space that promotes all facets of the agricultural industry. This year’s show will have two very special presentations. Past, present, and future farmers will want to hear “Machinery Pete” when he presents the 3 and 6:30 p.m. seminars on Friday, March 8.
Greg Peterson, known to farmers as “Machinery Pete”, has researched and tracked machinery auction prices across North America since 1989. His auction pricing database is the most comprehensive and complete of its kind. In his light-hearted presentation, Peterson will share stories of his travels in the machinery and auction business. Kids and their parents will want to be at the show at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 9 when the 65th Princess Kay of the Milky Way, Rebekka Paskewitz of Browerville, will sit down with youngsters for story time, reading books about dairy farming and how farmers care for their cows. Princess Kay will also visit with kids at the Farm Show Ofce booth afterwards. All together, the show will feature eight seminars on a variety of topics, four each day. What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? FFA and 4-H. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? I enjoy learning about agriculture. It is a good way to meet new people, and these organizations provide countless amounts of opportunities. 4-H is my favorite, because it has helped me nd myself and has taught me many life lessons. I have met some of my best friends through 4-H. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Serving as a Minnesota 4-H State Ambassador. It’s amazing being able to lead and plan various events that I attended when I was younger. Past state ambassadors have made an impact on my life, and I am so grateful I get the chance to impact today’s youth. What’s your favorite social media? I don’t have a favorite social media, but it is nice to have because it is a good way to keep up with friends. What are your career aspirations? I would like to have a career that is involved in agriculture and 4-H.

Who do you look up to? I don’t look up to one specic person. There have been lots of people in my life that have impacted me for the better, and I aspire to be like them everyday because it only takes one person to change someone’s life.

Destry and backed by an excellent granddam with over 185,000 milk lifetime. (pictured below) Bonsai, Top heifer, genetically in the herd. She is a P9 heifer with a PTPI of +2513. Sired by JoSuper with over +3200 lbs. milk. On the maternal side, she is out of a KingBoy dam with an 87 Pt. Redburst granddam. Minkota Monterey Bluebird is extremely wide-rumped with a great udder, and is destined for VG on her first classification.
Minkota Pepper Idaho is one of our sweetest uddered young cows and will easily score VG on her next classification.
