On-farm practices affects beef quality BQA program focuses on best management for healthy, wholesome meat By Krista Kuzma

ALTURA, Minn. – Because they are dairy producers, the Greden family knows they are also beef producers. “Naturally our cull animals are turned into beef just like the Angus-bred [and other breeds of] beef animals. We’re already producing beef so we might as well use the same set of protocols,” Ross Greden said. The protocols Greden is referring to are a part of the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program, which he follows on his 550-cow dairy he owns with his brother, Brent, and their dad, Larry, and their families near Altura, Minn. “The BQA program is the gold standard of best management practices for producing safe, healthy, wholesome beef,” said Ashley Kohls, BQA coordinator with the Minnesota Beef Council. Every ve years, a National Beef Quality Audit is conducted,

There are two areas to the audit: feeder cattle and market cows and bulls. On the feeder cattle side, Kohls said 20 percent of animals in the most recent audit
were dairy inuenced beef – animals that had hides that looked like Holsteins. That is a 5.5 percent increase from the 2011 audit. “That is the highest it has ever been,” Kohls said. In the market cow and bull side of the audit, ndings show
that the number of lame dairy cows decreased by 24.6 percent and the number of dairy cows with a body condition score over 3 went up 9 percent since 2007. Along with the audit, additional research was conducted to determine the presence of in-
jection-site lesions. It found that the frequency of injection-site lesions decreased 20 percent in dairy-type carcasses since 2000. The Market Cow and Bull Executive Summary highlighted a few of these improvements. “Signicant improvements have been made in the cow and bull quality – especially on the dairy side. The National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) program, … has raised the quality bar for the entire dairy industry, creating a culture of continuous improvement,” the summary read. If a dairy producer sells his or her milk to a dairy processor that is a part of the National Dairy FARM Program, the dairy has taken BQA as a part of their FARM certication. As a member-owner of Associated Milk Producers, Inc. (AMPI), the Gredens went through the training a few years ago and will need to be recertied as long as they sell milk to a processor as a part of the FARM program. “BQA is complimentary to their (FARM) training,” Greden said. Ross Greden sorts a cow in his family’s freestall barn using Ɵps he learned from Beef Quality Assurance training. thing I mention is that the dairy cows in the barn have two careers,” she said. “It’s always a plea to have them treat this milk cow like she’s going to be a beef cow in the future.” Kohls mentioned the eight areas of focus in the BQA program – animal care, handling and transportation; early marketing to avoid lame or disabled cattle; management of feed, feed additives and medication; management of animal health products to prevent residues; prevention of injection site lesions and abscesses; maximizing carcass value; biosecurity or animal identication; and record keeping.

Two areas Kohls stresses the most when talking about BQA are managing animal health products to prevent residues and preventing abscesses and lesions at the injection site. “Those are the two beginning points to the BQA program,” Kohls said. “The whole reason the BQA program started in the rst place is because we had issues with residues from antibiotics in beef.” There has been signicant improvement in that area, but Kohls said there could be more. “USDA comes out every week with violators – people who marketed an animal that had a residue. If you look at that list, 99 percent of them are always dairy breed animals. So I always have to remind folks; this cow is also going to be a beef cow,” Kohls said. Dairy farmers also need to remember this when marketing young calves, Kohls said. “A high percentage of animals on that list are baby calves – the calves marketed through a sale barn or to somebody else that end up in the veal supply. The dairy farmer may not realize that’s where that calf is going, but you still need to have that mentality that it could potentially be bought for veal,” Kohls said. Because of this, record keeping has becoming increasingly important. “Make sure you don’t treat the calf
with an antibiotic unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you do, don’t let that calf leave your yard until it’s past the withdrawal time,” Kohls said. There has also been signicant improvement in injection sites, Kohls said. “It is becoming standard to move the injection site from the rear end of the animal up to neck of the animal,” Kohls said. “In the dairy industry, they’ll argue they only ever see the back end of the animal so we’re trying to understand ways of getting access to the front of the animal when they’re installing new parlors … If you have to give it in the back make sure you are giving it in an area where you’re not going to impact the high cut of beef, so making sure you focus on areas around the tailhead.” This is an area where the Gredens have made improvements. “To a large degree, we were onboard [with the BQA injection sites], but now we are 100 percent,” Greden said. “We won’t touch the rear quarters at all any more for any reason. We will work with that animal and try to get her calmed down rather than give her a shot in the rear quarter. We’ll work with her longer and wait. We’re more patient now.” Going through the BQA program also gave them more condence when giving necessary treatment in the front. “BQA gave evidence we could use a little bigger area on the shoulder than what we were using so it expanded our front area …,” Greden said. Gredens also learned a lot about cow handling from BQA training. “It helped teach us how to keep the animal more calm during transportation – and not just loading up and hauling to town, but moving from pen A to pen B,” Greden said. “We learned the average cow speed is less than the average human speed so immediately we’re in conict with the animal. Recognize you’re in two different places and to respect their physiological make up – their gait is to move slow. We have to educate ourselves to not become too impatient.” The Gredens learned to zigzag while walking behind cows in order to stay in their line of site, how to move them calmly through a narrow pen, how to sort one cow out of a group, how to use visual ags and ways to use a cadence in a person’s voice to speak to an animal. “We’re more aware that we should be taking longer and investing more time to get that animal less excited and more comfortable to receive the vaccine, get moved or whatever we have to do,” Greden said. Most of all, through the BQA program, the Gredens are constantly reminded they are beef producers even though they have dairy cows.

Dairy products help reduce inammation More studies needed, says UW-Madison’s Bradley Bolling By Ron Johnson

MADISON, Wis. – Drinking milk and eating yogurt, cheese, butter and other dairy products might do more than provide vitamins and nutrients. Some dairy foods are thought to boost people’s immune systems by ghting inammation. B r a d l e y Bolling, an assistant professor in the University of WisconsinM a d i s o n Food Science Department, talked about that possibility Oct. 4 Bradley Bolling during the seminar UW-Madison “Making sense of dairy and anti-inammation: Yogurt, obesity and A2 milk” at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. Bolling’s research is focused on food chemistry and nutrition. In addition, he leads research on dietary components that can lower the risk of chronic diseases. He particularly focuses on antioxidants and antiinammatory efforts. In the presentation, he discussed a possible link between yogurt, gut health and why gut health is important. He also outlined the link between inammation and chronic diseases, along with claims of how A1 and A2 milk can improve health. Bolling said the makeup of milk, and its processing, might inuence dairy products’ ability to lessen inammation. He said A2 milk is gaining popularity because of its purported health benets. This A2 milk is different from
regular A1 milk because it does not contain the same beta-casein proteins. Cows that produce only the A2 variation of the protein are the source of A2 milk. Bolling said it is difcult for lactose-intolerant people to digest A1 milk. Yet they seem to handle A2 milk quite well. A2 milk, he said, has been sold in Australia for more than a decade. It was introduced in the United States in 2015 by the A2 Milk Company, and now the product is available in many grocery stores. Some dairy farmers, Bolling said, are breeding their cattle so they produce A2 milk. Turning to inammation, Bolling said it is not always a bad thing. It is needed for the immune system to work properly. Inammation is a defense against disease-causing pathogens, and it helps the body heal. “The immune system is very important for the normal functioning of the body, and inammation is part of that,” Bolling said. It is a complicated system, he said, since many cells, chemicals and proteins are involved. An important site of immune function is the gut, or intestines, Bolling said. Microbes in the gut play a role in ghting inammation. But the gut is also where components that produce inammation originate. While a little inammation can be benecial, chronic inammation is bad. “This is really where the antiinammatory effects of food lie,” Bolling said. Low levels of inammation that persist have been linked to chronic diseases. Bolling said these include Alzheimer’s, arthritis, cancer,
cardiovascular troubles, diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Chronic diseases with inammation as a component are not uncommon. The food scientist said more than half the people in the U.S. are aficted. Treating these diseases is not cheap. “It’s approaching 90 percent of health care costs,” Bolling said. Many books have been written about the subject. “This is an area where people have made a lot of claims about foods – vegetables, dairy products and seafood,” Bolling said. “There’s been a lot of interest in how food or dietary patterns can prevent chronic inammation.” Researchers have surveyed thousands of people about their health and diets. They have found that eating certain ways might be associated with less inammation. Dairy product

consumption might also be associated with less inammation. Bolling went on to talk about the health claims that are made on food, vitamin and supplement labels. These claims are subject to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations. “Structure-function claims do not need federal approval. But such a claim might have one or two human intervention studies to support it,” Bolling said. Such a claim can be on the order of, “The consumption of calcium helps
build strong bones,” Bolling said. The second kind of statement that might be on a label is a drug claim. Bolling said this claim might be that a food helps ght inammation or is anti-inammatory. Health claims need FDA approval before they can be used on labels. These claims also need to have scientic agreement or consensus behind them. What do the studies say about inammation? Bolling said more than 25 studies worldwide have looked for a link between dairy product consumption and inammation. The answers are mixed. Bolling said some studies suggest that, yes, dairy products do have an antiinammatory effect. But others suggest that eating and drinking dairy products might actually create inammation. Dairy products’ anti-inammatory effect, he said, has been most consistent in people who have metabolic disorders. Obesity is included here. “Fermented dairy has been particularly consistent in having antiinammatory effects,” Bolling said. Fermented dairy products include yogurt, cheese, sour cream and ker. Bolling was asked what science can say for sure about the benets of drinking A2 milk and eating yogurt. “I think no [health] claims have reached that [scientic] consensus,” Bolling said. On eating yogurt, Bolling said, “The consensus is that three cups of dairy per 2,000 kilo calories is part of a healthy lifestyle.” To try to get solid answers, more studies are needed, said the food scientist. “Fermented foods are really an interesting topic, because you can have multiple microbes producing different types of products [in the gut]. You may have probiotical microorganisms. This eld is always changing. A large, clinical trial could move things in either direction. This is really an emerging area. To get to that consensus, we need more human intervention studies.”

Dolores Buck, 84, passes Dolores G. Buck, age 84, retired dairy farmer of Goodhue, died unexpectedly, but peacefully, at home. She joined her beloved husband in heaven on their wedding anniversary, Sept. 23. Dolores Genevieve was born on March 30, 1933, in Mazeppa, the daughter of Peter and Theresa (Tri) Perrotti. She grew up in Mazeppa, graduating as salutatorian from Mazeppa High School in 1951. She was employed at First National Bank, Rochester, and later Peoples State Bank, Mazeppa, until marrying Arville A. Buck on Sept. 23, 1953. They farmed together in Goodhue Township until his death on Dec. 2, 1975. Dolores continued dairy farming until her retirement. After 62 years on the farm, she moved to Goodhue one month ago. Dolores was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Goodhue, where she had served on the church council, was a preschool teacher and helped decorate for the seasons. She was a past leader
of the Goodhue Gesundheits 4-H Club. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Belle Creek Homemakers, and of the Goodhue Lioness Club. She volunteered her time with various community events over the years. Dolores enjoyed music and was involved with the Vocalaires and No-Notes and enjoyed entertaining as a clown for many years. Dolores was an avid gardener, lefse, gritwurst and blackberry jelly maker. She canned and made many loaves of bread and other goodies. She loved her family and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as “Grandma Buckets.” She is survived by her children, Teresa Buck, of Pine Island, David (Ann) Buck, of Goodhue, Diane Buck, of Boyceville, Wis., Dennis (Ruth) Buck, of Goodhue, Mary (Curtis) Oeltjenbruns, of West Concord, and Lori (Mike) Boesl, of Boyceville; 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; sister, Mary (Bob) Heppelmann, of Bellechester; brother-in-law, Marlyn Lexvold, of Aurora, Colo.; sister-in-law, Sue Perrotti, of Lake City; and many nieces and nephews.

Jergenson travels to Tanzania to share skills with local farmers Tim Jergenson, UW-Extension Agricultural Agent for Barron County travelled to Tanzania for two weeks to share his technical skills and expertise with local farmers. Tim’s assignment is part of Catholic Relief Services’ Farmer-to-Farmer (FTF) program that promotes economic growth, food security, and agricultural development in East Africa. Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the ve-year program matches the technical assistance of U.S. farmers, agribusinesses, cooperatives, and universities to help farmers in developing countries improve agricultural productivity, access new markets, and increase their incomes. While in Tanzania, Tim worked with CARITIS in training and giving technical assistance to Extension Field Staff, Extension Supervisors and Farm Community Volunteers to enable them to conduct better meetings and involve all of their farmer members. In addition, to create meeting environments that provide better educational experiences, increase the active membership in the organization, and to become stron-

MADISON, Wis. – With one of the busiest periods of the growing season fast approaching or already underway in the Upper Midwest, it becomes too easy to take shortcuts while operating machinery. All too often, those shortcuts can lead to an injury – or worse. “Among all on-farm fatalities, tractor fatalities are generally the highest cause. It depends on the state, but generally about 40 percent to half the fatalities, and the single largest cause of death from tractors, are still rollovers and overturns,” said Dr. John Shutske, professor of biological systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
and farm safety specialist with UWExtension. “Another 20 to 30 percent are from other types of machinery, such as entanglements and being pinned or crushed. Roadway crashes are also important and not uncommon. Right now is a dangerous time, especially early mornings and evenings – low light, hard to see, glare and lots going on.” Shutske has been focusing his work on farm safety for over two decades and referred to a study he did in the 1990s. “On injuries … we did a comprehensive ag injury study among more than 13,000 people in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin on almost 4,000 different farms. We found that about one in ve farms, or 19.5 percent, had a work-related injury each year,” Shutske said. “These included any reported injury on the farm where a person experienced a restriction of normal activities for at least four hours; and/or loss of consciousness, loss of awareness or amnesia for any length of time; and/ or the use of professional medical care. In a state like Wisconsin, that would be something on the order of 19.5 percent of 69,000 farms or about 13,000-13,500 injuries.” However, he reiterated that not much has changed since the ‘90s. “We do have fairly robust and consistent data on fatalities on farms over that time, and the fatality rate has not changed much at all since the late 1990s. We did see some improvements in death rates from farm work from 1985 to mid-1990s, but death rates have plateaued,” Shutske said. “So, there is no reason, therefore, to assume that the non-fatal incidents have decreased signicantly. It’s pretty safe to say that we have 10,000 to 13,000 non-fatal injuries in Wisconsin each year.” The most common hazards associated with operating machinery include entanglements, amputations, being crushed and eye injuries from ying parts, according to Shutske. “Hitching is a particularly high-risk activity,” Shutske said. Shutske alluded that many farmers think they can work around potentially deadly hazards. “Individual farmers working with the same piece of equipment or structure … sometimes begin to take a given hazard for granted. They might

People often have some intent and knowledge to do the right thing; almost all of us do,” Shutske said. “But, they use the machine or work around another type of hazard
and they are able to get the job done.” The lack of anything bad happening reinforces the behavior, according to Shutske, and stressed nances certainly do not help. “Furthermore, it takes time to correct hazards. … And then, there’s money,” Shutske said. “I used to work in insurance, and when I’d go out and visit a site where there had been a serious injury or death, or even
a big re, it was often a farm where the operator knew some changes were needed, but other production needs were also critical. The hard thing about working in insurance is that you can also see into the future to some extent – a farm where people are struggling day-to-day with massive time pressures, stretched nancially and keeping things patched together waiting for better times. These were often farms where we’d
see greater losses.” In addition to taking proper care of machinery and making enough time to operate equipment safely, written protocols for machinery operators can also reduce the likelihood of a work-related accident on your farm this harvest season, and planning for a worst-case scenario; no matter how difcult it may be. “Your plan should include solutions for hazards as well as a timetable, and should be revisited at least annually, if not more,” Shutske said. “It must also include documentation and a process connected to unexpected events, such as emergency contact information, training and education on rst aid and response, key partners for emergency events, including people and animal health, and plans for business continuity, like securing critical information and data.” Even though a farm accident may be hard to plan for, safety should always come rst at one of the most dangerous times of the year for farmers. “The National Safety Council has tracked fatalities for the longest time of any group, and in their 2017 injury facts report, they reported 548 ag work-related deaths in 2015, which is a fatality rate of 22.6 per 100,000 people working,” Shutske said. “This is seven times higher than all other industries combined, and very sad for farmers.”

Farm equipment safety is paramount during harvest season By Emily Wilmes, University of Minnesota Extension Tractors and large eld equipment are the most common causes of farm accidents, injuries, and deaths. They are a necessary part of farm work, but exercising caution when using them is crucial in preventing accidents. I am passionate about all areas of farm safety, but especially equipment safety. It’s very personal for me, as my dad lost his leg in a farming accident involving equipment when he was only 18. I don’t want any farmer to go through what my dad went through, so pay attention to safety. First and foremost, the safety manual. Also, pay attention to any safety or warning decals on the equipment. Before operation, be sure to inspect the equipment for any safety hazards. During inspection, also identify all safety hazards including: moving parts, pinch points, crush points, pull-in areas, and free-wheeling areas. Be sure anyone who is going to be using the equipment is aware of these areas as well. While using the equipment, keep bystanders, especially children, away from the equipment operation area. Before approaching equipment for an inspection or repair, shut it down, turn off the engine, remove the key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. This is only time you should be removing any safety devices, such as shields from the equipment. When any work you were doing is completed, safety devices should be put back on before equipment operation resumes. In addition, be mindful when using public roadways. Use lights and ashers to ensure you are easy for drivers to see and have a slow-moving emblem on your tractor and equipment. It is Minnesota law for all vehicles travelling under 30 miles per hour on public roadways. You may also consider using a following vehicle when moving large pieces of equipment, especially at night. Proper safety precautions on the roads keep not only you, but the other people using the road, safe. We cannot control how other drivers may react to farm equipment being on the road, but it is vital that farmers are doing whatever they can to keep everyone safe. Farm equipment is a dangerous part of farming, but following safety guidelines, keeping others away from the operation area, and using public roads in a safe manner will keep us all out of harm’s way. Farm and Rural Helpline answers the call for mental health Free, condential service now available in Minnesota A new Farm & Rural Helpline is now available to Minnesota farmers and rural residents. The service, funded by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), is free, condential, and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The toll free number is (833) 6002670. Farmers and rural communities face unique stresses and emotional situations, including nancial challenges, unpredictable weather, physically demanding work, and more. As stress, anxiety, depression, nancial burdens, and other mental and emotional issues continue to impact the lives of farmers and rural Minnesotans, the MDA recognized the need for ongoing support. “I farmed for 24 years, so I’m no stranger to the stress and worry that can be part of farming,” said MDA Commissioner Dave Frederickson. “I know that sometimes it helps to talk to someone about problems that can seem insurmountable. There is always help available around the corner.” As an active farmer during the economic crisis of the 1980s, Commissioner Frederickson experienced rst-hand the emotional toll farming can take on individuals and families. He also knows that resources are available in Minnesota to families navigating the unique challenges facing farmers on a daily basis. The Farm & Rural Helpline can connect callers to nancial assistance programs, health and mental health services, legal help, and more. Calls are condential, but counselors may ask for a rst name and phone number in case of a dropped call. Translation services are also available, with translators available in all languages. State grants fund on-farm livestock improvements $2 million available for construction, physical improvements Livestock producers may apply for a portion of $1.9 million in Livestock Investment Grants. Funds are provided by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) Agricultural Growth, Research and Innovation (AGRI) Program and may be used for on-farm improvements. “Livestock Investment Grants help farmers stay competitive and reinvest in their industry,” said MDA Commissioner Dave Frederickson. “Last year, 105 livestock farmers received grants to improve their operations.” With Livestock Investment funds awarded during the 2017 scal year, Jordan Daugherty of Raymond purchased feeding and fencing equipment, which will enable him to raise more sheep. In Hartland, Brady Jensen used grant funds to construct a 2,400 head swine facility to increase protability and allow a young farmer to start farming full time. Joseph Hemmesch of Paynesville used the grant funds to update a manure pit and feeding equipment and add more stalls to his barn. These improvements will help grow his dairy herd and protect the environment. Qualifying producers are

Qualifying expenditures include the purchase, construction or improvement of livestock buildings or facilities. Fencing, feeding and waste management equipment are also eligible. Producers who suffered a loss due to natural disaster may also apply. The grant will not pay for livestock, land purchases or debt renancing. Projects must begin after January 1, 2018. Past applicants who did not receive an award must reapply for the 2018 program. Applications for beginning farmers, farmers transitioning into livestock, and those with a positive environmental impact receive priority. Details and grant guidelines are

(Click here to read the study.) This microbial diversity
is believed to protect farmers against allergic and autoimmune diseases. The nasal microbiota of dairy farmers had 2.15 fold more organisms when compared to nasal sample of non-farmers. Similarly, the oral samples from the dairy farmers group harbored 1.5 fold more organisms, said lead author Sanjay Shukla, Ph.D. Additionally, the farmer group had lower relative abundance amounts of Staphylococcus spp, some of which are known opportunistic pathogens. The study was conducted in central Wisconsin. Samples were collected from the noses and mouths of the research participants: 21 dairy farmers and 18 non-farmers working ofcebased jobs. Within a few years, we’re covered in thousands of different species of microbes. Our microbes may vary with gender, diet, climate, age, occupation, and hygiene. Dr. Shukla is excited about research possibilities. “We still do not know much about the microbial occupational exposure of farmers and this study provides some basic understanding of dairy farmers’ microbiome,” Shukla said. “But we need to do functional studies on repeated sampling on a larger cohort to understand the microbiome’s contribution to farmer’s overall health and disease.” This study is providing a foundation for research into the farm-as-medicine concept, which examines both environmental risks and the health-building aspects of farm life. “This is a signicant collaboration between the National Farm Medicine Center and the Center for Human Genetics,” said project co-investigator, Casper “Cap” Bendixsen, Ph.D. “It explores the boundaries of what we consider ‘farm health,’ giving us a more complex, truer picture of how farm environments can be both hazardous and health-promoting.” Future studies will be performed to analyze the relationships among the nasal and oral microbiomes of dairy farmers and non-dairy farmers with respect to the number and type of adverse health outcomes. Assuming enhanced microbial diversity is an indicator of overall good health, dairy farmers should have better health outcomes than non-dairy farmers and other professions, depending upon individual genetics and life-style choices. Funding for the study was provided by Marsheld Clinic Research Institute and by donations made to the institute.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in FFA and 4-H. I judge dairy cattle for both organizations, and I show dairy cattle for 4-H. I also am a Meeker County Dairy Ambassador, and will be running for dairy princess this spring. I also was a part of the Meeker County dairy bowl team, and two years ago we made it to nationals where we placed second. I am a member of the Minnesota Junior Holstein Association as well. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I have always had a fascination with dairy cattle. Growing up, my parents searched out opportunities for me to become more involved within the dairy community. I love the relationships that I have built with peers and professionals. My favorite organization is the dairy ambassador/princess program. I love being around young women who are as passionate about dairy cattle as I am. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Succeeding and seeing all of my hard work pay off. Whether it is doing better than the year before in my dairy ambassador interviews or placing in the dairy showcase at the state fair with my own heifer, seeing everything I’ve worked for come together is my favorite part of it all. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? The best lessons come from not succeeding. As fun as it is to do well, you have to know how to handle being unsuccessful. I think that is an important life lesson that I will use in the future. Who do you look up to? My parents. My mom is a good role model to have and she always pushes me to do my best. I admire my dad’s work ethic and his love for farming. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I am deathly afraid of any type of bird, and I hate bananas. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I milk cows on our 220-cow dairy farm. I help with eld work during the summer and in the fall when I can. I also am in charge of feeding heifers whenever my dad can’t. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would make my sister learn how to drive tractor and feed corn silage so I don’t always have to be the go-to for Dad. And, I will change it by nagging my dad. It’s been three years, and it still hasn’t changed, but maybe if I keep nagging it will.

Those attending will get a rsthand look at one of the world’s leading dairy science departments as they tour the UW-Madison campus and Dairy Cattle Center, meet faculty, participate in handson workshops and learn about the wide variety of learning opportunities available to dairy science majors. The UW-Madison undergrad dairy science program emphasizes a combination of cutting-edge, science-based knowledge and hands-on experience. Compensation will be dependent on experience and qualification. The responsibilities of an FMS Specialist include assisting our customers in maximizing the performance of their dairy operations, using automated technologies combined with sound dairy management practices. To accomplish this, we use a combination of equipment training, software training, defining best practices, monitoring progress and bringing specialists to the farm, as needed, to address issues and achieve performance goals. Dairy management knowledge and experience in handling livestock is a necessity. Previous experience with herd management software systems, such as T4C, Dairy Plan, and Dairy Comp is not required, but is helpful. A qualified candidate for this position must have experience with analyzing data and must have excellent communication skills—both written and verbal.
