From parlor to pounding pavement Sieracki’s running career takes off with dairying mentality By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com

MINNEAPOLIS – Whether in the barn or on the track, Breanna (Colbenson) Sieracki knows the importance of setting goals and nding a way to achieve them. As a member of Team USA, Sieracki placed rst in the women’s 10K competition during the North America Central American Caribbean Cross Country Championships Feb. 16 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

“Just like in farming, I know there’s no cutting corners to get where you want,” said Sieracki, who is a professional runner with Team USA Minnesota, based in Minneapolis. The 23-year-old grew up on her parents’, Tim and Shirley Colbenson’s, dairy farm in Pierce County near Spring Valley, Wis. Sieracki’s recent accomplishment came after qualifying for the meet at the USA Track and Field Cross Country National Championships Feb.

2 in Tallahassee, Fla. As the fth of six women representing Team USA at the NACAC meet, Sieracki was driven as always, but winning the race was not a feat she was striving for when she arrived in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. However, Sieracki’s sights quickly changed as the meet was underway. At 6K of the 10K race, Sieracki realized taking a gold for Team USA was in reach. She pushed through the remaining distance and nished rst with a time of 36 minutes, 34 seconds, 3 seconds ahead of the second-place nisher from Canada. “I never thought winning was a possibility. It was a remarkable feeling, and I don’t think a child at Christmas could be more excited,” said Sieracki, still in awe of her triumph. “It’s always been a goal of mine to wear USA across my chest and hold up the American ag. … I didn’t expect to reach that so soon.” Sieracki’s running career began as a seventh grader on her school’s cross-country team. “My brothers would say I started running because I was Turn to SIERACKI | Page 3

At the second day of practice, Sieracki competed in her rst middle school meet. She won the race, igniting a re for the sport. In high school, Sieracki earned herself many accolades that led her to signing with the University of MinnesotaDuluth. Once in college, she became an eight-time all-American, specializing in steeplechase, 5K, distance medley relay and cross-country. She was also acknowledged as both the college’s female senior athlete and the NCAA Division II Central Region Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. “Now, I have the support of people from across the state and across the country to be a professional runner,” Sieracki said. “I’m in awe. When Sieracki’s brothers were in high school sports, the family would work frantically to nish chores before the activity began. If chores could not be pushed, Sieracki would stay home and nish them as her parents went to support her siblings. The same routine was upheld when Sieracki began running. At the time, Sieracki’s brothers were away at college but would come home to milk the 300cow herd so their parents could attend the meets. “Honestly, who knows where I’d be if it weren’t for my parents’ encouragement,” Sieracki said. “They were always there. They wanted us to get involved in high school activities. And, they wanted farming to enhance those experiences not take away from them.” Now, because of the physical nature of her job, Sieracki does not help on the farm as often. However, she is always mindful of the dairying mentality while training. She found a passion without looking

Lindahl named 2019 Minnesota Jersey Queen By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com

ONALASKA, Wis. – When Isabelle Lindahl chose the word serendipity as the prex for her blossoming young herd of Jerseys, it was because the word had a personal meaning for her. It described how she came to love the little brown cows that were part of her family’s dairy herd. “The denition of serendipity is to nd good without looking, and that kind of describes how I came to love the Jersey cow,” Lindahl said. “I found a huge passion without really looking for it.” Lindahl, 18, was named the 2019 Minnesota Jersey Queen at the Minnesota All-Breeds Convention, hosted by the Houston County Holstein Breeders, March 2 in Onalaska, Wis. In her second semester of her freshman year at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Lindahl is double majoring in animal science with an emphasis in dairy production and agricultural and food business management. She is involved in the Gopher Dairy Club, Block and Bridle, and the Beta of Clovia sorority. She also works in the sheep barn on campus. Lindahl’s parents, Kevin and Tara, and their family milk 100 head, most of which are Holsteins, with a small group of about 13 Jerseys. Including youngstock, they have approximately 300 head on the farm near Lindstrom, Minn. “My grandpa started with Jerseys, so they’ve always been a part of our herd,” Lindahl said. “I started showing them when I was 6 years old, and they have sort of become my thing.” Exhibiting her Jerseys is something Lindahl nds a great deal of enjoyment in, and she has participated in the Minnesota State Fair, the Chisago County Fair, the Parish 4 Jersey Show, the Sauk Centre Dairy Days, the Wisconsin Spring Spectacular and the Midwest Jersey Jamboree.

One of her favorite cows was Lindahl Hired Gun Claudia, a cow Lindahl experienced a great deal of showring success with. Unfortunately, Claudia passed away two years ago, but left two daughters and now two granddaughters to continue her legacy. “Claudia was the cow that made me know that Jerseys were my passion,” Lindahl said. “She made me decide that I wanted work with Jersey cows.” Lindahl purchased her rst heifer from outside the family’s Jersey herd two years ago at the Midwest Spring Special sale. That heifer, Budjon-Vail Verdict Geri, recently calved. The resulting calf, Serendipity Craze Genevieve, is the rst animal to carry Lindahl’s newly-minted prex. In addition to showing, Lindahl has taken part in the Minnesota Junior Jersey Breeder’s production contest. The decision to apply to represent the state’s breed organization as the Minnesota Jersey Queen was one that came easy to Lindahl. “I wanted to nd a way to create a lasting impact on the Jersey breed in Minnesota, and I felt that representing the breed and the association as the Minnesota Jersey Queen was a good way to do that,” Lindahl said. “I want to be able to advocate for the breed and promote the Queen of Quality brand throughout the state.” While the position of the Minnesota Jersey Queen typically requires attendance at shows and sales throughout the state to represent the breed, Lindahl is looking forward to adding her own mark on the position. “I’m really excited to try something new,” Lindahl said. “I plan to go into local elementary schools and reach out to the kids in the schools. I’ve done that with some other groups, and it’s always been very well received. I think bringing the Jersey breed into the classroom is a great way to promote the benets of the breed within the dairy industry.” Lindahl’s aspirations to promote the breed will not end when she gives up her crown next spring. She looks forward to applying for the position of the National Jersey Queen, which is chosen each November at the all-American show in Louisville, Ky.

Future goals for Lindahl also include becoming a nalist for, and maybe serving as, Princess Kay of the Milky Way. Following her graduation from the University of Minnesota, she hopes to nd a career in agricultural sales or nance, and to someday have her own farm and a herd of Jersey cows. Lindahl credits her family with allowing her to set these goals for herself and work to achieve them. In particular, she said her grandmother has been a great mentor in her life. “I can remember helping my grandma feed calves when I was younger, and thinking I wanted to grow up to be just like her,” Lindahl said.

The objective of the Dairy Task Force 2.0 is to facilitate communication and develop actionable items to address the challenges facing Wisconsin’s dairy industry to maintain the state’s leadership as America’s Dairyland. For the past several months, the 31 members have been working together in nine subcommittees to draft recommendations. The sub-committees are: dairy and rural community vitality, access to capital, education and workforce, consumer condence and perception, price volatility and protability, markets, regulatory certainty, research and innovation, and generational succession and transition. During the March meeting, the Dairy Task Force 2.0 will discuss and vote on about 50 recommendations developed by the sub-committees. Previously at the December meeting, the Dairy Task Force 2.0 approved two recommendations, the need to increase access to capital for rural dairy processors and the need to invest in additional research in the University of Wisconsin System. Bill Halfman, UW-Madison Extension Monroe County Agriculture Agent, will discuss the economics of beef feeding enterprises to determine if they are a good t for their operation and resources plus showcase spreadsheet tools and some benchmark numbers producers should consider. Tina Kohlman, UW-Madison Extension Fond du Lac Dairy & Livestock Agent, will present on the economics for farms that are no longer milking but are considering raising pre-weaned calves to utilize their facilities and labor for income generation. After the presentations there will be a question and answer period for questions from the audience. In addition, the program will be archived for viewing at a later time. Following registration, a link will be emailed with directions on how to access the webinar. Come learn about how people who share little in terms of language and culture bridge that gap by looking beyond the surface and taking the time to get to know one another on a deeper level. Get to know Anna Boesl of Boyceville, Wis.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am in FFA and 4-H and show dairy and beef at the fair every summer. I have also shown at the Wisconsin State Fair for three years. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I am involved in these organizations because all of my siblings were involved in them, and it has been part of my life forever. I enjoy spending a week at the fair every summer and spending time with friends. I got involved in showing at the state fair with the Barron County show team because of my close friend, Allissa Frisle. My favorite activity is the county fair. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Showing beef two years ago and winning rate of gain and rst place dairy steer showing my Fleckvieh-Holstein cross. I also won overall champion that year based on rate of gain, carcass and live show placing. My favorite experience at state fair has been celebrating my 16th, 17th and 18th birthdays. Allissa bought me 16 cream puffs, 17 egg rolls and 18 McDonald’s hashbrowns to celebrate with team members. What’s your favorite social media? My favorite social media is Snapchat. I like looking at stories and seeing what people are up to.

When do you do chores, and what chores do you do? I usually do chores everyday at night when I’m home. I help grain heifers and our young calves, then head to the barn to feed silage and grain to the cows. Then, we scrape stalls and make sure there’s bedding under the cows and start milking. After milking, we feed hay. What’s your favorite and least favorite chores? I like hauling hay in the summer; milking with my dad. Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? The Restructure Loan program is available for renancing debt related to agricultural activities only and requires collateral of a rst mortgage on farm real estate. “This may be a good option for Minnesota farmers who are in good standing with their local lender but are struggling with cash ow,” said RFA Senior Loan Ofcer Ryan Roles. “The current interest rate is 4.25 percent and the participation term may be up to a maximum of ten years.” The RFA will participate on 45 percent of a qualifying loan up to a maximum of $525,000. There is a $50.00 non-refundable application fee on all loans. An applicant must meet the following requirements: – Be a resident of Minnesota, a Minnesota domestic family farm corporation, or family farm partnership. – Be the principal operator of the farm. – Not be a current or previous participant in an RFA farm debt reorganization program.a – Have a total net worth that does not exceed $1,777,000 (indexed for ination). – Have received 50 percent of their gross income from farming over the past three years. – Have expenses that do not exceed 95 percent of income.
