Total dissolved solids in the water were incredibly high at over 4,000 parts per million. Things like calcium, iron and manganese were off the charts. “It affected nearly every aspect of our dairy,” Gross said. “From the cows’ drinking water to the chemicals we used in the parlor, to the pumps and more. We learned that golf courses wouldn’t even use this water on their grass. Therefore, we knew if the cows drank it, we’d have problems.” In February 2017, Gross put in a system that metered peroxide into the water. This was an improvement that enabled Gross to back off on chemicals used to run the wash water. The palatability for the cows also got better. However, there was still a cap on what cows could do productionwise. Then Gross came across a company called Nalco – a diTurn to PDPW | Page 3

Working primarily with municipalities, Nalco sampled the water at Ash Grove Dairy and designed a system using green sand lters and quadrupled the size of their water softener. The system was installed in February 2018, and within a month, the farm gained 8 pounds of milk per cow. Feltz and his wife, Jackie, own Feltz Family Farms and Feltz’s Dairy Store where they milk 440 cows in a double-12 parlor and 240 cows in four robots. They also raise 100 grass-fed Angus steers and farm 700 acres. Their sons, Jared and Jake, daughter, Taryn, and daughter-in-law, Jenna, also work on the farm. The Feltzes opened an on-farm retail store 2.5 years ago in which they sell local products such as cheese, milk, ice cream, beef, wine, chocolates and more. They also give tours to school children and have a petting zoo, pumpkin patch and corn maze. Feltz said one of his regrets was spending unnecessary money when he took over his father’s farm in 1993. He paid to have the farm’s four tower silos taken down so he could build bunker silos instead. “I spent $250,000 for wall sections, but I never really needed those,” Feltz said. “Because three years ago, I took out the walls and went to drive-over piles. We spent all that money when we were young and didn’t need to.” Feltz also expressed a desire for investing more money in the stock market. “I wish I had invested in a stock like Amazon or Apple years ago,” Feltz said. “I know that’s easy to say now, but if you invested $1,000 in Amazon

23 years ago, you’d have half a million dollars today.” Feltz began investing when he was 30 years old and started 529 plans for all of his kids and grandkids along with Roth IRAs for his children. “I encourage people to invest even a small amount of money every month,” Feltz said. “The funny thing is it doesn’t take a lot of money to make money.” Another area that caused issues for the Grosses was dry cow housing. Deciding to house dry cows at a next-door neighbor’s farm about 200 yards away proved problematic due to the hoof travel between facilities. Gross built a lane for walking cows back and forth between the main barn at Ash Grove Dairy and the dry cow facility. Once a week, they would walk close-up cows back to the main farm. “We got away with this during the rst year because we had a mild winter,” Gross said. “But the last couple of years, it seemed we had a blizzard every other week or it rained all the time. It’s a long walk, and we had many freshcow issues, such as intake problems related to the weather, which caused a lot of trouble. We also had cows calving in with higher somatic cell counts.” The housing issue was resolved last summer for the short term by moving dry cows into the Grosses’ cross-ventilated milk cow barn. Room was made through a combination of overcrowding late-lactation cows and milking a few less cows. “It’s not ideal, but it works for the time being,” Gross said. “We’re currently looking at a new close-up, dry facility in partnership with our neighbor.” Feeding calves with automatic

feeders has also caused some bumps in the road for Gross, who admitted he did not know much about the feeders when he began using this technology. “It was a pretty steep learning curve those rst few months as we learned how to manage calves in groups,” Gross said. “Whether it was detecting illness or just guring out what to expect, as well as doing maintenance on feeders. I should’ve visited dairies that

were using the feeders and picked their brain. … I wish I would’ve dug into them more.” The Grosses built their dairy with the ability to expand and would like to double in size over the next few years. Gross plans to incorporate a cow monitoring system with his next expansion. To avoid more surprises with a new product, he has spent considerable time doing research and talking to dairies that use these systems. “I’m doing a fair amount of homework so that when I make a decision, hopefully it’s one that I can live with,” Gross said. “I’d like to nd a system where the learning curve is not as steep or nd a system with a really

good support team that can walk us through that learning curve.” Focusing on doing one thing well versus doing many things mediocre was Feltz’s nal top three item he shared. “I oundered around a lot when I rst started farming,” Feltz said. “I did lots of different things, from raising all our youngstock, as well as chickens and pigs to cash cropping peas, green beans and sweet corn. I was OK at some of these, but I wasn’t great at any of them.” Feltz said it was a tough ride and never thought they would make it. “I always hoped the price of milk would go up, and our somatic cell count would go down,” he said. “But I didn’t take steps to make that happen; therefore, I didn’t achieve success. Once I changed my mindset and decided to become great at just one thing – milking cows – things changed.” Feltz sold his machinery and youngstock which allowed him to pay down on debt. Any money he could scratch up, Feltz used to buy a cow. “The more cows I had, the more milk they gave, and the more money I made to buy more cows,” Feltz said. “You have to have condence and believe in yourself.” By reecting on past mistakes, dairy producers can nail down what they would change if they could do it over and use that knowledge to make better decisions in the future. “It would’ve been benecial had we known more about automatic calf feeders and our water quality, for example, early on,” Gross said. “But we learned a lot in the meantime, and I’d like to think we’re doing a better job now.”

Antibiotic resistance: Where are we headed?

MADISON, Wis. – The inability to treat an infectious disease, whether in humans or animals, is a scary thought. This becomes a reality when bacteria prove resistant to certain antibiotics. Bacteria reproduce rapidly. And over time, bacteria have learned how to outsmart antibiotics. Extensive use of an antibiotic can lead to bacteria becoming resistant to its effects, clearing the path for various infections or diseases to gain footing. “Antibiotic resistance was discovered only 85 years after using the rst effective antibiotic,” said Dr. Mike Apley, DVM, professor of veterinary clinical sciences at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Mike Apley, “When there’s a mutation that confers resistance to an anti- Dr. DVM biotic, the use of that antibiotic in that population can select Kansas State for those with that mutation. The genetic components that University made up the mutation can be transferred not only within specie but between gender and sometimes within the family of bacteria. It’s really dramatic how it can move through a population.” Apley’s presentation, “Impacts of Antibiotic Resistance,” during the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin Virtual Business Conference March 19 explored the history of antibiotic groups and the role resistance plays in food animal production and human health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur in the United States each year, resulting in more than 35,000 deaths. In addition, there were an estimated 223,900 cases of Clostridioides difcile in 2017 and at least 12,800 of these cases died. C. diff is a bacterium that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inammation of the colon and usually occurs after using an antibiotic. Agriculture gets tagged in many conversations about antibiotic resistance because it is an industry that produces food for people. Concern surrounding the use of antibiotics in food animals is founded on the premise that a resistant organism could be released into the environment or somehow survive processing and end up inside the body. Antibiotics have come a long way since the days of using crude treatments like arsenic derivatives or mercury cream to wipe out a bacterial infection. Sulfas were invented in 1935, and in 1942, penicillin was created. The rst tetracycline (chlortetracycline) was released in 1948 and used extensively in both animals and humans. A burst of antibiotics came on the scene in the 1940s and 1950s as new groups were added, such as chloramphenicol, neomycin, erythromycin, vancomycin and virginiamycin. In 1985, carbapenems were introduced. These, used for hyper-resistant organisms, are used on the human side but not in food animal medicine. Since 1985, a couple major groups have emerged for use in human medicine. Enrooxacin could be used in a replacement heifer, but there are no uoroquinolones labeled for use in lactating dairy cows. “It’s been 42 years since animal production has seen a new group of antibiotics,” Apley said. “And the likelihood of a new group being released for extensive use in animals is minimal.” A pathogen is either susceptible or resistant to antibiotics. One that is susceptible will respond to treatment with antibiotics. And one that is resistant will not respond; the antibiotic will have no effect. How quick does resistance happen? The rst clinical use of penicillin occurred in 1942. By 1949, the rst resistant staff bacteria showed up. Ampicillin began use in 1962, and in 1966, bacteria resistant to the drug were found. Cefotaxime was invented in 1979 and showed resistance by 1985. That same year, carbapenems were introduced with rst resistance occurring in 1993. Many times, it took only four to seven years from when the drug was rst released to its rst resistant organism being detected. Whether talking about a mastitis pathogen, a pneumonia pathogen, an E. coli from a calf with scours, or an organism from foot rot, one can look at the concentration of drug required to kill the bacteria. When bacteria are inhibited at a low dose of medicine, such as 0.06 or 0.12 micrograms per milliliter, that means it is susceptible to the antibiotic. Whereas, if it takes 8, 16 or 32 micrograms/ml, this means the population is resistant and associated with a resistant gene or genes. When an antibiotic is rst in use, a large amount of the population requires a low concentration to inhibit the bacteria. As time passes, more bacteria break Turn to RESISTANCE | Page 6

away, and after years of extensive use, there might be a group that is resistant. Bacteria can become dominant when placed under the pressure of an antibiotic. If it continually receives that pressure, even intermittently, it can select for the resistant ones in that population, and they can become dominant. â€œMutations occur that allow for resisting the effect of this antibiotic,â€? Apley said. â€œAnd as we apply selective pressure on a population, weâ€™ve now selected for more and more of those to be present.â€? Resistance does not necessarily mean there is no effective treatment for the infection. Rather, it means a different antibiotic will need to be used, and multiple drugs may have to be tried before a winner is found. However, waiting too long to intervene on an infectious disease could lessen the chances of a good outcome. The veterinarian and producer should work together to dig out evidence that a drug will work. Antibiotic resistance can force the use of more dangerous choices. Desperate measures to ďƒžnd an antibiotic that works when no other option does has led to using a drug called colistin in humans, which is highly toxic to the kidneys in some cases. Organisms pertaining to the dairy industry that are rated as a serious resistance threat include drug-resistant non-typhoidal salmonella, which can come through the food chain via meat but rarely does. Extended spectrum Ă&#x;-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae, such as salmonella and E.coli, is another resistant organism documented in food animals. Salmonella Newport is a bacteria that can occur in cattle and one that shows some serious resistance. Apley said it is a very aggressive pathogen

when it gets turned loose and can often be fatal. Mannheimia haemolytica is one of the primary respiratory pathogens found in dairy and beef cattle with pneumonia. It is a dominant pathogen that is resistant to ampicillin, enroďƒ&#x;oxacin, gentamicin, penicillin, spectinomycin, tilmicosin and more. It does, however, show susceptibility to ceftiofur and ďƒ&#x;orfenicol. The use of antimicrobial drugs in food producing animals is decreasing. Sales of these drugs

Tetracyclines, which represent the largest volume of domestic sales in food producing animals with usage split evenly between the dominant users of cattle and swine, decreased in use by 40% from 2016-17. Fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins are critically important human drugs that comprise a small portion of use in food animals. The Food and Drug Administration has a ďƒžveyear action plan for antibiotic use in food production animals, which includes promoting antimicrobial stewardship and enhancing processes to support product development. Under this plan, the FDA would like to bring all dosage forms of medi-

cally important antimicrobial drugs approved for use in food-producing animals under the oversight of a licensed veterinarian. Apley predicts that by the end of 2022, the industry will see the removal of all over-the-counter antibiotic labels as they are replaced by prescription labels. Failure to prevent infection is the ďƒžrst failure of antibiotic stewardship, Apley said. The second failure is the failure to appropriately treat the infection with an effective antibiotic. And the ultimate antibiotic failure is bacterial population exposure without achieving the desired effect. â€œThose are the things we try to prevent as we pursue antibiotic stewardship and preserve the ability to have these valuable tools,â€? Apley said. Apley believes the biggest area of vulnerability for the dairy industry is the use of antibiotics for prevention and control. â€œI think we have a lot of uses that are certainly justiďƒžed due to disease pressures we see and the fact weâ€™ve demonstrated these to be effective,â€? Apley said. â€œBut thereâ€™s going to be public conversations about why we need to use them for this reason. For example, thereâ€™s a lot of discussion about blanket dry cow therapy versus selective dry cow therapy.â€? How can the industry work together to shape the future for responsible use of antibiotics? â€œWe need to continue to be open and transparent in all the ways we try to control diseases,â€? Apley said. â€œWe need to make sure we have protocols in place when we use antibiotics, and that we monitor their outcome and continue to evolve in our sophistication and recordkeeping. Weâ€™ve come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.â€?

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am the vice president of my 4-H club, Alto Allstars, and I am an FFA ofcer at my high school.

What is your favorite social media? My favorite social media is probably Snapchat because I can keep in touch with my friends who I don’t get to see all the time.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I joined 4-H to show dairy at a local fair, and I ended up learning a lot about the topic and really enjoyed doing it. Being a part of FFA would have to be my favorite. I originally joined FFA in seventh grade because I grew up on a dairy farm and thought it would be something that I would enjoy. Since then, I have gotten much more out of it than I ever thought. FFA has taught me how to educate others about agriculture, and it has helped me grow my leadership skills.

What are your career aspirations? Next year, I plan to attend the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh to study nursing. Although my future career isn’t in agriculture, my past in agriculture has provided me with the skills I will use for the rest of my life and take with me into my future career.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. This past year, I joined the FFA ofcer team and this has given me many additional opportunities through FFA. The best experience would have to be going on the National FFA Convention trip. This trip was a lot of fun because it allowed me to bond with people from our chapter and meet members from all over the country.

What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? It is important to put effort into everything you do. I believe that growing up on a farm has taught me to have a work ethic that I will use for the rest of my life. In addition, when showing dairy, this work ethic is important because you get out of it what you put into it. The more time that you spend with your animal, the better control you will have when showing them. FFA has also contributed to these life skills and has made me into a better leader than I ever thought I could be. Who do you look up to? I look up to my older brother, Brant,

because he inuenced me to join FFA right away in middle school because he was a part of it in high school, and he knew how much it impacts a person’s life. He also has taught me just about everything I know about cows, and although I don’t admit it much, his love of cows has rubbed off on me. Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when I was 9 years old. This has greatly impacted my life to this day, and it led me to choose nursing as my future career. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. On the farm, my main responsibilities include cleaning the barn, feeding the calves and assisting with milking the cows. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? If I could change one thing in the world, it would be for food to be equally distributed across the world. There are many people who go without food in countries across the world. Fixing this would be a long process that would require a lot of money, but hopefully, over time this problem would diminish.

DATCP provides resources to farmers, agricultural businesses on COVID-19 The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is providing resources for the state’s consumers, farmers, and agricultural businesses as they navigate the challenges presented by COVID-19. These resources can be found at https://www.datcp.wi.gov/ and include helpful information such as: Information on Executive Order No. 72 and Emergency Order No. 5 regarding gatherings of 10 people or more, which makes important exemptions for manufacturing, processing, distribution, and production facilities. Links to state and federal agency tips and information (also available at gov/ COVID19) Toolkit for farmers and agricultural organizations to assist in planning ahead FAQs on price gouging, animal and livestock health, food supply and delivery, and crops and agribusinesses. “We understand this is a confusing and stressful time, especially for those in agriculture,” said DATCP Interim Secretary Randy Romanski. “We aim to serve as a resource for farmers, consumers, and agribusinesses in need of assistance as they plan their response to COVID-19.” In addition to continually updating the DATCP website as information on COVID-19 evolves, the agency is conducting weekly calls with industry stakeholders to provide updates, share information, and access resources. Agricultural stakeholders should work through their agricultural associations to

compile questions and concerns. These organizations will then share those items with DATCP on their designated weekly call. People should follow simple steps to prevent illness and avoid exposure to the 2019 novel coronavirus, including: – Avoid social gatherings with people of all ages (including playdates and sleepovers, parties, large family dinners, visitors in your home, non-essential workers in your house); – Frequent and thorough hand washing with soap and water; – Covering coughs and sneezes; – Avoiding touching your face; and – Staying home when sick. Governor Walz signs $50 million Rural Finance Authority Bill Governor Tim Walz today signed a bill allocating $50 million to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) Rural Finance Authority (RFA) into law, allowing the RFA to continue offering eligible Minnesota farmers affordable nancing and terms and conditions not offered by other traditional lenders. Without the investment, many Minnesota farmers would face a credit crunch caused by several years of low commodity prices and rising expenses. RFA loans are particularly important early in the year when Minnesota farmers review their nances and restructure debt ahead of the growing season. “We’re so pleased that the Legislature understood the urgent need to replenish these funds so we can continue to help beginning farmers and those who want to expand or restructure,” Commissioner Thom Petersen said. “This is money that will come back to help Minnesota farmers again and again in the years to come.” In addition to helping farmers secure nancing, the Rural Finance Authority also offers a variety other programs to strengthen Minnesota farm families and communities. These programs are designed to help new farmers purchase land, restructure debt, invest in farm improvements, and nance livestock production facilities. After many years of dairy farming, Jeff has decided to disperse his milking herd at this time. Current DHIA test shows a 70 lb. per cow average w/a 3.8% B.F., 3.1 Pro. The herd is producing very well but have not been pushed for production w/no TMR feeding. Milk quality has always been a priority of Jeff â€™s w/bulk tank receipts showing a SCC in the 35,000-65,000 range. This has been a 100% A-I sired, homebred herd for many years. Top sires from Select Sires have been used resulting in very nice dairy framed cows w/exceptional feet, legs & udders as well. This is a very young herd w/45 cows being in their 1st or 2nd lactation. The cows are housed in a tie stall barn & are left out daily for exercise & bunk feeding. Herd health is excellent w/routine hoof trimming & vac. (Triangle 10) up to date. All pertinent ID, production, SCC & breeding info will be posted on sale day. This will be an excellent opportunity to purchase very good replacement cows right off a well managed farm.
