MARSHFIELD, Wis. – Jana Sternweis is the queen of her new castle, a new mechanically ventilated calf barn that was built on her family’s farm located outside Marsheld, Wis. Sternweis and her husband, Clint, with their four children, operate Mara-Wood Dairy
along with Clint’s parents, Steve and Dolores, and his brother, Brian. They milk 500 head and raise all their replacements. Typically, 250 calves are born each year on the farm. Those calves spend the rst 16 to 20 weeks of life in the new facility. There are usually about 80 calves taking

While making decisions about their facility, they toured several calf barns that had been built using the technology they were interested in. Excavation for the project began a year ago in February, and then early weight limit restrictions on the roadways brought the project to a halt, further delayed by a wet spring. “It took longer to complete than we wanted,” Sternweis said. “We had planned to be in the new barn in June, but it went about 60 days over.” In August, the rst calves nally moved into the barn, which features two DeLaval automatic feeders and the ability to add a third. Each feeder services two pens. Each pen has a maximum of 20 calves, all born within a two-week time span. Pens are rotated on an all-in, all-out basis, and cleaned and sanitized with a detergent, sanitizer and OxyMer between each group. The two extra pens that don’t currently have feeders are being used as transition pens for the calves between weaning and moving to their heifer facilities. The barn’s mechanical ventilation system runs four quadrants to help regulate the climate. The barn also features in-oor heat and walkways around the pens on all sides. Entrance to each pen is gained through doors that open from the feeder room, located in the center of the building. Calves spend the rst ve to seven days of life in individual Calf-Tel pens in the barn’s nursery area, where everything is cleaned and sanitized between calves. At birth, calves are fed one gallon of pasteurized colostrum that is tested with a refractometer to ensure its quality. “I’m really picky about my colostrum,” Sternweis said. “I won’t feed anything that tests under 25IgG.” The farm sells extra colostrum to the Saskatoon Colostrum Company, Ltd., providing an additional source of income. Working with her calf nutritionist is an important part of Sternweis’ calf raising program, using the Purina 40Fit Plan. She feeds Cows Match milk replacer in the automatic feeders and the calves are fed Amplicalf starter while on milk. When they move to the transition pen, they are switched to TCR grower pellets. Calves have fresh water, heated to 80 degrees, available to them at all times. Calves also have salt blocks and mineral tubs. “Having that warm water available to them at all times has been really great,” Sternweis said. “Between that and the automated feeders, I see less bloat and trouble with water-bellies. They don’t attack the milk like they used to, they drink much better. We used to only feed twice a day in the old barn. I think they are eating starter sooner and better in here, too.”

The barn has six pens with the ability to house three feeders. Currently, the Sternweises use two feeders. Each side of the barn, which are mirror images of each other, houses three of the six pens. When calves move from the nursery and start on the automatic feeders, they are allowed 10 liters of milk. After seven days on the feeders, they can have as much milk as they want each day, but are limited to 3.5 liters at a time, and must wait several hours before receiving more. Average daily consumption ranges from 12 to 17 liters. Sternweis said she has an average daily weight gain of 2.2 pounds. At day 40, calves begin the process of weaning, with decreasing amounts of milk being fed. Weaning is completed by day 56. Sternweis has access to data about how many times calves ate at the feeders and how many refusals they had. “I know what they are eating, and I know the speed at which they are drinking, too,” Sternweis said. “That’s a great tool to help detect any potential problems before they actually become an issue.” Sternweis said the calves seem happier and are more social. She has no issues with calves cross-sucking, either. “They just look better overall,” Sternweis said. “It’s a visible difference in their hair coats, even their toplines look better. My calves are completely different than they were in the old barn. They play a lot, and I think that socialization is very important. I see a lot more muscle tone in these calves.” The Sternweises are seeing great improvements in the calves raised in the new barn. “We haven’t had any trouble with pneumonia,” Sternweis said. “In the rst six months, we’ve only had one calf with a respiratory issue. We don’t
have any issues with scours either.” Biosecurity and sanitation are important pieces of Sternweis’ calf protocol. “Each entrance to the building has a key lock,” Sternweis said. “No one else feeds or really works in here besides me or my husband. I do a lot of cleaning, and I have a bootwash for everyone to use by the front door. Keeping bad bacteria and bugs out is better than ghting them once they get in.” The Sternweises are hoping their new facility will help them achieve their goals of breeding heifers younger,
with greater conception on the rst service. They are hoping to develop higher-producing 2-year-olds and cows that have longer productive lives due to the better start to life they get as calves in the calf barn. “At a conference I attended, I heard a speaker who said something that really resonated with me,” Sternweis said. “Dr. Victor S. Cortese said, ‘A cow’s production is determined in her rst 60 days of life.’ I’ve kept that quotation in my mind, and it’s the motto I use when raising my calves.”

MALONE, Wis. – A rst-of-its-kind meeting aimed at providing education for Hispanic dairy managers took place March 1 at Lake Breeze Dairy in Malone, Wis. The seminar was led by Elsie Gonzalez of Motiva Consulting, a dairy consulting agency based out of West Bend, Wis. Twenty-three people attended the training sponsored by Zoetis and Ozaukee County Dairy Promotion. “The key to dairy farmers having a successful working relationship with their Hispanic employees is making their expectations clear from day one,” Gonzalez said. “Making expectations and how they will be measured clear allows the team to better focus on
their tasks. They are a reliable workforce, but like all workers, they need to understand what is expected of them.” Mark Diederichs manages Lake Breeze Dairy, which is part of Breeze Dairy Group along with Pine Breeze Dairy in Poy Sippi, Wis., and Spring Breeze Dairy in Antigo, Wis. Diederichs owns the dairy with his partners, Lynn and Catherine Davis, Ron and Chris Schwenck, Rick Schwenck, Thiel Ventures, and Brian and Lynn Gerrits. Between the three sites, Breeze Dairy Group has over 100 employees, over 75 percent of which are Hispanic. “We focus on things being really team-oriented here,” Diederichs said. “We offer leadership training and resources to our employees. We provide a library of Spanish leadership books for our employees to borrow.” According to Diederichs, when Lake Breeze Dairy rst started 15 years ago, few of the Hispanic workers spoke English.

They are spending their money here and are dedicated to our community. Several of our workers have been here since the beginning.” Filadelfo Lopez is one of the workers who has been with Lake Breeze Dairy since 2003, when he started as a milker in the parlor. “I told my boss, Rick Schwenck, I did not want to milk cows forever,” Lopez said. “He gave me the time and the opportunity to grow and advance.” From his start as a milker, Lopez moved in a position working in the maternity

pens at nights, followed by a promotion to becoming a herdsman. Two years ago, he started working in his current position focusing on reproductive management. “If you focus on what you want, you can make it happen,” Lopez said of his career journey. “You just have to keep working, learning and growing.” Diederichs puts a great deal of value on providing training for all of his workers. Each month, he holds training meetings for the workers on his dairy. He works hard to provide a team atmosphere to the farm, and holds events and meals inviting workers and their families to attend. “We have pretty stringent values here,” Diederichs said

of the expectations he has for his workers. “We post our values on the walls in the breakrooms. If people don’t have those same values, they don’t stay around. We have a good core of guys who have been here a long time.” Most employees at Lake Breeze Dairy begin working in the parlor as milkers. When openings come up in the barns, Diederichs likes to promote workers from within. Alvaro Ramirez has been with Lake Breeze Dairy for over six years. He also began his career with the farm as a milker, and then became a shift leader after two years. For the past three and half years, he has managed the operation of the entire milking parlor. “I work to monitor milk quality and prevent disease in our cows,” Ramirez said. “I hire and train new milkers, and teach people protocols for proper milking. We have team meetings every two weeks to talk about how to do things properly.” In addition to training his own milking crew at Lake Breeze Dairy, Ramirez assisted Gonzalez in training his management peers during the meeting held on the farm. Ramirez appreciates the positive work culture that Breeze Dairy Group has fostered. “They respect their team,” Ramirez said of the owners. “That makes us all want the best for the farm. Everybody is a team, and we make a good team.” Gonzalez started Motiva Consulting over two years ago, with Lake Breeze Dairy being her rst client. Gonzalez holds training meetings in English and Spanish, working with employers and employees, alike. She has plans to hold more meetings of this nature in other locations. “They really have embraced this opportunity to learn and take new things back to the farms they work on,” Gonzalez said of the meeting attendees. “This has been great. There is a lot of good discussion and idea-sharing taking place. Explaining the ‘why’ of why things are expected to be done in a particular manner plays a big role. Everyone wants to know the end goal and feel that what they are doing is making a difference.” In addition to helping facilitate the communication that can help bridge the cultural gap between dairy producers and their Hispanic work force, she works with the producers to trouble-shoot and solve other problems they might be facing, such as high somatic cell counts and increased mastitis troubles. “Clearly communicating about things like job descriptions, pay scales, reviews and raises is important to the workers,” Gonzalez said. “Sharing knowledge, providing feedback and offering opportunities to develop leadership skills is important to the employees.” Diederichs agreed with Gonzalez about providing workers with feedback on a regular basis. “We evaluate all our milkers in the parlor every six months, and our salaried employees on a yearly basis,” Diederichs said. “But we talk to them daily and provide feedback, helping them understand the dairy operation. Making them feel valued is important.” Breeze Dairy Group takes the idea of valuing their employees beyond the farm, taking an interest in the issues that are facing the Hispanic community. When recent immigration rallies were held in Madison, Breeze Dairy Group owners supported their staff, offering rides for anyone who was off. “We walked right alongside them to show our solidarity with them. We really want them to understand how much we value them and what they do for us,” Diederichs said.

A family tradition

OTTERTAIL, Minn. – Of all the values the Menzes share, family is at the core. It is a value that was fundamental to the farm’s prosperity 104 years ago and still remains today. Michael and Denise Menze are in a partnership with Michael’s parents – Delvin and Bette – where they milk 86 cows and run 1,000 acres of land near Ottertail, Minn. This year, the family is celebrating their farm’s century status. “That means I’ve been milking cows for 68 years,� Delvin said. While Michael and Denise rent Delvin and Bette’s share of the farm, the responsibilities are divided amongst the group. Michael oversees the operation in its entirety, Denise feeds the calves twice daily, manages bookwork and keeps the crew fed, and Delvin and Bette help when they are able, milking cows, doing yard work and hauling wagons during harvest. “Farming keeps you busy and [Delvin] doesn’t know any better,� Bette said. The Menzes also work with one full-time employee, Taylor Sweazey. “We would be lost without him,� Denise said. Michael agreed. “Taylor started when he was a senior in high school. As a native of Germany, Christian traveled across the United States, looking for a place to settle and raise his family’s ve boys. The family settled in northwest Minnesota after short stints in Illinois,

purchased the farm that the enterprise became specialized in dairy and crops. “They started out with probably 20 milk cows. Then, we just kept expanding,” Delvin said. In 1965, the brothers purchased the farm from their mother, Erma, and soon after rebuilt the barn. They

the future. More land was purchased, crops were diversied to include corn, soybeans, alfalfa and oats, and cows lled the barn. “We were told that if you’re going to just have cows, you needed 40 cows for each family. So, we had 80,” said Delvin about he and Arvin’s partnership. The brothers also established irrigation throughout the cropland, put up harvestore silos and a heated calf barn, and installed computer feeder systems for the milking herd. When Michael was 22 years old, he began renting Arvin’s portion of the partnership, and would later purchase that entity of the farm in 2010. “Since 1998, the farm has grown more,” Michael said. “Dad and Uncle Arvie did things that were way before my time. At the time, some of these improvements were unheard of, but they were great.” The farm is located along Portage Lake, east of Ottertail, Minn., which has challenged the Menzes in further developing their operation in terms of animal units. “We haven’t really expanded because of the lake … and would they even allow us to grow?” Michael said. “So, we’ve maintained what we have and do a better job with it.” The Menzes focus on nutrition and reproduction to improve their herd and quality of product being made. “We just do a good job with what we have,” Michael said. “We’re feeding better feed and our breeding is getting better. As the cows get better, the barn is full and we’re not as apt to keep the bad cows.” When the freestall barn was put up, the Menzes housed both milking and dry cows in the facility. However, when Michael joined, a dry cow barn was

built allowing the cows to be housed separately. This aided in a better dry cow ration and overall cow comfort. Michael feeds his cows a ration consisting of corn silage, free-choice haylage, high moisture corn, whole oats and a custom protein mix. “I think the last few years, with the breeding and everything, we have more cows now. So much that we haven’t bought cows in 20 years and we have too many now,” Michael said. “The elevation of the dry cows, genetics and better herd health has been better.” Delvin agreed. “We’ve used genetics since 1957 and they’re getting better,” he said. “When we started with DHIA, the goal was always an 18,000-pound herd average. We always thought if we’d get that high we’d be happy to just keep going. Now, we’re way past that.” The Menzes also follow a calf health protocol that ensures longevity in the herd. A few years back, the family implemented a vaccine regime for the calves and youngstock. “Our heifer stock has been awesome, and that has a lot to do with our vaccination program,” Denise said. The Menzes can all agree that throughout the years, the farm has changed for the better. With these changes, though, the farm’s history remains present. Inside the milkhouse hangs two of the original Grade A milk permits – dated 1960 and 1964, respectively. Everyday, those permits are a humble reminder of the farm’s rich 104year history and its promising future. “One day, I hope to pass this along to Jacob and Makayla,” Michael said. “Farming is an excellent way to raise a family and it means a lot to keep farming.”

In-depth mineral review provides foundational resource for dairy scientists Absorption and utilization of macro- and microminerals detailed in a new review from the Journal of Dairy Science® Life is dependent on minerals. Accordingly, the diets of animals must contain certain minerals in both large amounts, via macrominerals, and small amounts, via microminerals. In a thorough and wide-ranging review, Jesse Goff, DVM, PhD, professor and Anderson Chair in Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, examined necessary minerals as well as the mechanisms for their absorption in cows, providing insight into these vital elements. “By understanding the mechanisms involved in movement of minerals from the diet into the blood of the animal, I hope the reader might gain some insight into factors that impair or enhance mineral utilization by animals,” Goff said. “With that knowledge, a nutritionist may have a better idea of when the diet needs more or less minerals and whether the form of the mineral used in the diet needs to be altered to better meet the needs of the cow.” In the review, Goff summarizes each of the seven macrominerals—calcium, phosphorus, sodium and chloride, potassium, magnesium, and sulfur—as well as several important microminerals, including cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, zinc, and chromium, that together contribute to a complete dietary nutrient prole for the cow. Two mechanisms of mineral absorption, paracellular absorption and transcellular absorption, are also discussed in great detail. Importantly, Goff also reviews factors such as the complex interactions that can interfere with mineral uptake and compromise the effectiveness of a diet in promoting health and productivity of cows. Others in the eld have already hailed Goff’s work as a foundational piece of scholarship. For instance, David Beede, PhD, professor emeritus in the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University, described the review as a unique piece of research with no equivalent to date. “This invited review is a go-to reference for mineral nutrition and dietary factors affecting fundamental physiology and mineral status of the animals serving mankind. The nine pictorial models illustrating gut transport mechanisms of different mineral ions are especially helpful to the fundamental understanding of mineral nutrition,” Dr. Beede said. The goal of this long-standing program is to invest in the future of the dairy industry by offering scholastic support to outstanding agriculture-focused students. “Education is the foundation of a successful industry,” says Lane Sollenberger, DCHA president. “Today’s students are tomorrow’s producers, technicians and veterinarians. We are pleased to offer a $1,000 scholarship opportunity to the DCHA membership. The scholarship will support a student who strives to work in the calf and heifer segment after graduation.” The annual DCHA scholarship is awarded to a student currently enrolled in an agriculture-related program at an accredited college or university. Even inoculant application is key for quality silage Uniform distribution of silage inoculants is an important factor in their ability to control the ensiling fermentation, and even gravity may be holding back inoculant performance. Some formulations may quickly settle out in the applicator tank — resulting in uneven application. “Inoculants contain live bacteria that are diluted and applied in small quantities during harvest,” says Renato Schmidt, Ph.D., Forage Products Specialist, Lallemand Animal Nutrition. “In as little as an hour, the bacteria, which are heavier than water, can sink to the bottom of the tank. Producers can end up applying the correct concentration of bacteria for the rst 30 to 60 minutes, then applying a more concentrated suspension as the bacteria settle out. Producers could apply pretty much just water later on in the application.” To address these issues, producers should look for inoculants with advanced suspension technology, like the high concentration (HC) technology from Lallemand Animal Nutrition. These formulations resist sedimentation for up to 24 hours after dilution to produce a more homogenous product application. Plus, HC technology inoculants are more compatible with low-volume applicators as there is less risk of clogged pumps. “HC technology produces a more stable suspension and improves bacterial stability,” Dr. Schmidt says. “With traditional inoculants, bacteria may only survive a few hours in the tank. If growers don’t use a full tank each day, they may have to drain and add fresh inoculant each day to get the optimum effectiveness. With HC technology, the bacteria can remain viable — and the tank is well mixed — into the following day.” To further improve application, Dr. Schmidt recommends producers calibrate application rates, and check the rates several times a day. Using insulated tanks also helps keep the product cool to help maintain viability. “Even application, and keeping the product cool, helps make the most of your inoculant investment,” he concludes. “Combined with good ensiling practices, inoculants can help growers produce high-quality silages that help lower feed costs and improve productivity.” NMC introduces Teat Condition Portfolio The National Mastitis Council (NMC) recently revealed a new member resource at the NMC Annual Meeting in Tucson, Ariz. The Teat Condition Portfolio (TCP), an online resource available only to NMC members, allows dairy specialists and personnel to quickly obtain images of various teat conditions. A “cowside” comparison provides quicker assessment of environmental, infectious and milking machine-induced teat conditions. Faster assessment will lead to earlier application of the appropriate action or future preventive measures, thus allowing dairy producers to increase protability. NMC Teat Health Committee Chair Keith Engel, GEA, launched the TCP during the annual business meeting. “Having the Teat Condition Portfolio available online to NMC members is a huge asset to all those working with teat health,” Engel said. Easily searchable by key word, the TCP allows members to go immediately to the teat symptoms that match what they are seeing. “Or, members can merely click through a variety of images until they nd a scenario that matches the teat ailment they are viewing in real time, cowside,” he said. Engel continued, “Because the resource is online, it can be easily updated with images submitted by members who encounter various teat conditions or have suggestions for new key words.” Meeting attendees, including dairy producers, veterinarians, researchers, extension specialists and industry suppliers are excited about the new educational online resource, Engel noted. The previous NMC Teat Condition Portfolio, developed by Teat Club International in the 1990s, was a valuable resource when developed at the time. “With today’s technology, it was denitely time to update this resource and make it available cowside,” Engel continued. “We are pleased with the benets NMC members will reap from this tool to help diagnose and improve teat health on dairy farms,” Engel concluded. Eight Milk Marketing Board director positions up for election The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) invites Wisconsin dairy producers who are interested in serving the state’s dairy industry to submit a nomination to represent their district as a Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB) director. DATCP oversees the nomination and election process. Eight out of 25 districts are currently up for election: District 2: Florence, Forest, Langlade, Marinette, Oconto and Vilas Counties District 5: St. Croix and Dunn Counties District 8: Marathon County District 11: Outagamie and Winnebago Counties District 14: Jackson, La Crosse and Trempealeau Counties District 17: Calumet and Manitowoc Counties District 20: Richland and Sauk Counties District 23: Iowa and Lafayette Counties To qualify, a nominee must be an active dairy producer who sells milk into commercial channels and lives in the represented district up for election. To attend the conference, you must be 22 years old by the day of the conference. The conference includes judging classes as well as cow-side classroom sessions. Get to know Johanna Kunert of De Soto, Wis.
What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in FFA and Vernon County Dairy Youth.
What’s your favorite social media? Instagram, because you get to share your experiences throughout your life with your friends.
She is such a kind-hearted person and cares for each of her students. She makes me laugh every day. I just love being around her can-do attitude.
Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I am involved in these because I love dairy. Ever since I was a kid, I have been working with the dairy cows and calves on the farm. I fell in love with it more and more each day. Being in these organizations allows me to expand my knowledge and do even more things within the dairy eld. My favorite organization would be FFA. I love to see people branch off into what they like to do, and in FFA there is something for everyone.
What are your career aspirations? My goal is to graduate from Northeast Iowa Community College with a degree in dairy science and work in genetics.
Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. Before high school, I was the shyest person you would ever meet. People would say they never heard me talk. Now, sometimes, I feel like I don’t stop talking. I love to communicate.
Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My best experience was judging dairy cattle. I have learned so much from this over the last four years and know there is so much more to learn. I have learned how to work with people and be on a team. This experience has allowed me to understand more about dairy cows themselves, but also it has given me great decisionmaking skills.
What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? I have learned how to be a better leader. Being president of the De Soto FFA has denitely challenged me but has made a huge impact on how I work with people. I have learned that not everyone does things the same way, so I have adapted to people and listened to what they have to say. Being a leader has taught me that people look up to you, and when you put hard work in, it can be very rewarding. Who do you look up to? My ag teacher and FFA advisor, Hillary Bark. She comes to school every day with a positive attitude and works hard for us. Early on in the year, I was having trouble getting students to join FFA, but she talked to them individually about the opportunities and explained that it’s not all about farmers.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would change the way the world views farmers. Just being in high school and trying to get people to join FFA is so difcult because they believe it isn’t cool enough or think it’s gross. Other people may think farmers misuse the land or the animals, but they don’t have their facts straight. We need to educate people more on how hard farmers work to feed everyone. It is a hard career, but it is probably the most important job to do.

I also have a one-hour early release from school every day to come home to farm. What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite is doing tractor work, especially pushing silage. That’s my job, and I get to drive a specic tractor – a John Deere 9630. My least favorite chore is sorting heifers. It takes a long time and the heifers don’t always like to cooperate. What’s your favorite animal on your farm? Tell us about it. There are a few pets in the herd that I like. They are bred Holstein heifers. One is No. 8440. She comes right up to me. People in the dairy community Curtis Weber, 60, passes away Curtis Weber, age 60 of Glenwood, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Feb. 18, 2018 at home under the care of hospice. Curtis Hugo Weber, son of Paul and Rosemary (Kelley) Weber, was born March 5, 1957, in Tyler, Minn. He grew up on a farm and attended school at Lake Benton. After high school, Curt enrolled at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, where he earned a degree in Agribusiness and also played football. On June 14, 1980, he married his college sweetheart, Angela Homan. The two rst made their home in Tyler and in 1988, the family moved to Glenwood, Minn. Their marriage was blessed with three sons, Corey, Brian, and Adam. Curt loved spending time with his devoted employees and loyal customers during his lifelong career at Midwest Machinery Co. He was also honored to serve on the Board of Directors at Eagle Bank for several years. Curt was an inspiration to everyone that knew him and touched countless lives. His humility, sense of humor, genuine kindness, generosity, and selessness will be his legacy. Curt never let ALS dene him or break his spirit, as evidenced by the way he carried himself. Throughout his courageous ght he continued to be a light and role model for those who knew him, always putting the needs of others before himself. Curt is survived by his mother, Rosemary Reynolds and her husband, Harold “Stub” of Pipestone; his wife, Angie, of Glenwood; their three sons, Corey (Christy) of Plymouth, Brian (Kirsten) of Plymouth, and Adam (Kristin) of Sartell; six grandchildren, Carson, Cami, Cooper, Caleb, Isaac, and Eddie; four sisters, Paulette Kissell, Patti Gackstetter, Colleen (Kelly) O’Briant, and Laurie (Barry) Cavanaugh; three brothers, Jeff (Kathy) Weber, Andy (Roxy) Weber, and Kelly (Wendi) Weber; caregiver and friend, Shawn Stumpf, and cousin, JT Weber; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
