Meet the 64th South Dakota Dairy Princess candidates Ytsje Anna Andringa 18 years old Parents: Sietse and Aafke Andringa Clear Lake, S.D. Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/or work on and your future plans. I grew up on a 90-head dairy farm in Alberta, Canada, and we moved to a dairy farm in Clear Lake in 2003. My parents started out with 350 milk cows and over time grew to 1,800 milk cows. In August 2016, my parents made the decision to put in their rst robotic milkers and quickly became a success. Looking to the future, my parents decided to continue to put more robotic milkers in. We also farm 1,000 acres of corn and buy another 500 acres which is harvested in the fall for silage. Along with corn, we farm about 150 acres of alfalfa plus another 600 acres we buy which is harvested anywhere between three to ve times a year depending on the year. I am the oldest of six children. I have four brothers and one sister. I will graduate in May and plan on attending Lake Area Technical Institute for nursing and continue to help my parents on the farm. What qualities do you have that will make you a good dairy princess? I enjoy associating with those in the community and hearing their insights on agriculture. I have a lot of determinations and dedication and always nish what I start. I have been involved in the dairy industry ever since I was old enough to talk. My passion for the dairy industry runs deep in my family’s roots. I am honest, reliable and self-motivated, and I believe that plays a huge role in being the South Dakota Dairy Princess. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important to my family and I because it has been a way of life for us. I enjoy being outdoors and being around cattle. The dairy industry suites me well. Dairy products are one of the best food products that people can consume anywhere from milk to cheese and even ice cream. Farmers try their hardest to produce these products as safe as possible. Dairy farmers are one of the businesses that impact the local communities the most. Anywhere from supporting hardware stores to elevators and most of all the local feed suppliers where farmers get feed to produce high quality milk. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? Many farmers work endless hours to produce high-quality milk and people need to understand the nutritious value on it. With the average person being two to three generations removed from a farm, there are more and more misconceptions about the dairy industry and the safety of milk. It is vital we continue to be transparent to the consumers on what actually takes place on dairy farms. And, to rebuild trust, I will be a strong advocate to younger kids.

Kendra Ann Schweer 18 years old Parents: Richard and Michelle Schweer Milbank, S.D. Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/or work on and your future plans. I have a younger brother and sister who also help on the family dairy that was established in 1958. I was raised on a registered Holstein 40-cow dairy. I started growing up on my uncle’s 90-cow dairy. There, my dad helped my uncle establish his herd of Holstein cows. In 2009, my dad got an opportunity to move to the home dairy. We have lived in Milbank for 10 years working to better our herd. I am an active member in the Grant County 4-H Junior Leader Program where I am the president. I am also the treasurer of my 4-H club. I am also a member of the Milbank FFA Chapter where I am a member of the dairy cattle evaluation team. I have been involved in the Milbank Ag Program since my eighth-grade year and have been judging since then also. I was the parliamentarian for our senior ofcer team in 2017-18 and junior ofcer during my eighth-grade year. We raise our feed from alfalfa hay, corn silage, ear corn, shell corn, wheat and soybeans. I plan to attend Lake Area Technical Institute for precision agriculture. I plan on becoming a precision agriculture specialist. What qualities do you have that will make you a good dairy princess? I always push to do my best in everything I do. I strive to do my best in every situation I am in. I want everyone to know they always have a voice in the ag industry and to speak up. I am used to speaking in front of large groups of people. I have done many demonstrations through my 4-H career. Also, being a member of the FFA senior parliamentary procedure team. Oral reasons through dairy judging in both FFA and 4-H. I also work at a grocery store so I am always talking to people about topics such as the dairy industry. I also enjoy talking to young kids about things such as the dairy industry. I am helping with preschool students and have for many years so it is nothing new talking about dairy to them. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important to me because it is a way of life for my family. Without the dairy industry, people would not have half the products we enjoy such as whipped topping, ice cream, cheese and sour cream. The dairy industry is important because without it bones and teeth would not be as strong. Dairy products play an important role in a healthy and balanced diet. Dairy products are rich sources of calcium which is easily absorbed by the body. Along with other nutrients present in dairy foods, such as protein, magnesium and phosphorus are essential to build and maintain strong bones. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? Farm safety. I would target younger kids telling them what could happen if they are not aware of their surroundings on the farm. I would be frank with them because safety is a big role on the farm. Farmers have so many regulations, inspections and guidelines. Because of this, farmers have semi-annual inspections to make sure we are up to code with everything There are many steps and precautions taken to make sure the average family has no concerns. People sometimes do not understand that samples are taken from each tank before it is collected. Then, another sample is taken when the tanker is taken to the plant before it can be unloaded. Those samples are tested to make sure milk is safe to be used. There are no antibiotics in milk. If there is, the load has to be dumped regardless of how many farms’ milk are in it. No matter what the season, farmers are out in the elements taking the best care of their dairy cows. We battle the elements so others can enjoy a bowl of ice cream and not worry about what is in it.

Morgan Kohl is the 63rd South Dakota Dairy Princess. Kohl is the 19-year-old daughter of Mike and Marcy Kohl and grew up on her family’s beef farm near Kranzburg, S.D.
Princess during last year’s Central Plains Dairy Expo in Sioux Falls, S.D. Kohl, the daughter of Mike and Marcy Kohl, grew up on her family’s beef farm near Kranzburg, S.D. “I developed a passion for dairy and wanted to share that passion with others,� Kohl said. “I had grown up seeing the South Dakota dairy princesses and looked up to them as role models, and knew that was something I wanted to run for someday.� Kohl is a freshman at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., where she is double majoring in agronomy and animal science. She is involved in Collegiate FFA, is a 4-H leader, is a member of the SDSU dairy cattle judging team and served as the superintendent of dairy cattle judging for the 2019 SDSU Little International. At 10 years old, Kohl began showing dairy cattle in 4-H. She then competed in dairy cattle judging through 4-H and FFA, and was a delegate for the South Dakota 4-H dairy judging team, which

Through working for MoDak Dairy, Kohl’s involvement in the dairy industry was solidiďƒžed. “I know I want to stay involved in the dairy industry throughout the future,â€? Kohl said. Kohl said while serving as dairy princess, the highlight of
the experience was interacting with consumers to answer their questions about how milk travels from the farm to the dining room table. “I especially enjoyed talking with all the youth,� Kohl said. “They are amazed by how dairy products get to their table. I really enjoyed classroom visits; that is where I was most interactive with youth.� Kohl said she was surprised some youth were not
aware that milk does not come from the grocery store shelf. “They didn’t know the process from the cow to the milk truck to the processer before it reaches their table,â€? she said. â€œâ€Ś One child even questioned if chocolate milk and white milk were as healthy as one another. ConƟnued from KOHL | Page 4 to interact with consumers at events such as the Sioux Empire Fair, the South Dakota State Fair and a dairymen golf tournament. “There were people from all over – farm people, city people – and just hearing what everyone had to say about dairy and answering their questions,” Kohl said of why she enjoyed these events. Kohl was also able to attend WDE as a representative for South Dakota, made farm visits across the state and was a guest at the grand opening of the Stensland Family Farms Ice Cream and Country Store
in Sioux Falls, S.D. “At their store kick-off event, I spoke and was able to read to the children in attendance as well as talk to them about dairy,” Kohl said. While juggling her full-time employment at MoDak Dairy during the summer months as well as being a college student was challenging at times, Kohl said serving as dairy princess was a worthwhile experience. “It was really an eyeopening experience to see all the people’s different views on dairy and how some people aren’t very knowledgeable

Consumers can’t get the key nutrients and same natural ingredients that is found in milk with things such as almond and coconut
beverages.” After giving up her crown later this year, Kohl will continue to serve the dairy industry as a South Dakota Dairy Ambassador. She was chosen as one of ve ambassadors by Midwest Dairy.
Developing a livestock, feed inventory By Richard Halopka

Winter weather has produced snow and cold, and the stored feed is going faster than we anticipated. “What can I do?” You need to develop an inventory of your livestock and the stored feed you have on hand. I will walk through an example; it will be a bit involved and will require you as a manager to calculate your livestock feed requirements and an inventory of your feed. This will be based on a 50 cow dairy herd with young stock. I have grouped the animals into three groups. We will calculate feed requirement from March 1 until June 1 (90 days). Generally, livestock will require about 2 percent dry matter (DM) forage per their body weight per day. Here we go: – 50 cows @ 1300 pounds x .02 = 1300 pounds DM per day x 90 days = 117,000 pounds DM forage. – 25 heifers @ 750 pounds x .02 = 375 pounds DM per day x 90 days = 33,750 pounds of DM forage. – 25 heifers @ 350 pounds x .02 = 175 pounds DM per day x 90 days = 15,750 pounds of DM forage. – Now add the 3 together 117,000 + 33,750 + 15,750 = 166,500 pounds/2000 = 83.25 tons DM forage needed to feed the herd for 90 days, now round up to 84 tons DM forage. Next, we need to take an inventory of your stored feed. It must be converted to DM to keep on a level playing eld. So if you have haylage, corn silage, or baled hay we’ll convert to DM tons. Stored feed on hand on March 1: – Haylage @ 40 percent DM, 15 feet in a 20 x 60 silo, corn silage @ 35 percent DM, 20 feet in a 16 x 60 silo, 10 1,000 pound bales of dry hay @ 85 percent DM. Next using table 1 of Feed Inventory published on the webpage of the Center for Dairy Protability, follow calculation in chart 1, silo DM full – feedout DM = DM inventory. – A 20 x 60 silo holds 152 ton DM – 105 ton DM feed out = 47 ton DM haylage in inventory. Next, 16 x60 holds 97 ton DM – 57 ton DM feed out = 40 ton DM corn silage in inventory. Baled hay, 10,000 pounds x 0.85 = 8,500 pounds DM/2000 = 4.25 DM ton of hay. Add the inventory together. – 47 + 40 + 4.25 = 91.25: We could round down to 91 DM ton of forage in inventory. – Now you will have about a 10% feeding loss, reduce DM inventory 91 DM ton x .90 = 81.9, round up to 82 DM ton forage for your inventory. – Now subtract your livestock estimate from your feed inventory: 82 DM ton inventory – 84 DM ton livestock requirement = -2 DM ton inventory. This is extremely close to zero. So what are some options you as a farm manager could consider? 1. Purchase some additional forage to stretch diets (example lower quality hay for older heifers). 2. Look at some grain options to stretch forages (soyhulls or other brous grains). 3. Do nothing, hope we have enough and hope for an early spring. 4. Just wait and purchase when we run out. 5. Sell some livestock (maybe have some cows you can move or extra heifers). Waiting or doing nothing is asking for trouble. If you know on March 1 you may need a little forage you have some time to locate forages or make ration changes to stretch your forage supply. Work with nutritionist to provide adequate energy and protein for your producing and growing heifers. Shorting these two groups of livestock will not provide positive results. Vernon County Parents: Jason and Heidi Fremstad, Ashley and Ken Kishman Siblings: Grace, Hannah and Ellie Fremstad, Lauren and Gavin Kishman What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I’m involved in FFA, 4-H, and the junior Holstein and junior Jersey associations. I’m the president of my FFA chapter. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I’m involved so I can help get others involved. There aren’t many kids in the dairy world any more, and I hope maybe by being involved in these clubs and organizations I can help push that interest in the dairy industry. The junior breed organizations are my favorite because I am able to meet and do things with people who have similar interests as me. I’m more focused on the cow and genetics aspect. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Going to the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention is one of my favorite experiences. I enjoy seeing friends I haven’t seen in a while and spending time socializing with them and learning. What’s your favorite social media? Facebook. Pretty much everyone uses Facebook, and I like to see what people post about various cow shows and sales, and the animals people are working with on their farms. It’s an easy way to market your genetics. What are your career aspirations? I plan to t cattle for a maybe 10 or 15 years, and then if the show world still exists, start and build my own herd of high-type cows. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? The key

They look up to older kids. I want to be a role model and set a good example. Who do you look up to? I look up to my dad. He’s taught me a lot about cows. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I wrestle.
Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I milk, feed, clean and whatever needs to be done. I also work at a heifer farm, helping my grandpa with chores there. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I’d change the way people view the dairy industry. People say we don’t care for our cows, but I’d like to teach them and show them that we take better care of the animals than we probably do of ourselves. No matter what the conditions are, we are taking care of the cattle. People don’t see that aspect.

he was wondering if it would even be worth it to rebuild if he was only going to milk for 10 more years,” Sam said. “But it was worth it because I’m here and enjoying it.” Sam’s goal is to take over the farm in the next four years. “I enjoy farming a lot,” Sam said. “There’s a lot of different things to do on the farm. I enjoy eldwork, milking cows and caring for calves.” He is also becoming more involved with the dairy’s operational decisions and has re-

In 2009, Dairy Star spoke with the Hopfer children for our Kids Corner feature. We talked to Sam Hopfer, now 19, about what he and his sisters, Abigail, Grace and Anna, are up to 10 years later. LAKE HENRY, Minn. – At 9 years old, Sam knew he wanted to be a farmer. Last spring, Sam graduated from Paynesville High School and began farming immediately. He works for his parents, Pete and Vicki Hopfer, on their 63cow and 170-acre dairy farm near Lake Henry, Minn. “I loved doing chores with Dad everyday,” said Sam about his childhood. “There was never a dull moment, and I just want to carry it on.” Sam’s oldest sister, Abigail, 24, graduated college last year and works in a hospital in Duluth, Minn. The next in line is Grace, 22, who is currently working two jobs and will nish college next year. Her career goal is also the same as it was 10 years ago; she hopes to be a biology teacher. Sam’s younger sister, Anna, 17, is a junior at Paynesville High School and helps

cently been selecting Jerseys to breed for increased components. When Sam’s not working on the farm, he enjoys playing amateur baseball in town or shooting pool. He also likes to spend summer days on the lake and winter days downhill skiing near the Twin Cities. A lot of things have changed in 10 years, but Sam’s dream job has remained the same. Now that Sam has grown up, he is living his dream of being a farmer.

DAIRY CALENDAR The 2019 Pasture Walk Season for the Great River Graziers and Kickapoo Grazing Initiative will start with a timely Overwintering Cattle pasture walk on Tuesday, March 26, 10:30 a.m. at the Christopher Baird farm north of Fairview, Crawford County. Christopher will talk about general concerns for overwintering your herd as well as more specic areas of mud management and feed storage and delivery, as well as what is necessary vs. what is ideal for bedding and shelter for different ages of animals and stages of lactation. He also would like to review success/failure of waterers. While Christopher is a dairy grazer, many of these issues will mirror concerns of beef and non-cattle grazers as well. Cynthia Olmstead, KGI Project Director, is coordinating the schedule this year with the help of UW-Extension agent Adam Hady (Richland/Crawford Counties) and Crawford NRCS Grazing agent Jacob Hawes. Topics for the 2019 Dairy Beef Short Course will focus on how dairy beef bull calves should be viewed as more than a by-product of the industry. As dairy and beef producers continue to experience economic struggles, increasing the value of bull calves can add value for dairymen, feeders and processors. The short course is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26 in rooms 1 and 2 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It is in conjunction with the Central Plains Dairy Expo. While parking and entry to the dairy Expo is free, there is a $20 registration fee to attend the Dairy Beef Short Course. The fee includes educational materials, refreshments and lunch.

The foundation of the registered portion of this herd includes selections from the Holmgren and Schoon herds, as well as other top regional programs. The herd was most recently classified in 2018 with several VG cows as well as the Gross’s Matriarch 91 point excellent cow. This herd has been on test for over 40 years with current records indicating a herd average of 2X 23,000 pounds milk, exceptional 4.7% 1080 fat and very good 3.4% 793 protein. Records to 35,000 milk and over 1200 fat. No TMR in use. Somatic cell count averages 160,000. Cows are milked in a tie-stall facility. This herd has been exclusively artificially bred for over 50 years using leading TPI and NM sires; including, but not limited to: Mogul, Shamrock, King Boy, Big Royal, McCutchen, Fuel, Dorman, and others.
