The campaign targets people who are confused or questioning the value of milk and its benets, Kadison said. Protein and eight other nutrients are lacking in American diets, she said. “This has major public health implications, especially for kids, for whom these nutrients are vitally important,” Kadison said. “We want consumers to be able to make informed choices and to do this, we must continue to take a proactive, aggressive approach and collaborate as an industry to make sure the truth is heard.” The initiative focused on setting the record straight on ve facts about milk: that milk is a nutrient powerhouse, not just for kids; milk contains a lot of good without the bad (such as excess calories or fat); milk is simple, especially when compared to non-dairy milks that can have more than 10 ingredients; milk is a quality protein source; and milk is a real, wholesome and local product from family farms across the nation. This January, dairy farmers and other industry enthusiasts banded together through social media to let others know the truth about milk, making #MilkTruth a trending topic. But this one-day blast to spread milk’s positive message is part of a bigger campaign – the Get Real Initiative, which was created by the Milk Processors Education Program (MilkPEP), a program that is funded by the nation’s milk companies and focused on sharing information with consumers along with increasing consumption of white and chocolate milk. “Competitors are making confusing claims, science is being misconstrued in the media, alarming headlines are taken out of context and activist groups are increasing their attacks against milk. The Get Real initiative was created to set the record straight about milk,” said Julia Kadison, CEO of MilkPEP, in an email.

Continued from MILK TRUTH | Page 2

“With the support of science, credible third-parties and the collective voice of thousands of farmers, milk companies and advocates across the country, this effort rallied the industry to make sure the truth about milk is heard,” Kadison said. One of the main ways to rally was through the social media blast. Along with using #MilkTruth, there were graphics available to milk advocates to show facts and the initiative’s ve messages. Two Minnesota dairy farmers involved in the promotion efforts were Lisa Reeck from Paynesville, Minn., and Rita Vander Kooi from Worthington, Minn. “It seems people have a growing number of questions about food and farming, and there’s an everincreasing amount of misinformation as well,” Reeck said about why she chose to be involved. “When I have an opportunity that’s ready-made like

“The goal is to get sitive inform positive information out ere about dairy there dairy.”

this, I think it’s especially important to take it – whether it’s in person or online – to talk about the real truth about milk and dairy. The goal is to get positive information out there about dairy.” Vander Kooi said research shows that people are getting more of their information from social media and the Internet. “… people oftentimes trust what they read on the Internet even more than what their pediatrician might tell them. As a mom who has a background in science and a love for animals I think I need to tell my story about how proud we are to take care of our animals and land. We rmly believe – and know that the research shows – that milk is so important for our bodies,” she said. Reeck likes the message about

how much protein there is in milk, especially when compared to alternatives. “When you’re drinking real dairy milk it’s a very natural and complete food. Even though it’s been around forever, dairy milk is still a really good choice,” she said. Milk having nine essential nutrients is one of Vander Kooi’s favorite dairy messages. “It is a wonderful choice for mom’s to make. That’s really the story we need to sell – that milk from a cow is so much more nutritious than a soy-based beverage or almondbased beverage,” she said. From the one-day social media blast, Vander Kooi made ve posts about milk on both her personal and blog Facebook and Twitter accounts. “I felt my posts were effective. They generated some shares and comments,” she said. “Seeing what was happening with me personally was one thing, but then to be part of this greater effort that starts a trend on search engines and things like that; I thought that was really neat to be a part of something that’s making a larger impact.” Kadison also said the oneday blast made an impact. Dairy advocates shared 6,700 pieces of #MilkTruth content, which made milk a trending conversation on Facebook and in Google Trends. The milk message reached millions of people. “We were able to address milk myths and information and engage in a strong consumer dialogue to help set the record straight,” Kadison said. Beyond the social media blast, Kadison said other avenues of reaching people, including advertising and search marketing, are being used to help spread the milk message. And it will only continue from there. Said Kadison, “The Get Real initiative is just the beginning of a more aggressive approach and one part of MilkPEP’s long-term strategy to impact consumer condence in milk’s fundamental goodness.”
