Keeping farm children safe

Building awareness to protect future generations from injury, fatality By Stacey Smart

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Heartwrenching headlines depicting tragic stories of kids whose lives ended in a ash or who endured gruesome injuries come across Barbara Lee’s desk every day. “I don’t use the word accident to describe any of these incidents because they could have been prevented,” said Lee, RN, PhD, director of the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety. “They occurred due to poor decisions made by those responsible. We don’t want to blame anybody, but at the same time, we have Barbara Lee to wake up and ask, National Children’s ‘What’s going on Center for Rural and here?’” Ag Health and Safety During her presentation, “What’s Killing Farm Kids? And How Can We Stop it?” at the sixth annual Agricultural Safety Connection seminar Jan. 7 in Stevens Point, Lee cited multiple incidents in which children of all ages were either killed or hurt on the farm. Numerous events involved tractors, which account

for more than half of youth fatalities on farms. In May 2017, a 3-year-old boy was crushed underneath the bucket of a skid steer being operated by his 5-year-old brother while the boys picked rocks with their mom and two brothers. This was not the rst death in the family. Another child was previously killed after being run over by a milk truck. On a different farm, another young child driving a skid steer was brutally injured when his leg got caught in the machine’s hydraulic arm. All the tissue from his thigh down was ripped off, leaving very little of his leg. The 6-year-old boy spent three months in the hospital and will face a lifetime of medical issues. In another instance, a 5-year-old girl was seriously injured after falling out of a tractor cab and being run over by the equipment, proving the point that even cabs are not safe. Sixty percent of the youth injured on the farm were not working at the time. Nearly all the children involved in nonworking fatalities were being supervised. “Farmers who have children must remember they are a parent rst and a farmer second,” Lee said. “If you’re in charge of the kids, you can’t be farming at the same time. You have to be focused on these kids, especially the little toddlers.” Few places are as wonderful or as dan-

Unfortunately, growing up on a farm means children are often placed in situations they are not mentally, or sometimes physically, equipped to handle. Tasking kids with work that falls outside of their mental capacity, for example, allowing children to operate equipment designed for adults, has been the cause of countless

deaths and injuries. In other situations, children are killed or injured as innocent bystanders or when playing unsupervised. Last November, in Indiana, 3-year-old and 5-year-old brothers playing outside unsupervised were run over and killed by a truck loaded with corn while their mother was inside tending to a younger child. Various factors contribute to increased risk of injury on the farm. More economically stable farms tend to take fewer risks. The more kids in the family, the higher the

When an urban parent leaves a child in a hot car, there are often legal ramications and the parent is held responsible. When it comes to parents’ rights versus child protection, are privileges given to agriculture? “There are all sorts of justications why children end up in potentially lifethreatening situations on the farm,” Lee said. “We need to question and challenge ag privileges. Why can farm parents put their kids in dangerous situations when most people cannot? Why do we allow it?” Lee said it is time to challenge unsafe traditions, such as children going for a tractor ride with Dad or Grandpa. In the ad campaign, Keep Kids Away from Tractors, one ad featured the headline, ‘It’s easier to bury a tradition than a child.’ “One of the biggest risks you can take is letting a child ride on a tractor fender,” Lee said. “It’s like asking for a fatality. If you see a neighbor doing this, call that person up and share your concern.” Reporting negligent or unsafe activities can be uncomfortable; however, it could save a child’s life. Lee predicts the industry will see more legal recourse taken for farm accidents involving children as parents and other adults are held accountable. In some cases, a review of the fatality by the district attorney may occur, and the incident could be charged as involuntary manslaughter or child neglect. “If there are consequences, things usually get better,” Lee said. “People pay attention and start changing their practices.” When a 4-year-old in Pennsylvania died in a feed grinder, his father was charged with involuntary manslaughter. The dad had told his son to climb up into the feed grinder to open the window. The father walked away and forgot the boy was

inside and turned the machine on, resulting in his son’s death. The man received a $150 ne and 50 hours of community service in which he was required to speak on farm safety. “We need to do the right thing for these kids,” Lee said. “Legal recourse is going to change the culture and raise awareness. Proper education and training are also important.” Lee recommends planning ahead and having mutually agreed upon decisions regarding children’s roles on the farm. “You cannot treat children as little adults,” Lee said. “You must understand child development and then match them with proper tasks on the farm.” The website, http://www.cultivatesafety.org, contains a resource library lled with tools that can foster a culture of safety around kids who work and play on farms. The agricultural youth guidelines found here help farmers match children with tasks appropriate for their age. Lee said following these guidelines has proven to reduce the number of injuries by half. “The farm is like a huge playground that requires physical separation of kids from the hazards,” Lee said. “There are many things proven to prevent children from getting hurt on the farm, such as fences around play areas and various communication and supervision devices.” Placing children in harm’s way is a decision that can result in devastating consequences. Avoid taking chances with a child’s life. Rethink having a toddler ride along on a tractor or allowing an 8-year-old to operate a skid steer. Do not leave youngsters unattended for any amount of time. It only takes a second for the unthinkable to happen. “We all have some role in helping save the next generation of farm kids,” Lee said.

Extracting health benets from heat detection system

Case capitalizes on rumination monitoring By Stacey Smart

JANESVILLE, Wis. – Steve Case no longer worries about overlooking a sick cow. Even under-the-weather animals showing no symptoms are on his radar. Case said this is because he uses a real-time, internet-based heat detection system that monitors both estrus and rumination. “The system tracks exactly what every cow did in regards to rumination,” Steve said. “It’s amazing.” L o cated near Janesville, Pineview Dairy is run by Steve Case and Steve Case his wife, Liz, and son, Craig. The Cases’ grandson, Tyler, also helps on the farm. The Cases milk 150 cows averaging 85 pounds Craig Case of milk per cow and farm around 400 acres. Craig, Liz and Tyler do most of the milking on this family farm, while Steve handles all the breeding and cleaning as well as the feeding with help from Liz. Craig is in charge of herd management. The Cases began using a heat detection system – Heatime® Pro+ – 12 years ago and upgraded to the latest version of that system

in July 2019. “The new version is phenomenal over the older one,” Steve said. “It monitors rumination by tracking cud chewing for each cow which helps us stay on top of health issues. The old system did not do this.” All lactating and dry cows as well as breeding-age heifers are on the system, and each animal wears an RFID collar. Operating via radio-controlled frequencies, the wireless system monitors cattle continuously. Unlike the previous version which only read RFID tags as cows entered the parlor, the new version reads nonstop, providing updates every two hours. Buildings and distance do not block the system from doing its job, Steve said. It reads the Cases’ heifers located 1,000 feet from the radio frequency boxes which are installed in the freestall barn and outside the milking parlor. “It’s very accurate,” Steve said. By monitoring the activity level of cud chewing, the system can expose animals that might need medical attention. Suspect cows are agged immediately – oftentimes before symptoms appear which has alerted Steve and Craig to issues numerous times, allowing for proactive diagnosis. “It doesn’t miss a thing,” Steve said. “If a cow’s not healthy, you’re going to know.” An animal experiencing a big drop in rumination will show up as an alert and is then checked over by Steve or Craig. The alerts have helped the Cases catch things like DAs, pneumonia and ketosis in a timely fashion. “The health benets of this system are enormous,” Steve said. “It denitely saves us money by catching sick cows I might not have otherwise caught or would not have noticed as quick-

But not anymore; I trust it.” The system is in constant communication, updating the user on cows to breed and cows with lowered rumination. With the ability to access data anywhere at any time, Craig uses the system app on his cell phone to view information and informs Steve of any alerts. A cow who has stopped chewing her cud for an abnormal period of time will trigger an alert. An alert indicates a cow is in distress. Steve will then go check on that particular cow or cows. “If a cow’s rumination drops off, she could have a fever or be coming into heat,” Steve said. “Nine out of 10 times though, it’s because a cow is calving, and this allows us to act quick. We’ve noticed rumination completely drops off 24 hours before calving.”

Craig uses the mobile app every morning to check on prefresh cows and looks at the freshcow report often, keeping a close eye on cows that might be ketonic. If an animal’s health index drops, he will use ketone strips to test her for ketosis. “Fresh cows are the most important group of cows on the farm,” Craig said. “If you get fresh animals through the transition period, it’s smooth sailing after that. The system has been a big help in this area.” The Cases use a double ovsynch breeding program on their cows, incorporating a 70day voluntary wait period. Steve said they have had a lot of success doing Double Ovsynch over the past year, achieving a conception rate of 33.9%. Cows that do not get pregnant after the rst round of double ovsynch are then moved to a regular ovsynch program. In both situations, the Cases also rely on their heat detection system, using it in conjunction

with their ovsynch programs. “It nds heat immediately,” Steve said. “I wouldn’t be without it. We rely on this system every day, and if the internet goes down, you feel lost. It was out for three days recently, and I didn’t know how we’d survive.” Steve and Craig closely monitor charts and graphs highlighting animal health and heat activity. Rumination averages can be viewed from different levels – whole herd to group to individual. The system provides an in-depth look at animals individually, allowing the user to closely track each cow’s rumination status. It also shows which cows are ready for breeding. “This state-of-the-art system is awesome and is a tool everyone should have on their dairy farm,” Steve said. “It’s like your hired hand, and any size herd can benet from using it. I think it’s the best money a farmer could spend.”

Hall gives outlook on industry

CALMAR, Iowa – Fred Hall, Iowa State University dairy specialist from northwest Iowa, gave a presentation about the dairy outlook Jan. 21 during the Iowa Dairy Days 2020 in Calmar. “We have to understand dairy exports, demand, production, consumption and what’s in storage,” Hall said. “They all play an important role in establishing price.” Exports Hall said for the rst 11 months of 2019, 14.6% of

the U.S. dairy production was exported. That ts in with the average within the last ve years, which stood at 14.7%. Within the last two months, it has been 15.8%, he said. “More and more exports are huge,” Hall said. “If you listen to the news, you would think we’re not exporting anything. USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) didn’t really move the market a lot that day.” According to November 2019 reports, Mexico continues to be the No. 1 importer of U.S. dairy products, buying $124.3 million dollars worth. This number did not change from one year prior; however, Southeast Asia jumped 57% to $96.5 million from 2018 to 2019 in its U.S. dairy products imports. Similarly, South America increased 73% in one year to $40.7 million. China also increased its U.S. dairy imports by 16% from 2018 to

2019. “Would anyone have bet on that?” Hall said. “Their dairies are not growing rapidly for the demand from their consumers. We need to try to increase (their imports even) more.” The product being exported the most is milk powders at 80%. “We’re not big users of powders in this country,” Hall said. However, the United States must also import a small amount of dairy to keep good trade relationships. Most of the imports are butter. “There’s a perception that Irish butter is super high quality and that product is really increasing,” Hall said. The U.S. butter price was around $2, while world markets were at about $1.60. “Right now, a large percentage of butter being created in this country is churned from imported butterfat,” Hall said. “If we can buy it cheap enough, churn it, put it in storage and sell it at the U.S. price, that’s good business for the processors.” Consumption While exports are important, so is consumption. “What really moves product out of the supply line is consumption here in the United States,” Hall said. Restaurants are a big part of dairy product consumption. “When I grew up, every meal was eaten at home,” Hall said. “That’s not the norm today.” Fluid milk sales have been in steady decline since the 1970s when soft drinks became the No. 1 beverage purchased. In 2017, bottled water took over the top spot. “We always hear it’s nut juice that’s the problem,” Hall said about milk’s beverage competition. “It’s a pretty small chunk of the pie. It’s not as big of an issue for us as we want to believe.” Despite this decline in uid milk demand, the United States per capita consumption of butter, yogurt, American cheese and other cheeses has increased from about 20 pounds in the 1970s to about 60 pounds now. Yogurt and other cheeses have been big drivers for this. “We’re a huge manufacturer of mozzarella,” Hall said. Storage The U.S. cheese stocks have been down in 2019, and cheddar cheese price is over $2, the highest it has been since about 2014. As of November 2019, U.S. butter stocks were at the lowest they have been in 2019. Production The country’s herd size is stabilizing and production in the United States has increased just under 1% in 2019. In the rst three quarters of 2019, most of the decrease in milk production happened in the Southeast. “Does that mean uid plants were shuttered?” Hall said. “No, they put milk on wheels and brought it from the Northeast, Michigan or Texas.” The biggest growth in the United States came from western states, especially Texas at a 7.03% increase in milk production. Within the Upper Midwest, these states saw production increases: South Dakota and Michigan both at 2.52%, Minnesota at 1.13%, Wisconsin at 0.55% and Iowa at 0.51%. Illinois decreased production by 8.4% as did North Dakota at 2.38%. “Having a place to process is important,” Hall said. U.S. dairy cow culling was up in December, according to the Agriculture Department’s latest Livestock Slaughter report. An estimated 265,400 head were sent to slaughter under federal inspection, up 9,300 head from November and 4,200 or 1.6% above December 2018. The 12-month cull count stands at 3.2 million head, up 71,200 head or 2.3% from a year ago. Forecast Hall said Class III milk price is driven by cheese, protein, whey and butter. “As a rule of thumb, 10 times the average price of CME blocks and barrels will be the Class III price,” Hall said. Positive forecast factors include a slowing milk production, declining stocks, strong domestic demand and trade deals, Hall said. Negative factors include trade negotiations, slowing economies, a possible U.S. recession and better heifers which means more milk on the market and more need for quality feed. Hall said predictions for half all-milk price for the rst half of 2020 is near $20 and the second half is well over $20. The 2020 average price could be $1.30 over 2019. “That could be 50 cents off depending on spring ush,” Hall said. This year’s weather does not look promising, as Hall said 2020 could look a lot like 2019. “If you owned a tractor and ground, you know what that was like,” he said. “Going into the fall 2019, we didn’t have the moisture prole we have now. If we get a lot of snow and a wet spring, we will be dealing with a lot of what we did last year.” Bankers are also a little hesitant for the year ahead. “They’re telling us we have to improve some balance sheets,” Hall said.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I’m our FFA chapter president and the Region 1 student advisor. I’m also our 4-H club vice president and East Ottertail 4-H federation president. I’m also part of our county’s dairy bowl team. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? I’m involved in these activities because they teach good leadership and time management skills. They are all fun, but my favorite would have to be FFA. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My favorite experience would be planning our chapter cattle show; from organizing it to seeing other members from across the state take part in the show. What is your favorite social media? Snapchat, because it’s easy to talk with friends from around the country that I meet at 4-H and FFA events along with family. What are your career aspirations? To either stay home and expand our dairy farm, or go into agricultural education. What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? Time management and soft skills, and organizing and preparing for events.
