Sticha happy with decision to farm
Dairying was not her rst career choice By Krista Kuzma

NEW PRAGUE, Minn. – Ten years ago, Amanda Sticha had no plans of returning to her family’s dairy or working on a farm. While she liked the life, she did not think it was for her. As time passed, Sticha slowly realized where her heart belonged. “I felt most comfortable on the farm with my family,” she said. Now the 28-year-old works full time on Happy Holstein Dairy with her parents, LouAnn and Randy Wagner, her husband, Travis, and her sister, Megan Pieper. They milk 300 cows near New Prague. Despite wanting a different career path as an 18-year-old, Sticha managed to include dairy in many aspects of her life at the time. A story in a February 2010 Dairy Star issue highlighted how Sticha invited seven of her friends and basketball teammates for a weekend of chores at her family’s farm. “I was excited because most of those girls hadn’t been to a farm,” said LouAnn Wagner in the 2010 story. “They don’t have any idea where their food and milk comes from, so it was good for them to see it doesn’t just come from the grocery store.” Sticha said that was not the only occasion someone showed up to help with chores on the weekend. “I came home a lot during college, so I would always bring one of my friends home with me to show them what we do on the farm,” she said. “I like showing others where their milk comes from.” In her speech class, Sticha also used the opportunity to share the skills she gained from growing up on a dairy. These skills transferred to the basketball court. During all four years of college, Sticha played guard for the St. Cloud State University Huskies. “I wasn’t the most talented player,

The farm also taught her teamwork, an important part of basketball. “If you’re not there to do your share, it slows everyone down,” Sticha said. Of course, daily chores also developed Sticha’s discipline and responsibility. “My parents did a good job teaching us to work before play,” she said. “Sometimes my friends took the easy way out, but I have too much pride. I want to do a good job.” During college, Sticha had several job experiences, working in schools and hospitals among other places. She also
had a full-time coaching experience. “It wasn’t for me,” Sticha said. “They never felt right.” She knew her original plan had to change. After graduating in 2013, Sticha followed her heart back to the farm and has been working full time with her family ever since. In 2015, Travis joined the farm, allowing the couple to work side by side. “Every day I feel more and more justied in my decision (to become a dairy farmer),” Sticha said. “And now that I have a family, it’s even better.” The Stichas have two kids, Leah, 3, and Rhett, 1, and a third on the way.
Sticha takes care of all youngstock on the farm from newborn to breeding age. Last May, the farm purchased a pasteurizer for the calves. “It’s awesome,” Sticha said. “We had healthy calves before, but now they’re really healthy.” Along with calves gaining weight at a faster rate, the herd’s somatic cell count has dropped since the highest cows’ milk is used for feeding calves. This results in a lower SCC and a better milk check, Sticha said. “It has already paid for itself, and it’s

“I’m trying to teach them life lessons,� Sticha said. “Leah is proud to tell others that her cows make milk that she likes to drink. She’s so proud and that is so cool to see.� To Sticha, being with her family is the best part about her career path. “I love that I have my kids here, and they don’t have to go to daycare,� she said. “And I love that Mom and Dad are still a big part of the farm, and (I like) working with Travis too.� Looking back to where she was 10 years ago, Sticha is glad her original plans did not pan out. It makes her happy to be working with her family and back on the farm.

Farm succession takes a team

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Farm succession and transition planning entails elements ranging from estate and tax laws to retirement planning. The University of Wisconsin Extension ofces from La Crosse, Vernon and Jackson counties hosted a Cultivating Your Farm’s Future workshop Jan. 29 in La Crosse to share succession planning information from people with expertise. “When you are trying to gure out your farm’s future, you need to ask yourself three questions,” said Ashley Olson, Vernon County Extension educator. “You need to know where you are now, where you want to be, and how you plan to get there. This is really the nuts and bolts of where to start.” Olson said it is important all stakeholders are on the same page and that incoming generations know the details of the farm operation. “This rst step of assessing where the farm is now might seem like common sense,” said Jamie Pfaff, Jackson County Extension agriculture educator. “Most producers have this in their mind already; they know how they are cash-owing, who is making what decisions, who is in that management role. But it is really critical when you are talking about

This is a good place to have that discussion with the successor generation. It sets up the next step of the planning process.” Pfaff said, that in building a framework for planning how to achieve your succession goals, it is important to discuss things such as who is going to take the lead in certain areas of the planning, how much capital will be invested, what the cash ow is like and what the budgets are. Pfaff also stressed the importance of setting a timeline to keep the parties working towards the goal. Jon Holthaus, a nancial advisor with the Holthaus Financial Group, of La Crosse, recommends building a team of professionals to help navigate the waters of farm succession and the nancial implications that go along with it. “If you have never watched football in your entire life, you aren’t going to be able to know what play you would need to call,” Holthaus said. “You’ve never seen any examples. You don’t know the

rules of the game. That’s where your professionals come in. They know the rules and can give you examples. That makes it easier for you to draw up your own play.” Holthaus said confusion often arises during farm succession planning when considering gifting versus inheriting. “Your farm is your retirement plan,” he said. “Imagine if you told me you had worked in a factory for 50 years and plan to retire next month with a 401K plan. But, then you tell me you don’t plan to use that 401K. You want to transition it to the next generation. I’d have to say good luck having a healthy retirement. It is a tough situation, especially in farming, to be equity rich and cash poor. That is where most people stall in farm succession.” Holthaus said people hesitate to sell or transfer too much because of variables. “You need to strategize according to your retirement needs,” Holthaus said. “Is your farm your retirement? Do you need to sell to make your retirement lifestyle? If not, do you want to sell?”
Holthaus said there is no right or wrong answer; rather, the solution that works best to t each individual situation. With the variety in situations, Holthaus stressed the importance of having professionals in the area of estate taxes and laws working as part of the succession team. “There are pros and cons to every decision we make whether you gift the farm or have them inherit it,” Holthaus said. “Then from there you can work with professionals to gure out the best way to make it happen.” Dona Goede, Western Technical College farm business management instructor, echoed the thoughts of the other presenters about the importance of having a team when it comes to successful farm succession planning. “It really is about a team,” Goede said. “A farm business management instructor isn’t the nancial advisor or the lawyer. We aren’t necessarily the coach; we are kind of like the referee. We keep the game rolling and moving forward, check people on time limits. We ask the hard questions and get people going. Sometimes it is not a fun job, and sometimes it ends in arguments. But those are questions that need to be asked.” While the nancial aspect of farm transition is often at the front of people’s minds, Goede said farm planning is not all about money. “Sometimes it is just really hard for the older generation to give the responsibility, those management calls,” Goede said. “There are a lot of other things that need to be looked at.” Goede said determining what role each generation will play on the farm as the transfer happens is important for helping to make the transition easier for those involved. “Communication is huge,” she said. “It is with your lawyer, your banker, your FSA loan ofcer. They all have to be at the table but so does every single family member. Because if the non-farming siblings don’t know what is going on, guess who is going to cause the biggest issue when something happens because they don’t know what the plan is. If you, as the owner, explain to them your logic, it is better than the one who just inherited it trying to explain the logic. It is a lot better coming from the parents.” Goede encouraged the use of written goals when it comes taking the rst steps of succession planning. “Are the goals of each generation the same?” she said. “Those goals need to be discussed. What have you been telling the next generation? What are you telling your parents if you are the next generation? Are you communicating effectively and completely openly?”

South Dakota State University to offer Professional DVM Program in Veterinary Medicine with the University of Minnesota South Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota (U of M) announce the formation of a new collaborative Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine leading to a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM). Once students have completed their pre-veterinary requirements, the new program will allow admitted students to complete the rst two years of their veterinary medicine education at South Dakota State University and the nal two years at U of M’s College of Veterinary Medicine in St. Paul. The rst 20-student cohort is expected to begin classes on the SDSU campus in Brookings within the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department in August 2021. “This professional degree addresses the need for more veterinarians in South Dakota and adjoining states, particularly those who work with food animals,” says John Killefer, South Dakota Corn Endowed Dean of the SDSU College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. “I look forward to working with faculty at both universities to implement a veterinary medicine curriculum that will complement several existing academic programs and a robust research enterprise that already exist within the SDSU College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.” “The new program is approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education,” notes Dr. Laura Molgaard, Interim Dean of the U of M College of Veterinary Medicine, “which will monitor our progress. This permission to proceed is a testament to the outstanding work of faculty and staff on both campuses plus the investments both states are making.” The AVMA Council also approved an expansion of the U of M’s graduating class from 105 up

The new collaborative program will focus on rural practices and help to address a shortage of veterinarians, create additional opportunities for South Dakota students to pursue careers in veterinary medicine, and support the agriculture industry in the region. South Dakota students participating in the new program will pay tuition based on in-state rates, realizing an estimated savings of thousands of dollars per student for their veterinary education through a subsidy from the South Dakota legislature, according to Killefer. “I’m very excited to be back at SDSU to continue all the great work that has been done thus far to create this new collaborative veterinary program,” says Dr. Gary Gackstetter, director of the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine at SDSU. “I’m convinced we can make a positive difference in South Dakota agriculture and animal health by training those students interested in rural clinical practice.”

GUTTENBERG, Iowa – When kids who visit Harbaugh Haven Holsteins want to try their hand at the halter of a cow, Brianna Lucey has no problem handing over the rope of her favorite bovine, EmilyAnn, despite the cow’s large size. “I call her the babysitter,” Lucey said. “She’s a big cow. I’m 5’9” and my head is barely above her withers. She knows she can be stronger with me if I’m on the end of the halter, but if you put a little kid on there, she’s something else. She sees where they go and follows.” This docile demeanor is part of what makes this 6-year-old Holstein special to Lucey and her family who milk 22 cows on their dairy near Guttenberg. “Originally EmilyAnn was my uncle’s cow, but usually any cow I show becomes mine because they’re so spoiled,” Lucey said. “But she’s pretty close and dear to everyone’s heart.” Lucey farms together with her uncle and grandpa, Craig and Richard Harbaugh, while also attending school at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar where she is studying animal science and agricultural business. “I’ve been on the farm since I could walk,” Lucey said. During the school year, Lucey works for a nearby 300-cow dairy and travels
home on the weekend to help her family with chores. “EmilyAnn is always the rst one to greet you,” Lucey said. “You can yell at her to come into the barn, and she’s right there at the gate and will walk in like a dog. She’s been shown all her life.” Sired by Bradnick, Harbaugh Bradnick EmilyAnn was born Sept. 1, 2013. Her dam is a Jasper daughter scored Excellent-91. “I was always the Jersey girl in the family, but EmilyAnn clicked differently with me out of the heifer group at the time,” Lucey said. During the show season, Lucey works with show animals at least four days a week for one hour daily. When training EmilyAnn in her younger days, Lucey said EmilyAnn was a natural on the halter. “The only work I really had to do with her was keep her head up,” Lucey said. “She knew which leg to put back and how to keep her front feet square. I barely had to touch her back to get her to move over. She’s pretty easy to work with.” Because of this ease, Lucey chose EmilyAnn as her showmanship animal. “She liked being on the halter,” Lucey said. “She knew she was pretty. We were always in a rhythm when walking.” Even though EmilyAnn did not always earn rst in her classes, Lucey liked bringing her to shows. “You always have to have the one animal to have fun with no matter what,” Lucey said. “EmilyAnn was that cow for Turn to LUCEY | Page 9

ConƟnued from LUCEY | Page 8 me.” However, EmilyAnn always stood at the top part of her class because of her type. “I think she’s pretty close to the ideal powerhouse dairy cow,” Lucey said. “Just maybe a little more depth of rib and she’d be set to go.” Lucey also said EmilyAnn has a good udder along with strong feet and legs. Plus, she has good health traits including always settling on her rst or second service, and she has never had big issues with illness. At Harbaugh Haven Holsteins, Lucey works closely with Craig to analyze each cow and carefully select a mating based on that cow’s qualities. The pair emphasizes type, udder composite, and feet and legs. They also look at conception rate. “We breed a lot on type because I am still actively showing, and we’ve always liked the (high type) cows,” Lucey said. “But feet and legs are big to me. You want a cow that will last, but if she doesn’t have good feet and legs underneath her, a lot of things can go south in a hurry.” Pounds of milk is not a big factor for Lucey and Craig when choosing the right sire. “You get paid more in components anyway,” Lucey said. Lucey likes the genetics aspect of dairy farming. “I like watching the cows you’ve bred and the calves grow through their lifetime and watch your (herd’s) genetics expand,” she said. “You put in all this hard work just to hope you get a special animal. It’s always a goal to do better the

following year.” EmilyAnn is now on her fourth lactation after calving with her fourth calf and third daughter, Harbaugh Tattoo Esme, in November. Her rst two daughters – the rst sired by Reginald and the second by Aftershock – are now on other farms after Lucey’s family had a dispersal in 2017. Her third calf was a bull. “She’s been healthy,” Lucey said. “She’s pushing the milk.” Plus, she makes her presence known in the barn. “My uncle let’s her have her way,” Lucey said. “All cows have their own stalls, but if she came into a stall that’s not her own, she gets to stay and everyone works around her. She is queen bee.” Despite her good type, EmilyAnn is now a permanent barn cow, walking the show ring for the nal time the summer of 2017. “She is showing her age quite a bit,” Lucey said. But growing older only amplies her calm presence. “If I’m having a bad day, she’s the rst cow I go to,” Lucey said. “If she’s laying down, and I go up against her, she’ll wrap her head around me. It’s almost like she’s human in a way some days – she just knows what I need.” And when Lucey has visitors or a demonstration on the farm, she knows which cow she can trust. “If the kids want to see a big cow, I can let the kids be around her,” Lucey said. She calls in the babysitter, also known as her cow, EmilyAnn.

Get to know Hannah Hockerman of Westeld, Wisconsin
What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in the Westeld FFA, the Springeld Funrunners 4-H Club and the Wisconsin Holstein Association. I have participated in many events including judging, showing and career development events. I have also held many leadership roles by serving in ofce and helping youth with projects. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I am involved in these activities as it is a great way for me to meet new people and learn more about agriculture. My favorite organization to be a part of is the Wisconsin Holstein Association. Through WHA, I have met many people who I will be able to work with in the future. This year, I will also serve as a JAC for the Wisconsin Holstein Association. I am excited to dive into this new role and become more involved. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My favorite experiences in all of the events would be working with younger members in an organization. From youth in our 4-H club to younger kids in my high school, I enjoy teaching them about agriculture and its importance. What is your favorite social media? Instagram. I nd Instagram useful when connecting with friends from around the country. I can also advocate for agriculture by posting about weekly questions related to different topics and events. What are your career aspirations? After college I would love to become an agriculture teacher. I have had many experiences teaching youth and would

Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know. I am actually going to attend a technical school for my rst two years of college. I will attend Rock Valley College to play softball and receive my general classes before transferring to a four-year university to receive my degree.
Who do you look up to? My mother, Dawn Hockerman. My mom has attended college and now is employed within my family’s dairy. She has shown me the importance of hard work and that I can do anything I put my mind to. My mom serves as a role model by holding a strong
Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I am responsible for running calf chores. Some of these tasks include newborn calf care, feeding milk, vaccinations, bedding and record keeping. I also assist with
drying up cows, transportation of animals and heifer breeding. I am grateful for the role on my family’s farm as it has helped me diversify my dairy background. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? If I could change one thing in the world it would be the knowledge of consumers. I would use social media, news articles and face-toface communication to answer questions that consumers have about the production of their food. With consumers trusting farmers, they have more knowledge and trust in us to grow and produce their food.

It is cool being a part of that. Tell us about something you have recently learned in school. I am taking a birding class, and we recently dissected an owl pellet. What do you want to be when you grow up? I would like to be a nurse. What is your favorite dairy treat? Strawberry sundae. What do you like to do on the farm during the winter? I like to skate on the river behind our barn.

After school, I feed corn to the calves and then help milk and feed cows. Some nights I help Dad in the chicken barn. What is your favorite and least favorite chores? My favorite chore is helping Dad in the chicken barn because he always has donuts for me there. My least favorite chore is anything when it is super cold out because I hate being cold. I also like to help feed baby calves. What is your favorite and least favorite chores? My favorite chore is helping with newborn baby calves and naming them. The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team will host a ve-session webinar entitled “Eye on Employees,” from noon to 1 p.m. The webinars will address the main concerns that farm and more specically, dairy employers face. Hall said that this ve-part webinar series will take an in-depth look at the questions - how to hire and maintain farm employees. Each presenter will address a certain topic from noon to 1 p.m. on the dates listed below: – Feb. 26 - ISU Extension and Outreach Dairy Specialist Fred Hall will outline the importance of an employee handbook and give producers ideas on how to create a handbook for their dairy, as well as how to make it a part of their hiring process. – March 4 - Melissa O’Rourke will return and outline how employees are often misclassied and the consequences of doing so; plus, other employment pitfalls. Hall said that at the end of each webinar there will be time allowed for a question and answer session. Tough economic times in the agricultural sector can take a toll on farm families, with increased stress associated with nancial challenges often leading to difculties communicating and making effective decisions. To help Wisconsin farm couples learn about stress management techniques, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and University of WisconsinMadison Division of Extension are hosting a series of Farm Couples Weekend Workshops this winter. Roger Williams, a farm family communications consultant and DATCP Farm Center volunteer mediator, will facilitate the sessions. Extension educators from the local areas and Farm Center staff will be available to provide information about other Extension and Farm Center programs and services. These weekend workshops are designed to help farm couples: – Deal more effectively with stress – Learn about personality differences – Communicate more effectively with each other and other family members – Make plans for the future – Learn about helpful resources in the community, including UW-Extension and DATCP There is no cost to attend. Linda’s parents, Stanley and Geneva Diers, began registering cows and DHIA testing in the 60’s, developing many deep cow families still in the herd today.
