A relationship as sweet as sugar Charapata’s best friend is an 8-yearold Ayrshire By Stacey Smart

COLEMAN, Wis. – When Lily Charapata met Sugar, it was love at rst sight. The 3-dayold Ayrshire calf stole her heart at that moment and never gave it back. Growing up together, Sugar has always been a friend Charapata can count on. “Sugar has become such a huge part of my life that anyone who knows me also knows Sugar,” Charapata said. “She is truly a part of our family.” In 2012, when Charapata was 10 years old, she wrote an essay and applied for the Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Shayr-A-Heifer Program. To her

surprise, she was chosen as the recipient of a registered Ayrshire spring calf named Gherland Jethro Sugar. “Sugar has a very big personality and an entertaining attitude,” Charapata said. “She is a cow that is gentle with kids but is denitely the boss cow of the herd when it comes to feeding time. She’ll beat out the big Holsteins to the feed bunk, yet she’ll let a 4-year-old milk her or walk her around on a halter.” Charapata owns more than 20 registered Ayrshires and credits Sugar as her reason for getting involved with the breed. Charapata was the 2018 Wisconsin Ayrshire Queen and is a Wisconsin Ayrshire Juniors ofcer. “When Sugar was a calf, she lived in our backyard,” said Charapata, who did not grow up on a farm. “Raising Sugar was a family effort. She was my rst Ayrshire and one of my rst show calves. I cared for her ev-

Other than baled hay, we now use tower silos for all of our feed storage. We like the quality of feed that comes out of them - it is really good and we don’t have feed spoilage. It only takes two people to fill them, which helps in keeping a lower number of employees and saves money. As our feed storage will be grows in the future, we’re planning on adding another silo.”

She had her head up and was looking at everybody the whole time.” Sugar wore a graduation cap during the parade and was the one everyone wanted to take a picture with afterward. The friendly Ayrshire is a good sport and does not mind being the center of attention. Sugar will turn 9 years old April 10. And like every birthday in the past, Charapata will celebrate by making a birthday cake in Sugar’s honor to enjoy eating with her co-workers during morning milking. The day will also be commemorated with pictures of Charapata

and her beloved Sugar. When she was a calf, Charapata dressed Sugar up for every holiday, and at Christmas, Sugar can still be seen wearing a Santa hat. The white speckled cow means the world to Charapata and her family, and although Sugar’s production and reproduction are no longer at their peak, Charapata said she will never be put on a cull list. “Sugar will stay at the farm until the day she dies, even if it means retiring out in the dry cow pasture someday,” Charapata said. “Some kids are best friends with their dogs, but I never had a dog when I was growing up. Instead, Sugar was my best friend.” Charapata has made countless memories with her favorite cow and looks forward to spending many more years with Sugar.

Sauders redesign facilities to meet dairy needs

A farm of their own

ELROSA, Minn. – After years of renting a facility to milk cows, Luke and Rosanna Sauder nally have a farm to call their own. “We enjoy being on our own,” Luke Sauder said. “I’m pretty happy with how it all turned out.” The Sauders were renting a tiestall facility near Greenwald to milk their herd of 60 Jerseys. After 1.5 years, a farm site nally came up for sale in September 2019. The farm site included 20 acres, a house and out buildings, including one structure that was previously a tiestall barn. The location was perfect for the Sauders as it was just 2.5 miles west of Rosanna’s father’s farm site and near his farmland. But the site needed a lot of work to be ready to milk cows again. “I had an idea when we bought the place what we were going to do,” Sauder said. With help from friends and family, the Sauders set to work in October 2019 with hopes of moving their cattle to the farm by January 2020. “We drove back and forth for three months to do chores (at the rented facility),” Sauder said. “We were hoping for January but it kept getting pushed

At that point, they had spent months of designing, building and retrotting the existing structures into what Sauder envisioned for his dairy. The original tiestall was a headto-head stall design with scrape aisles behind the stalls wide enough for a skidloader. Although the original stalls had been removed, the center feed bunk

remained along with the cement oor. Working with the original structure and cement, Sauder poured more cement to build a holding area and swing-10 parallel milking parlor. The front of the original tiestall building was retrotted with the holding area and pit parlor. “I would have loved to have a walk-in parlor, but it didn’t work in this barn,” Sauder said. “I originally wanted to take this building down, but we made

this work.” Sauder purchased a used swing-10 herringbone parlor. The units that came with the parlor were outdated and could not be refurbished so Sauder improvised by purchasing newer detachers and designed a track roller to move units from side to side. “I hope to put the right swing arms Turn to SAUDERS| Page 7

The brisket rail in the parlor was designed out of 4-inch pipe and can be raised and lowered to release cows after milking. “The rail lowers and rests on the ground for the cows to step over after milking,” Sauder said. “The railing was designed for Jerseys and doesn’t work well for larger cows.” Sauder was hoping for a higher parlor oor, but the ceiling height of 7 feet did not leave him with many options. “I didn’t want to take too much height away, but I would’ve liked to have my holding pen slope more,” Sauder said. Despite the minor design aws, the parlor maximizes Sauder’s efciency. He can milk 66 cows in one hour by himself. Rosanna joins him for evening milkings. “I like that the parlor saves me time,” Sauder said. “Interacting with the cows is much nicer in a tiestall, but here, I’m trying to get my numbers higher and get a little more income. I have to do my work faster.” To house their herd, the Sauders worked with an existing loang shed that was originally spaced 60 feet from the tiestall barn. The previous owner connected the two buildings by constructing another pole building between the two and putting in stalls. Then, the loang barn was added onto on the far end. “He had 120 stalls in here, but it was all empty when I bought it,” Sauder said.

Today, the entire freestall barn is 40- by 200-feet and allows space for facing free stalls on the far end of the barn with 9-foot aisles. The center of the barn has facing free stalls with 13foot aisles with a feed bunk on the outside edge. Sauder feeds a TMR with a tractor. The feed lane is a retrot using the wall of the barn and a poured 20-inch curb on the inside of the barn. The inside oor was brought up a few inches off the oor. The far end of the barn had no stalls so Sauder designed and poured the stalls for sand bedding along with the center portion of the barn which had original stalls. “Sand bedding is more comfortable but cheaper too,” Sauder said. “We didn’t have to cement the entire bed, and we didn’t have to put mats in.” Sauder was able to reuse the free stalls from the previous owner by cutting them to the length of the stalls. Today, the barn is nished with 60 stalls but has room for 80 stalls. “It will be a year or two before we are full,” Sauder said. Almost one year after moving into the new facility, the herd is easing back into the level of milk production they had before the move. “We struggled to get production out of them, but I’m hoping we can move past where we were prior to the move,” Sauder said. Having a place to call their own has counterbalanced the challenges the Sauders had while transitioning to their new home. “It’s nicer here, not as labor intensive,” Sauder said. “It works for now. It was a cheap way to get started.”

On Feb. 18, the Youth Farm Safety webinar will feature a panel discussion moderated by Emily Krekelberg, Farm Safety & Health Extension Educator with University of Minnesota Extension. The panelists include Marsha Salzwedel with the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety, Jana Davidson with Progressive Agriculture Foundation, and Diane Rohlman with University of Iowa College of Public Health. They will cover various resources and programs available for families with young farmers. The March 4 discussion will focus on Livestock Safety. UMN Extension Cattle Production Extension Educator Joe Armstrong, DVM will discuss and demonstrate proper animal handling in both connement and pasture systems. The series will conclude on March 18 with a mental health topic; Emily Krekelberg will be conducting QPR Training. QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is a one-hour suicide prevention program that helps individuals learn the three steps anyone can take to help prevent suicide. Questions for employer: Tell us your favorite experience of Trista helping with chores. I like working with Trista because she listens and takes orders well. I am like a teacher outside of school that can provide a look at reality. I teach my boys no different than any of my employees. I let them do their thing, and then if anything needs correcting, we get it done.

Because I work on an organic dairy farm, we cannot administer any shots or medication. So when cattle have mastitis, we need to milk them in a separate bucket than the lines that go into the bulk tank.

What qualities does Trista have that benet the farm? Trista has a willingness to work, especially in not the most pleasant conditions/elements. Some other kids cannot handle the amount of crap or the weather, but Trista can.

When did you begin helping on the farm? I began helping on the farm in 2019 because my mother’s friend was the owner of the farm and said she needed some more help on their dairy farm. I became interested in dairy animals when I was encouraged by my FFA advisor to join the dairy judging team. That decision began my love for cows and dairy cattle. I was also an ofcer and wanted to pursue my dreams of eventually working with cattle and working on a farm. This was my rst experience ever working on a dairy farm, and I have loved it ever since.

Questions for the youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? Some of my responsibilities on the farm include milking cows, sanitizing the parlor and equipment, switching the pipes inside the

How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I balance school, extracurriculars and farm chores by preparing a month ahead. I do this to ensure I have enough time for

all of my extra activities. Some of the extracurricular activities that I participate in include: forensics, FFA, Fire on Ice Princess, working at the farm and working at a bar and grill. I am most active in FFA and serve as an ofcer. As an ofcer, I serve as chairman of numerous FFA activities such as Food For America, Breakfast on the Farm, Sixth Grade Safety Day, FFA Week, FFA Banquet, Walk to School Day, and Fourth Grade Conservation Day.

How has working on the farm shaped your character? It has taught me how to work hard and have determination/ dedication. It has also taught me how to care for animals, and I have learned a lot about feeding, safety, animal care and milking. Working on the farm has helped me nd the career pathway I want to pursue when I am older. Lastly, it has taught me not to give up when things get tough, and that when problems arise, I need to problem-solve to conquer those problems. What do you love most about farm life? What I love most about working on a dairy farm is that I can spend my time

with animals. Cattle have been a huge part of my life for the past three years. Now that I work on a dairy farm, I can pursue my passion for cattle by spending almost every day with them. Working on a farm has also helped me determine my career path. What is one thing that you have learned from working alongside your employer? One thing I have learned from working with my employer is that the work is never done. Managing a dairy farm can be difcult. Sometimes hard decisions have to be made. Paul has been willing to teach me anything I want to know about the farm. He trusts me with

new responsibilities and learning every aspect of the farm. What are your future plans? I plan to graduate high school in 2022 with 15 college credit agriscience classes. I then plan on attending college at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and earn a degree in dairy science. I plan to have my own dairy farm. I also have a passion for teaching others about agriculture and especially the dairy industry. I want everyone to be aware of how farmers really do care about their animals, treat them as humanely as possible and truly always want what is best for them.
