Iowa State Dairy Association and Midwest Dairy Association begin partnership
The Iowa State Dairy Association (ISDA) has voted to contract its operations to Midwest Dairy Association, effective May 1, 2014. ISDA is a membership organization working on policy and industry issues, and legislative priorities, while Midwest Dairy manages the dairy promotion checkoff for Iowa and nine other states. Under the agreement, Midwest

Consequently, Midwest Dairy has hired Sue Ann Claudon as director of industry relations for Midwest Dairy Association in Iowa, serving a dual role as ISDA executive director upon Bloomberg’s departure. Claudon was most recently with the United Sorghum checkoff program in Lubbock, Texas, and had previously served as general manager for Dairy Max, Inc., the dairy checkoff entity serving the southern U.S. She grew up on an Illinois dairy farm and graduated from the University of Illinois in animal science. Chris Freland, the industry relations manager in Iowa, will also serve both organizations. She has been with Midwest Dairy for more than four years. ISDA and Midwest Dairy already work closely through the Dairy Iowa initiative and on items such as issues management and dairy image communications. The new arrangement will allow both organizations to be more effective through better sharing of in-

Dairy will provide stafng and management for ISDA, tracking and segregating all ISDA costs to assure the checkoff exclusion for policy and legislative involvement is met. Midwest Dairy’s promotion activities will continue to be funded through its checkoff authority. The board of directors of each organization will continue to operate separately, with each setting its own agenda and program priorities. Midwest Dairy Association has similar arrangements with producer membership organizations in Nebraska and South Dakota.

The Meyers participated in an On-Farm Energy Audit through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) this spring.

They cut their electricity bill by 2025 percent since the audit and implementing the recommended changes. To them that was a signicant reduction. Nick is expecting his payback to be within less than one year. Improved energy efciency usually translates into increased savings of fuel and electricity. Items reviewed in the audit include tractor and implement maintenance, preventative maintenance, efcient uorescent lighting, plate coolers, ventilation, and more. For the Meyer’s farm, LED’s are an ongoing project. “As of right now, I’m extremely pleased,” remarked Nick, “The biggest selling point for me was the ability to run our fans at a slower speed over the winter to reduce humidity and get fresh air ow.” The EQIP On-Farm Energy Initiative enables the producer to identify ways to conserve energy on the farm through two types of Agricultural Energy Manage-
ment Plans (AgEMP) for headquarters and/or for landscape, also known as an on-farm energy audit (headquarters and/ or landscape); and by providing nancial and technical assistance to help the producer implement various measures and practices recommended in these on-farm energy audits. The On-Farm Energy Audit is a valuable tool that can help a producer understand how energy is used on a farm. It provides guidance that can help prioritize actions and plan equipment upgrades that improve energy efciency. What a producer can expect: 1. Initial interview with producer to gather information about the operation and explain the audit process. 2. Local data collector visits farm to verify and collect information about energy use. 3. Energy engineers complete a thorough data analysis. 4. Deliver an audit report with energy analysis and recommendations. 5. Follow up with producer to answer questions, review plan’s recommendations and discuss opportunities for implementation. Carver County Dairy Expo announces its program speakers for the Monday, February 17, 2014 event. The 22nd annual Expo will be held at Central High School in Norwood Young America.The one-day Dairy Expo will begin with registration at 9 a.m. and will feature educational speakers, trade show, catered lunch and door prizes for a $10 registration fee. Students are encouraged to attend for $5 and check with their Ag Ed instructor for extra credit opportunities. Mike Hutjens will deliver this year’s Keynote Address. Dr. Hutjens will also examine “Strategies with Today’s Feed and Milk Prices” during the break-out sessions. Jeff Weyers from Vi-COR will discuss troubleshooting options for mixed rations. Calves and their well-being will be highlighted by Extension Engineer, Kevin Janni with calf barn ventilation. Jeremy Schefers, DVM will present research on calf health, and Jim Salfer, Extension Educator, will speak about the cost of raising heifers. Alfalfa, grasses and cover crops will be looked at by Extension Educator Jim Paulson. Admission covers the cost of lunch, lecture proceedings and entry into several rafe drawings.
