A business in planters Johnson Seed provides services for every farmer BY KATELYN ASFELD Staﬀ writer

When it comes to planters, the guys at Johnson Seed and Ag Services know what to do – and they know what to do for every farmer, no matter the size. “We try to be a onestop shop for planters. We want to be able to sell anything and everything for a planter. The equipment is tailored to the customers for the customer,” Nick Hanson said. Hanson has been an employee of the dealership for two years. He works alongside employee Jason Schaefer and owner Peter Johnson. At the two locations, in Belgrade and Lake Lillian, the trio serves over 300 customers, and their clientele list continues to grow. They provide maintenance, inspection and repair for planters, as well as crop services such as scouting fields and meter inspection and services.

The dealership has been operational since April 2017, when Johnson and Schaefer merged businesses. Johnson began farming at his family’s farm in 2004 in Willmar and in 2008, he started a dealership in the Willmar area for Pioneer Seeds. In 2011, he started a Precision Planting dealership in Lake Lillian. A year later, Schaefer started his dealership, Schaefer’s Precision Planting, in Belgrade. “Once Jason and I started talking about our geographical differences and how we could utilize manpower to assist our growers, we started to realize that there was a benefit to having multiple people in different facilities,” Johnson said. Johnson and Schaefer then decided to merge their resources and Johnson bought Schaefer’s dealership. “The merging of the two dealerships has broadened our horizons a lot more to a network of dealers,” said Schaefer, noting the dealership’s

This year is their first time exhibiting at the Central Minnesota Farm Show and they are looking forward to meeting new people and making new connections. Additionally, they will have

Flight Manufacturing The leader in augers for agriculture and industry BY KATELYN ASFELD Staﬀ writer

Flight Manufacturing Corporation is a stateof-the-art company specializing in, you guessed it, manufacturing flighting. The company was founded in 1999, almost 20 years ago. They offer precision auger flighting for agricultural, material handling, utilities, food, mining and construction industries. There are three locations – two in Illinois and the other in Nebraska. “We offer edge-wound helicoid and sectional flighting,” said Marc Cain, general manager of Flight Manufacturing Corporation. Cain grew up on a farm where his interest in flightings first started. He loved to watch grain go up the auger during harvest time. Cain began working for the company right after high school and truly enjoys the family atmosphere within the company. “They are like family,” he said of his co-workers.

His work consists of a variety of things, but his favorite task is designing new products for customers. The primary products manufactured are sectional flighting and edge-wound helicoid flightings. Both are popular items amongst their customers, said Cain. Their flighting can be used for a multitude of applications including grain handling, feeder wagons, mixer wagons, augers, food handling, fertilizer, mining, underground boring, sludge removal, anchors, construction, snow blowers, post hole digging, material separators and salt spreaders. Edge-wound helicoid flighting is a type of flighting that is used for moving heavy and abrasive materials. This flighting is manufactured using a precision cold form process, from bar stock or coil in various thicknesses, diameter and pitch dimensions according to a customer’s specifications. Sectional flighting is made by cutting blanks, with high-speed plasma cutters, from plate metal and forming it into individual one-pitch segments of different thicknesses and diameters. The pitch segment is the distance between each section measured parallel to the shaft of the flighting. Bigger (up to 72 inches in diameter) and thicker flighting requests by customers have increased over the years. Their 42,000-square-foot facility is stocked with carbon steels and stainless steels in various grades and thicknesses. “We are bringing

back that thickness to the outer edge for longer wear-ability and less replacement,” Cain said. “The flighting wears fast on the outer edge, so a thicker flighting was needed.” Meeting the demands and providing quality products to customers is the company’s greatest challenge, however, they have proven to be up to that challenge. The business manufactures individual custom sizes as well as annual production quantities. “Our quality and lead time sets us apart from other businesses,” Cain said. “Based on quantity, we have the option to deliver our products with our own fleet of trucks.” The company plans to continue providing quality product at reasonable prices for their customers.

Building Bonds Litzaus look forward to meeting people at the farm show BY LAURA HINTZEN Staﬀ writer

Litzau Farm Drainage, Inc., located in Lake Lillian, will be attending the Central Minnesota Farm Show this year. This marks their fourth year at the event held on Feb. 27-March 1 at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud. “I remember finding something online a while back and knew it would be a good way to help grow the business and meet some new clientele,” said owner, Mike Litzau. “I am looking forward to socializing with people in my industry and meeting new customers.” Litzau Farm Drainage, Inc. has offered farm drainage services since 1972 in their 60- by-100-foot shop with their primary customers being farmers. Services provided include underground directional boring, septic systems, lagoons, water management, demolition and general excavating. “Last year we were the first ones in the world to plow in 24-inch dual,” Litzau said. Then in 2015, a directional boring section was added which includes bores from 4” to 24”, on-grade specializing, boring hdpe pipe, boring roads, electric line, waterline and geothermal. The most popular service offered is plowing in the ag tile. What sets Litzau Farm Drainage, Inc. apart from similar companies is that they travel to farmers’ fields on a daily basis. Litzau works with 18-20 employees. “We will put in the sevenday work week if necessary, where a lot of other people won’t,” Litzau said. “If someone calls, we will be there. We also run a full-time repair crew where a lot of companies can’t offer that.”

They can reconnect with friends and meet new ones.” New to this year’s show is Topics on the Hour. Each day, a vendor in the show will present on a topic in the Carlson room stage each hour. Each presenter will speak for 30 minutes and answer questions for 15 minutes. Topics on the Hour is free to attend and will be happening every hour Tuesday, Feb. 27 and Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday, March 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also new this year is afternoon cookies and milk on all three days (ticket required), Tuesday and Wednesday, 2-4 p.m. and Thursday 1-3 p.m., sponsored by Minnwest Bank. This year, monthly prize giveaways have been done on the farm show’s Facebook page to publicize the event further.

At one of the seminars, the controversial water quality and buffer zone subject will be presented. “We are bringing in the perspective of the farmer, the government agency and a law firm. There is a lot of misinformation out there about the buffer zone laws and how they actually affect the landowners and the farmers working on the farms,” Wegner said. The goal of the seminar is to clarify misconceptions and bring a greater understanding of buffer zone laws. The water quality and buffer zone panel will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 10:3011:45 a.m. and again at 1:30-2:45 p.m. Other free seminar topics presented include road safety with farm equipment presented by Dave Busse, commercial motor vehicle officer with the Minnesota State Patrol; market trends on equipment presented by Scott Steffes of Steffes Group, Inc.; and estate planning presented by Cathy Olson, senior business analyst with AgStar Financial Services, Gary Hachfeld, University of Minnesota

Extension Educator and Brian J Schoenbron, attorney with Stinson Leonard Street. Seminar topics are selected by the farm show volunteer committee. “Farming is an everchanging industry and we are working hard to meet the needs of agribusinesses and be a bridge between our agribusiness communities and the area business communities,” Wegner said.“We are all tied together.” For first-time attendees, Wegner suggests visiting the information booth, then the welcome table followed by visiting all of the vendors.
