Paying it forward Minnesota farmer helps a young dairyman get started By Jerry Nelson

TYLER, Minn. – Even though he did not grow up on a dairy, Kyle Moser always wanted to be a dairy farmer. “When I was a kid, I decorated my bedroom with all sorts of dairy related things,” Moser said. “It probably drove my parents crazy.” Moser’s parents, Brian and Marlys, grew up on dairy farms, but both of them chose off-farm careers. “One of my favorite things to do when I was growing up was go to my grandparents Leon and Ida Moser’s dairy farm and help them milk,” Moser said. After graduating from Russell Tyler Ruthton High School in 2005, Moser enrolled at Ridgewater College in Willmar. He graduated from Ridgewater in 2007 with a degree in dairy management. In 2006, Moser began to

work on the dairy farm that is owned by Roger Peters. The Peters operation is located a few miles south of Tyler. “I worked for Roger for nine years,” Moser said. “Roger is a great guy and a good friend.” As he worked for Peters, Moser began to slowly build up a small herd of Jersey cattle. “I really like Jerseys,” Moser said. “They have a good temperament and don’t eat much. They are very efcient.” In 2015, Moser decided to go out on his own with his 40 Jersey cows. “I was given the opportunity to rent and share the dairy facilities that are owned by Rich DeRuyter, located at Ruthton, Minnesota,” Moser said. “But I couldn’t nd another facility to rent after the three-year lease was up, so I had no choice but to sell my cows.” Moser retained ownership of his 40 young Jersey heifers and resumed his position working for Peters. Eventually Moser found a home for his herd not too far from him. Dale Swanson owns a dairy farm that is located a few miles southeast of the Peters

Moser has been milking his 40-cow herd on the farm since the last week of November. farm. “My dad, Howard, purchased this farm in 1966,” Swanson said. “In 1967, he built a double-4 milking parlor. This was one of the rst parlors in this region. He also installed an underground pipe to transport manure to longterm storage. He was the rst one in the state to do that.” After graduating from high school in 1976, Swanson enrolled at Ridgewater College where he earned a degree in

machine tool technology. He then took a job in Minneapolis. “I only lasted nine months in the city,” Swanson said. “I couldn’t stand all the rush, rush, rush, so I came home to farm with Dad.” In 1980, the Swansons upgraded to a double-8 milking parlor and added a 140-cow freestall barn. They eventually grew their operation to the point where they were milking 250 Holsteins. Swanson began to notice

the rst troubling symptoms in the mid-1980s. “I could tell that I was gradually becoming weaker,” Swanson said. “It got harder and harder to do ordinary things. Before long, climbing our 80-foot silo was completely out of the question. Dairy survives in strange year DMI reviews 2020, looks to 2021 checkoff plans By Danna Sabolik

CHICAGO – Dairy consumption, like most things, looked a little peculiar in 2020. In a news conference Dec. 17, Dairy Management Inc. leaders presented a national checkoff review of 2020 and a look ahead to 2021. Like many, the novel coronavirus pandemic considerably shifted DMI’s planner. “COVID-19 threw a lot into the promotion plan,” said Marilyn Hershey, Pennsylvania dairy farmer and DMI chair. “There were not many moments that went past until the whole plan we had in place for 2020 was shifted and redirected.” One of the main issues affecting dairy farmers early on in the pandemic was retail stores limiting milk sales. “(Producers) had milk to sell, … but stores were panicking,” Hershey said. “There was a lot of confusion across states and regions, and store managers needed to be let known milk is available.” Due to proactive producers and regional communication with store managers, a lot of those limitations were lifted. Hershey said the plan for 2021 reects the changes made in 2020. “We have a lot of positive things planned to highlight and promote the good work of farmers,” she said. DMI CEO Tom Gallagher shared available gures through September, stating both domestic sales and exports combined were up 1.2% for 2.7 million pounds of dairy products. “That’s something we probably wouldn’t have guessed in March,” Gallagher said. On their own, milk sales in America were down 1% in September, although Gallagher anticipated that number to be positive by the end of the year. “With exports, we were able to pivot on a dime, and I think the industry did an excellent job of adapting,” Gallagher said. In the early days of the pandemic, DMI began partnering with pizza companies in Japan, testing to see if contactless delivery would be successful. It was, and DMI was able to take that and excel domestically. “We did a lot of work with pizza, anticipating the struggle within the food service industry,” Gallagher said. “We had a promotional deal with Papa John’s and also with Dominos where we rewarded kids who missed their graduation.” Within the food service industry, the pressure was on to introduce new products. Working to keep schools offering dairy products as they closed down was a challenge as well. “We directed a lot of those resources to hunger issues and food banks,” Gallagher said. “I think this really helped; our losses would have been much worse.” To focus on Generation Z, DMI

entered the world of gaming in a partnership with YouTube personality, MrBeast Gaming. The player built a dairy farm world on the game Minecraft and hosted a virtual tour emphasizing sustainability on his YouTube channel. MrBeast Gaming hosted a 100-player building challenge, putting up $50,000 of his own money to the winner of the most sustainable virtual dairy. DMI president Barb O’Brien dove deeper on consumer trends and demand. “Coming through COVID-19, an unexpected trend was consumers placing more weight on social responsibility and environmental stewardship,” O’Brien said. “They care more about these things than taste even.” According to research conducted by Kearney Consulting in April, 50% of consumers said the pandemic made them more aware of the environment. In the same study, 58% of Americans were found to believe we should respond to climate change with the same urgency as we have responded to the pandemic. “We have got to earn consumer trust because those expectations are real,” O’Brien said. Gallagher agreed. “The beautiful part of the U.S. dairy industry is that we have the best sustainability story in the world, and we’re telling it,” he said. In 2019, the organization rolled out their Net Zero Initiative, encouraging farms of all sizes to meet industry climate and environmental goals. In the second year of that plan, large strides were made in partnerships with Nestlé and Starbucks, making it more accessible for farms of all sizes to adopt new technology and practices that are affordable. “Over the last few months, we’ve seen companies putting money behind dairy farmers’ efforts,” O’Brien said. “Environmental progress needs to make economic sense, and companies are starting to see dairy as an environmental solution.” As various companies diversify their menu to include non-dairy alternatives, O’Brien urged producers to not take it personally. “If a family of four has one person who is vegan, (the company) is not going to risk losing the business of the entire family because they are not meeting the needs of one individual,” O’Brien said. “This related to farmers and their proactivity on maintaining sustainable practices, putting themselves at the table. And, frankly, it’s worked.” Looking to 2021, DMI continues to highlight the noble work of America’s dairy producers. “We’re leaning into a continuation of a four-year framework, accumulating sales and positioning U.S. dairy as a vital part of the international food system,” O’Brien said. Plans to secure millennial parents and Generation Z as consumers are a priority, focusing on modern science backing nutrition and also environmental resources. “We also know the power of partnerships is as critical as ever,” O’Brien said. “We’re going to continue to work with them to tell dairy’s story, drive sales and promote dairy’s reputation.”

ConƟnued from MOSER | Page 2 causing his muscles to weaken. “The doctors at Mayo Clinic can’t even gure it out,” Swanson said. “All they know is it that it’s some sort of neuromuscular disorder. We know that it’s genetic because our daughter also has it. But she has it even worse.” Swanson and his wife, Brenda, have one child, Tashauna. “Operating the dairy got to be too much for me, so we exited the business in 2007,” Swanson said. “We then began to raise heifers for local dairy farmers, including for Roger Peters.” In March of 2019, Swanson was diagnosed with bladder cancer. “I’m being treated for my cancer with immunotherapy and am feeling really good,” Swanson said. “Kyle came over to help with chores when I got sick. I’ve known Kyle for about 10 years. I graduated from high school with his father.” Moser had noticed the unused milking parlor on the Swanson farm and had an idea. “It was about ve years ago when I rst asked Dale if I could lease his dairy facilities,” Moser said. Swanson agreed to the proposition. “I wasn’t quite ready to quit farming at that time,” Swanson said. “But after my cancer diagnosis, I knew it was time to throw in the towel and let Kyle have his dream.” Swanson and Moser came to an agreement that allows Moser to rent Swanson’s dairy facilities on a per head, per day basis. Moser will buy feed for his dairy herd from Swanson, paying on a monthly basis. Moser will also rent a skidloader and other essential equipment from Swanson. “Our agreement accomplishes three things,” Swanson said. “It keeps our buildings occupied and it lets us

Before Moser could move his cattle onto the Swanson farm, the milking parlor, which had sat unused for 13 years, had to be brought back to life. Moser also installed a neck rail in the parlor to make it a better t for his Jersey cows. “We had bedded our free stalls with sawdust, but Kyle wanted to switch them over to sand,” Swanson said. “We put an excavator attachment on the skidloader and used it to remove some

Swanson said that the most important part of his decision to help Moser was his deep desire to pay it forward. “My dad helped me get started on this farm and now it’s my turn to help Kyle,” Swanson said. “It has always been Kyle’s dream to milk cows. We are going to do everything that we can to make sure that Kyle makes a go of it.”

Peacock raising venture adds diversity to Iowa dairy farm By Sherry Newell Contributing Writer

LUXEMBURG, Iowa – There were new decorations added to the cow ornaments on the Mensen family Christmas tree this year. Even more unusual, there were new animals added to the family’s herd of Holstein cows on their farmstead near Luxemburg. The Mensens, Carl and Lisa, began raising peafowl,

which most people call peacocks, on their 75-cow dairy about a year ago. They purchased 35 birds rst, then bought two more ocks from people retiring from raising them. There are now more than 70 birds in the Mensen ock. The enterprise came about because of the guinea farm operated by their son, Matt, and his wife, Maria. The couple took over the guinea business from Maria’s family and were looking for a dependable supply of hatching eggs to supply the peafowl portion of their business. Most of the birds they sell are for ornamental purposes. Carl Mensen calls the pea-

Instead, she is the primary caretaker of two large pens of peafowl there. One pen, half the ock, carries the colors most people imagine when they

Lisa Mensen checks the feeds trough for the 70 peafowl on her dairy near Luxemburg, Iowa. Even when plenty of males are on hand, the beautiful tail feathers are lost in the fall after mating occurs, providing the decorations Lisa is featuring on her Christmas tree. The Mensens’ male birds are just now regrowing their feathers. The feathers are Lisa’s favorite part of the enterprise. “I love seeing their feathers in the summer,” she said. “They are so beautiful.” And although the chores she does with the birds are not as time-consuming as managing a dairy herd – feeding and watering, and periodically cleaning pens – they do require attention every day, and they can get sick. Catching them for any treatment requires a net. “They’re like cows,” Lisa said. “They get pneumonia and respiratory sicknesses very easily. And the challenge is the same, as we strive to improve production and fertility.” There is also the gathering of eggs each morning during the season. The Mensen birds, as they mature, will lay an egg every other day from May to September. After four years, they will lay between 10 and 30 eggs over the season. Eggs are delivered once a

week to Matt and Maria, who will hatch them. Each egg is valuable, but it depends on the color and hatch rate. A good hatch rate would be 80%. “They’re too valuable to eat,” said Carl of the eggs. The feed for the cows is not useful for the peafowl; the Mensens buy poultry feed locally. Sometimes the birds get treats like dog food, cat food and even things from Lisa’s father’s garden. Wood shavings are used on the oors of the birds’ building. It has heated water in winter, with the front opening covered in canvas with a door giving the birds access to roost outside as well as indoors. Peachicks require heat lamps for the rst six months. Peafowl can also present another challenge rarely presented by cows. “They have a very high-pitched screech,” Lisa said. “You don’t want to have your windows open at night during mating season.” While the bird business is a niche market, Carl said it will not come close to replacing the dairy. “It would take 35 to 40 peafowl to equal one cow,” he said.

Rob Young My wife, Miranda, and I have a daughter named Mia, 17. I own Young Milk Transport and live in Plainview, Minnesota. Tell us about your background. I grew up on a dairy farm milking cows with my 10 brothers and sisters. How did you get started in milk hauling? I started hauling milk for Freemont Creamery when I was 19 years old. I hauled canned milk from Amish farms for about 1.5 years. In 1991, I started driving for Gene Boetcher, who hauled for Plainview Milk Products, whom my brother, Richard, also drove for. I worked for him until 1995 when I bought one truck from him – the same truck I use today – and took over half the route. What is your daily routine? I get up at 12:30 a.m. and check out both my trucks. I start one up and usually get to my rst farm to start pumping milk from the bulk tank by 1 a.m. Between my two trucks, we pick up six loads of milk each day and deliver it to Plainview Milk Products. When I get home from hauling, I repair anything that may be broken and get the trucks ready for the next day such as greasing, oil changes and xing lights or tires. I try to go to bed by 5 p.m.

What do you enjoy most about being a milk hauler? I like interacting and talking with the farmers I haul for all throughout the year. We talk about spring planting, harvest and different issues that come up in the dairy world. I also enjoy seeing the plant workers and other haulers every day. What has been your most unique memory while hauling milk? The blizzard Feb. 23, 2019. I started the night earlier than usual at 11 p.m. It was not bad then, but by 1 a.m., the wind was blowing so hard I could not see the road and drifts were building. I got my truck stuck in the road. The nearby farmer who I was going to go pick up milk from tried to plow out the road for me, but he also got stuck on the way. So, I hunkered down in my truck until I was able to get out at about 10 a.m. It took us three days and a lot of extra help from employees, friends and farmers to get caught up. Three of my farmers had to dump milk. It was a very helpless feeling not being able to get to those farms. Tell us about how your occupation has changed since you started. I notice a lot more cow comfort and cow care. The farmers are very passionate about taking care of their cows. There are fewer farms than when I started out, but the farms are larger and so are the trucks and tanks. When I started hauling, we would get going at about 7 a.m. Now it seems trucks and farms are running at all hours of the day.

Tell us something about your job that most people do not know. There are no snow days, late starts or sick days. It is very similar to milking cows. It goes on seven days a week, 365 days a year. If our truck breaks down, we cannot take the day off. We have to rent another truck and keep hauling. What is your favorite dairy product and meal? My favorite dairy products are milk and vanilla ice cream. What do you do in your free time? I like to camp, play sand league volleyball, spend time with family and snowmobile.

Parents: Ed and Mary Warmkagathje Tell us your favorite experience of your son helping with chores. We have a lot of great memories of Ethan helping with our dairy chores through his years of growing up, but one of our favorite experiences is when Ethan asked to raise sheep for 4-H to show at the fair. To see the improvements he has made with himself over the years in caring for the sheep is heartwarming. The best is when he sits in the pen with his sheep every year, puts his forehead to the lamb and just makes a quiet connection. What qualities does your son have that benet the farm? Ethan is extremely organized and is very efcient when a job needs to be done. He has helped clean up the shed and organized all the tools that end up out of place on a daily basis. He is also great with speaking to our employees because he has taken Spanish for 12 years and has become quite uent in his speaking abilities. Student: Ethan Warmkagathje What are your responsibilities on the farm? My responsibilities on the farm include milking cows, feeding calves, hauling bales, bedding cattle, feeding steers corn and hay, testing corn during harvest time, lling the planter with seed in the spring, xing fences, implanting and de-licing cattle, chisel plowing, hauling corn and helping my parents whenever directed to do so. I also help test the milk when the milk tester comes once a month.

Working on the farm has helped me better appreciate the work farmers do. What do you love most about farm life? What I love most about farm life is that it gives me the opportunity to get outside and enjoy life. The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach dairy team will begin a quarterly webinar starting with “Managing and Feeding the Transition Doe” on Jan. 6, 2021, from noon to 1:15 p.m. This rst webinar will focus on managing and feeding the transition doe as dairy goat producers head into the freshening season. This webinar will provide strategies for improving herd health, feeding and overall management of the transitioning doe to optimize milk production, reduce metabolic disease and produce healthy kids. Veterinarian Vicky Lauer will give a presentation on pre and post fresh doe management, covering herd health concerns around the time of kidding. Lauer is a professional services veterinarian for Armor Animal Health, where she focuses on improving cattle and goat health through optimum management and prevention strategies. She works with multiple goat dairies and kid raisers throughout Wisconsin and has a small herd of registered Nubian dairy goats as well. Morgan Allen will discuss feeding and managing the transition doe, bridging nutrition from dry/pregnant to milking/not pregnant. Allen is a nutritionist with Big Gain Inc., where she focuses on dairy cattle and dairy goat nutrition. She also owns a small commercial dairy goat farm located in southeast Minnesota.
