A great time of year to be online

I’m trying something different this year. I’ve done the shopping mall and department store scenes for Christmas shopping and I’ve decided I can’t handle the crowds adding to the pressure of Herd Surng trying to nd the perfect gift. So this year, my husband and I decided we were going to do all our shopping from our couch. On Thanksgiving night, we had the kids tucked away in their beds and we curled up on the couch. Joe used his smartphone and I had my laptop. We were planning our shopping “trip” all day while eating turkey and stufng. He was going to shufe through the bargains on Amazon and I was going to pick up some clothing bargains for the kids on OldNavy.com. We decided it was a By Andrea Borgerding Online Editor much better idea to get all our shopping done in one night so we could relax and enjoy the Christmas season. This time of year is usually so busy for us; we were really looking forward to listening to Christmas music, sipping hot chocolate and baking cookies with the kids. After an hour and a half online, we felt really good with what we had accomplished. It helped that our boys had already picked out stuff that they wanted from toy catalogs and we already had ideas for our parents’ gifts. The next week, we received several large boxes with Amazon stickers plastered across the top. What a great feeling of accomplishment. Being online can mean several different things other than online shopping. Being online can also mean having a web presence to help visitors gather more information and become more educated. I commend all the dairy producers who are able to maintain a web presence through Facebook pages, send out tweets on their Twitter accounts or post photos on Instagram on a daily or weekly basis. I feel keeping in touch with each other and putting themselves out there can be Being B i online li can mean challenging and risky. But when several different things you are presented with so many other than online shopping. avenues of communicating, it is a wonderful opportunity to educate many consumers. My next project for the Dairy Star Web site is to start compiling a section of links to farms that have web sites. By doing this, I’m hoping to bring more dairy farms together in one place where everyone can visit and learn from each other. This section will be complimentary to our dairy blog section, which I already have compiled. If you, or someone you know has a dairy blog or a farm web site, please let me know. I will start visiting and adding links to the Dairy Star web site in the next month. If you would like to build a web site for your farm, please contact me. I’ve been designing web sites for businesses for the past couple years. I can help dairy producers have an online presence by developing their name and product on a website for consumers to visit. In the meantime, remember the reason for the season and don’t let being online consume your time. Online shopping can be fun and useful when enjoyed in moderation. I know I’ll be checking bargains off and on for the next two weeks but I’ll probably be doing it sitting on my couch next to the Christmas tree, sipping hot chocolate with my kids and listening to Christmas music.
