Area dairy producers assist Benton County operation after re By Charlie Comfort

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa – On Nov. 27, a re near Vinton destroyed a milking parlor and holding area owned by Birker Dairy. As a result of the re, 300 dairy cows were displaced and in need of a new facility to be housed at quickly. According to Ken Birker, majority owner of Birker Dairy, people began to step up and offer assistance after hearing of the re. “As soon as that word got out, people started showing up,” Birker said. “Everybody stepped up big time,” he added. By the time night had settled in, two Buchanan County farmers had agreed to let the dairy cows be housed at their facilities. Birker said that the despite the weather conditions, the cows were moved to Buchanan County in the wee morning hours on Monday. “It was miserable,” Birker said of moving the cows during the rain and wind. By the time dawn arrived Monday morning, the 300 dairy cows from Birker Dairy had found new temporary homes at the farms of Tim and Sharon Corkery and Jim Beatty. Both the Cork-
erys and Beatty had nished up their dairy operations just north of Independence in the spring of this year, meaning that they had dairy facilities on their farms that were not being utilized when the re at Birker Dairy happened. According to Jim Beatty, his son Travis received a phone call Sunday evening about the re at Birker Dairy and asked him if their facility could be used to house the cows. “I said ‘it’s a no brainer, you got to help them,’” Beatty said. “You’d want somebody to do that for you,” he also said. Beatty is housing 132 of the dairy cows, with the Corkerys housing the remaining. Sharon Corkery said that her husband Tim also received a call Sunday evening about the re. With their facility being open, Corkery said that she and her husband were more than willing to help. “Being as we had been in the dairy business, we knew how important it was to nd a place to get them milked, get them a home until they rebuild,” Sharon said. Her husband Tim said that it was an easy decision to help out the Birker’s. “It was the right thing to do to help your fellow dairy farmer out,” he said. “We’re all in this together,” he added. Sharon Corkery noted that being a dairy farmer is not a simple Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. job. She Turn to BIRKERS | Page 4

Because of their experience as dairy farmers, Sharon said that they knew it was important the Birker’s dairy cows nd a new home right away. “We knew they needed a home and they needed it right now,” she said. “We know how important it is to take care of those animals,” she added. Beatty and Corkery both also said that they didn’t just give the Birker’s the use of their facility. They also have been offering their own manpower and assistance when needed. Beatty said that he believes the number of people stepping up to help the Birkers is an example of “Iowa nice.” “You see it all over our great state,

when somebody is down, you see the neighbors coming to help,” he said. “None of us ever know when tragedy is going to hit,” Beatty also said. Ken Birker said that no cattle were lost in the re. Birker also said while they have not determined an ofcial cause of re, they have located the “hottest spot” in the ruins, likely showing where the re began. He said that they hope to rebuild what was lost in Sunday’s re. Until then, their dairy cows will be housed in Buchanan County. For Sharon and Tim Corkery and Jim Beatty, that won’t be a problem. “We just put our selves in their shoes. We knew we’d want somebody to help us,” Sharon said. “You hope the same thing would happen for you,” Beatty said.

Bentley said it’s important to monitor heifers’ growth to make sure they are big enough to be bred on time, and, in turn, enter the milking herd when they should. Various sorts of scales and measuring tapes can be used, but some farmers choose to simply fasten a measuring tape to a post in the heifer pen. When a heifer stands in front of the tape, it’s easy to see her height and calculate her approximate weight. By the time a heifer is 4 to 8 months, she typically weighs 300 to 500 pounds, Bentley said. At 8 to 12 months, a typical weight is 500 to 700 pounds. And at 16 to 20 months, if all has gone well, she generally weighs 900 to 1,100 pounds. As heifers grow, it’s important

CALMAR, Iowa – As part of a discussion on cost-effective facilities for dairy farms, participants in Iowa’s New Farmer Learning Network heard about buildings for heifers. The discussion took place Dec. 1 at Iowa’s Dairy Center in Calmar, Iowa, with groups at Dubuque, Ames and Sioux Center joining via the Jen Bentley Internet. ISU Extension Jen Bentley, a member of the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team, talked about calf-to-cow facilities, including those for heifers. Bentley said heifer facilities should do three things: provide a healthy comfortable environment for the animals; provide a safe, convenient working environment for the caregivers; and produce heifers that are ready to breed at 12 to 15 months of age. By the time a heifer is 2 months old, a calf typically weighs 175 pounds. When it’s weaned, at 2 to 4 months, a heifer generally tips the scales at 175 to 300 pounds.

to give them enough space. Each heifer weighing 300 to 500 pounds needs 40 square feet of bedded area, Bentley said. At 500 to 700 pounds, the amount of bedded area should increase to 50 square feet per head. Boost that bedded area to 70 square feet when heifers hit 900 to 1,100 pounds, Bentley said. And raise it to 80 square feet per animal at 1,100 to 1,300 pounds. Finally, each heifer should have 120 square feet of bedded area when she is due to calve in two to four weeks. When grouping heifers, it’s considered good management to make sure the weight difference among animals is no more than 200 pounds, Bentley said. It’s also a good idea to keep the maximum age difference at 4 months. Doing so will lessen competition and stress. Other things to think about with heifer facilities include how ration changes will be handled. Heifers should be fed by age groups, and it’s a good idea to provide enough bunk space so the whole group can eat at the same time, Bentley said. Having restraint facilities in the heifer building makes breeding and herd health checks easier, Bentley said. A good heifer facility also allows for manure and old bedding to be cleaned out conveniently. And, a good building has water that doesn’t freeze, along with good ventilation and a design that makes it easy to observe the heifers. Bentley praised the heifer building plans from Penn State University. “I think they’re good plans for producers to use as a guideline, especially if they’re expanding or building new,” she said. The plan she showed uses a bedded-pack and lets heifers be moved from pen to pen, by way of gates, starting when they weigh 300 to 500 pounds and on to just before calving. Penn State also has a building that uses freestalls instead of a bedded manure pack, Bentley said. Again, the pens are connected by gates, making it easy to move heifers as they grow. When choosing locations for cattle facilities, remember to consider which animals on the farm are the most susceptible to infections, Bentley said. Calves and fresh cows are the most susceptible, followed by transition cows, then weaning age heifers, lactating cows and dry cows. Lay buildings out so air from near a manure storage facility does not travel past baby calves, Bentley said. Likewise, try to keep manure handling equipment away from feed storage and delivery areas.

CALMAR, Iowa – Getting going in dairy farming can be a daunting task. To make the process easier, a New Farmer Learning Network is in place in Iowa. Some 30 young and beginning dairy farmers gathered in four locations Dec. 1, to hear about cost-effective facilities. The largest group, 18 people, met at Iowa’s Dairy Center in Calmar, Iowa, with smaller groups joining in by way of the Internet. Those groups were at Dubuque, Ames and Sioux Center. Jen Bentley, a member of the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team, said a goal of the network is to provide an open atmosphere for discussion, sharing of ideas and learning about resources for producers who are in their rst 10 to 12 years of dairy farming. “It’s important to help producers make sound dairy farm management decisions that are backed by current and relevant information,” Bentley said. Bentley talked about calf-to-cow facilities, including hutches, group pens and individual pens. No matter which type of housing is used for calves, the goal is the same: Get calves off to a good start. The amount of weight a calf gains during its rst 50 days has a major effect on the amount of milk she will eventually produce, Bentley said. “Every 2.2 pounds of average daily
gain during days one through 50 yields an additional 1,800 pounds of milk in the rst lactation,” Bentley said. “The management of the pre-weaned calf inuences the expression of the genetic capacity of the animal for milk yield.” Good calf housing has ve key components, Bentley said. They are adequate space, good air quality, dry bedding, easy access to water and feed, and being convenient and comfortable for the people taking care of the calves. On the last point, Bentley said raising calves indoors instead of in outside hutches offers advantages. The calves are out of the weather, feed and supplies can be stored close by and space can be used more efciently. And, the people tending the calves can be out of the elements, too. But an indoor calf facility can be tricky to properly ventilate. And it can be tougher to let a building sit idle, compared to a few hutches. About half the people at the Calmar meeting indicated they raise calves in hutches. The rest use other means such as individual, indoor pens. An ideal calf pen, Bentley said, should give a calf at least 34 square feet of bedded area. Calves need more bedding in colder weather, she reminded, and drainage under the bedding can help keep it dry. Calves of varying ages have differing comfort zones, Bentley said. A calf younger than 2 weeks likes to be at 50-78 degrees, while one older than 2 weeks prefers a range of 32-73 degrees. People, by contrast, generally prefer a temperature between 72-86 degrees. For drainage, Bentley said Iowa State University Extension recommends a base of gravel 18 to 24 inches
deep, with a four-inch-wide drain tile going to a tank or some other form of storage. The pens should have solid side walls to help prevent drafts and to keep calves from touching each other. The fronts should be open, but the back should be of wire mesh. This ideal calf pen is in a building that is naturally ventilated using positive-pressure tubes. Bentley said the recommendation is to make such a building so it can accommodate 25 percent more calves than the farm’s calving rate. As for the bedding itself, one option is straw on top of wood shavings. The shavings keep urine from running

out of pens, since they are more absorbent than long straw. Ventilation is an important aspect. “Fresh air is needed to remove gases, moisture and heat, and to reduce airborne bacteria counts,” Bentley said. “More than 100 gases can be formed in manure, including ammonia, methane, hydrogen sulde and carbon dioxide.” Natural ventilation is the least-expensive method, since it uses adjustable sidewall curtains, operated manually or automatically. One drawback, though, is that other buildings can’t be
too close. Bentley said other structures should be at least 75 feet away, so they don’t block the wind. Calf barns can be mechanically ventilated, too. Whether cross ventilation or tunnel ventilation is used, air needs to get down to where the calves are, Bentley said. The design and location of air inlets is important, as is the use of bafes to help hold the air at calf level. A positive-pressure tube is another mechanical ventilation method. A fan pulls fresh air from outside. Then the air travels through a tube and is directed down to the cattle. Of course, calf buildings differ in cost. Bentley said the least expensive type can be a hoop building with a row of pens on each side. She estimated the cost at $8 to $9 per square foot. Moving up in price is a curtainsided building. Bentley said a barn with curtains open from both the top and bottom is the best. Expect such a building to cost $10 to $12 per square foot. But she said those gures do not include concrete, gates, pens or utilities. The most expensive option, according to ISU Extension, is mechanically ventilated and has a ceiling and solid walls. Such a barn might cost $12 to $14 per square foot. Bentley offered the costs of other calf barn features. For example, a barn that has a warm room for baby calves can cost $1,500 to $2,000 per square foot. Plastic calf pens, 4- by 7-feet can cost $500 each. A single, basic calf feeding system costs about $2,500, while a programmable feeding unit with two to four feeding stations can cost $20,000 to $25,000.

Capra Nera crafting artisan goat cheese Wiste fullls dream of having a farmstead creamery By Krista Kuzma

ALTURA, Minn. – Katie Wiste had a dream of one day milking her goats and producing farmstead cheeses with the milk, but she didn’t know when or where it would all take shape. This year, Wiste has fullled her dream. Since May 1, Wiste has been milking her 15 goats and making cheese to sell at regional grocery stores and restaurants. Both milking and cheesemaking take place on the farm, which she calls Capra Nera Creamery, where she and ancé, Ryan Bonow, live near Altura, Minn. “I said I would be happy if I was up and running by the time I was 30, and right now I’m 27 years old,” said Wiste, who runs her goat herd and creamery single handedly. Goats are milked seasonally, freshening around April and drying up in December. “It depends on the weather. I don’t have heat in my parlor so I don’t want to milk in there when it’s negative 20,” Wiste said. After next year’s kidding season, Wiste will be milking
26 goats. A former 1970s era parlor on her ance’s farm was converted into her current parlor, milk house and make room. Half of the double-4 herringbone parlor, originally intended for dairy cows, was made into a single-6 parlor for goats that can be upgraded to a double-6. The other half of the original parlor was turned into the milk house. The cheese making and aging rooms are the former milkhouse. Wiste, with the help of family and friends, gutted the facility in November 2015, working through the winter to reconstruct the building into what it is now. “We put up new dairy board and steel,” Wiste said. Wiste is using the bulk tank her parents rst used when they started dairy farming along with a used compressor and pipeline she found at various places. “It’s really a hodgepodge of things put together,” Wiste said. The parlor is an upgrade from 2014, when she milked six goats by hand, and 2015, when she purchased a portable milker for her nine goats.

They all go back to my rst original goat [when I was a 4-Her],” Wiste said. That rst goat nurtured Wiste’s love for cheesemaking. “There was too much milk for us just to drink, so I started experimenting at home making cheese. I always entered my cheese in the 4-H competition
in the food and nutrition category,” Wiste said. In college, Wiste studied at the Vermont Institute of Artisan Cheese. “That’s when I realized how much work is involved [in cheesemaking], but it introduced me to this whole new world of artisan cheese I didn’t know existed,” she said.
After two trips to Italy where she worked at and toured farmstead creameries, Wiste purchased a vat two years ago to practice her cheesemaking skills at home, making cheese for her family. Wiste plans to focus her creamery on raw milk cheese, Turn to WISTE | Page 12

which is required to be aged at least 60 days. “With raw milk there are more undertones and there is a lot more avor,” Wiste said. “There’s really a depth of cheese you only really get with raw milk.” The way Wiste manages her herd also makes a difference in the avor and texture of the cheese. Wiste plans to move towards grass fed goats through intensive grazing and does not feed corn in her ration. “I’m learning a lot more
about it,” she said. So far, Wiste has been making two types – Contadina, a hard raw cheese with a natural rind, along with a semi-soft washed rind cheese. “Protein really changes in milk as the goats get late in lactation,” Wiste said. “Every batch [of cheese] is different because they’re eating differently or they progress in lactation.” Contadina is made using the early lactation milk until about mid October. The softer cheese is made with the late

lactation milk. Although Wiste has a mixed breed herd, she is breeding more towards Nubians, which have higher butterfat and protein. “It’s better for cheesemaking. The avor is carried in the fat so you want a healthy amount of fat in the milk. And the protein makes up the mass of the cheese,” Wiste said. With dry off nearing, Wiste has reduced the herd to onetime-a-day milking and making cheese every three days rather than three times a week. “I’m really hoping to make
cheeses that highlight the changes of the milk,” Wiste said. Currently, Wiste sells her cheese at the grocery store in Spring Grove, Minn., a coop and grocery store in Winona, Minn., and a co-op and three restaurants in Rochester, Minn.; however, Wiste admits marketing isn’t her strong suit. “It’s a challenge,” she said. “I’m not a person who really likes to put myself out there.” Her love lies with her goat herd at home and making the cheese on the farm. “I’ve always wanted to
be the main cheesemaker and herds-person. I don’t want to give up those two things. I love both aspects a lot,” Wiste said. In the future, Wiste is looking to expand her goat herd to 50 and increase the number of styles of cheese she makes. “I’m looking forward to getting really good at it and seeing what I can create with the milk,” she said. “It’s really satisfying to go through the whole process and come up with something that tastes pretty good.”

Protect yourself, your herd Drug-resistant salmonella found in dairy bull calves By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com
Since January, 17 cases of Salmonella Heidelberg in humans have been reported in Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa. To date, eight people required hospitalization but none resulted in death. “There are thousands of Salmonella strains in the world and many that cattle may naturally carry,” said Carrie Klumb, epidemiologist at the Minnesota Department of Health. “What is concerning in this outbreak is that calves are getting very ill and some of them are dying.” This strain of Salmonella Heidelberg is multi-drug resistant, meaning most antibiotics will not work to treat people or animals. In Iowa, one case was reported, while Minnesota and South Dakota each reported two cases of Salmonella Heidelberg – with one of the Minnesota cases reporting direct contact with dairy bull calves. Wisconsin, however, has seen the greatest number of cases – 12 in eight counties: Chippewa, Clark, Eau Claire, Lafayette, Marathon, Ozaukee, Rusk and Trempealeau. “Those affected are primarily people who have had direct contact with infected calves,” said Jennifer Miller, Wisconsin Department of Health Services. “The general public should not be overly concerned and there is no evidence the food supply is affected.” Currently, the outbreak is under investigation, but it is known that the bull calves likely originated from livestock markets in Wisconsin and this strain of Salmonella could potentially be established in multiple herds, Klumb said. “Strains that are multi-drug resistant have periodically spread through livestock populations. It’s too early to tell if this is what we are seeing with this outbreak, but it has the potential to be,” Klumb said. Cattle infected may show signs of fever, scours, anorexia, abortions and even a decrease in milk production. “The biggest thing producers can do is have that strong relationship with your veterinarian,” said Dr. Beth Thompson, Minnesota Board of Animal Health Executive Director. “They visit your farm often and understand your herd’s health.”

Humans can become sick in a variety of ways, through food, person-to-person spread or contact with animals. The bacteria is shed in the stool and must be ingested in order to get sick, Klumb said. If an individual exhibits symptoms of Salmonella Heidelberg, including fever and diarrhea, stomach cramps and vomiting, they should see a doctor immediately as symptoms typically develop within 72 hours of exposure. “Most people feel better without any treatment, but it’s a good idea to see your doctor and have a stool sample tested,” Klumb said. Those most susceptible are young children and individuals with a suppressed immune system. “Ideally, children under 5 should not have direct contact with calves,” Klumb said. “Their immune system is not fully developed and calves, although cute, can have a variety of germs that may make you sick.” For dairy producers and others who may be exposed to Salmonella Heidelberg, health ofcials encourage routine hand washing with soap and warm water; using dedicated work boots and clothes; not eating or drinking while in the animals’ environment; and supervising young children on the farm. Biosecurity is also important and herd owners should limit visitor access to the animals on their farm. What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in the Winona FFA. I am the president.
Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I am involved in FFA because I live on a dairy farm (even though it’s not just for farmers), and my dad was in FFA, too. It seemed fun and a good way to get to know other people. I am part of the ofcer team, and I’m also on the oriculture team. My favorite thing is to be with all my friends I made throughout my four years in FFA. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My best experience has been being able to go to the national FFA convention. I see and meet so many other members, and I get to go to many different workshops. What’s your favorite social media? Snapchat. I love all the different lters and all the people you can talk to. What are your career aspirations? I hope to be able to go to college when I graduate and eventually take over our family farm. SDSU Dairy Club to host Midwestern Regional Conference of the American Dairy Science Association Student Afliate Division The student members of the South Dakota State University Dairy Club have formed committees, chosen a logo, launched social media pages and jumped into preparations to host the 2017 Midwestern Regional conference of the American Dairy Science Association Student Afliate Division, Feb. 3-5, at the Days Inn and on the SDSU campus in Brookings, S.D. The American Dairy Science Association is a professional organization for those interested in Dairy Science and has approximately 5,000 members from around the world. The Student Afliate Division caters specically to students studying Dairy Science and preparing for careers in this eld. Playing host to this conference is no small task as more than 400 students from 14 states are expected to attend the three-day event. Attendees will compete in various events and contests including a quiz bowl, and have their club scrapbooks/yearbooks evaluated. Educational sessions will cover a variety of pertinent dairy industry topics presented by industry experts. Tours of the SDSU Davis Dairy Plant and local dairy farms will also be conducted. A Career Fair during the event will help students network with dairy industry employers. A banquet and dance will cap off the festivities. Audrey Souza of Milbank, S.D., and Cole Hoyer of West Salem, Wis., are cochairs for the conference. They are overseeing a variety of subcommittees composed of the 80 members of the SDSU Dairy Club. The Dairy Club Executive committee attended the 2016 meeting, held in Fort Wayne, Ind., and presented a successful proposal for SDSU to host the 2017 meeting. This will be the fourth year that SDSU has played host-previous conferences were hosted by the SDSU Dairy Club in Brookings in 1996, 2005 and 2010. “It’s a lot of fun for the students involved in the dairy industry to get together for this conference,” Bernice Vander Wal, current Dairy Club President, explains. “We will be working with these people throughout our careers.” Vikram Mistry, Head of the SDSU Dairy and Food Science Department, notes that he attended his rst ADSA Student Afliate conference in 1980 and met current ADSA President Lou Armentano, University of Wisconsin, at that meeting, thus forming a life-long professional relationship. The SDSU students have chosen the conference theme, “All We Have We Owe to Udders.” Megan Schaefer, Dairy Club Historian and past president, provides more details about the theme, noting, “Everything we have, accomplish and get to do in life, we owe to others. Our families, professors, friends and mentors are crucial to our success.” As part of their preparations for the conference, the SDSU Dairy Club members have set a fundraising goal to raise the estimated $45,000 they anticipate it will cost to host the event. The Club is anticipating contributions from industry, alumni and others interested in this event that will host the future leaders of the dairy industry. 2016 Minnesota Fall Harvest Sale It was a cool, crisp morning in Minnesota for the 2016 Minnesota Fall Harvest Sale, but that didn’t stop buyers and bidders from lling the bleachers at the McLeod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Minn. The sale was Nov. 19. At the sale 87 lots were auctioned off and included two half lots. The sale averaged $2,399 on the 87 lots. The cows averaged $2351, the bred heifers averaged $2,230 and the open heifers averaged $2,648. The high seller of the day was lot 6, Summer-Dream 1985 M2510-ET consigned by Jim Vierhout, and purchased by Deboer Holsteins, Corona, SD for $11,250. The second high seller was lot 8, Melarry Modesty Soncha consigned by Melarry Farms and purchased by Jim Vierhout, Hull, Iowa for $6,000. This years rafe grand prize winner was Bob Eustice from Byron, Minn. Bob took home rafe calf number 2, SD-Ashview Glauco Pat, consigned by Ted and Molly Norling.

SBA offers disaster assistance to residents of Minnesota affected by severe storms and ooding The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet issued the following statement after the announcement of the Presidential disaster declaration for several counties in Minnesota affected by severe storms and ooding on Sept. 21-24, 2016: “The U.S. Small Business Administration is strongly committed to providing the people of Minnesota with the most effective and customer-focused response possible to assist businesses, homeowners and renters with federal disaster loans. Getting businesses and communities up and running after a disaster is our highest priority at the SBA.” The disaster declaration covers the counties of Blue Earth, Freeborn, Hennepin, Le Sueur, Rice, Steele and Waseca in Minnesota which are eligible for both Physical and Economic Injury Disaster Loans from the SBA. Small businesses and most private nonprot organizations in the following adjacent counties are eligible to apply only for SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans: Anoka, Brown, Carver, Dakota, Dodge, Faribault, Goodhue, Martin, Mower, Nicollet, Ramsey, Scott, Sherburne, Sibley, Watonwan and Wright in Minnesota; Winnebago and Worth counties in Iowa. Businesses and private nonprot organizations of any size may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets. Applicants may be eligible for a loan amount increase up to 20 percent of their physical damages, as veried by the SBA for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements may now include a safe room or storm shelter to help protect property and occupants from future damage caused by a similar disaster. For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprot organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage. Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible up to $40,000 to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed personal property. Interest rates are as low as 4 percent for businesses and 2.625 percent for nonprot organizations 1.563 percent for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s nancial condition. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via the SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. Landlords, farmers, agri-business professionals should make plans to attend one of the informative land rent meetings being held across Minnesota. These free meetings are being provided by the University of Minnesota Extension. Farm land rental rates have started to lower as corn and soybean prices continue lower in 2016. Determining a fair farm rent agreement is a challenge in today’s economy with current signicantly lower corn and soybeans prices in 2016 compared to recent record corn and soybean prices and record farm land values. Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satises the land owner and the farmer is a challenge. David Bau, Pauline Van Nurden, Gary Hachfeld and Nathan Hulinsky, Extension Educators in Ag Business Management, will provide several ways; by examples, factsheets and worksheets to determine a fair farm land rental rate for both parties. Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farm land values and sales, a worksheet that will help determine a fair rental agreement. Input costs for 2017 will be presented along with current 2017 corn and soybean prices. Worksheets will examine 2017 costs and what is affordable rent that a farmer will be able to pay in 2017, the rate of return to the landlord at current market values and examine exible rental agreements. Make plans to attend one of these meetings now. Attendees will receive several informative worksheets and factsheets that will help to determine what is a fair 2017 farm land rental rate is. The workshop will be held at the Starbuck Community Center (307 E. 5th Street) from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a eld tour following from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dan and Linda Jenniges farm near Glenwood. The Land Stewardship Project will present on the Cropping Systems Calculator, which provides farmers a way to pencil out the economics of utilizing cover crops, grazing and other rotations in their production systems. During the afternoon eld day, participants will caravan to the Jenniges farm to see rsthand a winter grazing system. They will have an opportunity to ask questions about bale feeding, watering, fencing and the programs that support setting up a grazing infrastructure. The eld day location is a half-mile north of the Jenniges farm near Glenwood (2287 Co. Rd. 10) on County Road 19. Shrinking margins in production agriculture will be the focus of the 2016 Ag Summit which will be held in Brookings Dec. 13, and in Mitchell Dec. 20, 2016. Hosted by SDSU Extension in conjunction with other industry experts, the Ag Summit is designed to help producers navigate the margin squeeze. Speakers will focus on agriculture risk management strategies, discuss agriculture loan options, address farm protability outlook as well as management challenges. Experts will also provide a
2017 price outlook and discuss how to develop a risk management plan, and farm nancial management in tough times. The one-day meeting will be fast-paced, but allow plenty of time to answer questions. MINNEAPOLIS – One word describes mailbox milk prices this past August: up. Prices rose in all 19 reporting areas, according to the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). The increase from July averaged 94 cents per hundredweight, bringing the national average to $16.69. What’s more, the August average this year was up 21 cents, compared to August 2015. Milk producers in Wisconsin saw an increase of $1.26. That jump from July brought the average price in America’s Dairyland to $17.78. A year earlier, the average mailbox price in Wisconsin stood at $17.50. In Minnesota, Gopher State dairy producers posted a gain of $1.56 from July. That made the August mailbox average nish at $17.78, the same as Wisconsin. A year earlier, the Minnesota average was $17.23. Iowa’s August average totaled $17.19, an increase of $1.04 from July. A year ago, Hawkeye State farmers got an August average of $16.84. The highest August mailbox price was recorded in Florida. The Sunshine State average hit $18 and was up $1.21 from July. The New England States – Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont – wound up with the second-highest

One of those was Illinois, where the average nished at $17.09, up $1.05 from the month before. Southern Missouri farmers were paid an August average of $17.19, up from $15.90. Farmers in the Southeast States – Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi – were paid an average of $17.13, up from $15.88 in July. August milk. In the Northwest States – Washington and Oregon – the average was $16.83, up from $16.03 in July. Close behind, at $16.81, were the Appalachian States – Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The price there rose 94 cents from July. In western Pennsylvania, the average nished at $16.43, up 64 cents. In one state to the east – Ohio – the mailbox price average was $16.35 in August, up 52 cents. New York dairy producers were also paid an average of $16.35, up 59 cents from the month before. Moving to eastern Pennsylvania,
the price average was $16.34, up 59 cents. The Corn Belt States – Kansas, Nebraska and part of Missouri – saw an August average at $16.06. That was up from July’s $14.93. In western Texas, the mailbox price averaged $16.25, up from $14.87 in July. Hoosier State farmers received an August average of $16. That was up 40 cents from July. Dairy producers in California – not a part of the federal milk marketing order system – saw an August average of $15.75, up from $14.55 in July. Once again, dairy producers in New Mexico did not receive the lowest mailbox average. In the Land of Enchantment, the August price nished at $15.42, up from $14.07 in July. Michigan dairy producers once again received the lowest mailbox milk price. In the Wolverine State, the August price average was $14.70, up 72 cents from July. This past August, the U.S. average butterfat test was 3.63 percent, while the average protein test was 3.01 percent. Other solids in the milk averaged 5.74 percent. Mailbox prices are the actual, net amounts farmers see on the checks in their mailboxes. The AMS collects these prices through its federal milk order market administrator ofces. Mailbox prices include all payments farmers received for milk they sold. These prices also reect all deductions associated with marketing that milk. There’s no adjustment to 3.5 percent butterfat, so mailbox prices reect the actual test of the milk.
