Harvesting prevented planting acres after Nov. 1
Some farmers planted cover crops on land where prevented planting payments were taken after the end of the late planting period for the crop. There is a wide range of crop conditions now as farmers consider whether there is something useful to harvest for feed or bedding after Nov. 1; or whether to till the cover crop in the fall or to leave it until spring. This is very much a guessing process, trying to use as much common sense as we can. We don’t’ have a lot of experience with this. Other experiences might offer some clues. Here are a few thoughts – you might have better ideas. By Dan Martens Farmers might take eld U of M Extension samples to test moisture and feed quality in making decisions about harvest, storage and feed use. It’s usually difcult to make dry hay this time of the year without unusually favorable drying weather. Baling and wrapping with plastic might be an option. Treating with propionic acid might be useful if the crop gets down to 25 to 30% moisture. Hay at marginal moisture levels might keep for a short period of time if you could count on it staying cold enough and fed up fairly soon. But some weather forecasts indicate fall weather could stay on the mild side. A mild fall could extend grazing and drying options. Drying can still be a pretty slow this time of year. Managed grazing might be done in some situations by using perimeter fencing and a cross wire to manage livestock access to from day to day. I’d like to think sorghum and sudangrass have frozen hard enough and long enough ago so that prussic acid would not be a concern. But for grazing or fresh cut feeding, following precautions could be useful, especially if the crop was kind of green yet. Where farmers might buy this kind of crop from a neighbor, they might have a sample tested and compare the value to grass hay or another crop with similar feed quality. Their nutrition advisor might gure whether there are higher levels of sugar or something that contributes to feed value; and how it would t in rations compared to alternatives. The harvest cost and extra storage costs would be deducted from a feed value. They might deduct a little more if they are not condent about how well the crop will store and feed, as a margin for error. Buyer and sellers need to agree on how they determine yield. Weighing all of what is harvested or weighing a portion from a measured part of the eld and testing moisture helps where feasible. The farmer who planted the crop might think about a price per acre based on their investment in the crop. Then the buyer needs to determine if there is enough feed or bedding of a suitable quality to make it worth the price and effort. Farmers who are thinking about harvesting something from cover crops might review their fall plans again with their crop insurance staff to be sure to stay clear with rules. They might review plans with NRCS staff if any of the land is designated as Highly Erodible Land (HEL).
