AMPI cheese wins top award

NEW ULM, Minn. – For the second year in a row, the cheesemakers of Associated Milk Producers Inc. brought home the coveted Chairman’s Trophy following the National Milk Producers Federation Championship Cheese Contest. A hand-crafted aged asiago made at the cooperative’s plant in Hoven, South Dakota, was named best of class in the Italian division and received the distinction of the contest’s best overall entry. The 2020 National Milk Producers Federation Championship Cheese Contest received nearly 200 entries from cheesemakers all across the country. Due to COVID-19 concerns, this year’s cheese contest was conducted virtually. Judging was conducted from multiple locations and donated storage spaces. Smaller cheese blocks played their role as did continual ingenuity from a team determined not to let a pandemic upend a cherished dairy tradition. “I think it’s important that while we are in strange and unique times because of the

pandemic, that some things still continue to happen as normal course of order,” said Jamie Jonker, NMPF’s staff scientist and a 16-year veteran of the competition. “The most rewarding part is that, unless we told people about how we did it, most people wouldn’t understand that it was any different from other years. And I think that’s a testament to the great team that we’ve got at National Milk, our cheese judges and our co-ops that enter the cheese every year for really making it seem like nothing was different, even though everything was different.” Mike Wolkow, AMPI’s senior vice president of operations, had admiration for the Hoven team. “Champion cheese isn’t a title earned by any one individual,” Wolkow said. “It begins on the farm with members producing topquality milk and continues with a talented team of cheesemakers. The co-op launched its Dinner Bell Creamery brand and accompanying Co-op Crafted promise in 2019, highlighting more than 50 years of dairy farm families partnering with skilled butter makers and cheesemakers. The key ingredient in awardwinning cheese is exceptional milk, according to Kevin Hageman, manager of AMPI’s Hoven facility. “Award-winning, artisan cheese begins with quality milk produced on AMPI member farms,” Hageman said. “In addition, the feed produced in the area and fed to the cows gives the cheese its distinctive avor.” Hageman said that no special procedures were followed when the Hoven plant made the championship cheese. “Making award-worthy cheese is the daily standard at AMPI,” he said. “We don’t make special cheese for contests. This is the quality product we’re making every day.” Hageman gave credit to everyone who was involved in producing AMPI’s prize-winning cheese. “The awards are a wonderful recognition of the hard work and commitment to quality AMPI dairy farmer-owners and cheesemakers put into their jobs every day,” Hageman said. The AMPI Hoven team specializes in producing three hard Italian-style cheeses, including asiago, parmesan and Romano. The cheese is crafted in the old world style, hand-shaped into 22-pound round wheels which measure about 13 inches by 4 1/2 inches deep. The wheels are placed in brine to help develop the avor. They are then sealed with plastic and stored for aging. The AMPI plant in Hoven, annually produces about 4.5 million pounds of cheese.

EMERALD, Wis. – Some days, Michelle McNamara spends her time smelling some not-so-nice stuff on her family’s dairy farm. Other days, she is swathed in the sweet smells of the candles she makes and sells through her business, The Rusted Cow. “I started out making candles for fun,” McNamara said. “I never thought it would turn into a business. But friends kept asking about them, so I decided to take that next leap, to create a business. It has been a wonderful experience making that transition.” That idea molded into The Rusted Cow. McNamara said choosing a name that represented not only what she wanted the business to become but that connected with her life was difcult. “I wanted something that would show my dairy background through the candle company,” McNamara said. McNamara and her father, Michael, milk 60 Holsteins on their St. Croix County farm, which has been

in their family since 1915. “I have lived on my family’s farm my entire life, and I wouldn’t change a minute of it,” McNamara said of the importance of bringing her farm roots into her edgling business. “We are a very close-knit family, always having fun family get-togethers.” Being rooted deeply in her family’s farming tradition has helped McNamara develop ways to balance farming, her full-time, off-farm job as a sales representative for Udder Comfort, and her blossoming candle business. “Balance can be hard,” she said. “I just keep going and doing what needs to be done. I see what needs to be done rst and make that the priority. binations to get the result you want is a big factor,” McNamara said. “Properly prepping the wax and then melting it to the correct temperature is very important.” After the wax is melted, McNamara said the fragrance is added. Then the wax must cool to a certain temperature before being ready to pour into the vessel. Once the wax hardens in the
vessel, the candle is labeled and ready for sale. McNamara said the candles are made from pure soy wax, and all of the ingredients are phthalate-free. Instead of carrying a large stock of candles, McNamara is making candles to ll orders as they come in. Turn to MCNAMARA | Page 7

Candles are being made for Michelle McNamara’s business, The Rusted Cow. McNamara is looking forward to growing her product line to include air fresheners and a new line of cow-inspired candles.
“When I receive an order, the typical turnaround time is ve to seven days,” McNamara said. “For local customers, we offer doorstep delivery or set up a meeting time.” In addition to individual customer orders, McNamara has been growing a retail network of area boutiques, salons and craft stores to stock her hand-made products. She is working with seven small businesses in northwestern Wisconsin and is growing that network to reach potential customers. “My goal is for The Rusted Cow to keep growing and reaching more and more customers, and to increase the number of products we carry,” McNamara said. “We are working on trialing some new products, and I am excited to be able to offer those soon. Having options for customers to choose from is very important to us.”

The current product line is not only candles but also includes wax melts and reed diffusers. McNamara is developing a line of room freshener sprays as well as air fresheners for cars, closets, desk drawers and ofce spaces. “Our one main goal was to bring a little piece of country living to
each household,” McNamara said. “If there is a scent you would like, but we don’t have, we’d love to hear it. We are always looking for new scent ideas; country smells that you think people shouldn’t live without.” As a nod to her dairy background, one of McNamara’s pet projects is developing a separate candle line to represent various cattle breeds, with a unique scent devoted to each breed. McNamara said she has been blown away by the response she has gotten for her candles from family and friends. She does most of her marketing on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. “I have sent products farther away than I would have ever thought I would,” McNamara said. Even with the successes she has encountered, McNamara admits that being a small business can be challenging at times, especially in the face of the novel coronavirus pandemic. “Getting supplies can be hard at times, and shipping sometimes takes longer,” McNamara said. “All of our customers have been great to work with, and very patient with any issues that have arose.” Despite those challenges, McNamara said the rewards she has thus far reaped, both personally and professionally, in developing The Rusted Cow have been a blessing. “I can’t say thank you enough to everybody who has supported me through the creation of this new business,” McNamara said. “Family and friends have been so supportive, and to all my customers that have ordered products, I am so grateful.”

Research conrms udder health dependent on bedding management

When it comes to udder health, there are several factors dairy farmers need to consider, including the three Bs: bedding, bacteria load and better management. “Bedding management is one on the long list of factors for mastitis control,” said Dr. Sandra Godden with the University of Minnesota. Godden presented, “Improving Udder Health through Better Bedding Management,” Nov. 19 as part of a webinar series hosted by the National Mastitis Council. In her presentation, Godden reviewed the relationship between bedding bacteria counts (BBC) and intramammary infections, and specically discussed the management options for recycled manure solids and sand to create an environment that promotes udder health. “When we think about the relationship between BBC
and intramammary infections, intuitively, this makes perfect sense,” Godden said. “Higher BBC leads to higher infections in cows.” In further understanding the correlation, Godden described a study that included 168 herds from 17 states across the nation. Herds were selected based on four bedding types used – new sand, recycled sand, recycled manure solids and organic material, such as sawdust shavings or straw. The herds were visited twice a year to collect bedding samples and analyze records from the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Bedding samples examined bacteria counts of coliforms, Klebsiella, Strep and Strep-like organisms (SSLO), and Staph. The results uniformly conrmed rising bacteria counts in unused bedding leads to worse udder health. “So, how do we choose a low risk bedding material?” Godden said. “We know manure solids are generally the worst for udder health and sand is generally the best. But,

What are they doing differently for success?” First, regardless of bedding material, the source must be fresh and clean. This means considering dry matter and organic matter in the bedding’s characteristics. Typically, the higher the dry matter content,
the more protective the bedding is, and the lower the organic matter, the better. Management factors that will affect the quality of bedding include processing and storage. When using recycled manure solids, there are four ways to reclaim the material, including a green pressed method, a methane digester, composted in a static pile,
windrows or a rotating drum, and mechanical hot air dryers. Godden spoke of a study that targeted these processing methods from eight farms in Minnesota and 21 in Wisconsin, all averaging 1,700 cows. “We milk about 1,000 cows near Miŋinburg, PA. As many of us know 2018 corn silage wasn’t very good feed. I started reading the adverƟsing from RECAL Microbials and thought ‘what the heck’ and called about it. I talked to Jamie Troxel about the RECAL and he wanted to come to my farm and see with his own eyes what was going on before he would even sell me any of the product because, like he said, ‘every farm is diīerent’. So, I thought why not, what’s it going to hurt? Plus, I liked the idea that he was willing to come out instead of working over the phone. We were not having any major issues but we were seeing very inconsistent manure and weren’t seeing cows coming into heat. Jamie came to the farm, asked me some quesƟons about how the cows were doing, looked at my raƟon and silage, and walked the cows. Right away he picked out the inconsistent manure and noƟced that we had a lot of Įber passing Leroy Troester through. Jamie then pulled silage samples and checked the dry maƩers right 570-412-0704 then with Koster testers he carries in his truck. He told me he was sure that I tonite. was dealing with a mycotoxin issue even though I was already feeding a name brand binder, yeast and bentonite. Jamie began telling me about the diīerences in the three RECAL probioƟc products and recommended the RECAL PLUS. He told me that I could pull out my toxin binder, yeast and bentonite. He also oīered me a thirty-day trial. If I wanted to try the product, he would give me the product for thirty days, tell me what to watch for and aŌer the thirty days if I wasn’t happy with the RECAL I paid absolutely nothing. But if I did like the product then I paid for the product used in the trial and we kept doing business together. With the way I am set up the only way he would do this trial was if we put some groups on the RECAL and not other groups, so we had a controlled trial. This way I could really see the diīerence. Since oīers like this don’t come around every day I thought why not, plus I liked the way Jamie wanted to prove the product and expressed that much conĮdence that it would work. So that’s what we did. I started feeding the RECAL PLUS to two groups of milk cows, the pre fresh cows and fresh cows. I had also been feeding another probioƟc to my pre fresh and fresh cows but switched them to the RECAL. I started feeding the probioƟc that I had been using to the other two groups to make the trial even beƩer. Jamie also pulled a TMR sample and sent it to Cumberland Valley AnalyƟcal for a toxin test and it came back at 3.5 ppm vomitoxin. There was NO comparison, aŌer about three days the groups that were on the RECAL showed more consistency in the manure and stronger heats. We saw no change in the groups that were not on RECAL. My Cargill nutriƟonist even came in and performed manure screenings for the controlled groups and was very impressed with the diīerence in Įber digesƟon. I then put the whole herd on RECAL PLUS and pulled out the toxin binder, yeast and bentonite I was feeding. We didn’t see much diīerence in milk producƟon but our %BF went from about 3.65% to about 4%. We have also started feeding the RECAL Calf Powder to all of our calves and my wife who takes care of the calves has been very happy with it as well. Over the summer we have held about 80# milk with 3.75% BF on 50# DMI which is an FCM eĸciency of 1.67. Not too bad for dry corn silage combined with a hot summer and a lower than normal percent forage diet than I would like because we had to stretch the corn silage. ReproducƟon has held preƩy good with the summer heat. I can’t wait to see how the cows perform with 2019 corn silage and feeding the RECAL PLUS. I have been very happy with the RECAL probioƟcs and would highly recommend it to all dairymen. It’s not an expense when you see a return on your investment.”

and also examined udder health for average linear score, infection rate and mastitis cases within the herds. “Both results showed the same pattern,” Godden said. “We have signicantly lower levels of BBC and better udder health in composted or dried recycled manure solids compared to green or digested. But there was no processing effect on new intramammary infections or cases of clinical mastitis.” The implication of achieving these results on a dairy farm is economical. “Herds using mechanical dryers or drum composting may have better success with lower BBC and better udder health, but these are expensive investments,” Godden said. “We haven’t sorted out the economics and that’s something that needs to be asked.” In regards to sand, Godden spoke of a study that included 92 new-sand herds and 55 recycled-sand herds. The results focused on organic matter and dry matter as predictors of BBC. “A farmer’s goal would be to aim for the best,” Godden said. “In new sand, organic matter should be equal or less than 1.5% and dry matter should be greater than 95%. It is fair and doable to hold recycled sand to the same thresholds.” When a farmer purchases sand, they should consider the type of material they are purchasing, including low organic matter and high dry matter contents, and a consistent, appropriate texture and size. In an ideal scenario, 80% of the particles would be between 0.1 and 1 millimeter, said Godden. “To sum it up, organic matter and dry matter are important to pay attention to,” she said. “Keeping the sand in a room or under a roof is important. That
all makes sense.” There are quality factors that can be controlled in bedding prior to its use. But once the bedding is in stalls, there are management choices farmers should make to maintain quality as best as possible to reduce BBC and uphold udder health in the herd. “Frequent, daily addition would be ideal,” said Godden of placing bedding in the stalls. “We need correct stall design and dimensions. We need to remove wet, soiled bedding. And we also need to scrape alleyways, avoid overcrowding and have good ventilation.” Managing composted bedding packs is different because of the bedding system. Godden’s colleagues have developed guidelines for proper management, recommending sawdust or ne wood shavings as the preferred bedding choice. The pack should be aerated twice daily at least 10 inches into the bedding, and farmers should liberally apply new bedding. “You need a lot of fresh bedding to keep it dry,” Godden said. “Just like with the other systems, you need an excellent milk prep routine (to promote udder health).” Dairy farmers are encouraged to submit samples of their bedding to the University of Minnesota’s veterinary diagnostic laboratory as a rst step in better managing their bedding source. “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it,” Godden said. By understanding how bedding types and management of such types inuences BBC and udder health, farmers can improve their on-farm procedures to create a better environment for their herd.

Get to know Clara Thompson, of Plainview, Minnesota
Parents: Holly and Donny Thompson Tell us your favorite experience of your daughter helping with chores. I love spending time with my kids, especially in the milking parlor. Clara and I (Holly) currently milk most nights together. When she was young, Clara would ride with me in the eld. When her older siblings, Nick and Katie, were in elementary school and Clara was a toddler, she was my shadow. There were several nights during harvest when I put the older two to bed after milking, but she would claim she was not tired. So, we would go out to the eld. She would rst sit in the buddy seat and ask a million questions, then sit on the oor and play with her blankie and then climb up to lay across my lap and she would be out like a light. Donny would want to take her in to the house when he came for the next load, but there was something so peaceful about having her there with me. To this day, she is quite often the one who brings me peace when I am most frustrated.
What qualities does your daughter have that benet the farm? Clara is a gentle soul with a strong mind and body. She is very good with the animals – gentle, yet does an awesome job with things like treatment, vaccinations and sorting. Clara can lift almost any newborn calf and carry it in to get fully dried and fed. She loads 30 gallons of milk for the pasteurizer twice a day, carries multiple pails of feed and can push a fresh heifer into the parlor for me. Clara is highly intelligent and pushes herself to be the best she can be with school, activities and looking to the future. She can handle nearly any task we ask of her. She really is great with cows, youngstock and crop work. Student: Clara Thompson What are your responsibilities on the farm? On an average day, I feed calves twice a day at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. I also milk cows at 4 p.m. When I am not in school, I also help with vaccinations, pregnancy checks, hoof-trimming, dehorning, bedding and other tasks as needed. Thompson is a senior at Plainview-Elgin-Millville High School. I was 4 years old and very intrigued. I would wander alone up to the parlor and try my best to post-dip cows on my 5-gallon pail. I remember one of our employees asked me to leave because he was afraid I would get hurt, but I was stubborn and came back night after night to post-dip cows. When I was 8 years old, I began helping my sister feed calves. It was a suggestion made by my parents after I complained I was bored one too many times. Two years later, my mom noticed a dramatic increase in our somatic cell count. She made the decision to let go of our hired help and teach my siblings and I how to milk the cows alongside her and my dad. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I will complete chores that are not time sensitive (like feeding grain) and start milking a little earlier. We also try our best to get our slower milking cows in the parlor at the same time. I will feed calves a little earlier too. If I have to leave earlier, like for 4-H, I will wait to feed calves until I get back. My mom plays a huge role in all of this. If I have to leave, she is willing to milk on her own while I am away and start feeding calves if I cannot make it home soon enough. How has working on the farm shaped your character? I have been taught to be patient, hardworking, honest and a team player. I could have learned these values anywhere, but they are naturally learned here on the farm where they are used every day.
What do you love most about farm life? I love how every day is different along with the friendships I have been able to make because of the farm. Most of all, I love watching a calf grow and develop into a strong milk cow. What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents/employer? My mom always says, “You can’t get ‘em done if you don’t get ‘em on,” when we are milking. Both my mother and father have always set a “work, then play” example for me and my siblings. What are your future plans? I plan to major in animal science at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. I would love to have a job centered around dairy, whether as a nutritionist, veterinarian or something else.

What is your favorite animal on your farm? My big red and white cow, Remy, and my show calf, Mare. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a vet so I get to be around cows. When I turn 14, I am going to be able to ride around with our vet. My dream is to work for Dr. Pol. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have a set-up like ours, but with 500 cows. I would have three barns for milking cows and a barn for dry cows and for heifers. I would have pasture for the heifers and about 1,500 acres to grow corn and hay. I would have at least 300 heifers. DCRC recognizes dairy herds with outstanding reproduction The Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) presented awards to 24 dairy operations that excel at reproductive efciency, fertility and well-implemented management procedures during its annual meeting, held Nov. 10-12, via a virtual format. DCRC’s Herd Reproduction Award judges considered many criteria when reviewing nalists’ applications, including pregnancy rate, voluntary waiting period, interbreeding intervals, heat detection, conception rate, value of reproduction and culling rate. The Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council is focused on bringing together all sectors of the dairy industry – producers, consultants, academia and allied industry professionals – for improved reproductive performance. DCRC provides an unprecedented opportunity for all groups to work together to take dairy cattle reproduction to the next level. DNR investigating manure spill near Cashton, Wisconsin The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is assisting with the investigation of a manure spill that occurred in northern Vernon County which resulted in a sh kill in Knapp Creek. On the evening of Oct. 30, land-applied manure from Mlsna East Town Dairy left the intended application site and ran into an unnamed tributary to the west of Knapp Valley Road in Westby. Manure ultimately entered Knapp Creek south of the Mlsna Dam. The dairy reported to the DNR an estimated 3,000 gallons of manure had left the eld. Immediately after the spill, DNR staff observed dead sh in the unnamed tributary owing south along Knapp Valley Road, as well as in Knapp Creek between Kelbel Road and McElhose Hollow Road. So far, DNR staff have reported 118 dead trout within this area. DNR staff has been onsite several times since Oct. 31. The investigation is ongoing. New program offers mental health, wellness resources to Wisconsin veterinarians The Wisconsin Veterinary Examining Board (VEB) has launched the Veterinary Professional Assistance Program (VPAP) and Work-Life Services, a condential program designed to help licensed veterinarians and certied veterinary technicians manage the physical and mental challenges associated with the profession. The program went into effect on Nov. 9, 2020. The VPAP is a professional assistance and wellness program for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. The program’s offerings include guidance and assistance with family issues, nding child and adult care, workplace concerns, legal and nancial issues, stress, health and wellness, and other issues. Examples of wellness issues include chemical dependence, psychiatric illness, professional burnout, and compassion fatigue. The VEB assumes all costs for the program, which was launched in partnership with Humana. According to a 2018 study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the veterinary profession has a disproportionality high suicide rate when compared to the general population, which may be caused by burnout, anxiety and depression. “The VEB recognizes that those in the veterinary profession experience extraordinary stress,” said Melissa Mace, executive director of the VEB. “Between working long hours, trying to maintain work-life balance, and carrying record high student debt, many of these professionals struggle with depression, compassion fatigue and burnout, and anxiety. The VPAP aims to provide resources to our veterinary medical community to help them combat these issues. DCRC Annual Meeting features digital technologies, genomics Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) members from 27 U.S. states, ve Canadian provinces and 26 countries gathered virtually, Nov. 10-12, for the group’s 2020 annual meeting. Nearly 300 attendees, representing reproductive physiologists, animal health researchers, dairy producers, bovine veterinarians, animal health suppliers and dairy industry partners, reected on the past, learned about present dairy reproduction technologies and gazed into the future of what lies ahead in improving dairy cattle fertility and animal welfare. “This year’s DCRC Annual Meeting showcased dairy cattle reproduction topics that capitalize on genomics, high-quality animal care, digital technologies and big data,” said DCRC Annual Meeting Program Chair Eduardo Ribeiro, University of Guelph associate professor in the department of animal biosciences. “With the virtual format, DCRC more than tripled the number of countries it typically reaches during its annual meeting.” All sessions were recorded, so DCRC Annual Meeting attendees may access the recordings. In addition, DCRC members may access all of the recorded research poster presentations. “While many presentations focused on reproduction strategies, we also addressed related topics, such as data analytics, economics, dry cow management, leadership development and personnel management practices,” added DCRC President Julio Giordano, Cornell University. “Our goal is to help attendees understand the available tools, protocols and technologies that may help improve dairy cattle fertility and dairy farm protability, and foster high standards of animal care.” Outgoing DCRC President Julio Giordano, Cornell University, passed the gavel to Mike Overton, Zoetis. Farm Center part of a multi-state effort focusing on farmer mental wellness The Farm Center at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is part of a new 12-state effort aimed at providing education, resources and support to farmers, agriculture service professionals and mental health care providers to mitigate farm stress and reduce suicide risk in rural communities. The multi-state initiative, led regionally by the University of Illinois and Illinois Extension, is supported by a Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network grant from the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). Over several years, the $7.2 million award will create and expand project-wide access to nancial, stress management and mental health resources for farmers and stakeholders. Wisconsin will receive over $400,000 to provide education and support to farmers, ag-related businesses and mental health and healthcare providers. In partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension, the Farm Center will create farmer focus groups, develop mental health provider trainings, and support other activities focusing on farmer mental health. “We are excited to join UW-Madison’s Division of Extension in this unique collaboration to help farmers and their families overcome mental health-related challenges,” said Jayne Krull, director of the DATCP’s Wisconsin Farm Center. “Although the Farm Center offers many services designed to help farmers resolve a variety of challenges, we’ve been getting more and more calls from farmers in distress, and we continue to seek funding and resources to address this growing need.” “As stress among farmers continues to run high, we are excited to work with the Wisconsin Farm Center to help farmers and their families overcome mental healthrelated challenges,” added Joy Kirkpatrick, an outreach specialist at the UW Center for Dairy Protability. “Low prices and uncertainty for many primary farm and food products over the last ve years have created hardship and stress for many in rural communities, and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has only compounded those stress levels.” The grant plan also calls for the Farm Center to collaborate in the development of regional meetings bringing agriculture service and mental health professionals together to learn from each other, as well as develop a Counseling Voucher Best Practices document to share with other states. Producers can complete their survey securely online at agcounts.usda.gov. “The data provided by producers will help federal and state programs provide support to farmers across the country,” said Dan Lofthus, Minnesota State Statistician, “We hope every producer who receives this survey will take the time to respond. Producers benet when there are data available to help determine accurate loan rates, disaster payments, crop insurance price elections, and more. Without data, agencies such as USDA’s Risk Management Agency or Farm Service Agency may not have enough information on which to base their programs.” Within the next few weeks, NASS representatives will contact selected Minnesota growers to arrange telephone interviews to complete the surveys. NASS safeguards the privacy of all respondents and publishes only aggregate data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identied as required by federal law. State- and national-level results from the December 1, 2019 Agricultural Survey will be published in the Crop Production Annual Summary and the quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to be released Tuesday, January 12, 2021. County-level results for corn and soybeans will be published on the NASS Quick Stats database (quickstats. nass.usda.gov) in February 2021. Registration for Minnesota’s estimated 18,000 feedlots moves to online service Livestock feedlot owners and operators can now register their feedlots and manure storage areas online with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). Minnesota’s estimated 18,000 registered feedlots with 50 or more animal units, or 10 or more located in a shoreland area, must be registered with the state. They must update their feedlot information with the MPCA or delegated county feedlot program every four years. The next deadline for updating feedlot registration is Dec. 31, 2021. The MPCA’s new online feedlot registration system replaces the previous paper and e-mail forms process. The new, quick and easy service can be accessed 24/7 using a computer, smart phone, or mobile device. To register, users must provide basic feedlot information such as location, type of operation, and number of livestock. Minnesota feedlot permits are necessary only for feedlot construction or expansion with 300 or more animal units, for feedlots needing to correct pollution problems, or for large feedlots — 1,000 or more animal units. Counties also may require feedlot permits or conditional use permits. About 1,200 large feedlots in Minnesota have permits, which meet the registration requirement; separate registration is not necessary. Registration helps the MPCA to identify pollution hazards and work with feedlot owners to manage environmental impact. It also helps in budgeting for technical and nancial assistance for livestock producers. Some counties delegated to administer the MPCA’s feedlot program may continue to register feedlots and manure storage areas with paper forms.
