Hat-trick for University of Minnesota dairy judging team U of M wins NAILE for third straight year By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Like a welloiled machine, the University of Minnesota dairy judging team took the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) Collegiate Judging Contest by storm Nov. 5 in Louisville, Ky. For the third consecutive year, a team of Golden Gophers earned the top spot among the collegiate teams competing in the contest. Minnesota’s 2017 NAILE judging team consisted of four juniors, Haely Leiding of Fountain, Minn., Trent Dado of Amery, Wis., Krista Styer of Menomonie, Wis., and Brooke Roberts of Whitelaw, Wis. They are coached by Dr. Les Hansen, Scott Ellinghuysen, Alicia Thurk and Eric Houdek. “We really enjoy competing in the contest in Louisville,” Hansen said. He has coached dairy judging teams at Minnesota since 1981. “Besides the fact that we consistently do very well there, it’s just a very peaceful, low-key contest.” The NAILE contest consisted of 10 classes, a heifer and cow class each of Ayrshires, Brown Swiss, Guernseys, Holsteins and Jerseys. Throughout the day, the team from Minnesota consistently placed high in the various breeds on their way to winning the 13-team contest, winning the Jersey and Guernsey portions of the contest, placing fourth in the Holstein classes and sixth is both Ayrshires and Brown Swiss. In oral reasons the Minnesota team placed second.

In addition to their current winning streak, teams from Minnesota have won the NAILE contest six times in the past eight years. Hansen said that of all his duties at the university, coaching the dairy judging teams each year is by far his favorite. “This is a great group of students, they enjoy competing as a team,” Hansen said. “They have a lot of fun together and really enjoy what they are doing.” Overall, Roberts placed second in the NAILE contest, and was tenth is the oral reasons portion. In addition, she won the Jersey breed division and placed fourth in the Brown Swiss breed, while placed third in the Guernsey breed and ninth in the Jersey breed at the NAILE contest. Styer placed seventh in reasons, fth in the Holsteins and eighth in both
Guernseys and Jerseys. Leiding placed sixth overall in the NAILE contest, and added a second place nish in the Guernseys and a sixth place nish in the Ayrshires. “Louisville is a great contest,” Dado said. “There is great diversity in the breeds, and in the classes, as well. Some classes are very able to be placed, and others had you thinking right down to the nal minutes. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere overall, a great contest with great cows.” Roberts and Dado were both members of all three national teams for Minnesota, and have ended their competitive judging careers, while Steyer and Leiding are looking forward to continuing judging next fall. In Harrisburg, the Minnesota team, which included Roberts, Dado and Leiding, placed second overall, as did the Minnesota team that competed in Viroqua and included Styer. Roberts, who studies agricultural communications and marketing, was a late-comer to the sport of dairy judging, not beginning her career until she was in high school, although she had competed in livestock judging since the third grade. “It’s an interesting sport,” Roberts said of judging. “It’s intense, and there is such an unknown aspect. It’s addictive, and you just want to be right all the time.” Dado, an animal science major focusing on ruminant nutrition, is drawn to dairy judging because of the networking opportunities that develop and the relationships he can build with other dairy enthusiasts. “I’m kind of unique in that while I appreciate good cows, that’s not my favorite aspect of judging,” Dado said. “I like building a relationship with my team members, and meeting members of other teams and the farmers that host us for practices. It’s a great way to learn more about the dairy industry.” Styer said she focuses on the cows in front of her to avoid nervousness in contests. “I try to get a really good rst impression of each animal as the classes come in,” Styer said of how she
comes to her placings. “I try to get a good look from every angle. Sometimes they come together easily, and other times you just have to go with your gut feeling.” Competing at the collegiate level takes a great deal of work, time and dedication for the students, while balancing judging practice with their classes. “We start working with the team in the fall of our sophomore year, and then in the spring we spend a lot of time working with our reasons,” Roberts said. “Then the fall of your junior year, you compete for a spot on the team. We travel to farms for practices every weekend from the time school starts throughout the season. We see a lot of classes before we get to the contests.” “I really enjoyed my rst year competing in
collegiate dairy judging,” Styer said. “The biggest difference from judging in 4-H is the changes in presenting oral reasons. You learn to expand on your reasons, describe the cows in more detail and more accurately. I really love giving reasons.” Hansen credits the dairy farmers who open their doors to the judging team, providing the opportunity to practice. On the way to Kentucky, the team spent two days practicing at six different farms in Iowa. “These farmers open their arms to us,” Hansen said. “These kids couldn’t do this well if the farmers didn’t host us. We are so appreciative of the great breeders that present us good classes to teach and learn from. They all really believe in what we are doing and are so helpful.”

UWRF dairy judging team places second overall at NAILE Falcons take high reasons team By Brittany Olson

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – For Erica Helmer of Plymouth, Wis., Clint Irrthum of Wanamingo, Minn., Matthew Kramer of St. Cloud, Wis., and Kaila Wussow of Cecil, Wis., similar judging styles, years of combined experience and a common love for the dairy cow helped to propel them to place rst in the reasons portion and second place overall at a major judging contest. The foursome represented the University of Wisconsin-River Falls at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) intercollegiate dairy judging contest in Louisville, Ky., held the rst weekend of November. Coaches Steve Kelm, professor of dairy science at UWRF, and dairy farmer Mary Holle of Baldwin, Wis., guided the team along the way. Not only did the team place second overall, behind the University of Minnesota, they took rst in reasons, as well. After placing fourth overall at the Accelerated Genetics contest in September, held in Viroqua, Wis., UWRF was ready to do its very best on the shavings. “The mood going into the contest this year was nervous, yet excited,” Kramer said. “Ironically, I have known Erica and Kaila for quite some time through judging, showing and Wisconsin Junior Holsteins activities. I met Clint as a freshman through Dairy Club and mutual friends. It is just interesting how things come together over time.” Wussow echoed Kramer’s thoughts, adding that they knew they had the chance to do well. “Erica, Matthew and I grew up judging against each other in 4-H and FFA. We always were relatively close in placings at competitions and had similar judging styles, [and] when we added Clint we knew we strengthened our team even further as he has a great eye for cattle,” Wussow said. “We knew we had the abilities, we just had to hone the additional skills we practiced throughout the
season and apply them to be as successful as possible.” Helmer said their earlier contest in Viroqua helped to polish their reasons, as well. “After getting the rust off our reasons at Viroqua earlier this fall, I had a good feeling as we came in to Louisville. We practiced Wednesdays and had occasional long practices on Saturdays that allowed us to ne tune our reasons and add some nishing touches,” Helmer said. The team practiced at least once a week, sometimes twice depending on the day and when the next contest was, at a local farm to judge several classes and then take notes to work on reasons for one or two classes. “We had practice every Wednesday night and some Saturdays,” Irrthum said. When the results were announced, Irrthum came in fth overall with Wussow coming in at eighth place and Helmer at 11th. Wussow was also fourth in reasons, and Helmer placed fth. “I was a little off of my game, and did not do quite as well as I would have liked to. I was very excited, however, for my teammates. They all individually had something to be extremely proud of,” Kramer said. The whole team was excited to place rst in oral reasons. “When we were hearing the team results for the reasons portion, as the placings got higher and higher, I was actually kind of shaking. I had known that we all had improved from earlier this fall at Viroqua, but it was still surreal when they announced the University of WisconsinRiver Falls as the top reasons team,” Kramer said. “There was stiff competition from many prestigious universities, and it was simply exhilarating to come out on top, even if we did not win the contest overall.” Wussow said it was indescribable to do so well. “Before that, we had just had a hunch that we could do well but this proved it. We were very proud of one another and are thankful for our coaches, Dr. Kelm and Mary Holle, for pushing us outside our comfort zones to continuously improve ourselves and each other this year,” Wussow said. “It is humbling to see all of the hard work we’ve put in since a young age start to really show as we start a new

level of judging competitions.” Dairy judging has taught them valuable life skills. Irrthum said learning to evaluate dairy cattle has improved his decision-making abilities. “I have learned how to make decisions and be able to explain my thoughts justifying how I made the decision. Additionally, I have learned how to improve my public speaking abilities through oral reasons,” Irrthum said. Helmer added that judging has boosted her condence. “I have become a much more condent individual when communicating with others. Furthermore, judging has helped me in being able to reason out my decisions in other situations,” Helmer said. Moreover, they are thankful for the memories and friendships created as a result of dairy judging. “This activity has allowed me to be condent enough to make my own decisions, as well as prepare a reasoning to back myself when others may question it.
Oral reasons really have helped me improve my ability to communicate with others, as I need to explain my choices and back them up with factual information,” Wussow said. “It has also brought life-long friendships, which I am incredibly thankful for.” Dr. Kelm, who has served as the judging coach at UWRF for two decades, said that some of his closest friends are former students who judged, and that judging team participation gives the dairy industry individuals with skills that aren’t easily replicated. “We travel together, laugh together and sometimes learn more about each other than we ever imagined. The evaluation skills are certainly benecial, but the competitions and the practices are really about life skills,” Kelm said. “Can I communicate with others? Can I assemble a coherent argument? Can I accept that I worked really hard but came up short? The dairy industry needs graduates with a strong work ethic, communication skills and the ability to work in teams.”

Dealing with digital dermatitis Burgi suggests ways to lessen lesion cases By Krista Kuzma

Digital dermatitis is one type of hoof lesion of which dairy farmers should be aware. During a recent webinar put on by the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin, Karl Burgi, program director for Dairyland Hoof Care Institute, Inc., in Baraboo, Wis., discussed digital dermatitis and how to control it. Hygiene is a big factor for digital dermatitis. Burgi said animals with digital dermatitis have a higher leg hygiene score, which means dirtier feet and legs. “They put their feet in manure because it feels soothing to them. That’s why those claws are always dirtier,� Burgi said about cows with digital dermatitis. The Dairyland Initiative website reports
the same information. “Chronic exposure to moisture and manure is a prerequisite for the disease – hence it is more common in conďƒžnement-housed cattle, especially in freestalls with automatic scrapers,â€? the website states. There are a few stages of digital dermatitis. The ďƒžrst is M1, or the subclinical stage. “A lot of times we can’t see it on the cow. Many times, it’s located in between the heel balls. It’s erosion of the skin,â€? Burgi said. “If you use an effective hoof bath and have good hygiene, these will generally go away because it’s strictly on the surface. They haven’t migrated into the skin.â€? The second is the M2 stage. “This is the important thing to diagnose early,â€? Burgi said. “Bacteria is still on the surface. This is really the only time the antibiotic is effective. If we can treat at the early M2 stage ‌ my reoccurrence rate is less than 10 percent.â€? Then there is M2 with proliferation. “If we delay the treatment, the bacteria will migrate deeper into the skin. When we get to this, the treatment is virtually non-effective ‌,â€? Burgi said. The M4 stage is the result of the M2 not being treated in time. â€œâ€Ś Bacteria will surface again, so new infections must be prevented with regular hoof baths and good hygiene. This is where the hoof bath comes in,â€? Burgi said. Controlling digital dermatitis begins with close observation of heifers when they

come into heat and continuing to watch the herd. It must be promptly identiďƒžed and treated with a topical antibiotic the ďƒžrst time. The farm needs to have good hygiene and a low stress environment along with a footbath to control M4 lesions and prevent M1 lesions. Burgi said the ideal footbath is 12 feet long, 20 inches wide with 36-inch sides, 6-foot side panels and a 12-inch entrance and exit curbs. It should have 3.5 to 4 inches of solution. “Cows pass through the foot bath easier and defecate less if there are side walls because when the cow gets into a race she deďƒžnitely defecates,â€? Burgi said. There has also been a study done that shows 12-inch entrance curbs resulted in having the hind feet being dipped in the solution more often than 6-inch curbs, Burgi said. The pH of the footbath solution should be kept between 3.0 and 5.0, Burgi said, because a lower pH resulted in more M2 diagnoses. Although it depends on manure contamination, The Dairyland Institute suggests changing the solution every 100 to 300 cow passes. For a cleaning footbath solution, Burgi suggest three options. The ďƒžrst is 1 quart of mild soap and 4 quarts of bleach for every 50 gallons of water. The second is the same, but with 5 pounds of salt added. The third option is 2.5 gallons of sodium hypochlorite for every 50 gallons of water. For disinfecting, the ďƒžrst option is copper sulfate, followed by hoof zinc and formalin. The frequency of a footbath is dependent on the farm and the time of year. Burgi suggests using records of previous digital dermatitis cases to establish a footbath schedule. “Right now in the fall, it’s always a high risk period because the manure dries very quickly, making dirtier heels and claws ‌ it gives the bacteria the ideal environment to get going. Summer, digital dermatitis usually goes down because the sprinklers makes the manure more soupy and keeps the hooves cleaner,â€? Burgi said. Overall, Burgi said digital dermatitis is a lesion that can be kept at bay. “The success for me is in the details,â€? he said.

Funding available for sustainable agriculture projects AGRI grants help farmers test new ideas to drive sustainability The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is now accepting applications for Agricultural Growth, Research and Innovation (AGRI) Sustainable Agriculture and Demonstration Grants. Approximately $250,000 is available to fund projects that explore new ways of conserving natural resources, enhancing farm protability, increasing energy efciency, and improving life in rural communities. “No one cares more about Minnesota’s rural landscape than farmers and their families,” said Lt. Governor Tina Smith. “The Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Sustainable Agriculture and Demonstration Grant program is available to help farmers improve the sustainability and protability of their operations. I encourage all farmers interested in making changes to their operations to apply for a grant worth up to $25,000.” Farmer David Abazs hopes his grant funds will help demonstrate a cost-effective way to increase soil health on the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center School’s organic farm. Abazs is testing a variety of materials, including lime, wood ash, and biochar for their ability to affect soil chemistry and increase pH levels of the acidic soils in Lake County. “These elds have never been farmed before and are providing a great template to help us and other farmers,” said Abazs. “We’re trying to nd soil amendments that will help simultaneously meet pH goals and enhance soil health.” Previous grant rounds have funded projects exploring farm diversication, cover crops and crop rotation, conservation tillage, input reduction strategies, and alternative energies like wind, methane, and biomass. AGRI Sustainable Agriculture and Demonstration grantees must share their ndings. These are published annually in the MDA’s Greenbook, which provides a summary of each project along with results, management tips, and other resources. Applications from farmers receive priority, but the program also funds Minnesota nonprot and educational organizations as long as Minnesota farmers are meaningfully involved in the project. Projects may last two to three years. AGRI Sustainable Agriculture and Demonstration Grant applications are due by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I’m involved in 4-H, FFA and the Monroe County All-Breeds Junior Dairy Club.
Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? Because I have a passion for agriculture and the dairy industry. Dairy farming is something I’ve always been interested in doing. The Junior Dairy Club is my favorite of these activities because all of the kids who are involved can relate to dairy farming and showing cattle. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Showing my Brown Swiss at our county fair and being able to show at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair. What’s your favorite social media? I don’t have any personal social media accounts. I don’t have the time for them. I have done stuff on our FFA chapter’s Facebook page. What are your career aspirations? I would like to come home and take over our family farm. I’m the fourth generation. We are in the process of building a new freestall barn and parlor to replace our tiestall barn. I am looking at going to college in River Falls, Platteville or Madison. I’d like to major in animal science and minor in accounting. I’m also interested in pursuing training in agricultural mechanics. I’d like to get a master’s degree and possibly a PhD in an agriculturerelated area. I own 23 head of registered Brown Swiss and 156 acres of land. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? I’ve learned how to be a leader by participating in these activities and how to work to accomplish certain projects and ideas. I’m the vice president of our FFA chapter and I’ve served as a vice president in my 4-H club. I’ve also learned how to manage my time to get things done. I have learned a lot of practical skills about things like showing cattle. Who do you look up to? I look up to my dad and my grandpa. They started our farm and are teaching me how to do everything so that I can take it over and run it on my own someday. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I was born so early I was only given a 5 percent chance of surviving. I was born the end of November and wasn’t supposed to be due until March. The ďƒžrst 14 days of my life, the doctors didn’t expect me to live at all. I spent six months in the NICU in Rochester, Minn. My grandpa likes to tell the story of the ďƒžrst time I showed a calf when I was 4 at our local Brown Swiss Canton show. My calf won the class, but I told the judge I wanted a red ribbon because it was my favorite color.

I help with chores most mornings before school and at nights after school. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would change the future outlook for agriculture. I would encourage politicians to look at ways to increase milk prices for dairy farmers and ways to make things easier for farmers to make a living.

Kelsey Holst 12 years old Seventh grade When do you do chores and what chores do you do? I do chores on the weekends and after school. I milk cows and feed calves. What are your favorite and least favorite chores? I like feeding calves because it is one of the easiest chores to do, and I get to see all the cute babies. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a DNR ofďƒžcer because I love animals. I want to protect wild animals and be around wolves. If you had your own farm what would it look like? It would be the same as my family’s farm, but I would have about 10 meat goats. I would also build a barn for the cattle in the pasture and ďƒžnish the windbreak. It would also be super clean. What is the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? Lots of kids don’t have the experience of growing up on a farm. I think farm kids are responsible. I also like that I get to be by animals. I love animals. What is your favorite dairy treat? White milk, rocky road ice cream and cottage cheese. What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the winter? I like staying warm and having snowball ďƒžghts.

Tyler Holst 9 years old Second grade When do you do chores and what chores do you do? I do chores whenever I have time after school and on the weekends. I feed hay to calves, bed calves, scrape the holding pen, fold rags and water heifers. What are your favorite and least favorite chores? My favorite chore is feeding the heifers and bringing the milk down to the calf barn. We have to use the skidloader to do both of those chores. My least favorite chore is folding the rags we use to wipe the cows during milking because it takes forever. I also do not like bedding, because the dust from the straw hurts my lungs and the bales are hard to put in pens. Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? Tell us about it. I have a few favorites: Adrian, Trudy and Jupiter. They are cows that are very friendly and are nicer than the other cows. Elaine, the yearling I showed in 4-H, is also one of my favorites.

Free farmland rental agreement meetings are being provided by the University of Minnesota Extension. Farm land rental rates have started to lower as corn and soybean prices continue lower in 2017. Determining a fair farm rent agreement is a challenge in today’s economy with current signicantly lower corn and soybeans prices in 2017 compared to recent record corn and soybean prices and record farm land values. Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satises the land owner and the farmer is a challenge. David Bau and Nathan Hulinsky, Extension Educators in Ag Business Management, will provide several ways; by examples, fact sheets and worksheets to determine a fair farm land rental rate for both parties. Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farm land values and sales, a worksheet that will help determine a fair rental agreement. Input costs for 2018 will be presented along with current 2018 corn and soybean prices. Worksheets will examine 2018 costs and what is affordable rent that a farmer will be able to pay in 2018, the rate of return to the landlord at current market values and examine exible rental agreements. The International Silo Association is having regional meetings. These annual events enable ISA members, silo companies, and feed handling equipment companies to gather and celebrate their accomplishments, further education, and plan for the future. The regional meetings will be held in Ontario, Canada, the Northeast, Pennsylvania, and in the Midwest, Wisconsin. The meetings serve as an excellent opportunity to look back at the year’s activities and sales, and to look ahead to where the industry is headed. The continuing theme at all meetings will be Feed automation and the future of the dairy industry. With the shrinking numbers of dairies each year, we feel it is important to discuss this issue. We are bringing in experts to give us an insight on how the Tower Silo and Feed Automation will impact the dairy industry of the future. The Northeastern Regional Meeting held in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania starts with an ISA Board of Directors Meeting on November 28. On Nov. 29, regional meeting will start with the Annual ISA Business Meeting. It will be followed by a presentation by Kurtis Lamiere from Valmetal, Inc. on their “Autorationâ€? system. There will also be an Awards Presentation. The awards given each year include the “Honorary Member Awardâ€? and the “Zur Craineâ€? Award. The recipients are individuals who deserve recognition for their dedication and voluntary contributions toward the continued success of this association as we serve the tower silo and related farmstead equipment industry. The Waterloo, Ontario Meeting is on Friday, Dec. 1 with a presentation by Dave Rose from Valmetal, Inc. on their “Autorationâ€? system. The Midwest meeting will be held in Madison, Wisconsin on Wednesday, December 6. The meeting will feature local experts speaking on Feed Automation and the use of a Tower Silo. Key topics will include: property ownership, wills, federal estate tax, Iowa inheritance tax, gifting, trusts, healthcare planning, and gifting strategies. O’Rourke will also talk about how families can start conversations about estate planning, transitioning a farm or other small business, including building a team of professionals to assist in the process. “We had no intention of putting in anything other than conventional freestalls when we were planning to build. In fact, our plans were pretty much complete, but we decided to tour one more farm. That farm had just added onto a barn. Everything in the barn was exactly the same, except on the new half they had installed freestalls from TJ’s. They told us they often come into the barn and all the TJ stalls are full and all the others empty. We came home and decided it was the way to go. We’ve put in around 600 of them since then and love them. We’re glad we toured one more farm! Most importantly, the cows love them too.�
