Robert and Lorna Kramer with their children, Chasan and Chantelle Fountain, Minn. Fillmore County 30 cows How did you get into farming? Robert: I grew up in Preston and my dad had a dairy farm. I went into the service after high school. When I returned, I rented a farm and started dairy farming. Not too long after, I bought our current farm site. Lorna: I grew up in Wyoming in a uranium mining town. I married into dairy farming. Robert and I were married in 1988. What do you enjoy most about dairy farming? Robert: I like being outside, especially putting in the crops and taking them out. Lorna: I love being out in the country with the animals. I don’t help in the barn much anymore, but I have a big garden I take care of and I do lots of canning and freezing. What is the biggest challenge you have encountered in your dairy farming career? The ups and downs in the milk price. The ups don’t last long enough and the lows last too long. What’s the best part about having a herd that is mostly Guernseys? They’re gentle and nice to work with. The components are better, too. They don’t eat as much as Holsteins and other breeds so it’s easier to produce the feed. The crops we harvest from our 80 acres go to feed our herd. What is your favorite tool? Robert: I like my battery operated drill because I can pick it up and go do something easily. The skidloader and the Gator also save a lot of back work. What is your favorite dairy product? Robert and Lorna: We like anything with cheese. We’re not picky. We also eat a lot of sour cream. Chantelle: I like milk. What do you like to do when not doing chores? Lorna: I like to paint, knit and crochet. We also like to get away for a little bit. We recently started to go camping. Chantelle: I like to show cattle. Now that I’m not in 4-H anymore, I show in the open class at our county fair. How do you celebrate Thanksgiving? We have dinner with a big turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stufng, cranberries and pie. We try to gather as much family around as we can. Lorna: Robert and I have one other child, Kami. I also have two other older children, Cori and Amber. We usually take naps after we eat and sometimes play games.

A) On the farm, I’m thankful for good crop yields, in spite of the dry weather. And the crop prices are good. I’m thankful for the years I’ve been able to dairy and develop our herd. Family wise, I’m thankful for my family. They’re all healthy and the kids are doing very well in college.
A) I’m thankful that we still have a farm, and that we had some crops – not total failures. Family wise, I’m thankful for my wife, Susan. I’m thankful for the rest of my family that helps out when I need it. I could call all my neighbors family too.
A) On the farm, I’m thankful for all the people who work with us. We have a diverse group – different cultures, men, women, young and old. We’re thankful for all these people. In my family, I’m thankful that my son and daughter both were able to get internships this summer in their eld of studies. Annaliese is going into nursing and Edric is in accounting.
B) I’m thankful for my wife, Kim, and my kids, Alysha, Allan, and Aaron. They’ve always been supportive and very helpful on the farm. Alysha (Coffman) is a kindergarten teacher in Park River North Dakota; Allan is a senior at Augustana in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Aaron is a sophomore at Concordia in Moorhead. C) I praise them and compliment them on their achievements. D) We have a full Thanksgiving meal with the family at our house. Then, the day after, we go to the chalet at Fort Ridgely State Park (between Fairfax and Sleepy Eye). We have a big family reunion on my wife’s side, the Kobergs. There are eight kids in the family so there might be 50 to 100 people there, depending on who can come. Weather permitting, we go horseback riding and golf. Otherwise we play board games, card games, etc. E) After 30 years of dairying, my brother, Ricky, and I decided to disperse the dairy herd. We sold a heifer and our last three cows at the Minnesota Fall Harvest Sale in Hutchinson
B) My parents. We had a large family – nine kids - and they always tried to keep us together as a family and do things together. C) I’d like to do more than I can. Just to say thank you and try to tell them how much I appreciate things they’ve done for me. Hopefully, someday I can return the favor twicefold. D) We have a big meal with family. We travel to our sister’s, Tom and Margaret Davidson, over at North Clayton. E) We farm 237 acres with 137 open and the rest woods. We like to try and concentrate on breeding registered Holsteins and Jerseys. My wife is an elementary teacher at North Crawford Schools. I started here in 1993 and was an AI technician previously for 15 years, for East-Central Select Sires. Saturday, November 17. We have 70 head of young stock left. We’ll sell them as springers—or when the feed’s gone, whichever comes rst. We’ll continue to crop farm, but we’ll be able to take some long weekends now.

B) My wife, Suzanne, who is a dance teacher. She’s really a happy person and I need that. I’m also thankful for my parents, neighbors and friends. C) Many times it’s simply by saying thank you. Otherwise I’ll do others a favor when they need it, especially when someone is feeling down. That’s when I really like to help. A lot of times it’s the little things that count the most. D) We gather for a meal and then we sit around visiting and telling stories. We used to travel to see family, but now our family dynamics are changing and we usually stay home. Since our gatherings are smaller than they used to be, we also sometimes invite friends over. E) Our family farms in partnership with Roger Schroeder and his family. Not only do we farm, together, but we also socialize and bounce ideas off one another. We farm about 600 acres. Our land is very hilly with many acres being wooded land. Many elds are 1.5 acres. My wife, Suzanne, and I have two kids, Annaliese and Edric, who are both 21.
A) Farm wise, we are, of course, most thankful for a safe, timely, and bountiful crop in an uncertain weather year. Family wise, we are always most thankful for our boys who are healthy, helpful and enjoyable to be around. This year we are especially thankful for a kid who got his driver’s license. It makes the schedule juggling much easier. B) We are thankful for God who walks beside us in this journey of life every day. We are thankful for our parents who instilled in us work ethic, values and a love of farming. Professionally, we are thankful for Wayne and Dee Kessler and Gene and Joy Schmidt who were the neighbor dairy farmers where Mike learned to love cows and who sold him cows when he started milking. And, for Dale and Jeanne Schauer who taught Mike much, especially the value of consistent routine in successful dairying. Our kids are thankful for Grandpa Lux who does all things fun with them and for cousin Al who made them fans of green tractors and hanging around cows. C) I like to bake something, usually a pie. D) We are blessed with lots of local family. So, in between morning and evening chores, we join family somewhere and eat too much food. The Lux clan is fond of homemade ice cream compliments of our cows. E) We, with part time employees and our boys, Tim and Greg, milk 130 cows, raise a few market hogs, and farm 620 acres by Eden Valley and Cosmos.

We have been using some sexed semen, but still we are at about 65 percent heifers compared to bulls. B) We are thankful for high milk prices. Without milk where it is it would be a very difcult business to be in with the high feed costs. We are also thankful for our nutritionist Merlin Ryks with Nelson Dairy Consultants. He has helped us become better dairymen. He has helped us get more milk out of our cows which has allowed us to be more protable. C) The best way for us to show thanksgiving to people is to spend time with friends and family. That is something that does not cost anything but is very simple and means a lot to people. D) Generally on Thanksgiving we take time to visit another local dairy. During harvest things get hectic and we do not get time to visit with them and this is a great day to visit with them and show appreciation. Generally we also have dinner with family at noon. E) Our farm is very diversied. We milk about 75 cows, but are currently expanding to 200. My parents, Dale and Sharon, are the owners and operators. I graduated from Iowa State in 2010 and have been working at the farm since. We farm about 800 acres of owned and rented land. We grow corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and have some pasture. We also feed our Holstein steers and an additional 90 head of regular feeder cattle.

It brought the swelling down, and she got over her problem with no mastitis,” says Randy, adding that the EX-92 Pixie, with a 94pt. mammary and 305-day record over 31,000, went Grand at Minnesota State Fair. Pixie then went on to be Grand Champion of both the Open and Junior International Guernsey Shows at the 2012 World Dairy Expo—something the Petersons have worked for since starting their herd in the 1980s.

THE CROPCUTTER® SYSTEM ROTO-CUT MODEL The CropCutter® rotary feeding and cutting system is unique to the BR7070. This system uses up to 15 knives to cut crop as it is fed into the baler to create heavy bales with maximum density. In silage, it results in enhanced fermentation. In straw, it results in easier spreading and increased absorbency. No matter what the crop, bales made with CropCutter put more crop in every bale — translating to fewer bales per field, fewer bales to transport and store. That’s productivity. The CropCutter® system produces bales that are more dense and heavy due to the smaller particle length. In silage, this increased compaction means less air in the bale for better fermentation and outstanding feed quality.
