Unique partnership receives big award
Thickes, Crowleys named farm family of the year By Krista Kuzma

LA CRESCENT, Minn. – Despite not being related to each other by blood, the Thickes and Crowleys have grown their relationship to become like family. This year, they were named the Winona County Farm Family of the Year. Art and Jean Thicke have been farming together with the Crowleys – Chad and Melissa along with their children, Dylan, 14, Jessica, 11, and Erin, 9 – since 2003 on their 94-cow dairy near La Crescent, Minn. Art and two of his brothers started farming in the late 1970s, taking over for their dad, who purchased the farm in 1928. “I liked working with cattle and I’ve always had Ayrshires. The farm has had them since the early days,â€? Art said. After working in a factory for ďƒžve years after high school, Art knew dairy farming was his true career. Jean grew up in La Crosse, Wis. Although she did not have an agricultural background, she liked the outdoors. Other than a short time working off the farm, Jean has always been full-time on the dairy. After one of Art’s brothers moved

to a different profession, he and Jean farmed with his other brother until 1994. At that time, Art’s brother left and Art’s nephew joined the operation after graduating from high school.
The plan was for the nephew to take over the farm; however, he and his wife were killed in a motorcycle accident in 2003. Despite the tragedy, the Thickes

breaks to nurse the kids and they would play in the calf pens when they were toddlers.” All three of the Crowley kids said they have liked their time on the dairy and have developed special bonds with several of the milking cows. Their current favorite is Number 9, who they refer to as Numby. “She loves the kids,” Art said about Numby. “She seeks them out and will eat an apple core right out of their hands.” The partnership has also been successful because of the two couples’ shared philosophy on farming. “We try to keep it as simple as we can,” Art said. “It seems with a lot of the technology its more work having it than not.” One way they have kept farming simple is by grazing their herd. For the past 34 years, the cows have eaten most of their forage from the pastures along the hills and ridges of the Thickes’ farm, which sits upon the ridge tops that overlook the Mississippi River. Every 12 hours, the cows are given new pasture. “That way the cows do a lot of the work. They haul their own manure, they do their own feeding and they’re healthy,” Art said. the ownership of the farm. The Thickes knew Melissa’s parents, and two of Melissa’s siblings milked for Art and Jean so they could focus on their nephew’s funeral. Melissa had grown up on a dairy as one of 10 children. While studying at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in her pursuit to become a veterinarian, she met Chad, who was working towards a path to farm, but not dairy. “I introduced him to dairying by taking him home to my farm,” Melissa said. Eventually, the two both changed their career paths with a goal to dairy farm. They were one of six couples the Thickes invited to their farm to create a potential partnership. “We found they were a good t,” Art said about the Crowleys. “The main reason we went with them is they both wanted to farm. We thought that was important. It’s hard to have one spouse work off the farm.” Melissa and Chad felt the same way. “At the time, we already had one child. They were open to having the children on the farm,” Chad said. That was an important factor for the young couple. “I wanted the kids in the barn. I grew up that way,” Melissa said. “It worked out well. Over the years we had play pens and strollers. I would take

ConƟnued from AWARD | Page 3 them from nding the grass, which usually occurs in December. During the fall and winter months, pastures are supplemented with hay made over the summer. At most, each cow will eat six pounds of grain each day. “If I didn’t like something on the farm, I would change it to something I liked. If you’re going to be there every day, I thought I should have it in a way that I enjoy doing. I eliminated a lot of the tractor work because I would rather work with cows than tractors,” Art said. The farm consists of 524 acres. All of the 250 tillable acres are permanent pasture and has not had any tillage done to it since 1985. The rest of the farm is wooded land. Prior to 1985, the Thickes used to contour strip the land. “We’re trying to manage pasture for longevity. There’s lots of diversity [of grasses] in the pasture and as a result our cows are really healthy,” Art said. “Instead of trying to ght nature, … we let it go.” Grazing has also been economical. “It supports two families without off farm income,” Art said. “We don’t have a high rolling herd average, but we have a protable one.” Organic also t their philosophy. In 2004, the families made the transition, and in 2005, they began selling their milk as certied organic. Along with being humbled by the farm family of the year award, the Crowleys see it as an opportunity to share their story. “We’re not afraid of showcasing what we do and how we do it. We feel we farm a great way and are willing to teach other people of our generation,” Melissa said.

Chad agreed. “We see farms going away. It’s sad because rural life also disappears because of it. If we can keep cows on the land and people farming, we can keep rural America alive,” he said. The Thickes are proud of the Crowleys for their passion. “We are proud of the farm and that’s why I wanted it to continue. We had a
good life here and I wanted someone else to have the same experience,” Art said. Jean is happy to see kids on the farm, too. “Having kids on the farm has been nice. I’ve been proud of the way they have raised their kids on the farm,” Jean said. Chad and Melissa have been
grateful for the partnership with the Thickes. “It was a great way to get into farming, especially with the expense of farming. Working with someone who is established helps,” Chad said. “And the relationship has developed from there.” Despite not being related by blood, the Thickes and Crowleys have become family.

The Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin offered a webinar on Oct. 18 called “The Fundamentals for Good Hoof Health,” presented by Karl Burgi, program director of the Dairyland Hoof Care Institute, Inc. in Baraboo, Wis. “What can we do to improve hoof health on our dairies?” Burgi said. “We know it’s a problem at certain times.” The rst step is to know the three main types of hoof lesions: sole ulcers, white line lesions and digital dermatitis (DD), also known as hairy warts. Sole ulcers occur over 90 percent of the time on the outside claws of the rear feet, while DD is between the claw. When it comes to hoof trimming, dairy producers need to know what they are paying for, Burgi said. “If we measure hoof trimmings by the chips on the oor, we’re going down the wrong way,” Burgi said. He related it to someone getting a haircut. “It’s easy to shave the head and remove all the hair, but it’s much more difcult to work with the hair to make it look good,” he said. Burgi mentioned ve hoof trimming mistakes. The rst is trimming toes too short. A normal claw on a cow that is between 1,500 and 1,800 pounds has a dorsal wall length (the front of the claw) that is 3 inches long with an additional onefourth of an inch of sole thickness. “A claw that is over trimmed … is a big problem for lameness. A lot of cows that are picked up at the slaughterhouse have feet that are trimmed too short. It’s critical we get this right,” Burgi said. Excessive trimming and removal of the inside heel is the second mistake. “We should never see completely white feet … The more we take off the heel, the more of the angle we lose. Cows are toe animals. They need to walk on the toes because the toes have by far the best strength and can withstand a lot,” Burgi said. If there is too much heel removed, cows start to shift their weight on their foot, which can cause bruising or hemorrhaging and result in a sole ulcer. The third mistake is removing the axial, or inside wall of the toe. “Sometimes cows have a curl to the toe on the front. People take the grinder and take the inside wall away to straighten the claw out. This causes permanent damage. If your hoof trimmer puts the grinder between the toes, for me that’s a pink slip,” Burgi said. The fourth mistake is excess removal of the abaxial, or outside wall of the toe. “The wall is the supporting edge of the whole claw. The cow actually walks on the hoof wall. As soon as we remove the hoof wall, it’s like going into a building and thinning out all the posts because they get in the way,” Burgi said.
Trimming soles too thin is the fth mistake. “When we don’t have enough sole thickness, the whole structure inside [the foot] can get damaged. In some cases when heifers have thin soles before lactating or in the rst lactation, the bone structure doesn’t always completely develop,” Burgi said. Rather than asking a hoof trimmer “How many cows can you trim in a day?” Burgi suggests looking at whether the hoof trimming prevents or causes claw horn lesions, or if it is causing more lameness. “A good sign is that cows recover very quickly, but even the producers have a big responsibility. A cow should never wait for a hoof trimmer for lameness to be treated. Lameness should be treated on a daily basis,” Burgi said. Ways producers can help prevent lameness is by running an effective hoof bath to keep DD under control, creating an environment where cows lie down over 11 hours per day, having ooring that is secure for cows’ footing, overstocking no more than 15 percent, keeping time out of the pen to less than 2.5 hours per day, and using calm and appropriate cow handling procedures along with not overusing the crowd gate. “If you do all this and you still have a lameness issue, hoof trimming may be the problem,” Burgi said. Cows raised in the connement of freestall barns have different needs than those raised in the dry lots out West, Burgi said. Cows in freestall barns have extra growth on their outside heel. If not trimmed, it can result in sore ulcers, white line lesions and extra trauma, Burgi said. “We [usually] already have overgrowth on a lot of heifers prior to calving. If we don’t remove overgrowth, we already have the rst lesion that can occur in the rst 45-80 days of rst lactation,” Burgi said. That is why it is important to start hoof trimmings prior to rst calving. Burgi suggests a trimming schedule that includes every dry cow and springing heifer to be assessed and functionally trimmed eight to three weeks before calving. “When cows and heifers calve with perfect claws, they pass that stressful calving period, and we can go to the next trimming date with very little issues,” Burgi said. During the rst lactation, Burgi said hoof trimming should be done around 125 days in milk; however, that should be sooner if barns have mattresses or the oors are slippery. Second lactation and older cows in barns with mattresses should be trimmed at 80 days in milk while second lactation and older cows in sand-bedded barns should be trimmed at 125 days in milk. After that, evaluate every cow every 120-150 days in milk. Burgi also said it is important to treat lameness within 24 hours. “In the past, we’ve put it off too much. We need to approach lameness treatment like mastitis. [Treated within] 24 hours is a good goal. When we do that, the lesions will never be as severe, and the recovery is better and the permanent damage is greatly reduced,” Burgi said.

Dairy farmer leader receives prestigious Lyng Award North Dakota’s Jerry Messer Recognized for Contributions to Dairy Promotion The National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDB) honored Jerry Messer as the 2017 recipient of the Richard E. Lyng Award for his contributions and distinguished service to dairy promotion. Messer, a dairy farmer from Richardton, N.D., was recognized at the Joint NDB/National Milk Producers Federation/ United Dairy
Industry Association (UDIA) Annual Meeting in Anaheim, Calif. The award is named for former U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Richard E. Lyng, who played a critical role in implementing policies that led to the establishment of the NDB more than 30 years ago. The Lyng Award honors leaders who have made a signicant contribution to dairy promotion that benets the entire industry. “When you consider the qualities of leadership, including honesty, dedication, passion, foresight, strategic thinking and humility, Jerry demonstrates them all,” said Amber Horn-Leiterman, Wisconsin dairy
farmer and chair of NDB. Messer serves as chair of Midwest Dairy Association’s North Dakota Division Board and the North Dakota Dairy Promotion Commission, roles he’s held for 25 years. Since the early 2000s, Messer also served on Midwest Dairy’s corporate board, holding the position of chairman from 2008-17. Nationally, he’s been a member of the United Dairy Industry Association (UDIA) and Dairy Management Inc. (DMI) boards and held national leadership positions as DMI Treasurer and UDIA 2nd Vice Chairman. Since 2012, Messer has been Chairman of the National Dairy Council. In this role, he’s served as
a public face for youth wellness and the dairy checkoff’s Fuel Up to Play 60 program, an in-school initiative that promotes healthy eating and physical activity. Fuel Up to Play 60 was created in partnership with the National Football League and in collaboration with USDA. “According to Jerry, any idea that is good for today’s youth will also be good for dairy,” Horn-Leiterman said. As part of the Richard E. Lyng Award, the NDB will contribute a $2,500 scholarship in Messer’s name to North Dakota State University’s Animal Sciences Department. Yahara Pride Farms Field Day focuses on conservation

WAUNAKEE, Wis. – Yahara Pride Farms held a eld day featuring manure management and cover crops after harvesting corn silage on Oct. 24 at Gary and Nancy Endres’ G&N Endres Dairy Farm near Waunakee, Wis. in Dane County where they milk around 200 cows. The purpose of the eld day was to discuss how cover crops can help conserve soil and preserve water quality, as well as how manure application can affect these crops and the soil and water quality. University of WisconsinExtension educator Heidi Johnson facilitated the discussion and introduced Adam Dowling and Jeremy Ziegler of the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), who worked together to demonstrate the differences between no-till soil and conventionally tilled soil. Pieces of aggregate
of both types of soil were submersed in large beakers of water to illustrate how tillage disturbs the organic matter in soil, breaking up the naturally-occurring globulin particles that act as the glue that binds the soil particles together. After several minutes, the conventionally tilled aggregate had nearly dissolved in the water, while the no-till aggregate largely remained in-tact. “Good inltration is the key to soil stability,” said Ziegler, referring to the beaker holding the piece of no-till aggregate. “In a violent rain event, the no-till soil is going to hold together better because that natural globulin is undisturbed.” The pair went on to demonstrate with a rainfall simulator, which simulated an inch of rainfall on ve samples of soil with varied types of tillage and cover. how violent the impact of a raindrop can be on soil. After an inch of rainfall was simulated, Dowling and Ziegler explained the results to the crowd in attendance, showing not only rainfall that had runoff the samples, but also containers that collected the water that inltrated through the soil samples. In most case, the soil samples that had been no-tilled fared better than those that had been tilled conventionally, and those with cover crops established fared better yet. The only sample that acted outside of what normal expectations were was a no-tilled sample that had been recently drilled with winter wheat. “Even that little disturbance of drilling can impact the level of inltration and runoff that we can see in the soil,” Ziegler said. “That’s why it is
important to get cover crops established early in September.” Dowling explained the differences in the way the samples reacted. “One of the main differences between no-till and conventional tillage is the increased ltration,” Dowling said. “The water that inltrated the notill samples is cleaner water. There was also less runoff.” Ziegler continued to encourage those in attendance who do not practice no-till farming or cover cropping on their farms to begin small. “Think about the goals you have,” Ziegler said. “Do you want to build organic matter? Improve the inltration in your elds? Start small and nd out what works for you. You don’t have to commit to large amounts of acreage at one time.” Ziegler said it takes several years to the see the
full benets of no-till farming and cover cropping. “Historically, we’ve punished our soil enough with tillage,” Ziegler said. “It takes time for the soil to really switch over and heal. Sometimes it can be up to seven or eight years until we see a benet.” During the eld day, Johnson discussed the different types of cover crops, including brassicas, legumes and grasses. “Each of these different types of crops has a different type of rooting structure,” Johnson said. “What crop has been removed will play a big factor in what type of cover crop will work the best. grains following corn silage.” Johnson said it’s important to plant a cover crop that can get as big as possible in the fall before winter sets in. Kevin Shelley from the UW Nutrient and Pest Management Program presented ndings from research he conducted at the Arlington Agricultural Research Station regarding the use of winter rye following a corn silage harvest. Winter rye establishes a fast overwinter cover when planted in the fall and can prevent losses of soil and soil nutrients through runoff. In addition, winter rye adds the benet of providing a potential early-season forage crop for producers. “Using winter rye as a cover crop does not seem to affect the corn silage yield on the eld the next year,” Shelley said. “Terminating the rye about two weeks before planting the corn crop seems to help alleviate the possible negative effects on the soil and for the germinating corn plant.” Brian Luck, an assistant UW professor and extension specialist, along with Jessica Drewry, a postdoctoral researcher in the biological systems engineering department at UW-Madison, presented information on a study on different types of closing wheels used in spring planting on no-till soil. The types of wheels used included a Dawn Curvetine, a Yetter Paddle, a
Martin Spike and a standard rubber wheel. “We planted into ground with heavy crop residue,” Luck said. “We had elds in four areas of the state to have test plots of a variety of different soils prevalent in Wisconsin.” As far as emergence, the data from the different types of wheels in the different soils showed no statistical differences. Numerically, however, some differences were visible. The plots are just beginning to be harvested, so yield data is not yet available. Attendees were then welcomed to a eld to watch a demonstration of manure injection with a drilled cover crop that had been recently harvested for corn silage. Also available for viewing was a eld that was aerially planted by Damon Reabe of Dairyland Aviation. Reabe aerially planted barley as a cover crop in a standing eld of corn. The seed began to germinate prior to the corn being chopped for silage. Manure was injected into the soil following harvest of the silage. The benet of aerially seeding a cover crop is to allow for fewer trips made over the eld which leads to less compaction of the soil, as well as the cover crop establishing itself earlier. In addition to the soil preservation benets, this method reduces time, labor and fuel expense for the producer.

BARRON, Wis. – Imagine a land lled with Zebu cattle roaming the arid countryside, not fenced in, but herded from parcel to parcel by a small child, and only brought home at night to avoid predation by hyenas; where chickens scurry across dry, red soils, and where soybeans are considered a new crop compared to the elds of tea and coffee that have sustained farmers of this nation, upwards of 50 percent of which are women, for generations. In Tanzania of southeast Africa, this is everyday life. A life that several University of Wisconsin Extension agents got to live for two weeks this fall. Not only were they introduced to all the leaders of each village, but they were treated as the guests of honor and the best chairs were reserved for them. “Greetings are important there. We spent a lot of time on introductions,” Jergenson said. “We had to meet the village leaders before the farmer groups we were working with, and in some villages we actually had to sign a registry. It was all very formal.” They spent the most time in the southern highlands, meaning they didn’t get to experience the heat and humidity that were plaguing other parts of the country. Soybeans are a relatively new crop, with white corn, tea, rice and coffee being the primary crops. “Smaller farms grow coffee, while tea is grown and raised on large plantations,” Jergenson said. “The average farm size is between three to ve acres.” Zebu cattle are raised for meat, as are goats and chickens, and while they aren’t very eshy, they are hardy cattle that do well in adverse conditions. Jergenson said dry corn is simply harvested and spread outside, and because the roads aren’t good, the corn is bagged and strapped onto bicycles to take to market. “They don’t have a cloud in the sky

from April to October,” he said. “There are no fences to keep the cattle in, but there is someone with them all the time, usually a child.” Then, as dark begins to fall, the cattle and goats are brought home and kept in makeshift corrals to keep hyenas out until daylight arrives once again. “Some have even built two-story corrals for the goats,” Jergenson said. Another thing that struck Jergenson as unique was that none of the villages had electricity, but nearly everybody had a cell phone and the service coverage throughout Tanzania was excellent. “They’re powered by solar batteries, and when the sun constantly shines for half the year it doesn’t take long to charge a phone,” Jergenson said. “They’re pretty simple phones, not like the smartphones you and I have.” Jergenson came away not only with a new appreciation for agriculture in other parts of the world, but also for how good Americans have it compared to others. Even though he was working with some of the poorest people in the world, they would have given him everything they had with a smile. “We didn’t spend too much time with the farmers, but I’m sure that if we had we would have found some tough situations,” Jergenson said. “What struck me the most is that I have never considered myself a wealthy person, but the amount of stuff we have compared to them is almost embarrassing.”

Get to know Valerie Sauder, Pine Island, Minn.
What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in 4-H and FFA.
Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? When I joined these organizations, I never imagined all the things I would be able to do. In FFA, I am on the dairy judging team, have participated in the farm business management contest and serve as a chapter ofďƒžcer. I have also been able to go to the national FFA convention three times, two of which I was a member of the National FFA Chorus. In 4-H, I am a club and county ofďƒžcer, a Minnesota State 4-H Ambassador, serve on the State 4-H Dairy Show Committee and was able to attend the National 4-H Dairy Conference. I also participate in other projects. Being involved in these organizations ignited my passion for sharing agriculture and has given me a venue to share my knowledge. I value my involvement with both of these organizations, KRISTA KUZMA/DAIRY STAR and they have helped shape me into Valerie Sauder is a homeschooled senior from Pine Island, Minn. Her parents, Stan and Amy Sauder, farm together with family at Pine Shelter Farms where they milk 586 cows in Dodge County. the person I am today. What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? One of the most important things I have learned is that I really can make a difference. Even when the obstacles seem enormous, I will be able to achieve my goals and dreams as long as I am willing to put in the time and hard work. Just sitting back and waiting for things to happen will not get me very far. I have learned that the hard way a few times. Who do you look up to? My parents, grandparents and uncles have given me an amazing opportunity to be raised on a farm, and that has made a huge impact on me. My friends and advisors have encouraged me to go after my dreams, and my role models are my inspiration to work even harder toward my goals. Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know. I used to be really involved in theater. I acted, directed or costumed close to 15 plays or musicals in middle school. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I do odd jobs and ll in when there are gaps in the schedule in order to work around school commitments. I also do a lot of work with the show animals.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be? I wish more people could have an understanding of where their food comes from and the passion of the people behind it. I have talked to many people who really have no idea that farmers care about their animals and crops. If the public could understand how important it is to farmers to grow a healthy, safe and nutritious product, I think life would be a little easier for everyone.
Grants available for prevention of wolf attacks Applications due Nov. 24
Minnesota livestock producers can now apply for grant money to help prevent wolf attacks. The Wolf-Livestock Conict Prevention Grants were funded by the Minnesota Legislature earlier this year. There is $120,000 available to producers this scal year (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018) and another $120,000 available next scal year (July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019). Applications for this scal year are due November 24, 2017. The grants provide reimbursement for costs of approved practices to prevent wolf-livestock conicts. Eligible expenses for the grant program will include any or all of the following items: • Purchase of guard animals • Veterinary costs for guard animals • Installation of wolf-barriers which may include pens, adry and fencing • Installation of wolf-deterring lights and alarms
• Calving or lambing shelters • Other measures demonstrated to effectively reduce wolf-livestock conicts Producers must live within Minnesota’s wolf range, as designated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, or on property determined by the Commissioner of Agriculture to be affected by wolf-livestock conicts. Any animal species produced for prot and documented to have been killed by wolves in Minnesota in the past is eligible. This includes bison, cattle, chicken, deer, donkey, duck, geese, goat, horse, llama, mule, sheep, swine and turkey. The grant application must be emailed or postmarked by 5 p.m. on November 24, 2017. Work for this rst grant cycle must be done and expenses reported by June 30, 2018. Deciding how to best react to those changes to ensure the vitality of dairy farms — while being good stewards of the environment — can present a bit of a conundrum for some farmers, especially if they are pressed for time and resources. What are recommended management practices? Are there technologies that can help? Is there current research on the subject? Farmers can now see sustainability principles in action with just a few clicks of mouse, thanks to an interactive “virtual farm” website developed by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Extension, Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, and Penn State Extension. “The objective of this project is to provide a ‘onestop shop’ for all dairy sustainability information,” said Eileen Fabian, professor at Penn State’s Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. “The beauty of it is that one can take a tour of a sustainable dairy farm without stepping foot on an actual farm. The resources are accessible, free and can be viewed at anytime from anywhere.” “The design of the site ensures that farmers, the general public, and all stakeholders looking for all levels of information on dairy sustainability can navigate the site and nd information that is useful to them,” says Assistant Scientist Horacio Aguirre-
Villegas of the Biological Systems Engineering Department at UW-Madison. “The website will also host project output from the Sustainable Dairy Coordinated Agricultural Project (funded by the USDA) specically related to climate change mitigation and adaptation on dairy farms.” The catalyst for this major undertaking was a growing movement in the dairy industry to adopt practices that reduce the negative effects of agricultural operations on the environment, while at the same time securing the future sustainability of farms. The website has two virtual dairy farms: a larger 1,500-cow facility, while the other is a smallerscale operation of 150 animals. Users can click on the various aspects of the farm, such as feed production, housing, manure storage facilities, feed silos, milking facilities and more, and information related to that specic area will pop up, allowing for further exploration. The site’s resource database includes a broad range of articles, extension fact sheets, models, images and graphics from many researchers around the country. The site also contains a link to add new resources as they are developed. Researchers plan to continue to add to the site’s content as new research becomes available. Free farmland rental agreement meetings are being provided by the University of Minnesota Extension. Farm land rental rates have started to lower as corn and soybean prices continue lower in 2017. Determining a fair farm rent agreement is a challenge in today’s economy with current signiďƒžcantly lower corn and soybeans prices in 2017 compared to recent record corn and soybean prices and record farm land values. Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satisďƒžes the land owner and the farmer is a challenge. David Bau and Nathan Hulinsky, Extension Educators in Ag Business Management, will provide several ways; by examples, factsheets and worksheets to determine a fair farm land rental rate for both parties. Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farm land values and sales, a worksheet that will help determine a fair rental agreement. Input costs for 2018 will be presented along with current 2018 corn and soybean prices. Worksheets will examine 2018 costs and what is affordable rent that a farmer will be able to pay in 2018, the rate of return to the landlord at current market values and examine ďƒ&#x;exible rental agreements. “Why do I need a nutrient management plan?” Many farmers have asked this question, from a regulatory point of view the answer would be: As of January of 2008, all Wisconsin agriculture producers applying nutrients to cropland are required to implement a nutrient management plan (NMP) in accordance with ATCP 50 of the Wisconsin Administrative code. In addition, Clark County has a manure ordinance that requires permits for all newly constructed or altered manure storage facilities and requires a NMP for all livestock operations land applying manure from a permitted storage facility. My question is, why wouldn’t a farmer want a NMP? A NMP is a tool that will help you manage your crop
acres. To manage your crops you must be able to measure nutrients available in your soil, account for nutrients applied as livestock manure, and nitrogen available after your legume crops. A NMP will incorporate your soil test information, nutrients available from manure applied to your crop elds, and nitrogen credits from legumes. A NMP is a tool to measure and manage your crop acres, remember it can only be managed if it is measured. A NMP can be developed by a certied crop advisor (CCA) or by the “qualied” farmer after completing a DATCP approved training course. The benet of taking NMP training is the farmer will improve his/her crop management skills. In addition, he/she understands how to implement a NMP, even if in the future he/she would hire a CCA to develop the NMP. Currently a DATCP approved

NOTE: This is an excellent herd of young, extremely well uddered, large frame dairy cattle. The Schlangens have developed one of the top herds offered at auction this season. This herd has been on test since the 1950’s with current official DHIA records indicating a herd average of 2X 24,613 milk, 3.7% 881 fat and 3.2% 770 protein, tank average 81 pounds, several milking over 100 pounds per day. No BST. The Schlangen dairy has been among the lowest SCC herds in the state for many years with current SCC averaging an amazing 25,000. In 2016, this herd was Minnesota’s lowest SCC herd with over 4,000 herds reporting. Several cows recently fresh or due soon after sale time. Most in their first through third lactation. The Schlangens have been breeding exclusively Red & White since 1989 using leading AI sires along with herd sires from leading Midwest herds. AI sires include, but not limited to: Persia, Lawnboy P, Colt, Rager, Loyola P, and Mozygus, among others.
