Beraneks, Boesls raise children with rare metabolic disorder By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com
MILLERVILLE, Minn. – On a Sunday morning in April 2005, Curt and Julie Boesl received news they never could have anticipated – their newborn son, Logan, had tested positive for Phenylketonuria (PKU). “The phone call came after church,” Curt Boesl said, remembering that very moment. “Julie was in tears listening to the answering machine as I walked in the room.” Curt and his wife, Julie, are raising their ve children – Logan, 11, Claire, 10, Alex, 8, Lance, 7, and Lily, 5 – on a dairy farm near Millerville, Minn. Together with his father and four brothers, Curt milks 300 cows. The Boesls’ two oldest and two youngest children have classical PKU – a rare metabolic disorder that inhibits the ability to properly digest phenylalanine, the common amino acid found in protein. “Every baby is tested for it at birth,” Curt said. “Without the test and proper treatment, PKU babies can become com-
pletely nonfunctional.” However, if a strict diet is managed with a protein supplement, the effects of PKU are non-existent. The Boesls are not alone in living with PKU – although the chances of inheriting the disease are one in 15,000, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. After becoming members of the Minnesota PKU Foundation, Curt and Julie met Chris and Amanda Beranek who dairy farm near Gibbon, Minn. Only a short time before Logan’s diagnosis, the Beraneks experienced the same trauma with their eldest child, Ben. “The local nurse called and said our son had tested positive. If we didn’t feed him right, he would end up mentally handicapped,” Chris said. Immediately, the Beraneks saw a specialist at the University of Minnesota. “We were a complete mess,” Amanda said. “Here, we had this perfect, healthy baby and then we were told he was damaged.” Both couples possess a set of the mutated gene, which

Statistically, the chances of passing on the gene as a dominate trait are 25 percent; a 50 percent chance of it being passed along as a recessive trait. The Boesls have beaten the odds, and so have the Be-
raneks. Chris and Amanda have three children – Ben, 12, Katelyn, 10, and Joseph, 7. Both of their sons live with PKU. “A call came in the evening [days after Joseph was born], and I had two upset

Since birth, each child receives a daily helping of a medicated formula to provide the proper nutrients needed without consuming real protein. “They still need protein to grow, but they can’t metabolize phenylalanine. The drink is phenylalanine free,” Julie said. “In a notebook, I used to write down every ounce of formula Logan consumed.” Amanda agreed. “At rst it was how many crackers, chips, and potatoes can they have?” she said. “Now, it comes second nature to us.” There are four levels of PKU severity – all determining how much protein can be safely ingested. The Beranek boys are able to consume about 3.5 grams of protein each
Alex’s diet. “Our bodies still need the protein.” The Beraneks and Boesls order PKU-approved food through a company and have it shipped to their homes. Working closely with their schools and communities, Julie and Amanda ensure their PKU children are able to go about life the same as their siblings and peers. Each month, Julie provides the school with a bulk amount of PKU food that the cooks can make for her children. As they enter the lunch line, they receive a meal similar to that of their classmates, but one they can eat. Both mothers work with other parents in providing PKU recipes for birthday treats and school snacks. “Food is maybe a big deal to society, but not here,” Curt said. “We eat to maintain our health.” And as dairy farmers, that is a tough philosophy to follow for Curt and

Chris. “Everything I do, my kids can’t eat,” Curt said. “Milk is the perfect food; it’s what we can survive on and teaching them that is hard because they can’t have that perfect food.” But, rather than looking at the challenges with PKU, the Beraneks and Boesls have chosen to embrace their children’s difference and educate others. “Every month they have to give a speech at school, and one month’s theme was ‘What Makes You Special,’” Amanda said. “Ben came home so excited because he knew what he was going to talk about.” Chris added, “At such a young age, they can bring awareness.” In years to come, the Beraneks and Boesls will continue working closely together to support their children and welcome families who are new to the PKU community. “PKU is close to our hearts,” Julie said. Amanda agreed. “We needed to join other PKU families,” she said. “This is lifelong for us, it’s not going anywhere.”

It’s in our control and it could be so much worse.” In the evenings, both Julie and Amanda are making multiple meals to fulll the nutritional needs of their families. “I hate cooking more and more every day,” Amanda said, lightheartedly. “For spaghetti, I make three kettles of noodles, one for Katelyn and Chris, one for myself whose gluten free, and one for the boys with their low-protein noodles.” Julie agreed. “We eat regular meals because we have to,” she said of her, Curt and

Pumpkins aplenty
Wohlk adds new enterprise to family’s dairy farm By Brittany Olson

ALMENA, Wis. – While Clayton Wohlk of Almena, Wis., would tell you that he is, rst and foremost, a dairy farmer, he is testing the waters with a new crop – pumpkins. Wohlk, who milks 55 cows with his wife, Becky, his parents, Glen and Susan, and his brother, Kurt, said the idea of a pumpkin patch came to his dad on a whim. “In the fall of 2013, we were planning out the 2014 crop year, and what we would plant and grow in which elds,” said Wohlk. “We had a eld that was supposed to go into corn silage, but that fall it was really hard to get in and out of there with a chopper, especially in one particular corner. Dad said maybe we should try growing pumpkins there instead.” During the winter, Wohlk did his homework on growing pumpkins. In 2014, Wohlk sowed the seeds of his very rst crop of pumpkins. He quickly learned that the cows’ demands and the pumpkins’ needs didn’t mesh together well. and planting pumpkins, no timing works well at all,” Wohlk said. He explained the pivotal times in a pumpkin growing season clash with that of the crops grown to feed his dairy cows. After all, with the average cow in their herd milking 80 pounds a day, growing good feed is a priority for the Wohlk family. “Planting pumpkins happens right around the time we’re getting ready to plant corn and take off rst crop al-
patches. “2015 was hard because of all the rain and moisture we received. The quality wasn’t very good, and I unfortunately had to sell a lot of crummy pumpkins,” said Wohlk. This season, he said, is the best one yet. So far, 400 pumpkins have left the Wohlk farm for new homes. “I’ve probably got another 600 to sell,” Wohlk said. When most people think of

falfa,” Wohlk said. “Then, if we don’t want bugs or other stuff attacking the pumpkins, they need to be sprayed basically at the same time we’re spraying our eld crops.” The pumpkins’ turning points continue to sync up into the fall. Picking begins at the same time corn silage harvest commences and ends close to when the Wohlks nish combining the last of their corn. “This year, we actually hired out our picking and got most of it done in a day. Everyone had a good meal and had fun,” Wohlk said. While Wohlk had a decent rst year with his new project, the next season had a bumper crop of rough
pumpkins, they imagine the standard yellow-orange variety which makes a good jack-o-lantern. Wohlk wanted to offer more than just the status quo and grows a number of heirloom pumpkins. “Cinderella pumpkins look like the carriage that Cinderella rode to the ball in,” Wohlk said. “They’re atter and larger in diameter.” Cinderella pumpkins have been a hot seller for Wohlk, and so have blue and white pumpkins. “I’ve been trying to grow white pumpkins since I started, and this year they nally turned out,” said Wohlk. While the white pumpkins have sold well with Wohlk’s customers, they have one caveat. “They aren’t perfectly round like other varieties, and they sit weird on at surfaces because of the way they grow,” Wohlk said. “But a woman did stop by and she bought 30 of them for an upcoming wedding, so they must not have been all that bad.” Wohlk explained that different varieties of pumpkins have their own specic needs as well.
“It was a pretty good year for selling pumpkins, so I used some of the money I earned to buy an engagement ring.” ǧ CLAYTON WOHLK
“Standard hybrids that people would use for decoration, jack-olanterns or pies are much easier than heirlooms like Cinderellas,” Wohlk said. “Heirloom varieties are tougher to grow because they just don’t have the vigor of a hybrid, but they tend to look more interesting.” Pumpkins aren’t the only specialty crop grown by Wohlk, either. He also began growing gourds. “This year is the rst year the gourds turned out well,” Wohlk said. Interestingly enough, Wohlk wasn’t sowing the seeds of future pumpkins when he started in 2014 – he was working on growing a new-

found love with the woman who would become his wife. “I knew right away Becky was the one,” Wohlk said. “It was a pretty good year for selling pumpkins, so I used some of the money I earned to buy an engagement ring.” She said yes, and the next year’s
crop of pumpkins helped to pay for their wedding. The couple married in January of 2016, and this season’s pumpkin harvest is helping Wohlk pay the bills with low milk prices. Even though Wohlk isn’t looking to build a specialty crop outt from his relatively new side business, he

DODGEVILLE, Wis. – As an increasing amount of farmers in Southwest Wisconsin are focusing their farms on grazing, a new chance to netune their knowledge has risen. The Southwest Badger Resource Conservation & Development Council (RCDC) recently announced three farms in Dane and Iowa counties will be used for grazing demonstrations from 2017 to 2019. Bonnie Mainwaring in Avoca, Wis., Dan and Shannon Bloom and Dick and Kim Cates in Spring Green, Wis., and Koos Family Trust in Cross Plains, Wis., own the properties that will demonstrate best grazing management practices to beginning farmers starting next year. Robert Bauer, a grazing broker with RCDC, said the program is about making the best farmers even better and transferring that knowledge to young farmers entering the industry. “Our goal with the program is to develop relationships between grassland owners and producers who could rent the land,” Bauer said. “We were concerned about expiring 2013-16 acres that were coming out of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) agreements and wanted to produce an alterative to meet our needs in this region.” Bauer said he knew the program was needed after noticing the impact
sound conservation was having on the region. “There are 21 townships in this area of Southwest Wisconsin which has been termed a ‘grassland extreme conservation area.’ Landowners have been able to track and retain interesting, uncommon grassland birds as well as some threatened species,” Bauer said. The program will rent out land of the three participating farms, totaling 118 acres, who are exciting CRP. Beginning farmers will have the opportunity to rent that land at a low rate and bring in their livestock to graze the land. Landowners will install fences, lay plastic pipe to deliver water and develop other necessary infrastructure to prepare for rotational grazing on the acreage. Statistically, a growing number of acres are being rented across the country. By facilitating these relationships, they hope to develop greater rental agreements and management practices for producers of all species down the road. “In the upper Midwest, 60 percent of the land is not farmed by its owner; it’s rented out,” Bauer said. “We wanted to pair someone who is very good at natural resource conservation with a producer. The landowner may simply rent out the land, or they can be involved in the management, as well. It’s all up to their agreement.” Beginning farmers wishing to use
the land for grazing purposes are incentivized to do a good job with it, too. RCDC pays the landowner the agreed rental price for the pending three years prior to the producer moving onto the land. After the livestock is in place, the council will observe the practices the farmer is utilizing on the farm and, if appropriate, will lower the rental rate. It is a model that, according to Bauer, makes sense. “If they are doing well, we will lower the rental rate for the farmer. We already have it paid upfront and want them to do a good job,” Bauer said. The program has several goals, the rst being relationship facilitation.
The mentorship program has been greatly successful over the years. “Currently we have 21 mentors and 31 beginning farmers, and they are very diverse,” Bauer said. “We have farms of all different species; if you can build a sustainable business, we do not turn farmers away from the program.” From producers participating in the mentorship program, RCDC accepted applications for the grazing demonstration program. The response they received was positive. “People just came out of the woodwork looking for people to rent land, even some we didn’t know even owned land,” Bauer said. “After receiving ap-

“I think the really big goal of all of this is the community we are trying to develop around grazing,” Bauer said. “They’re already out there: folks are renting out properties, farmers are renting properties and they are working together. In this program, we are coming together and encouraging more of this work in Southwest Wisconsin.” This new program comes as a result of RCDC’s already established grazing mentorship program. The mentorship program is a one-year beginning farmer development program. Beginning farmers are connected with a mentor who gives advice on nancial coaching and assists with land acquisition by identifying suitable land to rent or purchase in the area.

NICC signs memorandum with USDA, National Corn Growers Association Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) has joined four Midwest community colleges in forming a national consortium to sign a memorandum of understanding with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS). In addition to NICC, participating colleges include Butler Community College, El Dorado, Kan.; Northcentral Technical College, Wausau, Wis.; Northeast Community College, Norfolk, Neb.; and Richland Community College, Decatur, Ill.. The hope is to expand the consortium in the coming years. This collaboration, which also includes the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) and USDA’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SARE), was borne out of a mutual desire to provide more ongoing education, training and demonstration to future farm producers and agricultural service providers with the goal of improving the health, and therefore the long–term productivity, resilience and sustainability of the soil. Dr. Liang Chee Wee, NICC president, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, saying, “Soil health is critical to future food production and supply world-wide. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates that global food production must increase by 60 percent by 2050 in order to meet the demand of feeding 9.7 billion people as forecasted by the United States Census Bureau. There are 7.5 billion people in 2016. Furthermore, this collaboration underscores the College’s conservation efforts with the Winneshiek Soil & Water Conservation District since 2008.” Working with local customers and stakeholders, NRCS staff across the country are providing education and training on soil health management. To build partnerships and expand the impact of this effort, NRCS sought community college partners to engage in this effort. “This partnership with the community colleges will leverage the ongoing efforts at NRCS. It will help build a network of the next generation of land managers, experts, educators and technicians who are actively involved in improving soil health,” said Dr. Bianca Moebius-Clune, NRCS’s Director of the Soil Health Division. As part of the agreement, the colleges also join a growing nationwide network (65 sites so far) working alongside the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) to test various soil health management systems designed to improve the health of soil to increase yield and protability and, over time, reduce environmental risks using these practices. Test plots are implemented on the community college campuses allowing students to learn about these practices and begin to understand their promise for higher yields and protability, their effect on resiliency against extreme weather and improved utilization and retention of nutrients on the crop. Nick Goeser, Director of NCGA’s Soil Health Partnership, said that by working directly with community colleges, they are able to reach a much wider audience of future producers than would otherwise be possible through their project. Grants through USDA-SARE can further support the partnership by providing professional development opportunities to the colleges’ agriculture educators and educational materials to supplement student learning in the classroom.

Rain, ooding challenges graziers Konicheks’ resolve displayed during pasture walk By Ron Johnson

STEUBEN, Wis. – The day was billed as a pasture walk. But, turned into a driveway talk. Soggy pastures at Doug and Susie Konicheks’ farm, Steuben, Wis., on Sept. 20 received nary a footprint from visiting graziers. At Susie’s suggestion, the walk portion of the day was cancelled. Susie warned visitors they’d lose their boots if they ventured in to the pasture. “I do, twice a day, every day,” she said. Rain – 15 inches since late August – dampened any enthusiasm for walking through the creek bottom pastures. The precipitation made its way into Pine Creek which knifes through the Konichek place and played hob with things. “I’ve got to gure out how to rebuild all this stuff: roads, [cattle] walkways,” said Doug. “That’s going to be huge. I’ve got a part of a walkway across the creek that’s totally disappeared.” The Konicheks milk 38 crossbreds on their Crawford County farm. In addition to farming, Doug works at the

They began building a rotationally grazed dairy herd in 2010 on what had been Susie’s parents’ place. Despite mass quantities of rain, this year’s grazing season year started out well. “The pasture was going ballistic,” Doug said. “The hay on top of the ridge was growing good.” But a series of oods dumped mud
on the pastures, prompting the cows to turn up their noses at the forage growing there and upsetting the grazing schedule, Konichek said. As a result, milk production has suffered. To make up for the lack of pasture, the Konicheks began feeding hay. That, said Susie, was when milk production began to drop, even though the cows are getting 12 pounds of grain each, per day. She estimated the decline was at 400 pounds every other day, falling
from 2,300 pounds to 1,900. The somatic cell count (SCC) has been up and down, but manageable. Crawford County Extension agriculture agent Vance Haugen offered a possible reason for the uctuating SCC. He noted the mud in the grass can harbor fungi. When eaten, those fungi can cause stress to the cows and raise the cell count of their milk. Asked whether it’s possible to recoup the lost milk production, Haugen said, “It’s really difcult. He said he planted the grass because the hay there was thinning. In planting the sudangrass, he made one large eld into strips of hay alternating with grass. He has taken one cutting of sudangrass and wrapped the bales in plastic. “The rst cutting was supposed to be at 40 days or 40 inches,” Doug said. “Well, at about 32 days it was 44 inches.” Now, the grass is growing back, but is spotty, Doug said. He estimated its height at 16 to 18 inches and has questioned when he should cut the sudangrass again. “The height doesn’t matter,” said veteran grazer, Don Boland, Mt. Sterling, Wis. “When it’s ready, it’s ready.” Boland, who has grown sudangrass, added that waiting for the grass to grow taller can equate to a loss of palatability and nutrition. Haugen said it’s important to beware of prussic acid poisoning when feeding sudangrass that was cut when it was shorter than 18 inches, or if it has undergone a frost. If there is a worry about prussic acid, Haugen said the toxin can be diluted by feeding the sudangrass with something else. He suggested blending hay into the ration by grazing the sudangrass regrowth for 12 hours and then taking the cattle out of the grass for 12 hours. And, feed hay during the interval. Then, put the cattle back on the sudangrass for 12 additional hours. Another suggestion was to fence off a strip of the hay eld and a strip of sudangrass, let the cows on both at the same time and allow them to choose what they want to eat. “My guess,” Haugen said, “is that the sudangrass will not be their favorite at this time of year.” The Konicheks went on to talk about how Pine Creek keeps gnawing away at its bank. “We’re losing a lot of real estate,” Susie said. One suggestion was to have riprap placed where the creek rounds a corner and has been washing the soil away. Haugen urged the farmers to take care
of problems farther up the hill and on top, so they would not be merely treating the symptom. Doug said the three water diversions – resembling speed bumps – built into the road extending from the valley to the top of the ridge need some work. Maybe, it was suggested, the rugged road needs more such diversions, to slow owing water even more. “One principal to remember,” Haugen said, “is that while the overall slope is important, the most important thing is the distance the water travels. that’s only 200 or 300 feet.” Grazing specialist Dennis Rooney, Steuben, Wis., mentioned seeing makeshift water diversions built by partially burying old conveyor belts and supporting them with 2- by 12-inch boards. Haugen suggested building one or two such diversions in order to see how well they function. Despite above-normal rainfall – including 10 inches in one week – Doug said the aftermath of the ooding has not been as bad as in years past. He attributed that to prior oods which cleaned much of the debris away, leaving little to be brought downstream. Doug said he learned that, yes, wrapped bales do oat. Using a tractor with a bale spear, he rescued six which were headed down the valley. Reecting on the excess rain, Doug said, “This, to me, has been a bizarre year. I expect maybe one ood per year. I don’t expect four oods, four weeks in a row.” Still, he expressed optimism. “It’s got to dry out sometime,” he said.

Amazingly, the team was 1st by a 16-point margin in oral reasons, with the team averaging a full point higher per oral presentation than the 2nd oral reasons team, which was Penn State. University of Minnesota contestants were 1st, 3rd, and 4th individually in oral reasons. The team members were Ethan Dado, Amery, WI (2nd individual overall, 4th reasons, 3rd Holstein, 5th Jersey, 6th Guernsey); Crystal Siemers-Peterman, Cleveland, WI (6th overall, 1st reasons, 1st Brown Swiss, 6th Ayrshire); Laura Jensen, Comstock, WI (11th overall, 3rd reasons, 2nd Ayrshire, 10th Brown Swiss); and Gabriella Sorg, Hastings, MN (16th overall, 1st Guernsey). The team also placed 2nd in the Brown Swiss breed, 3rd in Ayrshire, 4th in Jersey, and 5th in Holstein. SDSU Dairy Cattle Judging Team places high at Accelerated Genetics Intercollegiate Contest The South Dakota State University Dairy Cattle Judging Team achieved a strong nish in the 23rd Annual Accelerated Genetics Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in Viroqua, Wis., Sept. 19. The team placed third overall, was named the second place Guernsey Team, third place Holstein Team, and fourth place Jersey Team. Kirby Krogstad, Dairy Production major from Eyota, Minn., nished as the rst-place individual in the Holstein Breed and seventh high individual overall. Cole Hoyer, Dairy Production and Dairy Manufacturing double major from West Salem, Wisc.nished as fourth high individual overall. Other members of the team include Andrew Socha, Precision Agriculture major from Rogers, Minn., and Kristin Erf, Dairy Manufacturing major from Oakdale, Minn. The team is coached by Jill Anderson, Assistant Professor in the SDSU Dairy and Food Science Department. “Our students competed among the best and have truly shown their knowledge of dairy cattle, ability to distinguish characteristics, and importantly, their ability to communicate their reasons in an effective manner,” says Vikram Mistry, SDSU Dairy and Food Science Department Head. “I am very proud of our students for their performance and conduct. I also compliment Dr. Jill Anderson, coach of the team. The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Dairy Judging Team took third place overall at the 2016 All-American Invitational Dairy Cattle Judging Contest Sept. 19 in Harrisburg, Pa. A total of 13 universities competed in the collegiate division where team members judged 10 classes of cattle and gave oral reasons on ve of the classes. The top ve individuals and teams were recognized. The UW-River Falls team placed just behind the teams from the University of Kentucky and the University of Minnesota, who nished rst and second, respectively. The UW-River Falls team took rst place in the collegiate division for Holsteins. Representing UWRF was Tim Abrahamson of Lindstrom, Minn., Valerie Kramer of St. Cloud, Minn., Trent Miller of Spring Valley, Wis. and Charlie Moore of Fennimore, Wis. Abrahamson was the 4th high individual overall and Miller was the 5th high individual, out of the 52 individual competitors. Abrahamson, Kramer and Moore are all agricultural business majors and Miller is a dairy science major. Steve Kelm, professor of dairy science and co-chair of the Animal and Food Science Department, coached the team. Wisconsin was well represented in other divisions at the 2016 competition. The Wisconsin FFA team took rst place in the FFA Division. The team was coached by Gwen (Betzold) Dado of Amery, a 1986 graduate of the agricultural education program. Contestants judged 10 classes of cattle and then gave oral reasons on four or ve of the classes depending on their division. The week caps off with the 60th Pennsylvania Dairy Princess Pageant on Saturday, October 1, at the Radisson Hotel in Camp Hill, Cumberland County, Pa. Equipment safety is vital in preventing farm accidents By Emily Wilmes, University of Minnesota Extension Tractors and large eld equipment are the most common causes of farm accidents, injuries, and deaths. They are a necessary part of farm work, but exercising caution when using them is crucial in preventing accidents. I am passionate about all areas of farm safety, but especially equipment safety. It’s very personal for me, as my dad lost his leg in a farming accident involving equipment when he was only 18. I don’t want any farmer to go through what my dad went through, so pay attention to safety. First and foremost—read the safety manual. Also, pay attention to any safety or warning decals on the equipment. Before operation, be sure to inspect the equipment for any safety hazards. During inspection, also identify all safety hazards including: moving parts, pinch points, crush points, pull-in areas, and free-wheeling areas. Be sure anyone who is going to be using the equipment is aware of these areas as well. While using the equipment, keep bystanders—especially children—away from the equipment operation area. Before approaching equipment for an inspection or repair, shut it down, turn off the engine, remove the key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. This is only time you should be removing any safety devices, such as shields from the equipment. When any work you were doing is completed, safety devices should be put back on before equipment operation resumes. In addition, be mindful when using public roadways. Use lights and ashers to ensure you are easy for drivers to see and have a slow-moving emblem on your tractor and equipment. It is Minnesota law for all vehicles travelling under 30 miles per hour on public roadways. You may also consider using a following vehicle when moving large pieces of equipment, especially at night. Proper safety precautions on the roads keep not only you, but the other people using the road, safe. We cannot control how other drivers may react to farm equipment being on the road, but it is vital that farmers are doing whatever they can to keep everyone safe. Farm equipment is a dangerous part of farming, but following safety guidelines, keeping others away from the operation area, and using public roads in a safe manner will keep us all out of harm’s way.
