Getting their neighbor back on his feet Farmers rally behind Tommerdahl after farm accident By Brittany Olson

HUDSON, Wis. – On Sept. 28, Charlie Tommerdahl was basking in the bliss of being a newlywed while running the barn cleaner on his 120-cow dairy farm near Hudson, Wis., a week after marrying his wife, Sarah. However, when the chain got caught on something, he had to ďƒžnd a way to release the pressure. “We were going on our honeymoon that weekend, and I hadn’t taken more than three days off in ďƒžve years,â€? Charlie said. Suddenly, as if a ďƒžnger snapped, the chain slipped and what followed next was the worst pain in Charlie’s life, eventually requiring three surgeries and a farmer who had always been on the move with Sarah and their two daughters, Claire and Nora, to stay off his feet for the next

However, just as quickly as the barn cleaner chain broke Charlie’s foot, his friends and neighbors jumped into action. “I had the barn cleaner shut off, but the power unit was still running, and in a split second it got me. I looked down at my leg and saw the blood spilling out of my boot and pant leg, and I knew this
wasn’t going to be good,â€? Charlie said. “I called Sarah ďƒžrst, and then about 10 minutes later I called my friend and neighbor, Josh Sazama, and told him I was on my way to the emergency room and needed someone to feed cows that night.â€? Sazama not only fed Charlie’s cows, but ďƒžxed the barn cleaner chain that landed his
friend in the hospital. Charlie faced a long and difďƒžcult road ahead, with two operations in the ďƒžrst six days after the accident. “The ďƒžrst two surgeries were just to clean out the wounds. Because he was standing in manure when it happened, there was a high risk of infection and if it got into the bone, there’s noth-

The main bone in his foot was ipped upside down.” The third operation, expected to take place in late October, will essentially rebuild Charlie’s foot. “They’re going to use bone grafts to rebuild what was lost, but we need to wait for the wounds to heal and for the swelling to go down,” Sarah said. The toughest pill to swallow for Charlie is not just having to sit still for a quarter of a year, and the busiest one at that, but being all alone on the farm. “The biggest thing that sucks about this is that I’m a rst-generation farmer and I have no close relatives that know how to farm,” Charlie said. “If I didn’t have feed already made, and had this happened in April and not September, the cows would have been gone the following Monday, no question.” However, to the Tommerdahls’ gratitude, Sazama has continued to mix feed and carry out chores around the Tommerdahl farm in Charlie’s absence, on top of having a full-time job in another town. “I am humbled at how everyone is rallying behind us,” Sarah said. “We’ve been worried because Charlie isn’t laid up for a day or a week, but three whole months.” Fellow dairy farmers Jason Kjos, who is Sazama’s brother-in-law and milks 140 cows just a couple of miles away, Paul and Kevin Lubich, who milk 60 cows down the road from Kjos, and Brad Peterson, who milks approximately 300 cows a few miles south of nearby River Falls, Wis., have all chipped in to help the Tommerdahls on top of getting their chores done at
home. Duane Lenander, Ben Fochs and Reed Sponsler have also pitched in to help. “Charlie’s got a tough road ahead of him,” Paul said. “I’m so amazed at how two of our employees, Kylie Jo Hewitt and Rachel Nestrud, stepped up to help one of our neighbors in need. Both of these girls were so happy to help out Charlie.” The Lubichs have been coming every day to make sure the milkhouse is running properly and make repairs, as well as chopping bedding and cleaning the barns. Meanwhile, the Petersons, who are also custom choppers, chopped all of the Tommerdahls’ silage corn in what was already a hectic timeframe. The magnitude of their neighbors’ generosity has not been lost on Charlie and Sarah. Sarah’s eyes welled up with tears as she recounted everything that has been done for them in the past several weeks. “It’s been a big sacrice not only for these farmers, but also their wives and families at home who already see them so little this time of year,” Sarah said. “We would have lost the farm if they weren’t here helping, because if they weren’t here out of the kindness of their hearts, the cows would have been gone.” Even though their neighbors have told them time and again that this is just what neighbors do for each other, Charlie and Sarah Tommerdahl are still feeling obligated to someday return the favor should they ever need it. “We will spend the rest of our lives trying to repay these incredible people,” Sarah said.

Giese lands his rst bear

ALMA CENTER, Wis. – The third time was the charm for Grant Giese of Alma Center, Wis. The young Jackson County bear hunter achieved a successful bear hunt with his third bear tag when he bagged a nearly 400-pound boar near his home Oct. 8. Giese, a 2017 dairy herd management graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course (FISC) program, farms with his family on their dairy, Table Rock Holsteins, where they milk 66 Holsteins. In addition to working on the farm, Giese has been an A.I. reproduction specialist with NorthStar Cooperative since September. The bear season in Jackson County began Sept. 6 and came to an end Oct. 10. Giese, running out of time for his third tag, bagged his bear just two days before the end of the season. “It had rained for two days, and then got warm,” Giese said of that afternoon. “I thought to myself, ‘Yep, today’s the day.’” Giese headed into the woods, which he’d done every day for at least 25 days, weather permitting. “They get active fairly soon after it stops raining, especially if it gets hot,” Giese said. “You need to be in the tree before they get active.” Giese has hunted bear with both gun and bow. That day, he chose a Howa 1500 .308 gun, which had been a gift from his father, for his hunt. “It was my third tag,” Giese said. “I knew I had to make something happen and make it count.” That happened when a bear wandered within range of his tree-stand. At 6:28 p.m., Giese red the shot that landed him his bear. “He took off. I was pretty sure it was a killing

He waited 20 minutes before climbing out of his tree stand. “The bear ran off the way I usually come in, so I went out a different way,” Giese said. “I went home

THORP, Wis. – Fall brings a certain excitement in the air, and many families enjoy connecting with farms by taking in a corn maze. The Thorp FFA chapter has partnered up with Dutch Dairy to offer a corn maze to the public, teach people about agriculture and raise money. Brooke Webb, a sophomore at Thorp High School, serves as the chapter historian and also heads up the committee that works to put the maze together. “We open the corn maze in early September and run it through October,” Webb said. “One night in October, we run a haunted maze for Halloween. There are about 15 members who work on the corn maze during the time it’s open.” The haunted maze night took place on Oct. 22 and the maze went from friendly to ghoulish, with a variety of scary statues and efgies scattered throughout the maze. The Thorp FFA chapter uses the money they raise from the corn maze
to help fund their chapter programs and projects. “We do several different trips,” Webb said. “We have kids who attend our state convention held each June in Madison, and we send a delegation to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.” In addition to the state and national conventions, FFA members can take part in the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) and travel to Washington, D.C. to learn more about how the federal government works and affects their daily lives. Members of the Thorp FFA also participate in a variety of Career Development Events (CDE) areas. The Thorp FFA Chapter promotes agriculture in a variety of activities in addition to the corn maze. The chapter celebrates National Farms Day by making and distributing gift bags to area farmers. During National FFA week, the chapter members promote agriculture and increases awareness of their program at the high school by holding activities throughout the week for students to participate. Thorp FFA works with the school district to have Farm to School meals, serving a variety of different meals. The chapter works to nd local vendors to buy the supplies for the meals. The meals are served to the whole school district every Friday.

Doris Budde, 57, passes Doris M. Budde, age 57 of Albany, passed away peacefully at her home in Albany with her beloved family at her side on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. She fought cancer the way she lived her life, with strength, grace, a strong faith and complete trust in God’s plan. Doris was born August 6, 1960, to Joseph and Isabelle (Mueller) Zimmer in St. Cloud, MN. After graduating from Apollo High School, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from College of St. Benedict. She then worked at Edina Realty and Metropolitan Federal in the Twin Cities from 1983 until 1994. Doris was united in marriage to Ronald Budde on July 9, 1994 at St. Joseph’s Church in St. Joseph, MN. They made their home on their dairy farm west of Albany where she found her greatest joy in being a wife and mother to their three wonderful children, Nick, Chris and Katie – always loving, guiding, teaching and supporting them. She had many interests and enjoyed vegetable and ower gardening, reading, cooking, baking, scrapbooking and crafting. She spent many hours volunteering for her children’s religious education, school and sports activities and above all, she treasured spending time with family and friends. Doris is survived by her loving husband, Ron, and children, Nick, Chris and Katie of Albany; father, Joseph Zimmer of Cold Spring; siblings, Marilyn (Jeff) Cupka of Brooklyn Park, Kathy (LeRoy) Beuning of Avon, David (Kathy) Zimmer of Royalton, Chuck (Karen) Zimmer of Litcheld and Deb (Randy) Lange of St. Cloud; and all of her nieces and nephews. Bonnie Mohr commissioned by American Jersey Cattle Association Bonnie Mohr, one of the world’s most popular and most respected dairy artists, has been commissioned by the American Jersey Cattle Association to portray the Jersey cow for the 21st Century. This will be the fth time that Bonnie Mohr has been selected by a U.S. dairy breed association to create works that advance breed improvement as well as support educational and promotional efforts. The new works will join four previous oil paintings that have laid down a heritage for the Jersey cow in the United States: the two created by Edwin Megargee in 1925 and 1954, the Howard Coleman painting of 1972, and Mohr’s own 1991 painting completed just three years into her professional career. The works will be unveiled at the 150th Annual Meeting of the American Jersey Cattle Association, being held concurrently with the 21st International Conference of the World Jersey Cattle Bureau in June 2018.

ConƟnued from GIESE | Page 4 and painstaking one. “You have to accumulate preference points to draw a tag,” Giese said. “You earn points by applying for tags, which you have to do in December. Tags are given out on a lottery-drawing system.” The tag Giese drew for the 2017 season marked the third time he got the opportunity to hunt for a bear. His rst tag came in 2009. Once a tag is procured, the work of bear-hunting begins. In central Wisconsin, bear are hunted over bait, and hunters begin to bait bears starting midsummer “Usually I’m putting out bait in July,” Giese said. “This year I was late, and didn’t start until mid-August. … I’ve also found that sometimes by the tail-end of the season, the bears have quit hitting on the bait sites. I feel they stayed more active this year, by my starting later.” Giese baits bear each year, regardless of his luck in the tag-drawing. “I like to keep the bear coming to my land, and I usually know someone that does get a tag,” said Giese, who rst got into the sport at age 12, when he started helping a neighbor bait bears for hunting. For his bait sites, Giese tries to choose low and swampy-type ground, with tree cover and cornelds nearby. Each summer, he begins with several sites, and pares it down to the most active ones. Giese has trail cameras on each of his bait sites to be able to monitor the bears that come to eat. According to Giese, bait has to be put out every single day to keep the bears coming in consistently. “Usually I put bait out between 11 in the morning and 10 at night,” Giese said. “It depends a lot on the weather,
is illegal.” Giese said in the Jackson County area there have only been rare occurrences of bears that have attacked calves and other small farm animals. One thing any bear hunter hates to see show up on his cameras is a sow with cubs. “You aren’t allowed to shoot sows with cubs, or cubs themselves,” Giese said. “There are usually not any big bears around if there is a sow with cubs around.” If Giese sees a sow and her cubs show up on his camera, he will wait a few days and see if they are the only visitors to that bait site, or if they were passing through. If the sow and her cubs are routine visitors, Giese will move on and nd a new site. This fall, Giese has been watching about six bears at two sites. He estimates the largest bear to be well over 500 pounds, while the smallest is somewhere around 225 pounds. “If you put photos of the bear I shot, side by side with ones of the biggest bear that was hitting on my bait sites, the big one makes mine look like a baby,” Giese said. Despite that, Giese is happy with the bear he was able to harvest and is having a full body mount done. While he has checked the rst bear off his bucket list, Giese plans to continue applying for tags and taking part in the annual ritual of baiting and hunting bear. “It’s a thrill when they come in,” Giese said. “It’s interesting to watch these ginormous creatures. They are out there in the world, but you hardly see them, and then they just walk in, like it’s nothing.”

Once he has a bear on camera, he stops using the scent. If the bears seem to stop hitting the baits, Giese will change what he is using. In Jackson County, the typical bear’s diet might consist of corn, grass-
es, sticks and pinecones. Apparently, though, bears have a sweet tooth and come back for bait treats like powdered sugar, granola, nuts, jams, maple syrup, Circus Peanuts, yogurt or chocolate covered pretzels. “Ironically, one thing they really seem to love is gummy bears,” Giese said. “The biggest thing you can’t use to bait bear around here is meat, which

Industrywide food safety initiative focuses on artisan, farmstead cheesemakers Free training course, interactive website part of new resources Food safety is a longstanding priority for the dairy industry and farmers. Industry leaders understand the importance of keeping consumers safe and know that one negative incident could affect consumer condence, which could impact sales. For this reason, food safety is a key priority for the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, founded in 2008 by dairy farmers through their checkoff. The organization allows the dairy community to collaborate proactively on issues that are important to the industry and its customers, including health and nutrition and the environment. The Innovation Center’s latest resource, an online course offered in partnership with North Carolina State University, is geared toward artisan and farmstead
cheesemakers, who represent a growing segment of cheese production. More than a thousand U.S. processors are helping meet consumer demand for these cheeses. To reach and support this cheese-making community more effectively, the Innovation Center has partnered with the American Cheese Society, along with academics, retailers and small dairy manufacturers to establish the Artisan Food Safety Advisory Team. This online introductory course, “Food Safety for Artisan/Farmstead Cheesemakers,” will be offered free through the end of the year. University of Minnesota places rst in oral reasons in National Dairy Cattle Judging contest The University of Minnesota’s dairy cattle judging team placed 1st overall in oral reasons in the national collegiate contest on October 2 at World Dairy Expo, Madison, Wis. This is the second time in three years the University of Minnesota has placed rst in the public speaking portion of the national contest. The Minnesota team also was 2nd in Brown Swiss, 2nd in Milking Shorthorn, 4th in Guernsey, 5th in Holstein, 5th in Jersey, and 6th overall. Brooke Roberts, Whitelaw, Wis., placed 1st individually in oral reasons, and Roberts is the fourth University of Minnesota contestant during the past seven years who has place 1st individually in oral reasons in the national collegiate contest. Other team members were Laura Jensen, Comstock, Wis.; Austin Schmitt, Rice, Minn.; and Trent Dado, Amery, Wis. Individually, Roberts also was 3rd in Brown Swiss and 12th overall. Jensen was 4th in oral reasons, 3rd in Milking Shorthorn, and 14th overall, and Schmitt was 19th overall. New state budget cuts farmer costs for pesticides, fertilizers Wisconsin farmers will pay less for pesticides and fertilizers under the budget signed by Gov. Scott Walker Thursday. As part of a package of fee changes in the state’s pesticide regulatory programs, the fee of 0.8 percent of pesticide sales charged by many agribusinesses will no longer be permitted effective Oct. 1. In addition, the 97-cent-per-ton fee on fertilizer sales will drop to 62 cents next July. “This may be listed on invoices as a pesticide surcharge fee or pesticide fee or other similar language, and totals 0.8 percent of the total price of pesticide products,” said Lori Bowman, director of the Bureau of Agrichemical Management in the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. “If farmers see this charge on their invoices after Oct. 1, we ask them to let us know so we can take action.” The reductions are part of an overall effort to balance revenues and expenditures within the bureau. Beginning in the early 1990s, surcharges were tacked onto registration fees for pesticide products distributed in Wisconsin, license fees for pesticide and fertilizer businesses, and fertilizer sales. The surcharges were intended to fund the Agricultural Chemical Cleanup Program (ACCP) fund, which partially reimburses cleanup of fertilizer and pesticide spills and contamination. Many older sites contaminated with agrichemicals over years of use have now been cleaned up, and the ACCP fund has accumulated as a result. Since there is no longer a need to fund the ACCP program at the same level, the Governor proposed changes to reduce it, which the Legislature approved. Local agribusinesses will also benet, because there will be a fee holiday on the surcharges they’ve been paying into the ACCP fund as part of their fertilizer and pesticide licenses. The holiday will remain in place until the fund balance drops below $1.5 million. The budget also increases the total both agribusinesses and farmers can be reimbursed for agrichemical cleanups to $650,000 over a lifetime, from the current $400,000, and makes all facilities eligible for reimbursement. Previously, facilities built after July 2013 could not be reimbursed for agrichemical cleanups, though they also paid the surcharge. The 0.8 percent that farmers have been paying on pesticide products was never required by law. However, but pesticides dealers were permitted to pass on to farmers fees they were required to pay to manufacturers. What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? Willing Workers 4-H Club and Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I’m involved in these activities as a way to experience agriculture with kids my age. My school doesn’t offer agriculture opportunities, so 4-H and Jr. Holsteins is my outlet for agriculture. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. I can’t pinpoint an exact memory, but I have met amazing friends through both organizations. I would never have been able to meet many of them without the help of 4-H or Jr. Holsteins. What’s your favorite social media? Facebook, because I love seeing pictures of people and updates on other people’s lives. It’s a great way to stay in touch with people from across the country. What are your career aspirations? As much as I love the dairy industry, my plans after high school are to pursue a career in mortuary science. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? I have learned valuable skills such as networking, public speaking and sportsmanship. Who do you look up to? My mom. She has made sacrices to give me the opportunity to show and participate in sports. I would not be at this point in my life without her. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I throw shot put in track. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I feed and milk cows, help with calves, assist with hoof trimming and care for cats. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? There is so much negativity in the world. I would like to be able to change that. I would change it by being as positive as I can because I believe in the ripple effect.

My class went on a camping trip to Sidie Hollow where they have a re-enactment of how they lived. We made tents out of tarps and spent the night there. Schools should do more things like that to make learning fun. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a dairy farmer and an auctioneer. I want to farm with my friends, Blaine and Patrick. Blaine has a parlor, and we both have cows. Patrick has the machinery. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have a double-6 parlor. I like that because you can milk 12 cows at a time. I would milk 100 cows and have one or two tractors. I would have a calf barn by the parlor because I would feed whole milk. I would have another farm for heifers. What is your favorite dairy treat? Oreo ice cream. What is your favorite game to play at home/on the farm? I like playing with my farm toys and riding my pony, Joe. Are you involved in any activities? What’s your favorite? What do you enjoy about it? I might wrestle this year. Otherwise I like talking with my friends and walking around at recess.
Garrison Klinkner, 9 Fourth grade When do you do chores? I help with chores after school, on the weekends and when we are off from school. What is your favorite chore and least favorite chore? I like bagging silage. I could do that every day. I do not like climbing up the silo, especially in the winter. What is your favorite animal on your farm? Tell us about it. My favorite animal is our best cow, Sunny. She was grand champion at our district show. What is your favorite subject in school? I like gym class because you get to do lots of fun stuff and run around. What is something you’ve learned in school recently? We are learning about Wisconsin, and the history of Wisconsin and agriculture in school. I like that because it is fun to learn, and we get to go to Madison in the spring. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a professional football player, probably a quarterback for the Packers. I am pretty good at that. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have three robots and milk 1,000 cows. I think that would be a better facility than a tiestall barn. What is your favorite dairy treat? Cottage cheese with salt and pepper. What is your favorite game to play at home/on the farm? I like building a farm with my farm toys. What do you like to do during recess? I like to play football and be with my friends. Rubi Klinkner, 5 Kindergarten When do you do chores? I help sometimes after school and on the weekends. What is your favorite chore and least favorite chore? I like helping my dad feed cows. I like running the levers on the tractor. I do not like watering the calves. It is kind of boring, and you have to dump out the buckets and then spend a half hour lling them. What is your favorite animal on your farm? Tell us about it. I like my cow, Moola, and her daughters, Magic Moola and Mega Millions. I think they have cool names, especially Magic Moola. What is your favorite subject in school? I like going to art because you get free time and can draw, and I like drawing and making stuff. What is something you have learned in school recently? We learned about apples, and we went to an apple orchard in Cashton and got to pick apples. I picked a Honeycrisp and it was yummy. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a cheerleader. I want to cheer for the Packers. They are my favorite team, and I am their best fan. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have a couple of trees around and a silage bag. I would have a parlor and 100 cows and some calves, but just heifers. I would have some kitties, too. What is your favorite dairy treat? I like cottage cheese with salt on it, but no pepper. What is your favorite game to play at home/on the farm? I like to play with my sister and play hide-and-go-seek and tag and other stuff. What do you like to do during recess? I like sliding down the slides and playing with my friends. I like the monkey bars, too, but I get boo-boos on my hands when I swing on them.

If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. It would look like this one. What is your favorite dairy treat? Chocolate milk. What is your favorite game to play at home/on the farm? I like playing with the toy tractors but they break sometimes. What do you like to do while your older siblings are in school? I like to watch Bubble Guppies, and play with the calves and kitties.

Free farmland rental agreement meetings are being provided by the University of Minnesota Extension. Farm land rental rates have started to lower as corn and soybean prices continue lower in 2017. Determining a fair farm rent agreement is a challenge in today’s economy with current signicantly lower corn and soybeans prices in 2017 compared to recent record corn and soybean prices and record farm land values. Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satises the land owner and the farmer is a challenge. David Bau and Nathan Hulinsky, Extension Educators in Ag Business Management, will provide several ways; by examples, factsheets and worksheets to determine a fair farm land rental rate for both parties. Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farm land values and sales, a worksheet that will help determine a fair rental agreement. Input costs for 2018 will be presented along with current 2018 corn and soybean prices. Worksheets will examine 2018 costs and what is affordable rent that a farmer will be able to pay in 2018, the rate of return to the landlord at current market values and examine exible rental agreements.
