One, apparently, had a very hard time believing Steve when he explained “how much he enjoys milking with me every morning.” If only I felt the same every morning. Apparently, Steve’s friend went home and asked his wife to milk with him one particular morning. Things didn’t go well. The friend explained to Steve, “I guess I pushed all the wrong buttons,” he said. Most of the time Steve and I get along quite well – as long as he lets me have a bit of space and time each morning. When Steve forgets about the time and attitude ultimatum, we have problems. Just the other morning Steve stepped over the line

He didn’t press the completely wrong button, but was working his way toward the red emergency switch. You know how songs get stuck in your head? Well, that was the game Steve, or otherwise known as Tim McGraw-Wanna-Be, started playing in the milking parlor Tuesday morning. Three days a week, we set up footbaths for our cows to keep their feet healthy. It keeps the cows comfortable and able to walk around, which helps encourage them to walk up to the feed bunk and chow down. Chowing down leads to more milk production. The copper sulfate we use turns the water an appealing shade of sky blue. The water reminds me of a water hazard on a golf course. All of a sudden, from the far-end of the milking parlor, I hear, “From the land of sky-blue waters…” A few minutes later, I was emphatically thanking Steve for putting that useless song, and image of a cartoon bear, in my head. “Should I sing something else?” Steve asked.

I must admit, he does do a rather romantic version of the Johnny Cash hit “Ring of Fire.” I tried to explain that in order to expel the songs from my head, we need to make up our own words. I explained, “Remember the other day I started singing to the No Beer Today tune, ‘No calf today; no calf today. You can have a calf on Monday.’” I have to go. Holding on to Fall What can you say except … Ahhh! When the fall weather is like this, you just have to pause, exhale and enjoy the moments. I want to wrap my arms around this weather and hold on for dear life. I want to savor every warm, sunny-lled minute because I know once it is gone, it will be a long time in winter wear. Right now, sweatshirts are just warm enough. The wild temperature swings earlier this month felt like the weather was going through its own type of menopausal hot ashes. We didn’t know if we should grab insulated coveralls or if just a t-shirt would be enough. Right now, I think the temperature has stabilized to a point of perfection for the season. Now if we can just hang on to this weather moment. Trying to hold on to the weather is like trying to hold on to a bouquet of balloons on a breezy day. Your knuckles turn white because you are holding on so
tight. You don’t want the strings to slip through your ngers. You want to enjoy the sight of colorful balloons dancing in the sky anchored to your hand. The feeling of joy this moment brings to you lightens your heart. But eventually, the balloons will break free and oat away. This beautiful fall weather will also eventually break and disappear. I guess we better enjoy every minute we have before fall slips through our ngers and winter arrives. The gorgeous dry days we’ve been experiencing lately have helped to push harvest along. We are in the nal stages. The combine arrived this morning to start taking out the high moisture corn. It is coming out in a range between not too wet and not too dry. It’s just about right, except I would call it more like mid-moisture corn. The warm temperatures, low humidity and an early killing frost have pulled the extra moisture
out of everything. The yields have been mixed. Some elds aren’t quite what we were expecting but at least there will be enough feed for the cows and extra to Just Thinking Out Loud store and sell later. The warm fall weather reprieve has given me a chance to wash windows without having to wear neoprene gloves to protect my ngers from frostbite. For many years, I have washed windows when it was a wee bit too cold without special By Natalie Schmitt gloves. I’ll be done with the barn windows soon Columnist and can then turn my attention to the house windows. There are still too many bugs crawling around on the southwardly facing house windows. The warm sun rays reecting off the windows are a magnet, drawing all kinds of bugs looking for a place to warm up and escape the inevitable cold. I’m going to have to wait until a frost takes them out for good before I can wipe away their trails across the glass. Most of the leaves on the oak trees are scattered around the yard and some are piled into corners where the swirling north winds dropped them. I’m waiting for the big elm tree next to the machine shed to n-

If I’m lucky, a good strong wind can blow most of the leaves out of the yard and across the open elds. Unfortunately, the corn eld north of the house was combined, so I may end up with more dried corn stalk debris in the yard than leaves when the wind stops blowing. My friend, Ann, says she doesn’t rake the leaves in her yard. The sound of dry leaves crunching under her feet is a sound of the season she treasures. The sight of kids playing in leaf piles around the yard help keep her young at heart. I agree. There are so many sights and sounds of this season I enjoy and treasure. Wiping off your chin after biting into a crisp, juicy apple. Snuggling under blankets on a moonlit hayride. Roasting weenies until they are well done over a crackling re. Switching cows under a crisp starlit night sky looking for the Big Dipper. Warming my hands up over a steaming bowl of bouja. (For those outside of central Minnesota, bouja is a combination of every type of meat and veggie cooked outside in a huge kettle until you can’t recognize anything.) These are a few of my favorite fall things. We have had a great second half of fall weather, but the temperatures aren’t the only special thing about this season. The sky has been full of wonder and delight. The blood moon lunar eclipse earlier this month was a great morning treat as I headed out for chores. The solar eclipse at sunset this week will be a unique opportunity to play in the sun looking for crescent shaped shadows. I wish I still had little kids around to share these moments of wonder with. Of course, nothing can match the beauty every night at sunset when the sky becomes an artist’s pallet of reds, oranges, blues, purples and every other color in between hovering between the horizon as daylight yields to the night time sky. As my grip on this fall weather starts to slip and give way to the next season, I’m going to squeeze every extra moment out of these special days and nights as I hold onto fall. Natalie, Mark and his brother, Al, Schmitt farm together near Rice, Minn. They milk 100 registered Holsteins under the RALMA prex. Their four children are great help around the farm and are pushing Natalie out of several jobs. Therefore she is thankful to have something else to do. Tell us about your farm: We milk 90 Holstein cows. We farm 750 acres. Our crops consist of alfalfa, corn, soybeans and oats. What’s the busiest time of day for you? My busiest time of day is during the morning and evenings doing chores in the barn. When Norbert is busy with eld work, I do the majority of milking and feeding the cows and calves. How much time do you spend doing farmwork compared to housework? Every day is different. Most days, I do about eight hours of chores. In between chores, I try to do some housework along with yardwork. During the busy months of eldwork, I usually am the parts runner, pick-up person when someone needs a ride or bringing lunch to the eld so the guys can keep running.

What do you do in your free-time and why? In my free time, I enjoy riding motorcycle along with Norbert. We try to go whenever we get a break in eldwork. We have been fortunate enough to get away for a week-long trip in March for the last ve years to either Texas or Arizona. What’s the best thing about farming? The best thing about farming is being your own boss. Also making improvements on the farm over the years to make the farm a more efcient operation. When you look back on your life, what do you want to be remembered for? I would like to be remembered for my work ethic. Work hard, don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty and pitching in when my husband needed my help. Do you have any ideas that could make farming easier for you and all farming women? Less stress is the rst thing on my list. Second would be having another female to work beside and help me with all my to-do lists. Tell us your most memorable experience while dairy farming. It would have to be the time about ve years ago when we went on our trip to Texas in March. Our son was milking cows and our three-year-old grandson, Ryland, was helping push manure in the gutter with his little snow shovel. He was trying to push a big pile into the gutter when he and the shovel did a gutter dive. Doug didn’t have time to send a picture because he was busy hosing him down after the incident. Thank goodness he didn’t get hurt or kicked. Doug said the cows turned and looked at the commotion and the dogs barked. Ryland said he doesn’t remember that, but we all do and still laugh about it. My husband and I wish we were there to see that one.

We have 1,250 cows plus young stock, and we farm approximately 1,200 acres. We chose to plant Pioneer® brand hybrids for corn silage because they have perfomed extremly well in our test plots over the years and they tend to have consistantly good yields. They hold good milk production per acre.

I chose to plant Pioneer® brand alfalfa simply because we always get good results. I started with it, then planted another brand for a little while and I went back to Pioneer because it was simply better.
