A learning experience Two women from India wrap up year on Iowa dairy farm By Sherry Newell Contributing Writer
SHERRILL, Iowa – They had no idea what to expect when they left India for Iowa, but after a year on the Brimeyer dairy farm near Sherrill, Ankita Rani and Arubam Mona are leaving with an experience they said they will remember forever. The 23-year-old women completed a year-long internship at the farm Sept. 30, after studying at Dolphin PG College of Life Sciences and Agriculture in Punjab, India. They were matched with the Brimeyers through Communicating for Agriculture Exchange Programs based in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. The Brimeyers heard about the program from a neighbor. “We checked into it because we could not ďƒžnd reliable help. We milk at 3:30 a.m. and needed people we could rely on,â€? said Judy Brimeyer, who runs the dairy with her husband, Rick, and their son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Jessy. Rani and Mona arrived in the fall of 2019. “We knew the United States has great technology, and we could learn from being here and apply that knowledge (in India),â€? Mona said. The dairy provided wages and housing, while sharing American culture. The women visited DairyLab Services, an apple orchard, a greenhouse, a goat farm, a processing plant and other agricultural businesses. Their arrival coincided with the 2019 World Dairy Expo, which meant one of their rst experiences was a trip to Madison, Wisconsin. The women became familiar with how a typical Iowa dairy operates – different in many ways from those in India. Rani said the Indian culture includes treating cows as sacred animals and letting them die naturally. At her college’s 150-cow dairy farm, there is an area for cows retired from the herd. Across the country, cows are often taken care of by the community. “In every town, there is a special place for an old cow, especially in northern India,” Rani said. “In the south, people do eat beef, so maybe 5% of the cows go to the butcher.” Rani’s favorite role at the Brimeyer dairy was attaching the milking units and cleaning the parlor. Mona preferred working on the end of the rotation, checking cows for problems. She also enjoyed feeding calves. Mona took note of a key difference in how milk from treated cows is handled. “Here, farmers are concerned about milk quality and making sure antibiotics are not in the milk,” she said. “In India, we do not worry about that.” While here, Mona began drinking milk, something she had not done in India. Mona also discovered how dairies use nutritionists and balance the dairy cows’ diets. She said she hopes to put that knowledge to use in India, where both she and Rani will pursue masters degrees in agronomics. Eventually, Mona hopes to start a medium-sized dairy with her father. Rani said their craziest Iowa experience was in March, when a tornado left the Brimeyer farm with signicant damage. “I was upstairs when the storm started,” Rani said. “Then the lights went off and we heard the wind. We could see stuff ying here and there. When the storm stopped, Judy shouted for us, and we saw all this disaster. Everyone was worried.” The family included the women in holiday and family gatherings, which Judy said she found enjoyable. “I just enjoyed hearing about their culture and what they do with their fam-

Rani’s days began at 3:30 with milking cows. ilies,” Judy said. “They tell me young people are very respectful of their elders there. They called us ‘Ma’am’ and ‘Sir;’ that’s how they were raised. We in America have lost that.” Mona said she was disappointed to learn how many elderly people here live alone. She said families of several generations stay together in India. But she also said the experience in eastern Iowa was amazing. “Each and every one of the family helped us,” Mona said. “They were very patient. We thank them and the people in Dubuque and Sherrill. We now have a family in America where we can go any time. We have a house and parents here. Thanks for a great experience.” The CAEP model normally includes 30 days of travel as the year ends, but the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has prevented that for the women. Instead, they are camping, horseback riding, attending a wedding, shopping and nding other activities to nish out their experience. The Brimeyers planned to begin another year of CAEP participation this year, but they said the United States government is not allowing new placements for now. And although they enjoyed hosting Rani and Mona, they do not expect to visit them in their home country. “We’re homebodies,” Judy said. “Maybe if we retire.”

NMC transitions its annual meeting to virtual format Given the continued global health impact of COVID-19, the National Mastitis Council (NMC) board of directors approved presenting its annual meeting virtually. This virtual event will replace the in-person NMC 60th Annual Meeting, previously scheduled for Jan. 25-28, 2021, in Dallas. The revised agenda of short courses, general sessions, Technology Transfer Session and Research and Development Summaries Session will be announced in November. “While it’s disappointing to cancel the in-person 2021 NMC Annual Meeting, the safety of NMC members, their families, conference attendees, industry partners and the communities we serve is our top priority,” said NMC President Sarne De Vliegher, Ghent University, Belgium. “We look forward to seeing milk quality enthusiasts – from around the world – on the virtual highway in January.” The NMC board of directors made another bold move and voted to offer NMC Annual Meeting registration for just $100 to NMC members. This is a signicant savings compared with NMC’s previous annual meetings. This will help extend NMC’s global reach to reduce mastitis and enhance milk quality. Tentatively, NMC’s main presentations will be offered the week of Jan. 25, with short courses potentially being offered the week of Jan. 18. All general sessions will be recorded. Thus, NMC Annual Meeting registrants may access these at their convenience. Small groups will meet at “time zone friendly” times to foster networking opportunities and “catch up” with NMC colleagues. FarmFirst transitions annual district member meetings to virtual format The FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative board of directors made the tough decision to move it’s district member meetings from 17 in-person meetings throughout its seven state membership region to a single-day virtual format due to concerns and uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The virtual meeting will be on Wednesday, December 2, 2020. “Our cooperative’s district member meetings have always been a great opportunity for members to gather, enjoy a wonderful meal, receive updates on cooperative programs, services, and advocacy efforts, and speak directly with cooperative leaders,” says John Rettler, dairy farmer from Neosho, Wis. and president of FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative. “This decision was not easy because the board would like nothing more than to meet with our members, especially after the challenging year we’ve all experienced. While the experience will be much different this year, we hope that our members will take the time to join us virtually on December 2.” Similar to past district meetings, members will be provided with a year in review of the cooperative’s accomplishments and program updates. In addition, there will be time for members to discuss potential resolutions to the cooperative’s public policy. Elections for board of director positions, District & Resolution Committee members and delegates will be conducted by a mail-in ballot only and will be sent in early November. Members will receive reports from the staff that lead the Family Dairies and Fox Valley Quality Control Lab divisions, respectively. National Milk Producers Federation President and CEO, Jim Mulhern, will also join virtually for a realtime update on dairy policy, trade and other issues being discussed and acted on in Washington, D.C. “Although we’ve had to change our format to due to myriad of challenges due to social distancing and size limits for public events, we are excited to conduct our meeting virtually as it may provide more opportunity for more of our members to participate and learn more about their cooperative,” says Jeff Lyon, general manager for FarmFirst. “By holding a virtual meeting our cooperative leaders and national policy leaders can speak directly to our members and at the same time we can be respectful of members’ time.” Members are encouraged to sign up to be notied of when to register for the virtual district meeting by

Minnesota/Select Sires Co-op, Inc. gives $125,179 back to members with COVID-19 relief program To help ease the burden of the many unknowns faced by producers during the COVID-19 pandemic, recommended by management and approved by the Board of Directors, Minnesota/Select Sires Co-op, Inc. gave $125,179.00 back to memberowners through their COVID-19 Relief Program. As a farmer owned and controlled cooperative, the success of member-owners is the top priority of the co-op. This relief program was designed with the co-op’s diverse member base in mind. During the months of June, July and August, dairy customers received a 7% credit on all dairy semen purchased applied to their accounts in September. Similarly, for beef customers, a 7% credit was earned on beef semen purchases in April, May and June which will be applied to accounts in January 2021. For more than 30 years the cooperative has been working to offer the best genetics and services to meet producer’s needs. National DHIA seeks veterinary student scholarship applicants National Dairy Herd Information Association (DHIA) is providing $1,500 scholarships to third-year or fourth-year college of veterinary medicine students. Applicants must be enrolled at a college that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education. Judges will evaluate applicants based on overall interest as a veterinarian planning to work in dairy, involvement in dairy medicine and extra-curricular activities, and interest in using dairy software and dairy records to aid in dairy management and in improving animal health. To apply for a National DHIA Scholarship for Veterinary Students, applicants must submit a letter of application and two reference letters. The letter of application requires applicants to submit information regarding their area of interest/specialty, academic background, experience using DHIA data, career plans, issues challenging dairy veterinary medicine and solutions to address those challenges. FarmFirst disaster benet pays members dealing with derecho aftermath For farmers in Newhall, Iowa, they weren’t very familiar with the term ‘derecho’ and what kind of impact it could have on their dairy farming operations. However, on what was seemingly a typical August day, a few dairy farmers quickly realized the power and fury of a ‘derecho’ as their farms experienced unprecedented damage from the summer storm yielding peak wind speeds of over 110 mph. Thanks to FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative’s disaster benet program, cooperative members facing milk income loss on their dairy operations were able to receive some nancial coverage from their loss through the cooperative’s program. Three FarmFirst members were directly impacted by the derecho on August 11 in Benton County, Iowa and in total received more than $40,000 for various damages negatively impacting their milk income. “We never want to use benets like these, but we certainly appreciate having them in situations like this,” said Brian Schanbacher, dairy farmer in Newhall, Iowa who was impacted by the derecho. “You never anticipate anything like this to happen on your farm. Even six weeks later, it’s still hard to comprehend.” The damages on these farms is immense. Free-stall barns have the roofs completely ripped off, exposing cattle to the elements. A milking parlor has a portion of the roof missing, with metal and insulation hanging from the exposed roof. A silo that was recently lled with corn silage was lifted, causing the silo to break upon landing with its roof found two elds over. An older wooden barn is still standing and has its roof, while one side is missing more than half of the wall on its west side. Large scraps of metal were strewn everywhere. Pine trees were simply snapped in half. Yet, other buildings on the farm didn’t have any damage. “Of our 40 calf hutches, we only found four of them on the farm,” said Ron Franck, dairy farmer in Newhall, Iowa who had considerable damage to the buildings on his farm. “Thankfully, all the cattle, including the calves were found and still alive.” “It’s amazing how certain buildings were damaged and yet others on our farm are practically untouched,” said Brian Schanbacher. “All we can do is take it one day at a time. It’s going to take longer than we’d like but we’ll get there.” FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative visited with these impacted members a week after the derecho came through, and less than six weeks later, District 6 FarmFirst board member Bob Dietzel was there once again, but this time with a check in hand for each member impacted by the storm. “It’s impossible to predict when a natural disaster will strike and how it will affect your farm,” said Bob Dietzel, who is also a dairy farmer from East Dubuque, Ill. “FarmFirst has this program in place to help support our members in their time of need and it has proven to be an appreciated program by many members through the years.” Over the past year, FarmFirst’s disaster benets program has awarded more than $81,000 in disaster payments for 13 different member farms. FarmFirst members are eligible for these payments through the cooperative’s disaster benets program, assisting against the loss of milk income caused by the death of a cow by either lightning or electrocution, the loss of electric power or due to impassable roads due to snow or ooding. “Dairy farmers have a diverse set of needs when it comes to service and representation, and FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative is proud to be able to meet many of those needs,” said Dietzel. “Whether its representing members on dairy policy issues, speaking up regarding federal programs or providing nancial support after experiencing milk income loss, FarmFirst works to serve our members every day.” The disaster benet program is a unique benet for FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative members. Pundsack progresses alongside farm 19-year old takes pivotal role in family dairy By Andrea Borgerding andrea.b@dairystar.com
In October 2010, Dairy Star talked to Brady and Riley Pundsack for the Kids Corner feature. At the time, Brady and Riley were 13 and 9. We spoke with Riley, who continues to work on the family farm, for this issue about what he has been up to 10 years later. FREEPORT, Minn. – At 9 years old, Riley Pundsack was enjoying farm life as a kid growing up on his family’s 120-cow dairy farm in Stearns County near Freeport. Ten years later, Pundsack is working full time on his family’s farm, Pundsack Dairy, with the goal of some day transitioning into ownership. The dairy is now milking 128 cows with two robotic milkers in a sand-bedded freestall facility. Pundsack is the youngest of Keith and Roxane’s four children. He attributes much of his farming knowledge to his older siblings as well as taking an active role in the farm’s progression with technology. “I learned a lot from them,” Pundsack said of his brothers

Pundsack, however, knew as a high school student that farming was his destiny. “I like eldwork and working on engines,” Pundsack said. “I also do quite a bit of mechanical work on the farm.” Growing up, Pundsack often scraped barns while his two older brothers milked cows. These regular chores helped Pundsack develop his skills and passion for driving tractors and equipment versus daily milking and management of the cattle. “Milking cows wasn’t what I was into,” Pundsack said. When Pundsack was 14, his family installed robotic milkers. The change allowed Pundsack to learn a new management style for the dairy. “With the robots, it’s not so much hands on,” Pundsack said. “You’re still in the barn the same amount of time but it’s different.” Pundsack also worked on neighboring farms in high school. Today, he continues working one day a week at a neighboring robotic dairy doing mechanical work and eldwork. “I like working on my own and not necessarily having a boss all the time,” Pundsack said. “When you’re farming, you can do your own thing for the most
part.” Looking at the past 10 years, Pundsack said his family farm looks very different than it did when he was 9 years old. More equipment has become automated and computers have been incorporated into all aspects of the farm. “You have to know more about computers than before,” Pundsack said. “It used to be all hands-on physical work, now it’s a lot more monitoring information.” Aside from learning from his brother, Pundsack has been mostly self-taught. He has considered going on to college. “I gured I can learn from other people,” Pundsack said. Through the years, Pundsack has managed to adapt and learn from the farm’s changes and progression in technology. Through it all, Pundsack knows the farm has given him more knowledge than any other path he could have taken. “Growing up on the farm, you realize the meaning of work,” Pundsack said. “You’re responsible to get the work done.” Pundsack hopes his lifetime of experience will carry him to some day successfully take over the family farm. “It’s a passion – either you like it or you don’t,” Pundsack said. “For me, it’s more of a lifestyle than a job.”
