Lepke working as herdsman on New Zealand farm By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
MADISON, Wis. – For most of her life, the trip to World Dairy Expo has taken Lindsey Lepke, a native of Viroqua, Wis., just a couple of hours. This year, it took her a couple of days and a trans-Pacic ight. Since mid-July, Lepke has been working as a herdsman on a New Zealand dairy farm. Frontier Farms, Ltd., is a typical New Zealand dairy farm according to Lepke. The 315-cow milking herd is made up of Jersey-Holstein crosses, purebred Ayrshires and Holsteins, and New Zealand Friesians. It is located in the northern part of New Zealand’s North Island, about two hours south of Auckland. The farm is owned by John and Sue Young and managed by their son, Campbell. “It wasn’t something I’d necessarily planned to do,” Lepke said of working in New Zealand. “But when the opportunity presented itself, I went ahead and took it.” That opportunity came in the form of contacts made when Lepke traveled to Australia’s International Dairy Week to work for a show string. While there, she made a contact with another tter who knew of someone needing help at the New Zealand Dairy Event, so Lepke made a pit-stop in New Zealand
on her way back to the United States. It was at the New Zealand Dairy Event that she met Campbell Young. In May, he contacted Lepke asking her if she knew of another American who might be interested in coming to work for them, as their current American worker was nishing up her year with them. “I’d kind of taken a break from the industry and was bartending, but I knew I wanted to get back to cows,” Lepke said. “When Campbell asked if I knew of anyone interested, I thought, ‘Why not?’” Lepke began the arduous process of obtaining a 12-month work visa, allowing her to travel to New Zealand for work. The Youngs frequently have workers from North America and have a farm advisor who helps with the paperwork. “I needed to provide two letters of recommendation, a detailed resume, have a physical and submit ngerprints to the FBI,” Lepke said. Her visa application was approved July 4, and she left the United States to begin the year’s employment on July 15. Leaving Wisconsin’s hot and humid summer, Lepke arrived in New Zealand in the dead of winter, but found the climate to be moderate compared to that of Wisconsin, with the coldest day being around 32 degrees Fahrenheit. ConƟnued from LEPKE | Page 2 ern hemisphere, Lepke has been told the warmest days will be about 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and January being the hottest month. Lepke’s primary duties have been milking the herd twice a day and caring for calves and youngstock, along with cleaning and general farm chores. There are no barns for the cows, and according to Lepke, the only time they are under a roof is when they are in the parlor, which consists of a roof and one side wall. Two people work together each day to milk the herd in a swing-30 parabone parlor. Milking takes about 2.5 hours when the full herd is milking. In the parlor, the cows are fed a pelleted feed. “It took some getting used to, basically milking outside,” Lepke said of the differences
between dairying in New Zealand and Wisconsin. The Young’s herd is primarily grass-fed, using rotational grazing in paddocks that average about 3 acres each. Paddocks are moved twice a day. The herd is supplemented with corn silage. The farm makes some baleage to supplement the grazing during the drier summer months as well. The Youngs employ seasonal breeding on their farm, calving a group of about 160 head between mid-July to midSeptember, and then calve another group starting in midMarch, having a large portion of the herd dried off during the hottest summer months. Cows are bred using A.I. for about six weeks, and then a bull is used for clean-up. The Youngs often use beef bulls because of the calves having a
greater value. Production testing is utilized by the Youngs, with test dates occurring every 75 days. The purebred cows in the herd are also evaluated with a typeappraisal program. Vaccination and dehorning protocols are similar to that of the United States. Raising calves is slightly different as calves are raised on group feeders. “Having grown up raising calves on bottles in calf hutches, I’d never have thought I’d like group feeders,” Lepke said. “But I’ve fallen in love with the system, and how the calves grow and develop.” Lepke said the overall tone of the dairy industry in New Zealand is more positive. Dairy farmers are paid based on kilograms of milk-solids instead of on volume of milk

Lepke estimates average production to be about 17,000 pounds of milk. “They are making money there,” Lepke said. “Their inputs are so much lower, with no barns and minimal equipment.” Currently, the country is dealing with Mycoplasma Bovis and is working to become the second country, following Norway, to successfully eradicate the disease. The Youngs will be seeking a new employee, possibly from North America, to replace Lepke when her visa is due. “There are tons of opportunities for Americans to work on dairy farms down there,” Lepke said. “There are lots of different kinds of farms and lots of different kinds of experiences available. NEW ULM, Minn. - Samantha Seidl’s morning starts early. She wakes up at 1 a.m. and heads to Associated Milk Producers, Inc., in New Ulm, Minn., where she is employed by Ibberson Hauling. “I was asked by my boss at the time if I would be interested in driving and I gured, why not?” Seidl said. “I ended up really liking it and decided to pick up more and more days.” Seidl now hauls milk full time. Her day continues with warming up the truck and checking it over before she hits the road for her rst round of pickups. She makes three or four stops, depending on the day, and then comes to AMPI to unload the rst truck. Then, she has a little down time before she starts the second load when farmers are done
milking. That route has another two to three stops. Seidl drives about 80 miles a day. “I thought that at the very least I would have my CDL,” Seidl said. “That has turned out to be pretty handy.”

Seidl grew up on a 45-cow dairy near Sleepy Eye, Minn. “I always helped with the cows and feeding calves,” Seidl said. “I started working for my neighbors after my parents sold the cows in 2010, and worked at a sale barn for a little while, too. part of why I took the job.” Because Seidl is out and about before most others in the area, she has had a couple distinct interactions. “One morning I did my rst stop like normal and as I was leaving I noticed an orange glow in the sky,” Seidl said. “It’s the middle of the night, it’s dark out, so I drove around and saw that it was an abandoned house on re. So, I called 911 and gave them the location, and called the farmer whose milk I had just picked up, and he got a hold of the owner.” Seidl said the best part of being a milk hauler is interacting with the farmers and listening to the radio. “I like the early morning route because there’s no one else on the road,” Seidl said. “It’s just me out there. I think that’s pretty cool.” Seidl said weather can pose a challenge. The winter roads and
muddy spring driveways are obstacles. She said while she has gotten stuck before, farmers are available to help if needed. Seidl has never had to reject milk, but has come close when a tank had warmer milk on the top and cooler milk on the bottom. She said milk temperature can be a real issue for farmers, and they may need to dump their milk if it is not cool enough. “Keeping milk cool is very important,” Seidl said. “It warms up a bit in the tanker so starting at a cool temperature is very important.” Seidl is not the only female to haul milk in the area. “The boss had hired another gal who had done this job in the past when she was my age, so she trained me in and did a really good job,” Seidl said. “It was pretty fun having her teach me.”

Children who are raised on farms are often involved in work requiring the use of machinery. Safety in those situations is sometimes overlooked. The AgriSafe Network hosted a safety webinar focusing on children and tractors Sept. 19. Among other things, the webinar discussed common myths associated with children and tractors, visitor safety, safety concerns with infants in tractors, and resources to help safeguard children around tractors. This membership organization represents health professionals and educators who strive to reduce health issues in the agriculture community. “When you talk with farmers, there are a lot of perceived benets to raising kids on the farm,” said Marsha Salswedel, agricultural youth safety specialist with the organization. “And a lot of those benets are very real.” Children develop a passion for farming, a love and respect for the land, a deepened familial bond by working with family members, and it builds character, Salswedel said. It also instills a work ethic and understanding of the life cycle. Despite these benets, however, farming is one of the most dangerous occupations in the country. There are 2.2 million farms in the United States and about half a million youth work on those farms. In addition, 30 million children visit farms each year. According to the AgriSafe Network, a child

dies in an ag-related incident every three days, with half of the incidents happening to kids who are not working at the time. These numbers have gone down in recent years, overall, but the number of incidents in children ages 10-19 have started to increase. The suspicion is that children are performing work that does not match their abilities, thus increasing the risk of injury. Youth are 50 times more likely to die working in agriculture than any other industry combined, according to the Center for Disease Control. The leading causes of these fatalities are tractors, followed by ATVs. These numbers are also often under-reported, said Salswedel. The data tends to be pieced together from various sources. The webinar also addressed common myths and hazards associated with tractor safety and youth. “There’s a myth that children riding on tractors is necessary to get them interested in farming,” Salswedel said. “But there’s a hazard that tractors are responsible for 41 percent of the accidental farm deaths of children under 15, yet four out of ve farm children regularly ride tractors with family members.” Salswedel said if children fall out of a tractor, they can be injured by the fall or run over by the machinery. The extra rider may fall outside the roll over protective structure protection zone or discover other hazards inside a tractor, like sharp edges or heavy tools. Turn to CHILDREN, TRACTORS | Page 8

Get to know Maggie Cronk of Henning, Minn.
What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved with 4-H. In 4-H, I show cattle, compete in dairy project bowl, and am a part of a dairy club. Also, I have been a dairy princess ambassador for two years for East Otter Tail County.
Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. My family has two dairy farms. Each of my parents took over their parents’ dairy farms that were side by side. They never combined the farms, so they went on farming each at their own farms, but helping each other. They even sell to two different milk co-ops.
Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? We were leasing cattle to a family that was in the 4-H club I joined, so they convinced me to be a part of 4-H. My favorite part of 4-H is showing cattle and being in dairy project bowl. I get to be around others who love cattle and get to learn more about dairy cattle, whether it be from nutrition to basic facts. I had always wanted to be a dairy princess for as long as I could remember. I love telling others my story and about dairy farmers while doing this.
Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I help more so on my mom’s farm, but I do help on my dad’s farm, too. My main job is to care for the calves, so I feed and water them. Also, I help milk if I am around and do a lot of the bookwork for breeding and calving. I do these jobs along with miscellaneous work my parents need me to do.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I have learned many leadership skills from being in 4-H, along with strengthening my condence. Before 4-H, I would have never thought I would be able to go to a national conference and meet people from all over the United States and Canada. Also, through dairy project bowl I have learned more about cattle, especially in the nutrition area.
Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. When I went to the National 4-H Dairy Conference this year, I met kids from all over and got to hear from speakers who gave good advice. Also, I got to visit places like ABS Global, Hoard’s Dairyman Farm, Crave Brothers Farm and World Dairy Expo.
What’s your favorite social media? Pinterest, because I can get a lot of ideas for a variety of areas. What are your career aspirations? My plan after high school is to go to college and major in animal science with a minor in pre-veterinarian medicine. I hope to go on to vet school and become a large animal veterinarian. I would love to go back to either my family farm or start a new farm after I get married.

Who do you look up to? My parents, because they have persevered through so much. Whether it be the low milk prices these past few years, or also the re that destroyed my mom’s barn or the tornado that caused us to have to rebuild some of the buildings. They both have shown me that sometimes you have to go with whatever life throws at you and not give up.
If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? How people look at the dairy industry. Most people who don’t live on or have any connections to dairy farms don’t know the true story of dairy farmers. So, most people don’t realize dairy farmers care about their cattle and work to keep them healthy and happy. I would spread the word about how farmers care for their animals and answer questions to the best of my ability. I do this already, because I am a dairy princess ambassador. We help to spread our love for cows and dairy farms.

(AMPI) cheesemakers in Iowa and Wisconsin topped their classes at the 2018 World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest held in Madison, Wis. A Monterey Jack entry made by cheesemakers at AMPI’s Sanborn, Iowa, plant placed rst in the class. Two entries from cheesemakers at AMPI’s Jim Falls, Wis., plant – a Colby Jack and a Monterey Jack – placed second and third to sweep the class. This is repeat recognition for the Jim Falls cheesemakers who earned rst-place Colby Jack honors earlier this year in the World Championship Cheese Contest. Entries by AMPI cheesemakers from Blair, Wis., and Jim Falls placed rst and third, respectively, in the highly competitive Mild Cheddar class. The cooperative also scored a sweep of the Flavored Pasteurized Process Cheese class with entries from cheesemakers at the Portage, Wis., plant. “Three rst-place winners, and claiming every award the judges had to give in two categories, speaks to the consistent quality of cheese made in AMPI’s dairy farmer-owned plants,” said Mike Hinrichsen, AMPI vice president of cheese and whey manufacturing. “At AMPI, we know cheese. It’s what we do.” In addition, whey protein concentrate manufactured at the cooperative’s Paynesville, Minn., plant captured rst place in the 34 percent class and third place in the 80 percent competition. This year’s contest attracted 1,400 entries from dairy processors throughout North America. AMPI’s rst-place dairy products were be auctioned off Oct. 2 during the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. A portion of the auction proceeds fund scholarships for students pursuing careers in the dairy industry. Fuel Up to Play 60, Chelan Fresh collaborate to increase access to nutritious school food Fuel Up to Play 60 and Chelan Fresh are increasing student access to more nutritious food choices, including dairy, in schools. Chelan Fresh, one of Washington state’s largest suppliers of apples and pears and the nation’s largest provider of fresh cherries, will provide portable breakfast/ salad bar carts to 15 Fuel Up to Play 60 schools in 11 states. Fuel Up to Play 60 is the nation’s leading in-school wellness program created by America’s dairy farmers through their dairy checkoff and the National Football League (NFL), with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). More than 13 million U.S. students come from food insecure households that lack the means to regularly provide enough nutritious food. The portable breakfast/ salad bar carts are an innovative solution that will reach nearly 9,000 students, serving an estimated 1.3 million meals annually. Research shows that improved nutrition, including daily breakfast, and increased physical activity can lead to improved academic performance. These risks threaten both human and animal health, they say. Flood waters may contain sewage, bacteria and other pathogens, pesticides, chemical wastes, and other toxins that contaminate ďƒželd crops and stored feed and may sicken animals that consume them. Mold growth is often a problem, both in and outside of ďƒ&#x;ooded areas, in a wet humid season like much of Wisconsin experienced this year. “Mycotoxins produced by some molds may sicken animals that consume moldy feed, and could also sicken people who consume milk or meat from those animals,â€? says Acting State Veterinarian Dr. Darlene Konkle. “We’ve sent our environmental specialists to check feed mills in ďƒ&#x;ooded areas of the state to check whether feed products or ingredients may have come in contact with ďƒ&#x;ood waters,â€? notes feed program manager Heather Bartley of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. “Producers who store ingredients at elevators or feed mills until they need it for on-farm mixing should be aware of the ďƒ&#x;ood status of those businesses and the possibility of mycotoxins.â€? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has posted information about harvesting crops for producers in ďƒ&#x;ooded areas on its website. The agency advises testing crops exposed to ďƒ&#x;ood waters for mycotoxins, heavy metals, bacterial pathogens and chemicals, especially organophosphate and chlorinated hydrocarbon
pesticides. Depending on the test results, it may be possible to recondition the crop for use as animal feed. Any feed ingredients or feed showing signs of mold should also be tested for mycotoxins, including aďƒ&#x;atoxin, which may be a carcinogen. Dairy Task Force Sub-Committee meetings announced The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and the University of Wisconsin System today announced the meeting schedule for the nine sub-committees of the Wisconsin Dairy Task Force 2.0. At the August Task Force meeting, members created nine sub-committees which they volunteered to serve on. The meetings will take place in October and November at various locations around the state. “These sub-committee meetings provide an opportunity to discuss in-depth the issues that were identiďƒžed at the ďƒžrst Task Force meeting in August,â€? said Task Force Chairman Mark Stephenson. “The hope is that these sub-committees can begin to develop ideas to address these issues, and perhaps begin to report some of their preliminary thoughts back to the full Task Force at the next general meeting sometime in November or December.â€? “We are pleased with the interest and commitment by those serving on the Task Force, but it is also vital that others involved in the dairy industry take time to provide their input,â€? said DATCP Secretary Sheila Harsdorf. “I encourage farmers, processors, and others involved in the dairy industry to share their thoughts and suggestions with the Task Force either by talking to a Task Force member or providing their comments at dairytaskforce.wi.gov.â€? The Task Force is charged with making recommendations on actions needed to maintain a viable and proďƒžtable dairy industry in Wisconsin. In the late 1980s, the UW System and DATCP created a dairy task force in response to concern over the competitiveness, proďƒžtability and economic viability of the state’s dairy industry at that time. The 75 recommendations of that task force, many of which have been implemented by the industry, have been instrumental in retaining Wisconsin as a leading dairy state. The economic impact of the dairy industry in Wisconsin is signiďƒžcant, generating $43.4 billion in state-wide economic impact every year and creating nearly 80,000 jobs. The industry accounts for nearly half of Wisconsin agriculture’s total economic impact.
