Luke Bryan kicks off tour at Marshall dairy Statz Bros. Farm hosts 20,000 country music fans By Stacey Smart

MARSHALL, Wis. – The night of Sept. 26 is one that dairy farmer Joe Statz will not soon forget. This was the night when country music sensation Luke Bryan performed at Statz’s farm in Marshall, Wis. The concert was the opening night of Luke Bryan’s 11th annual farm tour, and Statz, a country music-lover and one of the owners of Statz Bros. Farm, was thrilled to welcome Bryan along with the singer’s many fans. “My wife, Lisa, and I had a blast,” said Statz, who farms with his sons, Zach and Austin, and cousins, Troy and Wes Statz. “It was so much fun.” The 4,500-cow, 8,000-acre farm is no stranger to big crowds having hosted Farm Technology Days in 2015. However, the Luke Bryan concert drew the most people ever to set foot on their land at once. Twenty thousand people were onsite for the sold-out show in which Bryan gave fans an energetic hourand-a-half performance singing favorites like, “Country Girl (Shake It for Me),” “That’s My Kind of Night” and “Kick the Dust Up.” The music-lled night began with opening acts Mitchell Tenpenny, the Peach Pickers and Cole Swindell. Statz Bros. Farm was one of six

Other locations included farms in Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma and Kansas. Bryan, a small-town farm boy from Georgia, launched his farm tour as a way to give back to America’s farmers. Bryan awards college scholarships to students from farming families who are attending local colleges or universities near the tour stops and has handed out 60 scholarships to date. Bayer, one of the tour’s sponsors, also gives back by donating a meal to food banks and local farmers for every fan who uses the #HeresToTheFarmer hashtag on social media. Bayer has donated nearly three million meals thus

Agreeing on a price for corn silage can be difcult given the lack of knowledge on what might be a going price for the feed source. To get a fair price requires knowledge of both the expenses such as the cost of fertilizer, eld operations, and markets (grains, straw, mild, and silage) can make that price difcult to obtain. There are a few rules of thumb that have been used. One of the more common is that normal corn silage standing in the eld might be worth six to eight times the price of corn. This is based on an estimate of 6 to 8 bushels per ton of silage. This may not be the best option as data from

In addition, Statz Bros. Farm received 24 tickets to the show and were invited backstage to meet Bryan, take pictures with him and get autographs. “We’re big Luke Bryan fans,” Statz said. “And, I wanted to give him a tour of the farm so bad, but it didn’t work out. We did get to visit with him for a couple minutes though, and he’s a very

In those same eld trials, when corn was harvested at 70% moisture, yielded 19.5 tons of silage which is only 6.4 bushels of corn per acre. Environment may also play a role in the amount of grain in a silage sample. Testing samples for moisture and feed quality is one way to help decide what the silage is worth and can help eliminate some of the questions around quality. nice, down-to-earth guy.” Bryan entered the show with a blast of country as he drove a four-wheeler across the stage while singing his hit single, “What Makes You Country.” Situated in a hay eld between the two Statz dairies, the concert venue attracted people of all ages, including several dairy farmers. Other than taking hay off the eld prior to the show and chopping corn silage from the eld that would become the parking lot, Statz said there was not much to prep. “Luke’s crew took care of the rest,” he said. “They came in the morning of the concert at 6 a.m. to set up and said they would be bringing 12 to 14 semis, 25 buses and 450 people to do the work. By 12:45 p.m., they were already parking cars so people could tailgate before the gates opened at 5.” How did Statz Bros. Farm make it onto Luke Bryan’s radar? The Farm Bureau provided names of three farms they felt would work, and Statz’s farm was one of them. “They wanted a farm located within 20 miles of Madison with good access to the interstate and highways,” Statz said. “I think hosting Farm Tech Days put us ahead of the other candidates because they knew we had the right setup for a large event.” Although some people might nd it a nuisance to open their farm to that many people, Statz said, “We wanted to do it and were happy to be chosen as the host farm. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves, because we sure did. It was denitely a night to remember.”

Each one takes a slightly different approach to pricing corn silage, so make sure to experiment with them to decide which one best ts your needs and situation. Remember that the person buying the crop is also thinking about yield, quality and price versus other options. The price that suits the needs of both parties as best as it can is the end goal. Food justice advocate Miah Ulysse will be the keynote speaker at the 6th national Women in Sustainable Agriculture Conference, taking place Oct. 17-19, 2019 at the InterContinental Saint Paul Riverfront hotel in downtown St. Paul. Her keynote, “Working in Harmony to Transform the Food System,” includes her insights on ways to be effective change agents in local food systems without succumbing to burnout. Ulysse has advanced local, state, and federal food policy, including the establishment of the Urban Agriculture Grant Program, one of the rst urban agriculture-specic state-funded grant programs in the country. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? I am involved in these organizations and activities because of the memories and friends that are made. My favorite is FFA because of the endless opportunities the organization provides. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. When my team and I became state champions at the state 4-H dairy judging competition. We competed at the national level and World Dairy Expo. This was an eye opening experience for me as it took me to a level of condence I never thought I could go to. What is your favorite social media? Instagram, because it is easy to navigate my way throughout different posts, keep up to date on news feeds and it is easy to post your own photos. What are your career aspirations? My goal in life is to get a degree in animal science and genetics. I would like to become an animal nutritionist or work for a genetics company. What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I have learned to have a good work ethic, be respectful, responsible and have passion with everything you do. You cannot achieve your goals without putting in work. All of these activities have brought me to the person I am today. Who do you look up to? I look up to my dad, Scott. He has taught me endless advice about life. He has taught me how to work hard, establish a drive within myself and to work for what you get. My dad has been my best friend and biggest supporter since I was young. I have been greatly blessed that I have been able to grow up in the dairy industry.
