Michael Kolb worked with engineers of the FAN separator to redesign the auger by decreasing the space between the auger and the screen to get the solids drier. “We didn’t design the barn with this in mind,” Kolb said. The barn was actually built for mattresses. Their other freestall barn, which they still use to house part of their milking herd, has mattresses and the Kolbs felt it wasn’t the best t for their new barn with cow comfort being a priority. “It was the ninth hour, and we were starting to look at other options,” Kolb said. The Kolbs looked at prices for sand bedding and manure solids, talked to farmers and looked at facilities. In the end, the Kolbs went with the composted bedding for their new barn. “We saw it as an endless bedding supply at a lower cost than sand,” Kolb said. “From the systems we looked at that were using manure solids, the cows were comfortable and the farms were having success with it.” The Kolbs built the new barn, installed the separator and a 19,990-gallon reception pit in 2009. MICHAEL KOLB When the cows are brought in for their morning milking, the wet spots are raked off and the manure is taken off the top, then they come through to level off the stalls. For evening milking, the stalls are once again raked and fresh bedding is added. “We ll the stalls a couple inches higher than the curb in the back of the stall since the cows are always moving material out of the stalls,” Kolb said. “Adding a thin layer of bedding more frequently is also key because it allows the solids to dry more in the stalls.” Kolb has seen the benets of using manure solids on his farm since installing the separator. “The cows are doing well with it. They are comfortable and clean, there are less feet and leg issues and the alleyways are dryer,” Kolb said. “The compost bedding also heats itself up to 170 to 180 degrees. It self sterilizes.” Although the old barn still has mattresses, Kolb is looking to change it to deep-bedded stalls to match the new barn with the success they have had with the manure solids. “The manure handling has been much easier and it is benecial for the cows,” Kolb said. “We made the right choice.”

ARLINGTON, Wis. – Warning: Your neighbors might think you’re crazy if you try this. Plant corn one day, and the next day interseed alfalfa. The idea might sound odd, but that’s just what researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the USDA Forage Research Center have been doing. Mark Renz, a UW agronomist, talked about planting alfalfa into corn that’s intended for silage at a recent agronomy/soils eld day at the Arlington Agricultural Research Station, Arlington, Wis. If there’s a benet to this interseeding, it’s the head start alfalfa can get on its production the following
year, Renz said. One big problem, though, is the competition between the corn and alfalfa for nutrients, sunlight and water. That competition often favors the corn, leaving the alfalfa stand to fail. On the other hand, advancements in crop production technology have made this kind of interseeding more likely to succeed. Planting Roundup Ready corn and Roundup Ready alfalfa means weed control is simplied, Renz said. Cleareld corn and Pursuit is another combination being tried. People in the dairy community Haberkorn is new plant manager at SDSU Davis Dairy Plant John Haberkorn has accepted the position of Plant Manager at the Davis Dairy Plant at South Dakota State University, pending approval by the Board of Regents. As Plant Manager Haberkorn will be responsible for operating the Davis Dairy Plant as well as supervising and training students who will enter the dairy industry after graduation. Goelz appointed to Organic Advisory Task Force Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) Commissioner Dave Frederickson has announced 15 appointments to the Minnesota Organic Advisory Task Force (OATF), which was authorized by the Minnesota Legislature during the 2013 session. Organic dairy producer, Adam Goelz from Maple
Lake, Minn. is one of the 15 members on the new task force. The task force meets two to four times per year and members serve three year terms. Blackwelder competes nationally on NDSU Dairy Judging Team Members of North Dakota State University's dairy judging team placed in several divisions of the recent 45th annual invitational dairy judging contest at the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pa. Brett Blackwelder, a senior from Chokio, Minn. placed eighth in Jerseys. Blackwelder's team was third in Jerseys, fth in Holsteins and eighth overall.
Wisconsin youth place in World Dairy Expo Fitting Contest In its fourth year, World Dairy Expo Fitting Contest saw 10 accomplished youth tters from ages 16 to 21 years old and from across the U.S., Canada and Germany compete. Each contestant was responsible to bring an unclipped animal to the contest and their own equipment and supplies.
