Riebe ts coaching, farming together By Danna Sabolik

ARLINGTON, Minn. – Dean Riebe describes himself as a basketball junkie. While Riebe loves this way of life milking 65 cows on his dairy near Arlington, Minn., he also loves the sport of basketball and sharing his passion about the sport with others. Riebe’s coaching career began with his daughter’s seventh-grade basketball team in 2009 at the parochial school in Arlington, Minn. He led that team to a rst-place nish during an end-of-the-season tournament at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn. He coached that team the next year with the same winning result at the year-end tournament. When his daughter moved on to high school in 2011, he retired his coaching whistle until 2013 when the school’s principal and athletic director, Eric Kaesermann, asked him to continue with the program. “At rst I thought it was kind of weird,” Riebe said. “Usually the coach is a parent, and I didn’t have any kids in school anymore.” That year, the school of

about 45 students did not have enough girls to form a seventh-grade team, so he helped coach the third and fourth graders on a combined team. “I started with that little group of kids, and I’ll never forget our rst game,” Riebe said. “Half of them couldn’t get the ball to the rim. I didn’t know what I was in for.” While the girls came in not knowing much about the game, he quickly formed the team into a powerhouse. Going up against big schools and older teams, the six-girl group took on New Ulm’s fth graders and only lost by 15 points. “We’ve never been blown out,” Riebe said. The next year they won a few games, and by the following season they were playing teams their own age and winning handily. Riebe decided to put them in the tournament for seventh and eighth graders. “I put them in, and they got their lumps,” Riebe said. “But, last year we did really good, and this year we haven’t lost a game yet.” Today, Riebe has six girls on his team, three eighth graders, two seventh graders and a

But I’m not easy on them. I’ll never forget in third and fourth grade, a grandpar-

ent asked their granddaughter how they liked me as a coach and she said, ‘Well, he’s OK, but boy does he have a big voice.’” Riebe calls his coaching style old school basketball. “I play pressure defense, and we don’t need a lot of big

when they took the ball inbounds they just dribbled it in. I had to teach them everything.” Riebe believes in being stern but also keeps the game lighthearted, fostering a love for the sport. When his daughters, Vicki and Hayley, are around, they help him coach. They focus on fundamentals

and conditioning, because there are so few girls on the team. They are also working on their mental game this year. “I tell them to play smart and limit turnovers,” Riebe said. “They do and it works. Basketball isn’t rocket science.” Coaching also keeps Riebe involved in the community and offers a distraction from farm life. When he began in 2009, it was a tough year for dairy farmers. “I can forget about the bad stuff on the farm, and it just helps me feel better,” Riebe said. “It just reinvigorates me.” When it comes to balancing farm responsibilities, Riebe is grateful to have the support of his family and also a hired hand to help with relief milking if needed. For the most part, games and practices do not interfere with chores, but in a case where it does, his wife, Deedee, and daughters are there to pitch in. “I love it,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll ever stop doing it. When we don’t have enough for a girls team I’ll help with the co-ed teams.”

Counties seek dairy princess candidates Dubuque County Dairy Association seeks contestants The Dubuque County Dairy Association is seeking contestants to serve as Dairy Princess, Little Miss Dairy Maid, and Prince Farming for the upcoming year! The Dairy Princess Competition is open to young women between the ages of 16 and 21. The competition for Little Miss Dairy Maid and Prince Farming is open to children between the ages of 6 and 9. Get to know Matthew Fischer of Owen, Wis.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I’m a member of the Owen-Withee FFA Chapter, where I am serving as the 2018-19 president and was chapter reporter last year. I have been showing dairy cattle at the Clark County Fair since I was 10, and four years ago I started to show with the Clark County Dairy group at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, Wis. I’m also involved with my local Junior Holstein Group, the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association, PDPW youth programs and 4-H.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? They have tools that can help me become a strong leader now and in the future. They are a great way for me and other young leaders that have a passion for agriculture to be able to come together and network to create a brighter future for ourselves and the agriculture industry. My favorite is the FFA, because I’ve learned about leadership and agriculture, and had lifechanging experiences. I’ve gotten to go place I only imagined I’d ever get to go. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. When I got to go to Washington, D.C., for the FFA Washington Leadership Conference. I learned about personal growth while meeting people from all around the country and from different walks of life, and learned about our nation’s capital and the history told by the monuments. What’s your favorite social media? Facebook has allowed me to share my agriculture story and share positive agriculture posts about our industry in a time of misunderstanding about what we do. It’s also a great way to be part of groups where you can communicate about topics of concern in the dairy industry. It’s also a great way to network with friends. What are your career aspirations? I intend to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, majoring in dairy sciences. I plan to come back to the family farm, eventually take over and raise my family there, so generations to come will be able to experience the benets of living on the farm – the same way it has beneted me growing up. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? I’ve learned public speaking, how to advocate for agriculture, how to speak to the consumers, how to be a stronger leader, how to work with others and other valuable life skills. The most important thing I’ve learned from these organizations is to push myself to the next step, not be afraid to put myself out in the world and show what I have to offer. Who do you look up to? My parents. They inspire me to be the person I am today. They work every day at a job they love even though the times are tough.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. My favorite is feeding and working with the calves. I also milk, feed cows on occasion and do eld work during planting and harvesting seasons. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would love to have more consumers from urban areas visit the farm. I’d like them to see what we are all about and be able to show them what we do and who we are. I want to be able to continue the farming legacy with the consumer understanding what we do.

What’s your favorite and least favorite chores? My favorite is probably feeding calves or scraping. My least favorite is doing stalls or feeding calves when it’s -20 degrees. Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? Beef calves because they are nice and black. What’s your favorite subject in school? History. What’s something you’ve learned in school lately? Ination prices of products that were sold in the early 1900s. What do you want to be when you grow up? A farmer or hoof trimmer. If you had your own farm, what would it look like? I would have pigs, sheep, chickens, beef and dairy cows, and John Deere tractors. What is your favorite dairy treat? Ice cream. What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the winter? Snowmobiling or ice hockey.

My favorite chore is dipping, because it is quick and easy. My least favorite is doing the rags, because you have to get all the dirty rags, haul them to the washer, then get the clean rags out of the dryer. Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? I don’t have a favorite animal. What’s your favorite subject in school? Spelling, because you can learn words that you didn’t know. What’s something you’ve learned in school lately? Long division. What do you want to be when you grow up? A farmer. If you had your own farm, what would it look like? The same as this one. What is your favorite dairy treat? Milk. What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the winter? Ice skating on the pond.

Zale Fraki 9 years old Fourth grade When do you do chores, and what chores do you do? I milk 3-4 nights a week and help feed calves when I’m not milking. What’s your favorite and least favorite chores? My least favorite is milking, because it takes so long. My favorite is when I get to help my dad feed cows because I get to drive the tractor. Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? I don’t have a favorite animal. What’s your favorite subject in school? Writing in my journal, because I like writing Bible verses. What’s something you’ve learned in school lately? Learning about the California gold rush. What do you want to be when you grow up? I don’t know. If you had your own farm, what would it look like? A big barn with 17 milkers, some green tractors and 200 cows. What is your favorite dairy treat? Milk. What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the winter? Drive the snowmobile.
