You really need to listen to your body – I was in denial,” Ken said. “I told her ‘Let’s just sit down for a bit and it’ll go away’ and it kind of did. I went to bed. The next morning, her persistence did pay off and we nally went in.” Tuesday morning, Brenda called his regular doctor at the clinic in Alexandria, Minn., and they were told to go to the ER. An electrocardiogram was done and within minutes it was clear he was having a full-blown heart attack. “We’re gonna get you hooked up to the monitors, the helicopter’s been called and you’re getting air lifted to St. Cloud,” the doctor said. “I was literally in and out of there in 12 minutes. It was quick,” Ken said. “It’s just that moment of shock then,” Brenda said. “I had even thought, ‘but he walked in here.’” “They asked before takeoff if I’d ever been in a chopper ride and I told ‘em for our 25th anniversary we went to Hawaii and for 200 bucks we got to see waterfalls, lush green mountains and a tropical rainforest,” Ken said. “He replied, ‘you’re gonna be a little disappointed, but we will save your life.’” Brenda was told it wouldn’t pay for her to speed as she drove to St. Cloud, Minn. “They told me, ‘We’ll get him down there, get him in the cath lab and he’ll be done by the time you get there,’” she said. “I was barely 12 miles down the interstate and they

called and said they had him there.” By the time Brenda reached St. Cloud, Ken was out of surgery, with one stent in an artery that was 95 percent blocked and a balloon in one that was 55 percent blocked. “Brenda had to ll up with gas in Alex and by the time she got there I was almost to my room – they are so fast,” Ken said. “I thought, ‘Am I dreaming? Is this really happening?’” After spending two-and-a-half days in the hospital, Ken is home and in cardiac rehab. The two are now complete with corn harvest. “All we had left was one eld. My goal was to get the corn out by Christmas. In a normal year it wouldn’t be like that, but after going through all

of this, that’s a pretty good goal,” Ken said. They had offers of help but, like Ken said, the two are stubborn. “Brenda and I both work on our crop getting it in and out equally, together,” he said. They farm around 500 acres, with about 300 acres in corn this year. They dairy farmed for many years, and sold the cows in 2010. Ken has thought a lot about farmers since his heart attack. He has been with groups of farmers many times over the years and said he never once heard anyone talk about health. “You’re very reective when you’re in the helicopter ying and leaving that hospital and going to another one. Some people have asked me, “what do you think about?’” he said. “The last thing you think of is the corn that’s still out in the eld. I never gave it a thought until I was starting to feel better. It was on my mind while I was in the hospital but I was like, it can wait. It’ll still be there when I get better.” If there’s one message he would like to share with other farmers, it is to take care of themselves. “Farmers put off health issues. They are busy, but I would encourage them not to procrastinate too long. The timing of a health issue doesn’t care if the cows are out or the corn is in the eld. You’ve gotta deal with the health issue rst. You’re no good to your loved ones if you’re not around. Be proactive with your health,” Ken said. Ken knows he waited too long, and is very grateful to be making what he considers to be a full recovery. He looks back on the care he received and couldn’t be happier about it. From the doctors to the nurses, they consider the healthcare to have been excellent, from actual treatment to the education given to the couple following the event. Both were very impressed. Ken is taking his cardiac rehab seriously, as well as strict adherence to a better diet and exercise. He is appreciating things that matter. Brenda said the whole situation had scared them straight. She said, “I told him, ‘You scared me to death and I’m gonna give you a chance to make this up to me.’”

Milking routine, cow comfort affect SCC Developing, implementing consistent protocols benets producers By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com

WITHEE, Wis. – Milking every cow, every quarter the same at every milking has a great impact on milk quality, low somatic cell counts and udder health. That was the message presented by Taylor County Ag Agent Sandy Stuttgen, DVM, Marathon County Ag Agent Heather Schlesser and Brian Kaslow of Zoetis at a dairy management meeting held Dec. 13 by UW-Extension personnel and hosted by Five Star Supply near Withee, Wis. Stuttgen advocated that producers develop written standard operating procedures (SOP) that include pre- and post-milking tasks so anyone milking their cows is aware of the normal routine the cows are used to, and to stress the importance of this to all milking technicians. “Consistency really impacts quality,” Stuttgen said. “Having them written down organizes the conversation and gives you something to refer back to when questions and concerns arise. It’s important that everyone understand why these procedures matter.” The ultimate goals producers should be looking for when completing their own SOPs are to ensure cows are being handled in order to produce a rapid, gentle and hygienic harvest

of milk; that abnormal milk is being identied and treated; and to achieve the optimal efciency of the milking machines. Essential milking protocol should include technicians wearing gloves and keeping them clean or changing them when needed in order to help reduce the spread of mastitis pathogens from cow to cow during milking. Pre-dipping reduces the number of environmental bacteria present on the teats. There are a variety of pre-dip products available including washes, foams, sprays and dips. “Coverage is key,” Stuttgen said. “If you chose a spray, be sure to choose one that sprays straight up so the end of the teat is coated. Be sure to read labels and store the product correctly. Look for products that have research data available. If you are seeing an increase in the number of cases of clinical mastitis, you need to rethink your predip.” Prior to applying the pre-dip any obvious contaminants should be removed from the teat. In order to be fully effective, pre-dip needs to remain on the skin for at least 30 seconds. Leftover dips should be discarded after each milking to maintain the efcacy of the dip. “The goal of pre-dip is kill any organisms and remove them by wiping them away,” Stuttgen said. The next step in a successful milking routine is forestripping, which is the only method to detect clinical mastitis. Stuttgen advises producers milking in tiestall barns to employ a strip cup and to never forestrip into the oor of the stall.

Taylor County Agriculture Educator Sandy Stu�gen, DVM, spoke to dairy farmers about how milking procedures and rou�ne can aﬀect milk quality and udder health Dec. 13 at Five Star Supply near Withee, Wis. Teats need to be adequately dried following preparation in order to achieve the best hygiene. One study determined that herds that ensured teats were dried had a SCC 44,000 cell/ ml lower than herds that did not. Teats should be wiped aggressively, with special attention paid to drying the teat end. Only one cow should be wiped with each towel. Attachment of the milking machine needs to occur 1 to 2 minutes after stimulation to coordinate with optimum

milk letdown. Studies have shown that the time the machine is on the cow is reduced when cows are milked at the peak of their letdown. Units should be coming off the cows in ve to six minutes. Machines left on longer cause damage to teat ends. Milking units need to be properly aligned to the cow to minimize leakage of air into the milking system. had in a while, with 500-600 lb. steer calves in Iowa selling at $173.73 per hundredweight (cwt.) at the end of the year. While those prices aren’t as strong as the average between 2013 and 2015 at around $220/cwt., last year was still better than 2016, which nished out the year under $160/cwt. for steer calves in that 500-600 lb. range. Slaughter steer prices in both Iowa and Minnesota followed similar trends, with 2017 prices actually eclipsing the 2013-15 average in May before dipping back down in June and July and nishing out the year at $119.85/cwt. However, estimated returns in nishing yearling steers in Iowa don’t look as rosy for 2018 as they did last year, ranging from a loss of $135 to a prot of $49 per head in 2018, compared to a loss of $74 to a prot of $415 per head in 2017. “The second half of 2018 does look a bit weaker,” Hart said.

As he switched gears from beef to hogs, Hart said that 2018 may be better than 2017 for pork despite more difculty selling pork around the holidays this year. Daily CME lean hog futures at the time of the presentation were peaking in June at $83.75/cwt. “We are seeing strong futures prices for farrowto-nish and wean-to-nish hogs, as well,” Hart said. Pork processing in the United States is growing and Hart estimated that in the next three to ve years, ve more pork processing plants will be up and running in Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota and Iowa. The exploding popularity of bacon, which can now be found as avors in vodka and ice cream, certainly hasn’t hurt the pork industry. “The pork industry gured out that ‘The Other White Meat’ campaign and trying to compete with beef for the middle of the plate wasn’t working, so they started competing for space around the plate and that is working better, especially with bacon,” Hart said. “Pork belly products are big movers right now.” As with all things in farming, all forecasts are subject to change with weather and shifts in domestic and foreign demand. “Prices are always lowest right before harvest. There were opportunities in 2017 to market a crop protably, and the same will go for 2018. However, it still looks like 2018 will be a tougher year for crop farmers,” Hart said.

Somatic cells are white blood cells which are present in the cow to help ght infection. SCC is not affected by the cow’s breed, milk yield, stage of lactation, nutritional management or other diseases. SCC is affected by exposure of teats to bacteria that cause mastitis. “All abnormalities in milk are caused by an immune response, not the actual bacterial infection,” Schlesser said. “The threshold for subclinical mastitis is 200,000. At that level, a cow’s production decreases about 3 pounds. For every doubling of SCC, another three pounds of production is lost.” Schlesser cautions producers against looking at bulk-tank SCC counts to determine the udder health of their

The goal of postdipping is for at least 75 percent of the skin to be covered on at least 90 percent of the teats. Farms can chose to employ a territorial milking routine or a sequential routine. A territorial routine means that one milking technician is doing all of the procedures, using groups of four to 12 units. Timing is more uniform in territorial milking routines and less coordination is required between workers. Tasks are divided between two technicians in sequential routines. The rst worker completes the pre-dipping and forestripping processes. The second person waits one to two minutes to dry the teats and attach the units. While a sequential milking routine can be faster than a territorial routine, it is more difcult to maintain consistency in the timing between the two milking technicians. herd, explaining that individual SCC values are required for solving mastitis issues in the herd, and individual quarter SCC helps further detect problems. “In a group of ve cows that all have a 400,000 SCC, the average tank score is 400,000. If that group had four cows with 100,000 SCC and one with a 1.6 million SCC, the average tank score would also be 400,000,” Schlesser said, noting that a SCC over 200,000 indicates some type of injury or inammation in the udder, including mastitis. Controlling mastitis involves eliminating existing cases and preventing new cases of infection. Contagious mastitis pathogens are transmitted from cow to cow through improper milking procedures and sanitation, and can also be spread by ies and by sucking. Environmental mastitis is acquired from the environment through manure, water and bedding. Maintaining a clean environment keeps cows clean, which decreases exposure to environmental pathogens. “The top two reasons cows are culled from herds are for reproductive problems and for mastitis,” said Kaslow. “Mastitis accounts for 16 percent of all adult cow deaths. Preventing mastitis is a key to keeping mature cows in the herd. Mature cows are more protable than replacement heifers. Having proper protocols is a necessity.” Kaslow explained the Cow Comfort Quotient (CCQ) to producers. The CCQ is the ration of cows lying properly in their stalls to the total number of cows in stalls. At least 80 percent of cows should be laying down, and cows should be spending at least 12 to 14 hours per day laying down. Cow comfort can also be judged by scoring hocks for lesions. “Hygiene scoring makes an enormous difference in reducing SCC,” Kaslow said, explaining the rating system for cow cleanliness by assessing how clean they are throughout the regions of their tailhead, belly and udder, and thighs and lower legs. “Hygiene scoring is driven by bedding and stall maintenance.” Controlling mastitis and lowering SCC go hand in hand with developing and implementing proper milking routines and procedures and maintaining cow comfort and a clean environment. Reducing bacteria loads and keeping bacteria out of the mammary gland are paramount to achieving goals of lowered SCC and mastitis problems.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in dairy judging for FFA and 4-H. I also show dairy cattle for 4-H and at the state fair. Last year, our FFA dairy judging team took rst place in the state competition and won the bronze award at the national level. I also won a bronze in the national FFA dairy judging competition. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I grew up on a dairy farm and enjoy working with our animals and connecting with them. My favorite part is showing dairy cattle. There’s always a big rush when you step into the showring, knowing that you worked all summer long for this moment. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/ organizations. Going to the state fair and competing against others from across the state. You get to know your competitors, but you also help one another. Showing dairy cattle at the fair feels like belonging to one big family. What’s your favorite social media? Snapchat because it lets you stay in touch with people near and far and see what’s going on in their lives. I went to World Dairy Expo last fall and

I have also learned that everyone has bad days and you shouldn’t judge something based on one bad experience. Who do you look up to? I look up to Dad, who had to take over our dairy farm after Grandpa suddenly passed away a couple of years ago. Dad always does what he believes is right and never gives up without a ght. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I like horses. And, when I’m driving in my car, I like to sing along to songs by Garth Brooks and Hank Williams, Jr. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I help feed the cattle, take care of the baby calves and help with milking. I help pull calves, give vaccinations and drive tractors during the eld work season.

Applications being accepted for MARL Class X Applications are now being accepted for the Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership (MARL) Class X. MARL is a dynamic two-year educational experience featuring nine three-day in-state seminars, a six-day national study seminar and a 10- to 14-day international study seminar. Its mission is to develop the skills of Minnesota’s agricultural and rural leaders so they may maximize their impact and effectiveness in local, state, national and international arenas. The MARL curriculum is designed to have immediate applicability for active leaders. Each session features a mix of leadership study, personal skill-building, and location-related subject matter. A majority of each class’ makeup is agricultural producers, and others are professionals involved in rural, ag-related business. The seminar calendar is designed to accommodate the busy schedules of participants. Most of the activities occur over the winter months. “The MARL program is heading into its 10th class and people are starting to become familiar with what the program is about. We want to encourage participation from all areas of Minnesota. The state is large and there are very diverse types of agriculture in different regions,” she said. Most farmers get a bill, not a check, with crop insurance We all carry insurance on something: Our homes, our cars, maybe even a special vacation or a treasured antique. And, we all get bills in the mail to pay premiums on those insurance policies. When disaster strikes, and we have to use the policies we’ve paid for, we must rst absorb part of the loss as a deductible before aid is received. Farmers are no different, despite what farm policy critics might have you believe. As with any line of insurance, farmers receive crop insurance payments only when there are veried losses and only after shouldering a chunk of those losses themselves through deductibles. More often than not, farmers pay into the crop insurance system and don’t get indemnities at all. That’s why it’s often said with crop insurance, farmers get a bill not a check. policies between 2015 and 2016. Of those, there were 563,506 claims, meaning 1,800,832 policies were not triggered. In fact, if we look further, we nd that farmers spent $7.2 billion out of their own pockets for insurance protection in 2015 and 2016. They also shouldered $13.6 billion in losses as part of deductibles. Indemnities totaled $10.2 billion, meaning farmers collectively put much more into the system than they got out. This trend appears to have continued in 2017, too. In other words, a bill, not a check. Exactly like insurance is supposed to work. But farmers are not complaining about helping fund their own farm policy. Crop insurance is not about making money. It’s about managing risk and paying into a safety net that kicks in when the worst happens so farmers can recover and continue to provide safe and affordable food for U.S. customers. Farmers are happy to pay that bill. This is an increase of eight percent or 52,357 over the previous record set in 2016. Registrations totaled 384,181 head, up 6,876 from 2016. Additionally, there were 358,729 animals identied through the Association’s Basic ID program, an increase of 45,481. The Basic ID program is a stepping stone to full registry status. The popularity of the Holstein breed continues to escalate. Holstein Association USA CEO John M. Meyer states, “Dairy cattle breeders appreciate the superiority of Holstein genetics, and that there are more Holstein bulls to select from than bulls of all other dairy breeds combined. The continual outstanding growth of the Holstein breed speaks to the economic advantage dairies across the country receive by producing Holstein milk.” Culver’s Thank You Farmers® project surpasses $1.7 million in donations to help feed the growing population With the global population expected to increase from 7.6 to 9.8 billion by 2050, the world needs to rise to the challenge of feeding 29 percent more people using the same amount of land and water that we have today. Those responsible for guring out how to sustainably feed our growing population are likely currently sitting in classrooms, playing on playgrounds or yet to be born. The bottom line: Our youth are our future. That’s why Culver’s Thank You Farmers® Project was created to make sure we have enough wholesome food to serve our growing population by supporting agricultural education programs that encourage smart farming. People in the dairy community James Larsen, 82, passes James Robert Larsen passed away on Jan. 4 at Rochester Methodist Hospital at the age of 82 years old after a battle with cancer. He crop farmed and was in a dairy partnership with his son, Lance, on their farm near Oronoco, Minn. He served on the Rock Dell Creamery Board, DHIA Board and the Pine Island Elevator Board through its merger to Farm Country Coop. He was the rst secretary for the Olmsted County Corn Growers Association. He and his wife, Judy, were Olmsted County Farm Family of the year in 1994. In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Lance (Debra) Larsen of Oronoco, Jo (Steve) Raechke of Ellsworth, Wis., Lydia (Robert) Gammell of Rochester, Minn., Chuck (Karla) Larsen of Byron, Minn., Greg (Amy) Larsen of Byron, Minn., and Carrie (Mark) Ostman of Rochester, Minn., 23 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, sister Ardith (Don) Ottman of Oronoco, one niece, one nephew, foster brother Jerry (Sandy) Clausen of Rochester and sister-in-law Kathy (Ken) Betzold of Farmington, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Scott, a granddaughter, two brother-inlaws and one sister-in-law. Progressive Breeders’ Registry honors top registered Holstein® herds The Progressive Breeders’ Registry (PBR), established in 1937, recognizes top Registered Holstein® homebred herds based on elite milk production and classication scores. The Association’s longest running award honors over 200 breeders annually. To qualify for the PBR award, a herd must be a member of both their national and state associations, enrolled in the Deluxe or Premier TriStarSM options, and participate in a classication option which provides a BAA (Breed Age Average). The herd’s BAA must be in the top 25 percent of herds classied in the 18 months prior to March 1 of the award year. Herds must have at least 20 cows which are 87% RHA or higher and at least 75 percent of the herd must be homebred. Herds must exceed award-year production level cut-offs, which are based on the Mature Equivalent (ME) for combined fat and protein, and cut-offs are adjusted for each state based on the ME herd averages for that state, to compensate for regional differences in production levels.
