Ken’s Comments by Ken Raney We l c o m e to Spring 2017, we have had an unusual winter, with some record high temperatures and some very cold days as well. We look forward to Spring that will bring renewed life and vigor to the world. Our outstanding Youth program is featured in this issue of Profiles. Throughout this issue, you will see the accomplishments and recognitions earned by our Junior members for their hard work and dedication during the past year. We want to thank the many sponsors who made it possible for all the pictures to be presented in this issue. We also want to thank the leaders, advisors and parents who support and encourage our Youth to participate and succeed, our Youth programs would not be possible without your guidance and enthusiasm. The Juniors are in the midst of their fund-raising activities to support our state programs: we had a Fun Auction at the Adult Convention which raised over $4,200. We want to thank the 31 donors and buyers who were so generous with this support. The youth are also working on our annual Calf Raffle, this year the calf is donated by Scarlett Summer Holsteins, Muncy, PA. The winning ticket this year will be drawn at the Eastern Elite Sale in September in Harrisburg. Opportunities are available to purchase tickets to support our youth programs. The Northeast District members were excellent hosts for our 2017 Conventions. The hospitality and friendly atmosphere that was evident at both conventions made all feel welcome. We appreciate the work of all the members who helped plan and conduct both conventions in Scranton. A special thanks to all the Sponsors, Commercial Exhibitors and Donors who helped make the programs a success. a number of herd dispersals. If you need that special show heifer or just need to add a good bred heifer or fresh young cow, please consider supporting any of these Spring Sales. Many of county sales use the profits from the sale to subsidize other local Association activities. It is also an excellent time to visit with many of your neighbors and friends, take advantage of the many opportunities that Registered Cattle give you and enjoy a day at a sale. As a reminder, when you are buying animals for a youth member to show, make sure to get them transferred before June 1st. Animals must be in the Junior members name and processed by Holstein USA before June 1 for all cows and heifers to be eligible for youth recognition. Pennsylvania Holstein continues to actively market cattle through private treaty sales, so please keep David Lentz informed of your marketing needs. Umble “Udderings” - Ken Umble PA Holstein President I had the privilege of spending a couple of weekends in the “Electric City” of Scranton this past month as the junior and adult Holstein conventions were convened. I used the opportunity to introduce my 9 year old grandson Grant, to the fun and excitement of the youth activities and what an electrifying time it was. During the time that I was honored to assist in the DJM interview competition, a very gracious and selfless “Grammy”, Beth Raney, took Grant under her wing and got him settled in to watch the junior jeopardy contests. Thanks, Beth! I was amazed at the amount of knowledge and expertise these kids displayed thru their posters,
speeches, interviews, photos, and dairy bowl and jeopardy competition. We can take pride in knowing that PA will be well represented in Washington at the national convention this summer! Hopefully next February there will be a group of Chester county youth involved in those contests as the 2018 Pa State Convention is scheduled at the nearby Lancaster County Convention Center. It was also great to see little Reese Burdette taking in all the activities and not missing a moment of it! Three weeks later the adults enjoyed a great time put on by the northeast district folks. Thanks to John Wetmore and others who pulled off a couple of very interesting host day tours, banquets and of course a fantastic dairy bar! These fun events don’t just happen on their own but need lots of volunteers to help plan and run them. Please, when you are asked to help on a
committee, could we all sacrifice a few hours of our time to contribute toward these worthwhile functions? Many hands make work light! We were also privileged to be able to be a part of the National Holstein USA meeting and hear comments and discussion from CEO Meyer and the rest of the team. Vice President Boyd Schaufleberger graciously emceed the hall of fame banquet and concluded it with a poem (see page 48) written by his daughter Amy (soon to be Mrs. Brad Hoover) titled “These Cows”. What an awesome way to end an enjoyable weekend because it was because of “these cows” that we were drawn to Scranton. Not only because of their accomplishments but also because of the people involved with them. Marilyn and I truly have made and continue to make incredible friends in this industry and it’s because of “these cows”. Yes it does take time and extra resources to get away to these functions but it is worth it and more for the encouragement and support that is felt from friends who know many of your same trials and struggles. Join us next year and I promise you won’t be disappointed. - Ken Umble

Pennsylvania Junior Holstein “PAL” of the Year The “PAL” Award is to recognize an adult leader, parent or friend who is always there for the youth program. The “PAL” Award is designed to thank an individual for their leadership, influence, and help in developing an outstanding youth program. Nominations for the Dale Oliver (left) being presented the award come from JuPAL Award by Daniel Kitchen nior Holstein members and the final selection of the winner is done by the Junior Executive Committee. This year’s recipient of the “PAL” award is Dale Olver, State College, PA. Dale was active in Pennsylvania Junior Holstein programs as a Junior member from Wayne County. Dale was a Pennsylvania Junior Distinguished Junior Member, the first year of the Junior Division Contest in 1971. Dale went on to Penn State University where he served as President of the Dairy Science Club. He graduated from Penn State in 1979 in Dairy Production and went to work for Atlantic Breeders Cooperative. In 1989 Dale joined the faculty of Penn State where he teaches Animal Science classes, Dairy Judging and Linear Evaluation, he is involved with student recruitment and is an advisor for the Penn State Dairy Science Club. He is the Penn State Dairy Judging Coach, oversees the Pennsylvania 4-H Dairy Program and manages the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show program. Dale served as a youth advisor and Dairy Bowl coach in Lancaster County. He coached the 1989 National winning team. Dale has helped many young people with their DJM books, giving advice and ideas as they compete for national recognition. Dale has worked with Pennsylvania Junior Holstein for many years on our state Dairy Bowl Contest. He helps to finalize the questions, recruit’s students to help manage the contest and also helps secure judges each year. He also has undertaken the task of working with students to develop the state Dairy Jeopardy contest as well. Other dairy breeds have taken notice of the work Dale has done, they have also had Dale and the Penn State Dairy Science Club assist with some of their state and national contests over the years. Dale has been recognized for his work with students both by Penn State and nationally. He has received the ADSA Outstanding Advisor Award, was the first Hoard’s Dairyman Youth Development Award Winner, ADSA Land O’Lakes Purina Teaching Award and from Penn State he has been honored with the Shellenberger Award and the George Atherton Award. Dale has an excellent way of inspiring young people to reach beyond their limits. He is an encourager, making sure everyone feels important and needed. He wants to see young
people participate in youth activities of all descriptions. Dale knows that the youth we work with and encourage today will be the leaders of tomorrow and his time and effort are greatly appreciated by many Junior members. The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association is pleased to recognize Dale Olver as our 2017 “PAL” Award winner. We want to thank Dale for his tireless efforts on behalf of the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein membership.

The Pennsylvania Holstein Association is pleased to recognize six young people as finalists in the 2017 Intermediate Division of the Distinguished Junior Member Contest. The finalists completed scrapbooks listing their accomplishments in Holstein activities, schoolwork, and community involvement and leadership positions. Caleb McGee, son of Brian & Becky McGee and Brooke Kline, daughter of Barb Kline were recognized as winners at the Awards Program. Caleb and Brooke will have their books submitted for the National Young Member Contest sponsored by Holstein USA Inc. The contest will be held during the National Convention in Washington in June.
The Pennsylvania Holstein Association is pleased to recognize four outstanding individuals as finalists in the Senior Division of the Distinguished Junior Member Contest. The four finalists each completed a scrapbook listing their accomplishments in Holstein activities, schoolwork, community involvement, leadership and their ideas of the future in agriculture and the Holstein industry along with a completed resume and a video presentation highlighting their ideas on the future of the dairy industry and how our industry can better relate to our consumers. The winners announced were Douglas Boop son of Doug & Jennifer Boop and Laura Lesher daughter of William & Lolly Lesher. These two outstanding young people will represent Pennsylvania in the National Distinguished Junior Member Contest to be held in June at the National Holstein Convention in Washington. Each of the winners as well as all the finalists are to be congratulated on a job well done.

PA Junior Holstein Association Awards Junior Progressive Breeder Award The Junior Progressive Breeder Award is to recognize breeders/owners of Registered Holsteins who meet the following standards and criteria: Juniors qualify on a single animal will receive 1 star, on two animals 2 stars, three animals 3 stars, four animals 4 stars, and juniors qualifying on five individual animals will automatically be designated a Pennsylvania Junior Progressive Breeder. Junior members may accumulate their stars over the period of their junior membership. PA Junior Holstein Association Awards PENNSYLVANIA HOLSTEIN YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP The Pennsylvania Holstein Youth Scholarship Organization is pleased to recognize three individuals for their work with Holsteins, community involvement, school activities and leadership abilities. Each of these young people was a recipient of a Pennsylvania Holstein Youth Scholarship. The scholarship is a $1,500 award to be used by each winner to better themselves through a post-secondary educational program.

The 2017 winners include: Douglas Boop, Millmont, Union County. Doug is the son of Doug & Jennifer Boop and he is attending Penn State University majoring in Animal Sciences. Nicole Guise, Spring Grove, York County. Nicole is the daughter of Denton & Amy Guise and she has been accepted at Cornell University and Penn State University. She plans to major in Agricultural Sciences with concentrations in dairy and education. Laura Lesher, Bernville, Berks County. Laura is the daughter of William & Lolly Lesher and she is attending Penn State University majoring in Animal Science with a minor in Agribusiness Management.
Each of these young people has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their chosen fields of study and work. The scholarship fund comes from monies donated to a scholarship fund set up through the Pennsylvania Holstein Youth Scholarship Organization. The Scholarship Program began in 1989 and since that time we have presented including this year 106 individual scholarships worth $104,250. The Pennsylvania Holstein Youth Scholarship Organization is proud to recognize the achievements of these Junior Holstein members and we trust they will have continued success in the future.
DAIRY PRODUCTION VIDEO CONTEST This contest is designed to present and promote the dairy industry to the general public. A maximum of a 2 minute video presenting the dairy industry in a realistic and positive light. The contest can be done by an individual or by a group. There will be two (2) age divisions: Junior – must not have reached their 15th birthday by January 1 Senior – must not have reached their 21st birthday by January 1. The winning video(s) will be shown at the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Convention. The video a unique opportunity to showcase the dairy industry in a positive and realistic light to the public who does not fully understand everything involved in producing quality dairy products. In the end, it is about having fun and letting your passion for dairy industry shine through. There was one video submitted for the 2017 Contest. The Tioga County Junior Holstein Association received a gift certificate for their outstanding promotional video.

ART CONTEST WINNER
The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association sponsors an Ad Design Contest for its members who wish to develop their own advertising program to promote their farm, cattle and/or activities. There are two age divisions and the winner in each division will have their advertisement placed in the Pennsylvania Holstein Profiles magazine. There were 6 entries submitted in the Senior Division and 8 advertisements to judge in the Junior Division at the 2017 Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Convention.
The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association sponsors an Art Contest for its members who wish to use their artistic ability. There are two categories of art work: sketch or painting and 3-D Designs or Sculptures, all art must be farm and agricultural related. This year there were seventeen (17) entries turned in for competition.

PA Junior Holstein Association Awards DAIRY JEOPARDY WINNERS The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association sponsored and conducted our 13th Annual Dairy Jeopardy contest during the Junior Convention in Scranton. The contest, modeled after the popular TV game show, featured dairy industry and Holstein related category topics. The contest has three age divisions with 45 contestants in this year’s contest. The top placing individuals will have the opportunity to represent Pennsylvania at the National Dairy Jeopardy Contest to be held during the National Junior Holstein Convention in Bellevue, Washington in June. PA Junior Holstein Association Awards EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association held its 17th Annual Extemporaneous Speech Contest during the 2017 Junior Holstein Convention in Scranton. PA Junior Holstein Association Awards DAIRY BOWL contest WINNERS The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Dairy Bowl contest was held during the 2017 Junior Holstein Convention at the Hilton Scranton Conference Center, Scranton, PA. There were 36 teams that competed in two age divisions, 28 Junior Division teams and 8 Senior Division teams. The Penn State Dairy Science Club coordinates, writes the contest questions, and supplies the volunteer help to run the contest. We also have volunteer judges from Penn State University and the Dairy industry who gladly assist with our contest each year. Without the help and support of these fine groups and individuals it would be nearly impossible to run a contest involving 36 teams with over 180 individuals. Perry County and Lancaster County will represent Pennsylvania in the National Holstein Dairy Bowl Contest to be held during the National Holstein Convention in Bellevue, Washington in June.

ON THE STREET INTERVIEW CONTEST The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association conducted their 5th Annual “On the Street Interview Contest”. The contest allows Junior Holstein members to develop skills that they can use when approached by visitors or media at fairs, shows, and promotional activities. The contestants were asked a question in media fashion and they had up to one (1) minute to answer the question on camera. The contestants were judged on clarity of their answer, knowledge of the subject and poise in front of the camera. The contest was divided into three age groups, with a total of 82 participants in the contest. The winning videos in each category were shown during the Awards Program. Congratulations to all who participated in our 5th Annual contest, Pennsylvania Junior Holstein is excited to continue and expand this contest in the years to come.

PA Junior Holstein Association Awards RADIO PROMOTION ADVERTISING CONTEST The Radio Promotion contest is designed to present and promote the dairy industry to the general public. Radio spots should be 30 seconds in length and may include a musical or sound effect introduction and/or background, but may not include a spoken introduction or “tag” by someone other than the contestant. The radio spot should promote/educate the public on the value of the dairy industry in a realistic and positive light. Musical/sound effect introductions and endings are considered a part of the radio spot and must not cause the 30 second time limit to be exceeded. 2016 Junior All-Pennsylvania Winners The 2016 Junior All-Pennsylvania Show awards were presented to the winning junior members at the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Convention, February 4th, at the Hilton Scranton Conference Center, Scranton, PA. There are 16 classes recognized in the Junior All-Pennsylvania Contest. The contest is based on youth class placings at the PA Holstein Spring Show, youth placings at the PA Holstein Regional Championship Shows and placings at the Premier National Junior Holstein Show and the PA Holstein Fall Championship Show. The contest saw 39 different Juniors receive recognition for their participation in the 2016 contest. Congratulations go out to all these juniors for breeding and/or owning such fine individuals.

These cows. The reason we all had to wait until Dad was done milking to open presents on Christmas morning. Why we had to always rush to make it to functions on time. These cows are the reason we don’t go out much at night but also allow us to spend so much time together as a family. These cows are the reason I built character as I stood at the bottom of the class and the reason for a sense of pride as they stood at the top. These cows are the reason we get up well before dawn but never miss a sunrise. The reason we all have to work long hours every day of the year but never miss a pretty Illinois sunset. These cows are the reason I never have girly hands but it’s a reminder that it takes hard work to be successful. These cows have allowed us to make friends all over the world. They taught me the circle of life and how fragile it is. These cows have shaped my life for the last 26 years. They played a role in so many good memories. These cows give you a sense of purpose that most others don’t ever feel. They have been part of our family. My parents have planned life around these cows. My dad has devoted his passion to these cows. They’re the reason he never gets a nap but the reason he’s been so successful and should be so proud. Here’s to the memories. Obituaries
From the President’s Desk — by Dean Jackson
Ernest L. Wolfe Ernest L. Wolfe, 70 of Wolfe Road, Milton, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017, at the Milton Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born July 23, 1937, in Mazeppa, a son of the late Harry F. and Minnie (Hauck) Wolfe. On July 30, 1955, he married the former Jennie P. Peterman who survives. His passing breaks a marital union of 61 years. Ernest attended school in Montandon. He was a lifelong farmer, farming 1,000 acres at his peak, and he owned E & J Meadows now known as Wolfe’s Power Line Dairy. Ernest and Jennie built E & J Meadows Dairy Store on their own and at one tie he sold Badger Equipment. He was a member of the Holstein Association, the Farm Bureau of America, the Pennsylvania Young Farmers and the Potts Grove Fire Company. He was a past member of the Buffalo Valley Riding Club. Ernest enjoyed hunting, horseback riding, and square dancing. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Dennis (Anna) Wolfe, of Lewisburg, Dean Wolfe, of Virginia, Roger (Brenda) Schorr, of Montandon, and Ray (Lisa) Wolfe, of Milton; one daughter, Kathy Jo (Wayne) Beiber, of Potts Grove; three sisters, Pearl Weaver, of Camp Hill, Isabelle Byrd, of Milton, and Margaret Seybert, of Bloomsburg; 13 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and 13 greatgrandchildren. Ernest was preceded in death by six brothers, Ralph, Robert, Dale, Kenneth, Paul and George Wolfe; and one sister, Gladys Baker. Services were held on Thursday, February 9, 2017 with Rev. Dale Hippensteel officiating. Burial was in the Montandon Cemetery.
