Spring is here…I think? Winter just keeps hanging around. I am looking forward to warmer weather. We have an exciting issue of Profiles for you to enjoy reading. We are celebrating the PA Holstein junior and adult conventions and their accomplishments. It is an encouraging sight to see around 400 Junior Holstein youth participate in many events and contests during the convention. Many hours of hard work took place long before the convention. Thank you parents, leaders and sponsors for all your help and encouragement you give debbie Cornman the youth. Thank you to the South-Central District for hosting great junior and adult conventions at the Lancaster Convention Center, Lancaster, PA. A very special event at the adult convention included a fireside talk about Osborndale Ivanhoe and his history. It was enjoyable learning about Ivanhoe with special guests Harry Roth, Carla Panciera and Alan Bair, with great conversation, history and stories. Thank you to Stump Valley Holsteins, Stone-Haus Holsteins, Brook-Corner Holsteins, Misty-Z Holsteins, Gajan Holsteins, and Martin-Dale Holsteins for opening up your barns to view your wonderful herds. Welcome to Spring 2018, we have had a very different winter weather pattern, but spring hopes eternal, like our Youth, featured in this issue of Profiles. Throughout this issue you will see the accomplishments and recognitions earned by our Junior members for their hard work and dedication during the past year. We want to thank the many sponsors who made it possible for all the pictures to be presented in this issue. We also want to thank the leaders, advisors and parents who support and encourage our Youth to participate and succeed, our Youth programs would not be possible without your guidance and enthusiasm. We would also like to send greetings to our Holstein friends from across the country as you enjoy our Profiles magazine at the 2018 National Convention hosted by our friends in Michigan. We trust you will find our Profiles informative and we hope you will enjoy learning more about our members and their cows through the ads and articles. Pennsylvania Holstein will be hosting the 2020 National Holstein Convention at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, Lancaster, PA from June 22-26, 2020. We would like to invite our friends and Holstein enthusiasts from across the country to mark you calendars for June 2020 and join us in Pennsylvania. The South-Central District members were excellent hosts to our 2018 Conventions. The hospitality and friendly atmosphere that was evident at both conventions made all feel welcome. We appreciate the work of all the members who helped plan and conduct both conventions. The Junior Convention was co-chaired by Mandy Arrowsmith and Amy Savage while the Adult Convention was co-chaired by Marcus & Loretta Martin. If you do not want to show, but want to see great cattle and have an opportunity to visit with friends and neighbors, take a day and go to a show. It will be well worth your time and effort! The All-American Dairy Show will be September 15-20, 2018 in Harrisburg, PA; all are invited to enter and show. Watch the farm press and your e-mail for entry information and deadlines. Our Juniors are in the midst of their fund raising activities to support our state programs: we had a Fun Auction at the Adult Convention which raised over $3,900 thanks to many generous donors and buyers. We are also working on our annual Calf Raffle, this year the calf is donated by Adam & Lisa Sonnen, Millville, PA. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Eastern Elite Sale in September in Harrisburg. Opportunities are available to purchase tickets to support our youth programs. The summer season is always a time of busy farm activities; please take time to attend your county picnic and show, or a regional show or sale. We all need to take time to visit with friends and neighbors; Pennsylvania Holstein activities are an excellent way to do that.

Tim’s Comments - Tim Sturgeon
PA Holstein President Spring is in the air; the birds are chirping, the grass is greening up, the itch of spring planting can be felt. It is a welcome sight after a long cold winter. The beauty of God’s creation is all around us. As I prepare this, here at Camp Run Farms, our farm is probably the same as most of yours. Our youngest son Blane is busy in the shop getting equipment ready. Our middle son Wade is busy as usual working with the cows. Our oldest son Thad, that handles the Pioneer seed business, is in full swing working with customers. The grandchildren are ready and able to help out wherever they can. It will be an extra special spring as our oldest grandchild Seth will be graduating high school. It is hard to believe how fast 18 years can go by. It was such an honor to be elected to serve as president of the association for the next two years. I first served on our Beaver-Lawrence County Holstein board at the age of 19. I would have never guessed 51 years later I would have the privilege to serve as the state president. As I reflect on the last 51 years I am most grateful for the friends and people I have met through the Holstein Association. More importantly, Kathy and I are looking forward to meeting so many more in my term as president. I’d like to give a big thank you to the southeast district for hosting a great convention in the beginning of March. At the convention there were tours that highlighted some great herds in the area. They opened their doors to us; to see there cows and operations. It is always great to see other farms. I’ve never been on a farm tour where I haven’t learned something; something that could be done on our home farm to make it better. There are many things coming up in future months for our association. Pennsylvania will have a strong delegation attending the National Convention at the end of June in Michigan. Also attending will be many of our Jr. Members. Please join me in wishing the best Of luck to our juniors in competition at the convention. They always represent Pennsylvania well. Junior judging school will be held in Butler and Lawrence counties June 25-26th. We are looking forward to being one of the host farms for this year’s judging school. Following in July and August will be our regional Championship Shows. I would like to thank a few people who have agreed to serve as chairman of our state committees. Buck Cessna as show chairman, Scott Umble as sale chairman, Keith Decker as activity chairman and Andrea Stoulzfus as youth chairwoman. fice. Also I need to thank the members of the Executive board for the time they put in. This is a great group of people that I am looking forward to working with. It goes without saying these are very trying times in the Dairy business. It was quite disappointing to be driving home from the convention only to get phone calls of fellow dairyman who have lost their contracts to have there milk processed. Much has been said, meetings have taken place, anger turned to frustration - only to be followed by desperation. We all wish we had the magic wand to make it all better. Unfortunately nobody has that. I have no simple solution. If I could I would like to refer back to something I said earlier. Friendships made over the last 51 years. Maybe now more than ever, the friendships made, are more important than ever. Maybe that visit to a fellow dairyman. A phone call, not to complain about the situation, but to ask how their two year olds look. What calves look good in there calf pens. What bulls they are using. What their preachers sermon was on this past Sunday. I know none of these conversations help pay their feed bill, find a market for there milk, are going to pay for there spring planting, but maybe that 20 minute conversation will help clear their mind to help them make decisions tomorrow. It’s not rocket science, sometimes simple is the best. At times like this I’m reminded of the story of the man who fell down in to a deep pit. A passerby walked past and said, “wait there I will go get the police”. Awhile later another passerby walked by and said, “wait there I will go get the fire department”. Time passed and soon a friend walked by saw his friend down in the pit. He jumped down in the pit with his friend. Surprised at what he had done the man in the pit said, “ why on earth did you do that”? The friend embraced him with a hug and said, “ I’ve been in a pit before to, And I know it’s no fun to be there alone,” We are in this together. I look forward to seeing many of you throughout the spring and summer. - Tim

Pennsylvania Junior Holstein “PAL” of the Year The “PAL” Award is to recognize an adult leader, parent or friend who is always there for the youth program. The “PAL” Award is designed to thank an individual for their leadership, influence, and help in developing an outstanding youth program. Nominations for the award come from JuPAL Award Recipient Beth Raney and Doug Boop, PA Junior nior Holstein memHolstein President bers and the final selection of the winner is done by the Junior Executive Committee. This year’s recipient of the “PAL” award is Beth Raney, State College, PA. Beth was active in Pennsylvania Junior Holstein programs as a Junior member from Clarion County. She graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1981 with a degree in Home Economics Education. She began her 35 ½ year Penn State Extension career as a 4-H and Youth Development Agent in Lawrence County. In 1984 she moved to State College where she worked in the College of Ag Sciences Information and Technology unit. She spent from 2006-2017 with the National Extension Program as Professional Development Leader. Since her retirement in 2016 she is a substitute teacher at the State College Friends School. Beth served as a 4-H leader in Centre County for many years and still helps with programs as requested. She is active in her church, having served as Clerk of Session, sings in the choir and on committees where needed. Beth presently serves on the National Holstein Women’s Scholarship Board of Directors and is chairperson of the Scholarship Selection Committee. She works with the All-American Dairy Show on check-in and clerking shows. Beth is most proud of her family, husband Ken, son
Christopher, his wife Kristen and grandson Collin, along with her daughter Michelle. Beth remains behind the scene within the PA Holstein Association, but is still a vital part of the organization. She is present at a lot of functions offering support and encouragement to our Pennsylvania youth. She is always available and willing to help out where needed. She has judged numerous speech contests, folding display contests, banner contests and has helped run many contests over the years. As one junior member expressed: Beth sets an example that any junior should be proud to follow. She is selfless in her actions, always willing to help with anything and knowledgeable about our Junior programs. She is a great supporter and “cheerleader” for all our members when we compete at the National Convention. Beth knows that the youth we work with and encourage today will be the leaders of tomorrow and her time and effort are greatly appreciated by our Pennsylvania Junior Holstein members. The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association is pleased to recognize Beth Raney as our 2018 “PAL” Award winner. We want to thank Beth for her tireless efforts on behalf of the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein membership.

The Pennsylvania Holstein Association is pleased to recognize four outstanding individuals as finalists in the Senior Division of the Distinguished Junior Member Contest. The four finalists each completed a scrapbook listing their accomplishments in Holstein activities, schoolwork, community involvement, leadership and their ideas of the future in agriculture and the Holstein industry. They also had to furnish a resume and a video presentation highlighting their ideas on the future of the dairy industry and how our industry can better relate to our consumers Each finalist was also interviewed by a panel of judges, who then combined their scrapbook achievements and interview scores to select two winners. The winners announced were Daniel Kitchen son of Randy & Pat Kitchen and Taylor Pool, daughter of David & Martha Pool. These two outstanding young people will represent Pennsylvania in the National Distinguished Junior Member Contest to be held in June at the National Holstein Convention in Michigan. Each of the winners as well as all the finalists are to be congratulated on a job well done.

They were also interviewed by a panel of judges who discussed with them the future of agriculture and the Holstein breed. Olivia Lesher, daughter of William & Lolly Lesher and Audrie Risser, daughter of John & Alisha Risser were recognized as winners at the Awards Program. Olivia and Audrie will have their books submitted for the National Young Member Contest sponsored by Holstein USA Inc. The contest will be held during the National Convention in Michigan in June. These six finalists are to be congratulated for their outstanding achievements in their many activities and organizations.

Each was selected based on a scrapbook listing their activities and involvement in Holstein work, school, and community activities and leadership positions. They also must complete a story highlighting their work on the home farm and tell what some of their future plans will be. The Junior finalists also were interviewed by a panel of judges. The 2018 Junior Division winners are Makenna Mase, daughter of Garrett & Maggie Mase and Evelyn Troutman, daughter of Justin & Renee Troutman. These two young people are to be congratulated on their outstanding accomplishments.
JUNIOR PROGRESSIVE BREEDER AwARD The Junior Progressive Breeder Award is to recognize breeders/owners of Registered Holsteins who meet the following standards and criteria: Juniors qualify on a single animal will receive 1 star, on two animals 2 stars, three animals 3 stars, four animals 4 stars, and juniors qualifying on five individual animals will automatically be designated a Pennsylvania Junior Progressive Breeder. Junior members may accumulate their stars over the period of their junior membership. When a junior has accumulated five stars, they will automatically be designated a Pennsylvania Junior Progressive Breeder.

PA Junior Holstein Association Awards PENNSYLVANIA HOLSTEIN YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP The Pennsylvania Holstein Youth Scholarship Organization is pleased to recognize three individuals for their work with Holsteins, community involvement, school activities and leadership abilities. Each of these young people was a recipient of a Pennsylvania Holstein Youth Scholarship. The scholarship is a $1,500 award to be used by each winner to better themselves through a post-secondary educational program.

The 2018 recipients include: Brooke Carey, Titusville, Crawford County. Brooke is the daughter of Ryan & Beth Carey and she has been accepted at Penn State Behrend. She plans to major in Animal Sciences with her emphasis on Dairy. Daniel Kitchen, Danville, Northumberland County. Daniel is the son of Dr. Patricia & Randy Kitchen; he is sophomore attending Penn State University majoring in Animal Sciences. Mark Kitchen, Danville, Northumberland County. Mark is the son of Dr. Patricia & Randy Kitchen; he is sophomore attending the Pennsylvania College of Technology majoring in Brewing & Fermentation Sciences and Business Management.
Each of these young people has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their chosen fields of study and work. The scholarship fund comes from monies donated to a scholarship fund set up through the Pennsylvania Holstein Youth Scholarship Organization. The Scholarship Program began in 1989 and since that time we have presented including this year 109 individual scholarships worth $108,750. The Pennsylvania Holstein Youth Scholarship Organization is proud to recognize the achievements of these Pennsylvania Junior Holstein members and we trust they will have continued success in the future.
AdVERTISEMENT dESIGN CONTEST The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association sponsors an Ad Design Contest for its members who wish to develop their own advertising program to promote their farm, cattle and/or activities. There are two age divisions and the winner in each division will have their advertisement placed in the Pennsylvania Holstein Profiles magazine. PA Junior Holstein Association Awards DAIRY JEOPARDY WINNERS The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association sponsored and conducted our 14th Annual Dairy Jeopardy contest during the Junior Convention in Lancaster. The contest, modeled after the popular TV game show, featured dairy industry and Holstein related category topics. The contest has three age divisions with 37 contestants in this year’s contest. The top placing individuals will have the opportunity to represent Pennsylvania at the National Dairy Jeopardy Contest to be held during the National Junior Holstein Convention in Traverse City, Michigan in June. PA Junior Holstein Association Awards ON THE STREET INTERVIEW CONTEST The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association conducted their 6th Annual “On the Street Interview Contest”. The contest allows Junior Holstein members to develop skills that they can use when approached by visitors or media at fairs, shows, and promotional activities. The contestants were asked a question in media fashion and they had up to one (1) minute to answer the question on camera. The contestants were judged on clarity of their answer, knowledge of the subject and poise in front of the camera. The contest was divided into three age groups, with a total of 68 participants in the contest. The winning videos in each category where shown during the Awards Program. Congratulations to all who participated in our 6th Annual contest, Pennsylvania Junior Holstein is excited to continue and expand this contest in the years to come.

RADIO PROMOTION ADVERTISING CONTEST The Radio Promotion contest is designed to present and promote the dairy industry to the general public. Radio spots should be 30 seconds in length and may include a musical or sound effect introduction and/or background, but may not include a spoken introduction or “tag” by someone other than the contestant. The radio spot should promote/educate the public on the value of the dairy industry in a realistic and positive light. Musical/sound effect introductions and endings are considered a part of the radio spot and must not cause the 30 second time limit to be exceeded The radio spot CANNOT PROMOTE DAIRY PRODUCTS – it must talk about value of the dairy industry, farm safety, etc., no promoting of dairy products! There are two (2) age divisions: Junior – must not have reached their 14th birthday by January 1 Senior – must not have reached their 21st birthday by January 1. The winning radio spots will be played at the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Convention. PA Junior Holstein Association Awards DAIRY BOWL cOntest WInneRs The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Dairy Bowl contest was held during the 2018 Junior Holstein Convention held at the Lancaster Marriott, Lancaster, PA. There were 40 teams that competed in two age divisions, 29 Junior Division teams and 11 Senior Division teams. In the Senior Division, the team from Berks County made up of Ayla Blatt, Anthony Hix, Morgan Kunkle and Stephanie Younker and coached by Susan Blatt, Melissa Hix and Melanie Younker won the contest. To win the title they defeated a team from Lancaster County made up of Roy Bramm, Katelyn Teaman, Ethan Balmer and Austin Kolb. They were coached by Amy Savage, Mandy Arrowsmith and Betsy Pownall. In the Junior Division, the team from Centre County consisting of Jordan Anderson, Kristen Houser, Katelyn Taylor, Faith Wolfe and coached by Dr. Robert Cloninger won the contest. They defeated a team from Perry County made up of Quinn Dum, Harrison Boaz, Jessica Fleisher and Elizabeth Lentz. They were coached by Dr. James Osborne. The Penn State Dairy Science Club coordinates, writes the contest questions, and supplies the volunteer help to run the contest. We also have volunteer judges from Penn State University and the Dairy industry who gladly assist with our contest each year. Without the help and support of these fine groups and individuals it would be nearly impossible to run a contest involving 40 teams with over 190 individuals. Berks County and Centre County will represent Pennsylvania in the National Holstein Dairy Bowl Contest to be held during the National Holstein Convention in Traverse City, Michigan in June.

2017 Junior All-Pennsylvania Winners The 2017 Junior All-Pennsylvania Show awards were presented to the winning junior members at the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Convention, February 3, 2018 at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, Lancaster, PA. There are 16 classes recognized in the Junior All-Pennsylvania Contest. The contest is based on youth class placings at the PA Holstein Spring Show, youth placings at the PA Holstein Regional Shows and placings at the Premier National Junior Show and the PA Holstein Fall Championship Show. The contest saw 42 different Juniors receive recognition for their participation in the 2017 contest. Congratulations go out to all these juniors for breeding and/or owning such fine individuals.

Pennsylvania Holstein Awards The Pennsylvania Holstein Association presents the Hall of Fame Award to a member of the Association recognizing an individual or couple for their achievements and contributions to the Holstein Dairy Industry as well as their involvement and leadership in other agricultural and community activities.
Melvin G. Peifer Hall of Fame Inductee Melvin G. Peifer was born August 28, 1931. He was one of five children to parents, Christian and Fanny Groff Peifer. At the age of 6, Mel lost his father to a rare farming accident that took his life. There were three boys and two girls in the family and with his mother not able to care for all the children, each boy went to live with an uncle and aunt. Mel was raised by Mowery and Mary Frey Sr, founder of Fultonway Farms located just south of Lancaster, Pa. Melvin quickly learned a good work ethic and at the same time a fond admiration for the Holstein cow. He also enjoyed sports. Not able to play scholastic high school sports, upon graduation he played in many basketball leagues in Lancaster and spent many summers pitching fast pitch softball. On February 7, 1953, Mel married his high school sweetheart, E. Joanne Andrew. Joanne passed away in 2009; they were married for 56 years. Together they had 3 sons, Jeff, Mike, and Steven. Steven passed away in 1980 from complications to pneumonia. Steven had down syndrome and left the family with many fond memories of funfilled years. Mel and Joanne also have five grandchildren and seven great children. Mel and Joanne first started dairying in 1955 on a rented farm just south of Lancaster. There first registered herd was known as Mel-Ann Holsteins and they milked 30 Holsteins as well as 32 - May 2018 - PA PROFILES
raised tobacco and tomatoes. At one time, Mel farmed up to 40 acres of tobacco. Any field that was available to rent, Mel and friend, Bob Book would plant tobacco in. In 1963, they moved to a farm they rented from Mowery Frey. There they milked 36 Holsteins and continued to farm tobacco and tomatoes. One of Mel’s passions was showing cattle. He became a very renowned showman and always stressed the importance of showing cattle and the art of it to his sons. In those days, there were not quite as many top sires to pick from as there are today. Mel was still able to use many top sire from Atlantic Breeders, such as Osborndale Ivanhoe, Apollo, and Penn State Ivanhoe Star to name a few. Mel always said if you wanted a cow to milk a hundred pounds a day Ivanhoe was the bull to use. In 1966, The Peifer’s purchased their first farm in Canton, PA in Bradford County. They purchased from a very top dairyman, Elwin Baldwin. Mel and Joanne kept the prefix East-Knoll Holsteins and went on to register many more Holsteins with that prefix. The same year, Mel purchased a spectacular 5 year old from the Perry Anderson Dispersal. She was a Mayers Majesty Reflector daughter that went on to be EX-93-3E. She was named All-PA cow that year. Her credentials were that she stood 2nd that year at the PA AllAmerican dairy show and 3rd at the NY State show. She went on to make many records over 20,000M and 4.5%F. In 1970, Mel and several other prominent dairy men from Bradford County and New York began the syndicate known as Bradford Banner Breeders. Their first bull to graduate into stud was Chambric Happy Brett. This Harborcrest Happy Crusader son scored EX 94 and was purchased by ABS. His daughter, East-Knoll Brett Linda went onto score VG 88 and was a 1st place two year old at the PA Holsteins Show in 1974. This bull also had other daughters named All-PA. In 1976, the decision was made to have dispersal. The sale was handled by

R. Austin Backus and PA Holstein Association. There were 15 daughters by Brett and 14 daughters by a soon to be famous sire, Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation. The sale proved to be successful with an Indianhills Senator Flame daughter topping the sale at $4,200 and the sale averaging $1,387. Later that summer, Mel and Jeff purchased an Elevation daughter named Ideal Home Elevation Jolly from the Ideal Home Dispersal. She would later go on to score EX-91 and would top the 1979 Sire Power sale at $19,500. As Mel began to rebuild the herd, one thing he discovered was how much he enjoyed buying and selling of Holstein cattle. He would buy herds and bring them into the barn. He would select cows he felt would help develop his herd and turn around and sell the rest of the herd that went on to do well for other dairymen. This helped develop his herd to a BAA of just under 106. He went on to purchase a Downalane Reflection Emperor daughter for $325. She calved in and scored EX-91 and won the 4yr old class at the always tough, Troy Fair. In 1986, Jeff took a position with ABC as a technician. With much deliberation, the decision was made in 1987 to sell the farm and move back to Lancaster County. That year, Joanne started the first Slender You Fitness Salon in Lancaster. They would late reside south of Lititz. They became members of the Worship Center where
they served as greeters. Mel was also an active member of the Lancaster County and Bradford County Holstein Clubs. He also served as a delegate to many national Holstein conventions. In 2010, Mel remarried Arlene Hurst. She is a very special lady and has been very much welcomed into the family. Mel was also a big supporter of his son’s sporting events and 4-H activities. He also supported his grandchildren in their high school years being at cheerleading competitions, baseball and basketball games. Now you will find him at his grandson’s lacrosse, basketball, and baseball games. Mel’s love for Holstein cows has never changed. Today, at the age of 86, he is still running the roads looking for the quality of cattle that will go onto to be the herd improvers just like he did for his herd. His countless friends in the dairy industry is just one way Mel has proven what he advertises, Melvin Peifer, buyer of good qualifying Holstein cattle. Congratulations to Melvin G. Vincent & Juliet Wagner Hall of Fame Inductees Vincent & Juliet Wagner were married on December 22, 1973. They established Ju-Vindale Holsteins in 1976 buying 22 cows and bred heifers from Noman Nolt. Two cows bought that day became foundation animals for the Ju-Vindale herd. Included generations later were Ju-Vindale Mars Mooie EX92 2E who had over 20 members in the herd. Ju-Vindael Encore Vanilla EX-92 3E became a third generation Excellent with the Ju-Vindale prefix. The Wagners bought their own farm in Lebanon County in 1985. They made many changes in the barn and facilities, most worked and a few of their ideas were used by other dairymen when they updated their facilities. The barn and farmstead at Ju-Vindale are always clean and well-kept, ready for visitors at any time. With their children Stephanie and Christopher they built a herd of cows based on a breeding philosophy of high type and cows that will produce a lot of milk for many years. One cow that exemplied their philosphy was Ju-Vindale Tradition Bobbie EX-94 4E with over 250,000lbs.
lifetime. They have bred over 55 Excellent cows, 13 Gold Medal Dams and 11 Dams of Merit and many cows with over 200,000lbs lifetime production. They have received the Progressive Breeder Registry Award from Holstein USA. In 1998 they had a herd reduction sale and for the next four years hosted a consignment sale at their farm. In 2000 Vince came up with a new merchandising idea. They offered first choice out of 15 animals from three different groups: calves, bred heifer and cows. The successful bidder from each group had choice of that group. It worked very well and they continued that practice at their sales for the next three years. A number of show winners and one Junior All-American nomination came from those choices made. In 2004 the Wagners hosted a tag sale at their farm, they priced half the cows and kept the other half to continue their dairy. They contiued this type of sale for a number of years with success. In 2007 the Ju-Vindale herd was dispersed and the farm sold and the Wagner’s moved to New York to be closer to family. In 2009 they bought a farm in Cazenovia, NY where they reestablished Ju-Vindale Holsteins, they presently milk about 50 cows and sell raw milk and dairy products. They were active members of the Lebanon County Holstein Association, Vince served on the Board and as President. Vince was instrumental in restarting the Lebanon County Sale that has contined for over 35 years. He was also involved in the Lebanon Spring Promise Sale that started as a fund-raiser to build a show barn at the Lebanon Fairgrounds. The sale continues today as an opportunity for youth in the region to buy quality show age calves for their project animals. Vince served on the DHIA Board, was a member of the Northern Lebanon Young Farmers and both he and Julie were 4-H leaders. They hosted the Lebanon County Holstein Field night twice at their farm. They also hosted numerous judging teams over the years and a number of classification workshops for Holstein as well. They were hosts for the PA Junior Holstein Judging School at their farm. Vince and Juliet were recognized with the 1991 PA Holstein Distinguished Young Breeder Award. Vince and Julie understand the value of selling good cattle, contributing

back to their local Holstein Association and working for the betterment of the Holstein cow. Congratulations to Vincent & Juliet Wagner on their induction into the Pennsylvania Holstein Association Hall of Fame.
Elwood Ohlinger Pioneer Memorial Award The Pennsylvania Holstein Pioneer Memorial Award is given posthumously to an individual for their contribution to the Holstein Industry at the local, state and National levels. The 2018 Pioneer Memorial Award goes to Elwood Ohlinger. Elwood attained a 10th grade education at Conrad Weiser High School—He quit school to help run his brother’s dairy farm when his brother was injured in a tractor roll over/ fire farm accident. He worked on his brother’s farm for three years and then went on to work at Tulpehocken Dairy Farm for one and a half years as a farm hand. He then worked as an operator of a portable grinder for Farm Bureau for 3 years. In October of 1961, he married Ruth Field, and they began dairy farming at Reu-Hel Farms with her parents. In 1968 a corporation was formed between Elwood and Ruth Ohlinger and her parents, Reuben and Helen Field. In 1991, Connie and Scott Troutman, Elwood’s daughter and son-in-law, incorporated in the farm. Elwood and his family farmed 515 acres of corn, alfalfa, wheat, barley, and soybeans. In 2001, the farm decided to build a Coverall free stall and special May 2018 - PA PROFILES - 33
needs barn with a new double 10 parallel parlor to make it easier to milk their expanding herd. Elwood took great pride in his family, his Registered Holsteins, and his farm and worked in the day to day operation of all aspects until he suffered a massive stroke in November of 2009, which left his one side completely paralyzed and greatly affected his ability to speak. He passed away due to complications from that stroke on May 6, 2010 at age 71. Elwood served the Berks County Holstein Association on their Board of Directors for eight years. He served two terms as president and one term as vice-president. While he was President, he organized and ran the county’s first sale. This became the county’s main fund raiser for many years and he remained active in executing this annual event. Other local activities for Elwood were: Leader of Northern Berks 4-H Dairy Club, Member of Berks County 4-H Dairy Council, Member of Southeast 4-H District Dairy Show Committee, Member of Southeastern PA Championship Show Committee. As a 4-H leader, he often did clipping demonstrations and was willing to help 4-H members with their fitting skills. He was also a member of Ontelaunee Grange where he held the offices of Overseer, Executive Committee Member, Fair Committee Member, and Building Committee Member. Elwood and Ruth along with their daughters Constance and Cathleen were recognized as the 1978 Berks County Outstanding Farm Family. Elwood was also a member of the Kutztown Young Farmers and he and his family were recognized as the local Outstanding Young Farmer Under 40 and the State Outstanding Young Farmer Under 40. Elwood’s farm also hosted the Berks County Junior Holstein Field Day for three years and the Berks County Holstein Club Picnic four times. They also hosted PA Junior Holstein Judging School, 4-H District judging school, various county judging practices, and the Penn State and Delaware Valley University judging teams as well as various Holstein County Farm Tours. Elwood was also a member of Bern Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served as a council member, and financial secretary. Elwood was a member of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association and he served as Berks County Director on the PA Board of Directors. In 34 - May 2018 - PA PROFILES

1979, Elwood was the PA Holstein Convention Sale Chairman and served on several other State Holstein Convention Sale Committees. He also served on the 1967 Banquet Committee for the State Holstein Convention. Elwood was a Member of Agway Inc, and an Agway Cooperative Director for five years, Member of Atlantic Breeders Cooperative, Member of Select Sire Power Cooperative, Member of Land O’Lakes Cooperative, and Member of NEBA. Elwood and his family also won the Pennsylvania Dairy of Distinction Award in 1992. More important to Elwood than any office he ever held or committee he ever served on were the outstanding Holstein cows and bulls that he was fortunate enough to have bred and developed throughout his lifetime. Elwood bred ten Gold Medal Dams, thirteen Dams of Merit, and six Gold Medal Sires. He sent 16 bulls to U. S. studs and one to stud in France and one to stud in Japan. The most successful of these bulls was Reu-Hel Farms Big Mack EX-92 GM. He was enrolled and marketed at the time through Holstein Sire Development Service. He was a Harborcrest Marcus son from a 4E-92GMD Harborcrest Sunshine dam and an excellent Ivanhoe granddam. He was All-PA senior yearling bull in 1977 and Reserve All-American two-yearold bull in 1978. He was then sold to Hokkaido Livestock Improvement Association for A. I. use in Japan. Elwood was quite proud to be mentioned in Horace Backus’s book Seed Stock Book Two! When Horace was extolling the many virtues of Walkway Chief Mark, he specifically mentioned “Reu-Hel Farms in Pennsylvania had 40 Mark daughters and 14 of them were Excellent!”
In April, 1980, the family needed time to deal with some issues and the herd was maxed out in the current facilities, so a complete dispersal of ReuHel Farms was arranged and managed by the PA Holstein Association and R. Austin Backus, Inc. The sale included 125 cows with a B. A. A. of 107.1%, 35 bred heifers, 50 open yearlings and 20 calves. The sale boasted 30 “Big Mack” daughters selling. Elwood had undeniable skills in breeding cattle with outstanding type. With the few heifers kept from his daughter’s show string and a few purchased cattle after the sale, the herd was built back up to the high Berks County B. A. A. herd again in 1998 with a 107.8%. on 133 head. Elwood also enjoyed helping his daughters show Holsteins. Throughout their youth careers in the show ring, he bred for them one high honorable mention Jr. All-American heifer, and many All-PA and Junior All-PA heifers, cows, and bulls. He was very proud also of the herd’s increase in production. The rolling herd average in 1965 on 62 cows was 14,456 milk, and 546 fat. In 2010 the herd average on 237 cows was 23,341 milk, 996 fat, and 704 protein. Longevity in his breeding program was also very important as evidenced by the two homebred Excellent cows, one a Milestone and the other a Mark, both lived to be 15+ years old and achieved in excess each of 300,000 pounds of milk lifetime production! One final milestone that Elwood was proud of was that Reu-Hel Farms celebrated 65 years in the Registered Holstein business as of his death in 2010. The farm has continued on under the leadership of Scott and Connie Troutman, his wife Ruth, and Scott and Connie’s three adult sons, Jason, Eric, and Douglas.

Distinguished Supporter Award The Distinguished Supporter Award is to recognize an individual or company (not a dairy farmer/ producer) who through their efforts have supported and enhanced the work and goals of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association. Our 2018 recipient of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association Distinguished Supporter Award has been an active supporter of the dairy industry since beginning their company in 1971. Morrissey Insurance Inc, Ephrata, PA was founded by Bernard C. Morrissey (“Bernie”) in 1971. As a claims adjuster with Nationwide Insurance Company, Bernie witnessed the sad consequences which improper and inadequate insurance coverage had on farmers. Mr. Morrissey was convinced that these claims need not have been denied if the farmer‘s insurance advisor had understood farm coverage needs. In response, he negotiated a contract with Agway Insurance, Inc. and founded the B.C. Morrissey Insurance Agency in 1971. Originally concentrating solely on farm and Agri-business coverages, Mr. Morrissey earned a reputation as a Farm/ Agribusiness Insurance Specialist and soon became one of the top Agway agents in Central Pennsylvania. Responding to industry changes in 1981, Mr. Morrissey converted his agency from a direct writer agency (writing solely for Agway) to an independent agency. As an independent agent, he was able to offer his clients a variety of carriers who specialize in agribusiness and farm insurance. Over a period of four decades, his agency grew from a small in-home office with a part time secretary to a much larger agency with its own building and a full compliment of 14 licensed agents. Responding to similar needs for affordable insurance with adequate coverages in the Land Preparation field, Bernie developed and implemented programs to assist those in the excavating, paving, well-drilling, and other related businesses. These innovative programs resulted in exceptional growth into commercial lines, which accounts for a substantial part of Morrissey Insurance, Inc. today. Morrissey Insurance is a third generation company, started by Bernie, joined by son Craig and now grandsons Tim and Jason. Throughout its history, the Morrissey Agency has stood by its primary two-fold purpose: 1) To provide their customers with a comprehensive quality insurance program. 2) To afford the highest possible standards of excellence. “Although our office is completely automated, we are a family run agency with the old-fashioned philosophy of personal service and integrity.” Throughout its history, the Morrissey Agency has remained faithful to its farm roots. The agency provides a continuous flow of pertinent information to its agri-based clientele as an active member and/or sponsor of Pennsylvania Holstein Association, Pennsylvania Young Farmers, Pennsylvania Poultry Federation, Local 4-H Clubs, and Dairy Princess Pageants, among others. Bernie, Craig and their many employees offer both financial support and “manpower” to many of our local Holstein Association activities. They help with county picnics,

They also support many fairs across eastern and northeast Pennsylvania, often bidding on and purchasing champion milk and market animal projects for 4-H and FFA members. They also sponsor class awards and special awards at numerous fairs and shows. “A supporter is someone who has given help, provided information, counseled, provided leadership, pioneered new techniques, and has love for a cause. I cried a little bit that day…
May 20th the year 2000 was a day that changed my life forever. We didn’t want to know what we were having, just wanted a healthy baby. I would be lying if I didn’t say my heart all but jumped out of my chest when the doctor said you have a son. We welcomed Seth Timothy Sturgeon into the world. Every emotion in the world hit me that day. I was never one to cry in front of my wife, or even cry at all. I don’t know why, but I cried a little bit that day. A few months later I was attending my brother’s high school football game in Ellwood City. Excited to take my son to his first game. I went and got a hat and printed on it EC #70, which was my brother’s number on it. As I sat there holding Seth I couldn’t help but think, would my son be playing on that field someday? I don’t know why but I cried a little bit that day. Years later, I was standing at ringside at the Lawrence County Fair watching Seth parade his calf around the ring. As I watched him, I knew the hours of work over weeks he had worked with this calf. The calf outweighed him by eight times. Using patience and determination to drive him. As he walked out of the arena carrying trophies and ribbons, hands to full to give him a hug. I don’t know why but I cried a little bit that day. One day after school during deer season a few years ago Seth and his sister Chloe went hunting. There was excitement in his voice when he called to say I need some help carrying this buck out of the field. As his grandfather, uncles and myself went to help him….I don’t know why, but I cried a little bit that day. Last spring as spring planting was going strong; I was working in a field plowing the soil. I looked across the field and Seth was tilling ground getting it ready to be planted. I looked the other way and there was my dad planting in a field close by. Three generations working side by side, with one common goal to get as much done as we could before the incoming rain. Some people think they need a picture of everything. I didn’t need one for that. That vision will be in my mind forever. I don’t know why, but I cried a little bit that day. A few weeks after that I was planting late one night. On my way home I saw a tractor plowing in a field. I stopped, it was Seth. I said, “Seth it’s midnight and you got a prom to go to tomorrow.” He replied, “ yeah I know dad but if I get this done it’s one less thing Uncle Wade and Uncle Blane have to do tomorrow.” I smiled and drove away. But I don’t know why, I cried a little bit that day. Now it’s present day and I am writing an ad for his senior year football program. As I’ve spent the evening reflecting on the past 17 years. I think of the pride I have in this young man. The joy it has been seeing him go from a baby to a boy, a boy to a young man. The work ethic he has and more importantly the pride he takes in the work he does. The scriptures say the greatest emotion is love. The love and caring that this young man has for others can’t be measured. It’s an honor to call him my son. I’m a lucky man to call him my friend. As I have sat down to write this, I know why, why I cried a little bit today. Keep the joy of the Lord with you in all you do. Love, Mom and Dad

Teicholz’s book, “The Big Fat Surprise, Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet,” delves into her investigation that debunks the idea that eliminating fats from the human diet is healthy. Her research shows that more, not less, dietary fat – including saturated fat in meat, cheese and whole milk – is what leads to better health, wellness and fitness.
“Nina’s presentation was certainly an eye-opener for me,” said Reid Hoover of Brook Corner Holsteins, Lebanon, Lebanon County. “The fact that the government food guidelines seem to be based more on politics than science is alarming.”
“I appreciated talking to Nina one-on-one and learning about her research,” said Yvette Longenecker of Penn-England Farm, Williamsburg, Blair County. “As a dairy farmer, it’s good to know there are unbiased people who support the nutritional benefits of our product. She was also very interested in the dairy industry as a whole and it was nice to share some of our story with her.” As part of dairy checkoff’s strategy to convey dairy nutrition research to health influencers, ADA North East also previously hosted Teicholz

Obituaries Ralph M. albRight Ralph M. Albright, 75, of Landisburg went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 4, 2018, in his home. Ralph was born February 10, 1942 in Landisburg to the late Alfred William and Anna Jeanette (Milligan) Albright. A son, Roger Van Albright, also preceded him in death. He was a member of the Church of The Living Christ, Loysville; National Holstein Friesian Association, Brattleboro, VG; Pennsylvania Holstein Association, State College, PA; Perry County Holstein Association; Landisburg Fire Company and Landisburg Ambulance Company. He was a lifelong dairy farmer and cattle dealer. He operated Alrada Farms with his brother Dean 1962-2000 then worked with his son, Daniel from 2000 til present buying and selling cattle under Albright’s Holsteins. Surviving are his wife, Gladys B. (Binkley) Albright, three sons, Daniel W. Albright, Joseph A. Albright and his wife Betsy, Charles A. Albright and his wife Caroline, four siblings, A. Dean Albright, Sue Ellen Stauffer, Donna M Bolze, Gloria J. Richard, seven grandchildren, Aysha, Alexandra, Paige, Victoria, Evan, Trevor and Autumn. A Celebration of Life was held Sunday, February 11th at the Church of the Living Christ with Pastor Doran Wray officiating. WM. Clyde bishop Wm. Clyde Bishop, 76 of Farm Road, Roaring Brand passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018 in Lancaster. Born August 23, 1941 in Doylestown, he was the son of Herman S. and Ida Mae Meyers Bishop (both deceased). On August, 31, 1963 Clyde married the former Frances Frey. Clyde had been employed by a machine shop as a drill press operator. He was a member of the Liberty Lutheran Parish where he served on church council; he was a member of Lions Club and the Pennsylvania Holstein Association. Clyde was a farmer at heart, but a tractor accident at the age of 14, left him a paraplegic, ending his plans of being a farmer. He was fiercely independent; he amazed family and friends by what he could do. He was a caring and loving husband, father, and grandfather. Clyde is survived by his wife of 54 years, Frances Bishop, children; Mark Allen Bishop and Jill Renee Bishop Cooper, sisters; Peggy (Edward) Hardy, Lois (Warren) Buckman, and Mary Jane (Robert) Cerone, brothers; Herman
saRa Jane KRall Sara Jane Krall, 90, died Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Juniper Village, Lebanon. She was the wife of Arthur R. Krall, who died December 30, 2005. Born in Lebanon on August 9, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Harry A. and Cora A. (Shaak) Reesor. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew B. Krall; a sister, Catherine Miller; and a brother, Harry P. Reesor. Sara Jane was a 1945 graduate of Heidelberg Township High School, Schaefferstown, and a longtime member of Tabor UCC. She was a member of Lebanon County Farm Women Group 1, the sewing guild, the Lebanon Area Fair Board, and the PA Farm Bureau. A seamstress, Sara Jane enjoyed sewing and smocking, winning Best of Show awards at the Lebanon Area Fair and the PA Farm Show. She was also a longtime 4-H Leader. Sara Jane is survived by a daughter, Patricia, wife of James Hogg of New Freedom; sons, Russell, husband of Marie Krall of Mechanicsburg, Donald Krall of Lebanon, Richard, husband of Lauren Krall of Lebanon; six grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren.

DonalD Q. aDams Donald Q. Adams, 92, of Port Royal (Groninger Valley) and currently residing with his wife at Brookline Village, Mifflintown passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018, at the Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital. Born on June 15, 1925 in Fermanagh Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late D. Quincy and Isabel (Kauffman) Adams. On December 30, 1954 he marred his surviving wife Margaret S. “Peggy” (Sieber) Adams with whom he was blessed to share more than 63 years of marriage. In addition to his wife he is survived by, two daughters and their spouses, Mitzi Jacob and her husband David, of Folsom, CA, Susan Komlenic and her husband Rodney, of Mechanicsburg, PA, a son; Donald Adams, of Harrisburg, PA, and eight precious grandchildren. A brother, James C. Adams and a sister Jane A. Leiby preceded him in death making him the last of his generation. He was a 1943 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown, and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His memberships included the Port Royal Presbyterian Church, Union Lodge No 324 F&AM, Mifflintown, Harrisburg Consistory, A.A.S.R., Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Juniata Valley Forest No. 88, and the Zembo Shrine, Harrisburg. Currently he had been serving on the Emeritus Board of Directors for the Pennian Bank, and previously had served as a Main Board Director of the
First National Bank of Mifflintown. Also, he had served on the Board of Directors of the Juniata County Agricultural Society. In earlier life, he had served as a licensed auctioneer, with Backus Brothers Auctioneering Service; however, his passion was Holsteins and he became a registered Holstein breeder. Don was a lifelong dairy farmer, owning and operating, along with his wife, the DQA Farm, of Groninger Valley, Port Royal until its sale in 2014, the beginning of his semi-retirement. His dairy earned the title of Dairy of Distinction by the Pennsylvania Dairy of Distinction program and he was also a member of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association. In 2017, he reached the pinnacle of his career, when he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Holstein Hall of Fame. His funeral was held on Friday, March 16th and his Interment was at the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Paul W. Maulfair, Sr., 88, of Bethel Twp., was welcomed into glory on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, where he received a new eternal body in place of his tired, well-worn earthly tent. He last resided at the home of his daughter in S. Annville Twp., where he was cared for by his family. He was the husband of the late Marion R. Funck Maulfair. Born in N. Londonderry Twp., on February 8, 1930, he was the son of the late Clarence L. and Stella Flocken Maulfair. Paul was the owner and operator of the family dairy farm in Bethel Twp. He was a member of the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, where he had served as the Trustee, administrative board member and was on the building committee. Paul was a State and National member of the Holstein Association, a charter member of the N.L. Young Farmers, and for many years he volunteered at the Lebanon Area Fair. He especially enjoyed collecting antique farm equipment. He had been a 14-year member of the Grantville Fire Co. and

Obituary Harold Bailey Herring Harold Bailey Herring age 82 of Farmington, PA passed away Friday, April 13, 2018, at his residence. He was born in Farmington, Pa, October 9, 1935 son of the late Alonzo and Marie Spaw Herring. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roland Herring and Darwin Herring. Mr. Herring was a member of the Farmington Church of the Brethren. He began his working career as a machinist working for US Steel and Dravo Corporation In Pittsburgh, Pa and Gaithersburg, Md and for Rockwell Corporation in Uniontown. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1961 to 1962. He returned to the family dairy farm in 1965 until his retirement in 2009. He served as director on the Maryland Coop. Board, Dairyman Coop Board and Dairy Farmers of America. He founded the Mountain Counties Hauling Coop where he also served as a director. He served as a director on the board of Bruceton Mills WV brand of Southern States Coop. He served on the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Board. He was a member of the Holstein Association local and state chapters and served as a director. He was active for many years with the Fayette County Fair with the 4-H and Dairy Committee. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau Association. Mr. Herring is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sheila G. Gilligan Herring, children Michael Herring and wife Kelly of Connellsville, Stephen Herring and wife Sandra
of Farmington, Christopher Herring and wife Sharon of Farmington and Bryan Herring and wife Beth of Uniontown, grandchildren, Lacey Herring, Kristen Herring, Brandon Herring, Emily Herring, Olivia Herring, Travis Shriver and Seth Herring, great granddaughter Bailee Herring, and sisters Lorna Acklin of Lakewood, Ohio and Judy VanBremen of Farmington, PA. Funeral was held on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at the Bethel Church of the Brethren with Reverend Steve Davis officiating. Interment in Bethel Cemetery. The family would like to give special thanks to Fayette Home Care and Hospice. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Bethel Church of the Brethren, 526 Elliotsville Rd., Farmington, PA 15437
