Congratulations to Marilyn Hershey, Ar-Joy Farm, Cochranville, PA was recognized at Dairy Women of the Year at World Dairy Expo for her dedication and promotion of the dairy industry. Congratulations to Sarah Campbell winning Supreme Heifer honors with Cambell-Run GChip Amelia at the All-American Dairy Debbie Cornman Show and Honorable Mention at World Dairy Expo and Doug Boop won Supreme Champion Youth with J & K Vue Goldwyn Glamour at the Premier National Junior Dairy Show. Elizabeth Stoltzfus capture the Grand Champion Open and Youth and Best Bred and Owned with Pennwood Brokaw Tiana at the PA Fall Championship Show. Daniel Kitchen was honored with the Judy Collingsworth award at the All American Dairy Show and won the Senior Division of the Youth Showing and Fitting contest. Congratulations to everyone at the summer and fall shows this year and good luck to those in Louisville where the 2017 show season will wrap up! The PA Holstein Summer Picnic was held in Lebanon County this summer. It was a beautiful summer day to visit 4 outstanding herds, Himmel-Valley Holsteins, Dale and Kynel Himmelberger; Furnace-Hill Holsteins, Joel and Chrissy Krall; Gem-Rock Holsteins, Kraig and Meranda Sellers; and Klinedell Holsteins, John and Sharon Kline and family. Thank you for opening your barns to visit and view your herds. Thank you to Donald Krall for your leadership. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Richard (Pepper) Lehman for the loss of their family member. Thank you to the advertisers for your continued support of the Profiles. What a great summer for Pennsylvania Holstein. We had outstanding representation and many winners at the National Convention in Washington. There was excellent participation and interest at our Regional, Fall and National Shows and we had an outstanding and fun state picnic. Once again proving that great people with identified cattle have many opportunities to succeed. With November comes a new membership year for our Association. We are again pleased to work with six (6) companies who are offering discount opportunities to our paid members. Those companies include: NASCO, PaulB Hardware, Select Sires Inc., STgenetics, Hoober Inc., PBS Animal Health and Richard Mellinger Semen Sales. We will send out coupons to paid members who then can receive discounts through the companies listed above by presenting the coupons to the company representative that visits your farm. Please be sure and thank these businesses for their support of our membership program. THANK YOU to the Lebanon County Holstein Association for hosting a very successful Summer Picnic in July. We had four farms involved, three hosting ‘open houses” including: Himmel-Valley Holsteins - Dale & Kynel Himmelberger Family, Furnace Hill Holsteins - Joel & Chrissy Krall Family and Gem-Rock Holsteins - Kraig & Meranda Sellers Family. The picnic lunch and the opportunity to visit with the over 30 sponsors who generously supported the picnic was at Klinedell Holsteins - John & Sharon Kline Family. We want to especially thank Donald Krall for chairing the picnic committee and the host farms and families for their great hospitality and warm reception everyone received. We have had a very successful program of state consignment, local consignment, dispersal and private treaty activities. If you have cattle to market, please let David Lentz know, private treaty marketing through your state Association is an excellent way to benefit both you and your Association. We have people looking for cattle at this time, please give your staff the opportunity to assist in your cattle marketing program. Pennsylvania Holstein has a redesigned website. We also use our facebook page quite extensively as well; follow us at PA Holstein Association. We use our social media sites to keep you, our members, with updated and current information. Pennsylvania junior members are reminded that most contest deadlines are around January 1st. We hope junior members will participate in as many of the contests as they can. Participation is easy and the recognition at the Junior Convention is a lot of fun, we hope to have many new Juniors active in our contests this year. Plans are well under way for our State Conventions to be hosted by the breeders of the South-Central District. The juniors will meet from February 2-4, 2018 while the adults will meet from March 1-3, 2018. Both Conventions will be held at the Lancaster Marriott, Lancaster, PA. The Lancaster Marriott will be the host hotel for 2020 National Holstein Convention here in Pennsylvania. It will be a good opportunity to see the host hotel and for get a feel for what Pennsylvania Holstein can do for 2020. Check the articles in this issue of Profiles and watch the farm press for more convention information. Mark your calendars and plan to attend, the conventions and annual meetings are your opportunity to have your thoughts and ideas presented and discussed. We have copies of our history book “Cows, Farms & Families – 100 Years of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association,” and 18” X 24” prints of “Peaceful Pastures of Pennsylvania” featuring the seven famous cows of Pennsylvania available for purchase. Umble “Udderings” - Ken Umble
PA Holstein President I don’t know where the summer and most of the fall has gone and now it’s time to write the last article for the 2017 Profiles. After a challenging summer for making dry hay we finally got a month of beautiful weather for the fall harvest and crops are all put away here in the southeast. Thank God for another bountiful harvest. Marilyn and I had the opportunity to attend the National Holstein Convention in Seattle in July and what a memorable time it was. The folks in Washington did a superb job and one from which we we can take notes when Pennsylvania hosts the convention in 2020. The meetings were educational, the tours were awesome, and the location was second to none, but it’s still the people that make it all worthwhile. When you get to meet the Polender family who bred Ronelee Dabble (who celebrated her 15th birthday that day), put a face behind the breeder of Dutch Boy and see the next generations of excellent Ritzi’s at Sildahl, and enjoy the world’s best raspberry sundae at Markwell on the Canadian border, while also enjoying meeting friends from all across the nation, it’s easy to say it was worth any effort to be there. Our PA juniors did a remarkable job during their contests as well placing 1st and 2nd in Dairy Bowl, dairy knowledge and folding displays. Congrats also to Doug Boop and Laura Lesher for being recognized as national DJM winners. All of these accomplishments don’t come about without someone in the background doing the planning. Thanks to all you parents, volunteers and especially Ken Raney for your hard work. Then again in Madison a few months later I had the unexpected pleasure of meeting some new people who will be friends forever. It seems the Holstein cow has a way of putting people together like no other occupation. I enjoyed seeing a lot of you at shows, sales and picnics around the state this summer and fall and am always open for comments or critiques. It’s good to see that the PHA farm will become a little busier soon as we are expecting another two groups of export cattle to be using the facilities in the next two months. It’s been more than a year since our last shipment and we see how that effects our bottom line so we hope this is the start of more business to come. Dave Lentz continues to need heifers for a Wisconsin buyer as well. We are continuing to put together committees for our association and the 2020 national convention so if someone asks you to be involved, please accept. In spite of these difficult times of low milk prices and tough decisions about the future, it’s my hope for you and me that we can always remember and focus on those things
in our lives for which to be grateful – family, friends and God’s provision and gift of eternal life. “Gratitude turns what we have into enough”. Happy Thanksgiving, Ken Umble

2017 World Dairy Expo Award Honoree Dairy Woman of the Year Marilyn Hershey Ar-Joy Farms LLC, Cochranville, PA Marilyn Hershey is a dairy farmer, industry leader and published author. Managing finances, assisting with milking and overseeing calf care on her family’s dairy farm, ArJoy Farms LLC, Hershey has an active role in the dairy’s success. Ar-Joy is home to 600 Registered Holsteins with a rolling herd average of 27,963 pounds of milk and – under Hershey’s watchful eye – maintains a less-than-one percent calf and heifer loss. Hershey, her husband, Duane, and their family have bred 1 Dams of Merit, nine Gold Medal Dams and one Gold Medal Sire, resulting in eight Pennsylvania Progressive Breeder Awards. Earlier this year, the Hershey’s broke ground on a methane digester that will utilize manure from the dairy and food waste from the surrounding community to produce electricity. When not on the farm, Hershey is active in the boardroom; she serves as a vice-chair of Dairy Management, Inc., is the secretary of the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association Speakers Bureau and serves on the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board among other various community organizations. After her son Robert battled leukemia as a child, she authored, “Oncology, Stupidology…I Want to Go
Home”, a book now sold at hospitals around the world helping children and their families deal with childhood career. Hershey also offers her insight on farming, family and faith in her regular column in Hoard’s Dairyman, Common Threads. Here, she provides a positive and empowering message for farmwomen across North America. Hershey and her husband reside in Cochranvile, Pa. and have four adult children, Stephen, Kelby, Robert and Kacie and one grandson, Wyatt.

ADA North East’s expanded retail auditing program is now reaching into 210 grocery stores in the Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington D.C., markets, including Acme, Fresh Grocer, Giant Food Stores, Karns Quality Foods ShopRite, Wegmans and Weis stores. By monitoring stores regularly, dairy cases are kept cleaner and more sanitary, which boosts sales. Two western Pennsylvania retailers are now involved in ADA North East’s Dairy Aisle Reinvention program, including nine Kuhn’s Quality Foods and more than 90 Shop ‘n Save stores in the region, reaching into eastern Maryland.
As part of the retail Farm to Table campaign, more than 100 ShopRite stores began running artwork that includes Janice Jurbala’s dairy farm in Orangeville, Columbia County. By connecting consumers with the dairy farms that produce the milk they purchase, it builds consumer confidence in dairy and helps sell more product.

2018 Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association State Convention The South-Central District is the host of the upcoming 2018 Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association State Convention. The 2018 Junior Convention Committee is working diligently on organizing another great convention! This year’s festivities will take place at the Lancaster Marriott & Convention Center, Lancaster, PA. http://www.marriott. com/hotels/travel/lnsmc-lancaster-marriott-at-penn-square/ The theme for the upcoming convention is “A World Of Opportunities- PA Junior Holstein 2018”. We will use #paholstein2K18 as the official hashtag for all social media posts during convention. A photo booth will be available at the convention center to use as a backdrop to post some fun and creative pictures. This year’s Dairy Bar will feature donated products from local companies in the area. In addition to Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, Speech Contests and award recognitions, additional fun activities are planned. Workshops will include: Do’s and Don’ts when using social media, diversifying your farm, marketing your cattle, and career opportunities in agriculture. Youth will have the option to go offsite to Go’N Bananas Family Fun Center. Friday evening will consist of the PA Junior Association Annual Meeting, a buffet style meal and an “Amazing International Dairy Race”. A tour of Lancaster County will take place on Saturday from 9:00am to 3:30pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit a working Amish dairy farm. The Awards Banquet will be held Saturday evening and a plated meal will be served. A dance with a DJ will follow the Saturday evening banquet. There will also be a Pie-Throwing area to raise donations for a disaster relief fund. We look forward to hosting an outstanding convention program in 2018. Registration details and ticket information will be finalized in the near future. Please make plans to join us February 2-4, 2018 in Lancaster, PA.

Obituary Richard L. Lehman
Richard (Pepper) L. Lehman, 91, of Newville died Thursday, September 21, 2017 in the Church of God Home, Carlisle, Pa. He was born May 26, 1926 in Newville the son of the late C. Lee and Mary L. Fry Lehman. His wife Alice H. Hertzler Lehman survives him. Richard had been a dairy farmer. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, and was elected to the Shippensburg Fair Hall of Fame. In addition to his wife he is survived by one son Donn H. Lehman
of Newville, one daughter Sondra L. Lehman, of Akron, PA, and three sisters Mary Elizabeth Gruver of York, Barbara E. Nelson of Newville, and M. Suzanne Richardson of Shippensburg, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on September 30, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Amy Wagner officiating.
