Well summer has arrived, even after a spring that was warm, then wet, then cold, then sunny, I guess that’s the norm for Michigan. I was shocked when the Hoard’s judging contest results came in and I was 1st place overall for the Agri-Marketing division. I received a 40-year certificate in the mail the other day. Wow 40 years since this young kid joined the HAUSA. I can’t think of what I might be doing today if my neighbor had not shown cattle at our county fair. We did not have registered cows at home so who knows where I would have ended up had I not had the opportunity my neighbor afforded me. The point is that if you have a desire to put in the effort, many good things can come from the investment. The Black and White cow has been our life. As Bob Cain, who hired me 26 years ago said once, “You take care of her and she will take care of you.” Make plans now to join us for Holstein Association USA’s 132nd Annual Meeting in Bellevue, Washington. This year’s Annual Meeting will be held Friday, June 30, and Saturday, July 1. The Washington Holstein Association has been working hard to plan an interesting and fun event that you won’t want to miss. From their rugged coastlines to their tranquil islands all the way to their snow-capped peaks, Washington is home to unique traditions. For decades, and continuing into current day, the Holstein Foundation offers youth dairy project ribbons free of charge to any show that requests them. The ribbons offered included Champion and Reserve Champion rosettes, as well as first through fifth place ribbons. To request ribbons for your fair or show, complete the form on the Holstein Foundation’s website. Orders received with less than two weeks’ notice will be charged a $40 rush fee. From the National Directors Dear Holstein Breeders,
Holstein USA held its March board meeting on March 30th and 31st in Brattleboro, VT. Prior to the board meeting, the Audit Committee met at the Hartford airport. They reviewed the audit report ending December 31, 2016. HAUSA has a very strong financial position. At the board meeting, a report from the Show Committee approved the judges list and the nationally recognized shows. The performance review of the 2016 business plan was also discussed. Activities and performance followed the trends that developed throughout the year. Participation in Holstein Complete is continuing to increase as more members see its benefits. The IT rebuild continues to be a “work in progress”. Every effort is being made to make this update beneficial to all parties – breeders, field staff, and office staff. This is truly a team effort! 6 6
The Nominating Committee nominated Boyd Schaufelberger for President. Candidates for Vice-President: John Bierbaum, Minnesota, Jim Burdette, Pennsylvania, and Corey Geiger, Wisconsin. Region Three nominees are Gerald Smith, Illinois, and Steve Moff, Ohio. Dale Drendel, Illinois, is running for his second term as director-at-large. A By-Law amendment will be presented at the 2017 National Convention concerning animals who are located in or who are imported from countries without an official herd book. Michigan Jersey Cattle Club Hello All! This edition of the magazine, I am sure, will all find you busy with normal spring planting and the beginning of haymaking. After a somewhat wet spring, we all should be set to go now. A few things on my mind are the All-Michigan Summer Show coming up in July at the MSU Pavilion. In the last few years the Jersey numbers have been growing, and I would like to see this trend continue. Our numbers have never been large but the quality has always been top notch. This is another excellent way to promote what the “Jersey Breeders” of Michigan have to offer. Also, we tried a new format on the sale this year. I would say number of consignments were down, however, on 20 live lots we averaged $1450 per head with minimal expenses. The average is down from past years, but that’s to be expected considering the state of the dairy economy in Michigan and the surrounding Midwest States. I would like to thank all of the consignors and buyers. I do feel that this is a new venue for Michigan Jerseys and should be treated as such. Without the support of breeders the “whole” thing will fail; sale and organization. Let’s not forget why we do this: to support and promote the Jersey cow.

In Memoriam Phillip L. Hart
March 27, 1935 ~ March 2, 2017 Phillip L. Hart, age 81, of Clayton passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017, at ProMedica Bixby Hospital in Adrian. He was born on March 27, 1935, in Hudson, the son of Wayland P. and Kathryn I. (Overholt) Hart. Phil graduated from Hudson Area High School in 1952. He married Mary Ann Hyatt on July 30, 1955, in Hudson, and she survives. Phil dedicated his life to his family, dairy farming and making the community in which he lived a better place. He was proud to be a lifetime dairy farmer and the legacy of it being multi-generational. Phil led and served on many boards and in many capacities, including Hudson Center Grange, Pomona Grange, State Grange, National Grange, Lenawee County Soil Conservation Board, Milk Co-Op Board, Holstein Association, Road Commission, Kellogg Farmer Program and the Hudson Board of Education. He was also a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church. Phil loved going to as many athletic and school events as possible for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially Friday night football at Thompson Field.
Surviving, besides his wife, Mary Ann, are three children, Brad (Tracey) Hart, Debra (Bruce) Isenhower and Rebecca (William) Barrett, all of Clayton; seven grandchildren, Chad (Ashley) Hart, Nick (Jessica) Hart, Burke (Kate Benscoter) Hart, Kristen (Ken) Stiekes, Ryan (Krista) Isenhower, Angela (Will) Freeman and Heather Barrett; nine great-grandchildren, Addilyn, Colden, Carter, Grace, Hannah, Lillian, Brooklyn, Brycen and Aden; one brother, Carroll (Elizabeth) Hart of Ann Arbor; three stepsisters, Sara (Tom) Sampeer of Rochester, Janice (Donald) Farmer of Parma and Jane Layton of Mason; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Brock Hart; and stepsister, Mary Theurer.

Michigan Holstein Association Hey There All, Summer is once again upon us and as you read this, the corn is coming up and the first crop hay is in the mow or in the silo. The cows are enjoying that time of year between walking on frozen turds and swatting at flies all day as they listen to the barn fans whirring away. The June flowers are marvelous from all the spring showers. It’s a little early for the kids to be bored of summer, because they haven’t been out of school all that long yet.
how to bring a group of cattle from various breeders, not on the tour schedule, to one spot so that on host day we can show them to 500-600 people. Most of these breeders won’t get much, if any traffic to their farms by convention goers. So the thinking is, if they won’t come to the farm bring the farm to them, at least a few really nice cows. The concept, I believe, is good but the actual plans for making it happen are still being worked out. Any ideas? Email me at ikegmf@aol.com
Planning for next year’s national Holstein convention is moving right along. We have the computer program for the registration end of things, we’ve been scoping out dairies in the McBain area to put on the tour schedule and the finance folks are busy lining up sponsors and donors for all of the things that go on at a national convention.
The State black and white show (All-Michigan Holstein show) is just a few weeks away and I hope there are lots of breeders getting their show string ready. There’s always the chance that you have that perfect cow that will give you bragging rights for the next year. If you don’t show her the rest of us won’t know her.
Mary and I have our tickets and most of our itinerary set for our trip to Bellevue Washington for this year’s convention. We’re hoping to pick up some ideas on how to put on a showcase of Michigan cows for the 2018 convention. Traverse City is a beautiful place to have a convention, but it’s not really very close to a lot of our registered Holstein breeders. We’re trying to figure out

Michigan At A Glance Relief Spreads Like Wildfire from Michigan Dairymen By Bev Berens Some left Michigan one truck at a time, others in multi-truck convoys. Their destination and goal: to deliver hay, feed, supplies and especially hope, to ranchers three and four states away who had lost everything but hope in wildfires that blasted Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado the first week of March. Thousands of cattle could not escape wind-whipped flames that consumed the plentiful dried grass intended to feed them until spring pasture. Thousands more had to be put down after the fires, from injury and suffering beyond recovery. Stacked hay, homes, barns, shops and sheds in harm’s that happened to be spared, were saved only by miracle. “There’s not a lot extra in the dairy industry today,” said Clint Marshall, Ogemaw County dairy farmer. “But we, the farmers of all kinds are the people who truly care about animals and livestock. We stepped up and did what we could. The help was badly needed down there.” His community of Ogemaw County gathered enough hay, grain, fencing supplies, and equipment to fill a combination of nineteen semi-trucks and flatbed trailers with hope. A pallet full of brand new farm boots in various sizes even showed up for the trip, delivered by men whose own shoes needed repair. Enough money was donated to cover all the fuel for each truck’s round trip, with

$5700 left. “In all, about $65,000 came out of this community in a very short time in the form of inventory, fuel and donated trucks and trailers,” said Roy Smith, co-organizer for the group and herd manager at Rosebrugh Dairy. Jock Kartes was also a co-organizer and both men recruited help from their respective farm clerical staff to track donations, arrange fuel permits, handle money and paperwork. ing materials for the ranches to which the group originally delivered. Smith’s idea hatched on March 19th while tending fresh cows. He and a friend would each bring a load of supplies with Smith’s father riding along for father-son time. Miller Feed collected donations for eighteen ton of calf and grower grain mixes. Miller and Smith agreed to make up any shortfall from their own pockets that donations didn’t cover. Word spread nearly as quickly as the fires did on March 6th. As supplies, truck and a driver for one truck were committed, more donations rolled in, snowballing the need for additional trucks, drivers and fuel, growing by two, five and seven trucks at a time. With each commitment of supplies, another truck and driver volunteered their services, and enough fuel money (approximately $1200 per truck) fell into place. The group left on March 31st; each tractor-trailer had two drivers and each driver and truck was committed to a regular load on Monday morning. “Whether you donate inventory or purchase supplies or fuel to go down there, the most touching thing to me was the display of unity that this community showed,” said Marshall. “A small community that is obviously going through difficult economic times themselves, they didn’t think twice. People just stepped up and did what they could; every ten-dollar donation was just as important as a thousand dollars.”
Relief Spreads Like Wildfire from Michigan Dairy Farmers Tera Baker of Tri-Koebel Farm in Three Rivers, shared the sentiment that all donations large and small added together to make a big impact that helped fellow agriculturalists with cattle to feed and no feed to give them. Baker’s husband, Shawn, and his father, Roger, piloted a truck that left on April 2nd with donations from southwest Michigan. Berrien County Farm Bureau, ADM Nutrition and EDJ Transport helped make the donation possible. Caregivers for orphaned calves grouped on ranches were thrilled with donations of high quality milk replacer on the load. And it was no surprise that hungry, range raised beef cows devoured every last stem of high quality dairy hay delivered by Ogemaw County dairy farmers. The trip for all was emotional. “We were overwhelmed by what we saw,” Smith said. “Eight miles out of Ashland(Kansas) and we didn’t see anything that looked like fire had burned it. Then we topped a hill and as far as you could see it was black--forty miles of just black.” The remains of equipment and vehicles stood where they disintegrated in the remains of a shop; a crumbling chimney and ash, the only signs that a home once stood in place Baker delivered his load to a collection point in Knowles, OK. Shawn and Roger were served breakfast in a community center while their truck was unloaded. Smith and Kartes decided early on to deliver goods directly to ranches. Smith delivered to the Giles ranch which lost 89 percent of the ranch’s 44,000 grass acres, three homes and 850 head of cattle in less than an hour and a half. “We talked cows, where they get their
semen; they had just set up 700 heifers to breed AI which would be suicide on a dairy. She was surprised that we AI every day,” Smith said. “It was a pleasure to see her forget per pain even for just twenty minutes.” Smith admitted to struggling with the why. “Why did God allow this this to happen to good people,” he said. “It made me frustrated.” One rancher tearfully accepted the supplies, apologizing for having to take help On the Giles ranch, fire swept within 150 feet of a dry lot housing heifers. Heat melted the hose from the diesel pump, but the heifers and hay stacked next to the lot were spared. “One of the sisters told me, ‘I guess God just wanted us to get up and feed cattle again the next day’,” Smith said. “Sometimes in life we have to just be thankful for what didn’t happen.” “In the world we live in today, the major media groups focus on division---politics, race, what have you,” Marshall said. “This was a good example of how our industry can unite, without any agenda, just purely out of the goodness of people’s hearts. The media and everyone ought to pay attention to that.”

Matt Van Dyke and Madeline Meyer took a study break during finals week at Michigan State University to pose for a picture. Madeline is a familiar face as she is a former Michigan Dairy Ambassador while Matt’s mug is well known as the famed walk-on player for Tom Izzo’s Spartan Basketball team. What do Matt and Madeline have in common? They are farm kids. Madeline is from a dairy farm west of East Lansing and Matt is from a lettuce farm, northeast of East Lansing and hopes to one day take over the family farm. Matt credits his success from a walk-on player to earning considerable playing time, to his work ethic developed from growing up on a farm. In an article posted on the Spartan Athletics website he said, “I have been helping before I can even remember. Ever since I could walk I would be out in the fields pulling weeds. I probably wasn’t getting much done when I was younger, but I was still out there,” laughed Van Dyke. “You start out with smaller jobs then you progress as you get older. Michigan Holstein Breeders Gather for Annual Meeting

Gathering in the place where hundreds of Holstein enthusiasts will “Explore The Shore” in 2018, the Michigan Holstein Association (MHA) held their 2017 annual meeting at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in the Traverse City area on February 25th to discuss business, recognize breeders and plan for the hosting of the 2018 National Holstein Convention. The featured speaker of the day was Daniel Brandt of Annville, PA. Brandt creates sale catalogs for dairy sales around the country. He shared his passion for the Holstein breed and how he is looking forward to coming to Michigan in 2018 to help manage the National Holstein Convention Sale to be held July 1st in Traverse City. Doug Westendorp of Westvale View Farm in Nashville, Michigan, was awarded the coveted MHA Master Breeder award. He was presented with the award by Sherry Meyer and said, “It was a complete surprise to me, I had no idea this was coming.” He was quick to give credit to God and to his 20
family for the success of their operation. Westvale View Dairy Farm consists of approximately 420 Registered Holsteins, 220 cows with another 200 head of youngstock. They recently installed a robotic milking system and supply milk to their creamery where they bottle milk, make cheese, ice cream, butter and other dairy products. They have two stores, MOO-Ville Creamery at the farm in Nashville and The Udder Store in Ionia, where they retail their product line. They also distribute MooVille Creamery dairy products throughout the state of Michigan. A true family operation, each member of the Westendorp family have duties on the farm or in their stores contributing to the success of the total operation. The Michigan Spring Foundation Sale was held March 24th at the MSU Livestock Pavilion in East Lansing, Michigan. Managed by the Michigan Holstein Association with Eric Westendorp at the helm, the sale had an official average of $2988 on 68 head. Spartan Spectacular Does Not Disappoint in 2017 By Kelly Raterink The Michigan State Dairy Club and Dairy Judging teams hosted the 18th Annual Spartan Spectacular Calf Sale on Friday, March 24th at the Michigan State University Pavilion in East Lansing, Michigan. The club put together an exceptional lineup of heifers and cows, with a sale average of $1,529 over 29 lots. The sale also averaged $1,250 on 3 donation lots. Thank you Ri-Val-Re Farms, Swisslane Farm, and Susie Green for your donations to the MSU Dairy Club and Judging Teams! The high-seller at $4,400 was Lot 4: RiVal-Re Modesty Berry-ET, a December Modesty calf with a GTPI +2724 and +1958M. Consigned by Jerry Jorgensen of Webberville, MI and was purchased by Steve Wright of Calmar, Iowa. The second highest seller at $3,600 was Lot 27: Brenhaven Joel Tatiana, a fancy December calf from the show winning Cloverfield Teg Toonzani EX-90 consigned by Brent Moyer of Caro, Michigan. Tatiana was purchased by Reed Dairy farm of Owosso, Michigan and was the 1st place Jersey winter calf at the Great Lakes Spring Show. It was a clean sweep of the top three places in the 2017 Collegiate Division Hoards Dairyman Judging Contest for the good ol’ Green and White! Michigan State University dairy judging teams, coached by Dr. Joe Domecq, won the top three spots in the annual contest put on by Hoards Dairyman magazine. Members of the winning team were Alycia Burch, Madison Smith, Micole Chase, Michael Herman, Ethan Haywood, Madeline Meyer, Leta Larsen, TJ Frahm, Lance Frahm, and Bryce Frahm.
