Feed For Thought...
We chop Mycogen BMR corn silage for the cows. Stafford farms custom chops corn for us with a Claas 970 with shredlage rolls. We really like the way it processes the corn and smashes the kernels. We have been able to feed more corn silage and it seems to pack better. The silage is packed on an open slab of concrete with a back wall. We try and keep enough carry over to have 6 months before we feed the next years silage. We have found that our cows increased in production when using shredlage.

hope that this finds the harvest in full swing, with most of the silage done and third or fourth cutting hay put away. Always was my favorite time of year—cool mornings and warm afternoons. The Holstein Association is again having a good year in registrations and, after last year’s totals of over 373,000 registrations, we are a little above that so far in 2015. If you are thinking of getting caught up, let Mandi or me know and we will be glad to assist you if needed. If you have a neighbor who has been using A.I., has been on DHI test, or has a good herd management program, the Start-Up program is open to all dairies that want to get an official registration paper. By investing $25 for a national membership, a calf less than 3 months of age can be registered for $8. If the age is greater than 3 months, the fee is only $12. Tell me where you can find a better investment? It could open up your herd to many opportunities for sales and or bull contracts. I know that it played a very important part in our household in seeing what the investment could do. Not only that but being part of your state and national associations can be very rewarding also. Friends are for life in this great group of people. I had a great time at the Michigan Holstein Association’s first annual picnic that was hosted by Bosscher Dairy in late August in McBain. Thanks go out to District 7 and especially to Joe and Ruth Kulhawick, herdspeople at Bosscher’s. The picnic was held to get interest started for the National Holstein Convention, coming to Michigan in 2018. If this is any indication of the involvement needed to host a convention, the state is on the right track. Around 60 people attended, on a beautiful day and a nicer setting. Where did the summer go? When I was a kid I thought summer lasted for ever, but I knew it was over when I took my 4-H heifers to the Hillsdale County Fair. I’m still exhibiting my jerseys at the Hillsdale County Fair!! My daughter Sadie, my sister Luann, and I always have a great time. We see old friends, we eat great food, (they make all the pies from scratch in the 4-H kitchen!), and we answer a lot of questions from folks walking through the barn. They see clean happy animals on display,and our goal is to make them understand that dairy farmers are real people that care. If you have a chance to spread the dairy gospel please do it. It could be as simple as supplying chocolate milk for your local 5k race or taking a baby calf to school. Try it, it’s fun!! Well, the fairs are over and the leaves are changing. Have a safe and bountiful harvest. Feel free to contact me or any board member for any questions you may have about Jersey information or activities. Maybe I’ll see you in Louisville at the All- American!!

2015 Distinguished Leadership Award
ongtime Michigan Holstein Association member and icon in the Holstein industry, Duane Green of Elsie, Michigan, was presented the 2015 Distinguished Leadership award from the Holstein Association USA. This award is given annually at the National Holstein Convention to an individual who has provided outstanding and unselfish leadership to the Holstein Association or dairy industry as a whole. Duane served as a director of Holstein Association USA from 1974 to 1983 and served two years as president. He was a charter member of the Holstein Foundation in 1989, serving as its chairman for its first eight years and helping to develop and launch the Young Dairy Leaders Institute.
Duane’s father, Merle Green, started Green Meadow Farm in 1922 and in 1954, Duane went into partnership in the dairy with his brother, Velmar. Today, it has 9,500 animals, most of them Holsteins. Along with his father and brother, Duane was named the 1980 Outstanding Dairyman by Michigan State University. He and Velmar, who worked closely together for many years, were named Master Breeders in 1948 by the Michigan Holstein Association. In 2008, Duane’s family sold its share in the farm to Velmar’s family. The award was presented in St. Charles, Illinois at the 2015 National Holstein Convention but Duane was unable to attend due to illness. His son Charlie Green accepted the award on his behalf. Michigan Holstein Association congratulates Duane on this lifetime achievement.

The District Seven Holstein Friesian Association
he “Top of Michigan” Sale was started in the Fall of 1972 in Marion with very stringent rules for selection. District VII was the first district to manage their own sale. It was then held at Evart from 1975-1979 and moved to the month of April. This was the impetus for the AIO Club to begin a Fall Sale. Isabella County completed new fairground buildings in 1980 and so the sale was relocated to Mt. Pleasant, where it has continued to the present day. What may be called the “premier” sale of District VII took place in 1983. The sale grossed $140,350 on 44 lots. Sale average was $3189 with McNeilly Elevation Delightful selling for $15,600, consigned by Louis McNeilly of Barryton. The celebrity Horace Backus read pedigrees. It is the effect of building block upon block. As the sale is the foundation for promoting exceptional Holstein cattle, many other promotional activities relied upon this financial foundation. With the income from the sales, the district started offering a giveaway calf raffle for youth in 1985 that is still in practice. The district also covers the meal cost at the annual meeting, and there are no entry fees for the show. To encourage more breeders to classify, they paid half the cost for first time classification. The Annual meetings are usually held in January at various restaurants around the district. However, March of 1972 saw the 1st Annual meeting at Cadillac with Clyde Clark elected President. Thirty-five members were in attendance. In 1976, there were 106 members present at Twin Oaks Restaurant in Evart where Mrs. Frances Cregg presided. Each year a speaker was invited. Sometimes the state association provided the speaker, but many times the District chose their own speaker from successful Holstein breeders throughout the country and paid their expenses. Dairy Shrine Hall of Fame awards were given some years. Clarence Martin was the recipient in 1984, which began a traveling plaque with each honoree being added. Prior to 1998, the Michigan-Indiana Holstein News magazine still had 12 issues. Each year, one month highlighted District VII. In every issue, District VII purchased a full page advertisement. From that, they sold what was called “calling card ads” where each breeder put in a business card sized advertisement on that page for $12 and thus filled the page. Also, each district used to collect state dues at their annual meeting. If the district did this and sent the membership fee to the state in a “lump sum”, the district would receive a “rebate” from the state which amounted to $1.25 per member. In succeeding years---if the previous year’s membership was equaled, they would receive an additional 50 cents per member; if district membership was increased by 10%, the district would receive an additional $1 back---which brought the total to $2.75 per member. District VII did very well with this additional income.

There are so many special people, superior cows and memorable events thru the years. Some events had good outcomes and some not so good---which were learning experiences regardless. George Erickson of Prescott describes a situation that happened when unloading a fresh heifer for the AIO Sale in Hale. His own consignment, a previously gentle animal, went berserk and attacked him causing serious injuries. He survived by hiding under a tractor. Needless to say, everyone was more careful after that. Probably the record distance for traveling to the District VII Show was the Lucas family from Posen. One year that they exhibited, the show was held in Big Rapids. Another dedicated individual was LaFern LaPoe of Clare, who filled the role of secretary/treasurer for 22 years. Mark Wentland of Big Rapids went on to serve as state president. In 1989, both Michigan Distinguished Juniors were from District VII, Eric McNeilly of Barryton and Bryan Neyer of Mt. Pleasant. Norm Gross of Mt. Pleasant is famous for his BBQ chicken, Paul Gross and Charlie Anderson carried on the tradition. The objectives in the constitution for District VII are as still very much pertinent to today’s Holstein breeder as when they were formulated in 1972. The seven objectives are as follows: 1. Encourage improvement of Holstein-Friesian cattle by public promotion and assisting owners. 2. Encourage and assist exhibition of correct breed type. 3. Obtain proper legislation affecting the cattle industry. 4. Increase appreciation and use of milk and dairy products. 5. Promote educational programs of breeding management and quality production. 6. Promote pedigreed, purebred public sales and encourage junior activities to broaden the distribution of Holstein cattle. 7. To encourage, promote & assist the State and National Holstein Association in maintaining its purpose, maintain high character and increase membership. District VII has produced a sale for 43 years, and this summer will be the 46th Annual District VII Show. Akin to a farm that is passed generation to generation, District VII really has not changed much-still vibrant and energetic and looking forward to the National Holstein Convention in 2018. We are excited about hosting the Convention in Traverse City-we get to showcase our beautiful state and our beloved District VII. This tribute to the people and Holsteins of District VI will be continued in future issues.

ew faces, new board and new opportunities are three phrases that sum up the current status o f the Michigan Junior Holstein Association! On July 22, 2015 we held our annual meeting at the MSU pavilion. We had a great turnout of enthusiastic youth eager to get their feet wet in what all MJHA has to offer.
The MHA group looked over the property and were excited to confirm this venue.
Our Newly-Elected Board is as follows: President Hayleigh Geurink Vice President Lucas Moser Secretary Kristen Burkhardt Treasurer Kelly Raterink At Large Directors: Eric Moser, Skylar Buell, Suzanna Hull, Skylar Buell, Ashton Geurink, Chelsea Barnes and Brittney Dreyer. Adult Advisors: Laura Moser, Jessica Jakubik, Louisa Westendorp and Melissa Hart. We are very excited to have a handful of fresh faces on the board and look forward to what the next year holds! Keep a look out for different events we will be hosting on our Facebook page – Michigan Junior Holstein Association! This past June the National Holstein Convention was held in Illinois and the youth members of the Michigan Junior Holstein Association made sure to represent! Kristin Burkhardt and Owen Bontekoe showed off their talking skills in the Prepared Public Speaking contest, while Brant Bontekoe represented in Dairy Jeopardy. Kelly Raterink entered a tri-fold showcasing robotic milking systems and I put together a slide show representing the state of Michigan and all the events MJHA has put on throughout the past year! All of these competitors have said that National Holstein Convention is an amazing opportunity and that they look forward to not only competing next year, but to seeing all of their out of state friends they have made at this past convention! As a reminder, the MJHA sponsors youth that compete at convention! This year we were able to sponsor $150 towards each participant on the trip! It is our goal to have a big representation at the next few conventions leading up to Michigan’s turn when we host the National Holstein Convention in 2018! Until next time…

he Search is Over!
The Michigan Executive Planning Committee for the 2018 National Holstein Convention has settled on a place for the epic event: The Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City. Michigan will host the National Holstein Convention June 29- July 3, 2018. The committee, headed by Darwin and Kathy Sneller, took a trip ‘Up North’ over the summer, for a tour of the resort and to see how it would meet the needs of a National Holstein Convention. All reports were positive and they are looking forward to showing off the uniqueness of the Great Lakes State. While the event is just over two years away, there is much to be done to prepare for the hundreds of Holstein enthusiasts who will descend on the mitten state. The planning committee is looking for volunteers who want to be involved in planning and executing the convention. here has summer gone?
As I sit down to write this, we’ve turned the page on yet another season. After an extremely busy summer, fall harvest is now in full swing. But what a summer it was. With the help of Michigan District VII, MHA held it’s first summer picnic. A special thank you to Joe and Ruth Kulhawick for the all the work they did to make a very successful day. Also thank you to Bosscher Dairy in McBain for so graciously hosting us on their farm. As the year winds down, don’t forget to get those photos in for our photo contest. Last year’s winner was Jennie Koebel (and her photo is featured on this issue’s cover.) We are also accepting nominations for the Master and Outstanding Young Breeder Awards. I Remember When...

Recollections of the Jersey Breed by Blanche Piepkow
want to write about the very first All-American Jersey Show and Sale held in October of 1946 at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. But I must confess all the details are not as clear as I wish they were. I do know it was very impressive on this 17-yearold country gal.
I missed the great moment at the All-American Sale when the Givia Cow of Max Gordon’s sold for the record breaking price of $21,000 to Haven Hills Farms of New York. I went home to milk our cows so my dad, Clair Lake, could go down for the rest of the show and sale.
A group of Michigan juniors made the trip down to Columbus. I showed a nice springing Senior Yearling heifer named Daisy which I had purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sackett of Marshall, Michigan. My cousin, Janice Ott, showed a twoyear-old cow from our farm. She placed second in the Junior Show and my heifer stood third.
That first show in 1946 was just the first of many All-Americans held at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. I remember going down to the Junior show and Pot-of-Gold Sale one year and returning home on Sunday and being shocked on Monday hearing about the fire which destroyed the dairy barn at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. There were many heroes that day getting the cattle out of the barn, however some cattle did suffer burns.
There were other Michigan juniors who went down also. Also a 4-H Agent and other adults who were with us. Tammy Sprague is the only one I remember for sure.
The All-American Jersey Show and Sale survived and continues on in Louisville, Kentucky as part of the North American International Livestock Exposition.

Holstein enthusiasts gathered to enjoy food and fellowship.
Mark Bontekoe (left) and Darwin Sneller enjoy a visit at the MHA annual picnic. The first annual MHA picnic was held in August at Bosscher Dairy in McBain. A great crowd was on hand to tour the farm and enjoy a potluck dinner and great fellowship.
