I hope everyone enjoyed the last taste of summer as it sadly comes to an end. But Fall in full swing and if your anything like me you like pumpkin. I am your typical pumpkin everything lover!! While pumpkin may be one of my favorite things, there is one more thing that rises above it and that’s World Dairy Expo!! If you are making your trip to the event we all wait for from year to year, stop by our booth! We are in the upper level of the coliseum. If you have any questions regarding our products and services, someone will be there to help you. I will be in the booth on Thursday October 4th and Friday October 5th. We have scheduled presentations throughout the week and offer some helpful resources that may help you with your goals. I hope your able to make the trip down to enjoy the trade show, eat a delicious grilled cheese sandwich and maybe watch a class or two on the colored shavings! With the arrival of Fall, we would like to remind everyone to reach out to us about their Complete Program information. Since there is a lot included in this product we would like to
make sure you, as producers, are utilizing everything that is involved. We would love to make appointments with you this Fall so we can help you reach your genetic goals. If you have any questions, please contact us, we would be glad to assist you in any way that we can. From Your President The busiest part of the year is coming to a close for the Michigan Junior Holstein Association. We are excited about our new board as we are finally stepping foot into the year we host the National Holstein Convention!
The MJHA Annual Meeting was hosted on July 19th at the MSU Pavilion where we interacted with youth members and elected new members to become part of our team. Our new At-Large members include: Miriah Dershem, Jessie Nash, and Ian Black. The other current officers are as follows: President; Kristen Burkhardt, Vice President; Eric Moser, Secretary; Ashton Geurink, Treasurer; Skylar Buell, other At-Large members; Brittany Dreyer, Chelsea Barnes and Connor Nugent.
Our wonderful adult advisors include: Jess Jakubik, Lauren Siver, Louisa Westendorp, and Tera Baker. It is awesome to have a full board of members that are all ambitious to work on Michigan Junior Holstein Association activities to ensure that the 2018 National Holstein Convention will be a success. This summer we have been busy planning and most importantly getting our name out there. We held a showmanship clinic for Branch County where we gave the youth a hands-on experience to gain knowledge about showing dairy cattle. Seven youth from Michigan also traveled to Bellevue, Washington for the 2017 National Holstein Convention to network with dairy leaders and gain knowledge on the dairy industry. The delegates that attended are as follows: Connor Nugent, Keegan Nugent, Ashton Geurink, Brittany Dreyer, Kristen Burkhardt, Kyle Schafer, and Eric Moser. This was a great experience to not only learn, however, to also advocate and plan for our convention coming up. All in all, we have been very busy this past summer and are looking forward to the coming year which will be full of hard work, dedication, and excitement! Thank you for your time,

From the Director’s Desk Hello I would like to introduce myself as the recently elected Area 3 Director of the National Holstein Board of directors. My name is Steve Moff my wife Jane and I live in Columbiana, Ohio. Our family’s prefix is Ouric, and the main farm where my parents, Howard and Barb live has an address of Canfield OH. Our herd was downsized about 9 years ago, we now have about 15 milking animals and about 15 heifers. In addition to raising the heifers here in Columbiana, I have worked for Coba/ Select Sires since 1980 as a Dairy Program Specialist doing the SMS herd
mating.
Thank you to everyone who supported me in running for the Area 3 Director position of the National Holstein board. The Ohio Association was very supportive, thanks to all. I will be attending an orientation in Brattleboro September 26th and 27th and the 1st meeting will be November 15th and 16th in Chicago. I will pass on that the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) elected new officers with John Meyer representing PDCA elect-

2017 MHA Photo Contest We’re kicking off our second Michigan Holstein Association (MHA) membership photo contest. Send in your photos of your herd favorites, kids with cows, new arrivals, etc… These are photos you took; not professional photos. Photos should capture the Holstein cow/calf in all her glory. All winners will be notified and will be given credit in our magazine. One grand prize winner will receive a prize valued at $100 and have his/her photo published in the magazine. To enter: • You must be a MHA member • All entries must be postmarked by November 15, 2017. • Photo may have either landscape (horizontal) or vertical orientation. *Only vertical photos can be used on the cover of the magazine. • You may submit up to four photos for consideration. • Entries must be submitted as an 8x10 print or a 300dpi or greater digital photo via email or on a disc. PURPOSE: The Michigan Holstein Association instigates this Futurity to stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of Registered Holsteins in Michigan. The very nature of the Futurity recognizes the accomplishments of the small and large breeder, the FFA and 4-H youth, and is open to any Michigan Holstein Association member. PROCEDURES: The first nomination must be made by the owner of the calf at birth. Four nominations are required for each animal that competes. All nominations are the responsibility of the owner. Dates, fees and rules will be followed to the letter. Monies received from the four nominations, plus donations, less the advertising and bookkeeping costs, shall make up the total purse of the Futurity. All monies shall be paid out in each Futurity. ELIGIBILITY: Any Registered Holstein female, bred by a Michigan breeder and owned by a Michigan Holstein Association member whose birth date falls between September 1, 2016 and August 31, 2017 is eligible for the Great Lakes State Holstein Futurity #35. For first nominations, an animal may have papers pending;; however, on succeeding nominations registration numbers must be available. FEES: Entries must be postmarked on or before and paid by these dates 1st payment of $2.50 with nomination shall be paid by November 15, 2017 Late entry of $2.50 plus $2.50 late entry fee with nomination shall be paid by April 1, 2018. 2nd payment of $5.00 with nomination shall be paid by April 15, 2018 3rd payment of $7.50 with nomination shall be paid by April 15, 2019 Final payment of $10.00 with nomination shall be paid by April 15, 2020 PURSE: The purse in this event shall consist of all monies received by the Great Lakes State Holstein Futurity as nomination fees, subsequent payments and contributions, less actual expenses incurred in its promotion and management. All Futurity monies shall be kept in a separate Futurity Fund and used only for Futurity purposes, and shall be withdrawn only under the bona fide signature of the treasurer of the Futurity, with the approval of the Futurity committee. The purse will be divided among the first 25 Futurity placings.
REFUNDS: When nomination fees and subsequent payments in connection with the Futurity are received they are committed to the purse for this event and no refunds will be made. In the event that any condition should arise which prevents the showing of the Futurity, the right is reserved to cancel same and enter the remaining funds to the general account of the Michigan Holstein Association, less the actual expenses incurred. MAINTAINING ELIGIBILITY: Eligibility after an animal has been nominated as a calf is maintained by making subsequent payments on the due dates as specified. This responsibility rest solely with the owner, and failure to do so cancels eligibility and all previous fees become a part of the purse. SALE OF FUTURITY ANIMALS: When an animal that is entered in the GREAT LAKES STATE HOLSTEIN FUTURITY is sold, the eligibility may be maintained by the new owner and it shall be his responsibility to inform the Futurity treasurer of the change in ownership. The seller shall inform the buyer that the animal purchased is already entered in the Futurity and it will be the responsibility of the buyer to submit subsequent fees in accordance with the rules and closing dates. SHOW ELIGIBILITY: Any animal in the GREAT LAKES STATE HOLSTEIN FUTURITY will be eligible for the open or youth class competition in its age class at the host show. The Futurity winner and the second place animal shall compete in the open championship class at the host show. First place youth entries shall be eligible to compete in the youth championship class at the host show. MISCELLANEOUS: The Michigan Holstein Association nor the Great Lakes State Holstein Futurity is in no way responsible for the condition of the premises on which the Futurity is held and is not liable in the event of accident or loss to persons or property. All matters pertaining to the showing of the Futurity are subject to the rules, regulation and health requirements of the show at which the Futurity is held. Michigan Jersey Cattle Club Hello All I hope this finds everyone enjoying the start of fall; my favorite time of year! Harvest in full swing, leaves changing, and a change in the temperature… Our All Michigan Summer show saw a small decrease in numbers this year, however I am going to say it was one of the best quality shows in the last few years in Michigan! Congrats to all the breeders and exhibitors for bringing out there best and showing other Michigan Dairy Producers what the Jersey Breeders of Michigan have to offer. I also feel this is
good for Michigan Jerseys from the national stand point, we have a lot to offer and we should be proud as breeders and exhibitors. You should all be receiving notice of a change in our Annual Meeting. We are making these changes to try and better accommodate the State sale staff to keep our members up to date and also to lessen the travel worries in February. The board also has made some changes to the futurity. It will not affect any current futurity entries but hopefully will garner a few more for the up coming years. Good Luck to all Exhibiting Cattle this fall at any of the Fall National Show! Until next time…

Blanche M. Piepkow, age 88, a life long resident of Olivet passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017 on the family farm. She was born December 31, 1928 on the farm the first of 5 daughters to William Clair and Lena Mae (Hisler) Lake. She married Paul Piepkow on December 31, 1946. They settled on the farm where they would spend the rest of their lives together. As a farmer and farmer's wife, she milked cows, showed their Jerseys at the state and local shows, drove tractor, kept the account books and records, kept up the correspondence, pedigree work, fed hired men, milk testers, harvesters and silo fillers, provided room and board for hired help, fed calves, cleaned milking equipment, had a garden, canned and froze the produce. When the children were in school, she was a room mother, PTA President, softball coach, bleacher sitter, and chauffeur. In the Lee Center United Methodist Church Blanche taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, was the President of the United Methodist Women's Society, funeral dinner planner, CROP Drive Worker and Halloween planner for UMCOR and UNICEF drives. Blanche also belonged to the Michigan State UniversityPresident's Club, Michigan and American Jersey Cattle Club. She served on the Vic Peterson Scholarship Committee and prepared the pedigrees and catalogs for the annual Michigan Jersey Sale for over 30 years. Blanche is survived by her children: Paul (Dianne) Piepkow Jr. of Olivet, Thomas (Patricia) Piepkow of Battle Creek, Mary (Joe) Barkley of Olivet, Jayne (Mark) Voss of Olivet; daughter-in-law Melanie Piepkow of Olivet; 15 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren and one on the way; 1 great great grandchild; sisters: Maudie (Al) Startup of Charlotte, Barbara Lake of Albion, Judith VanSickle of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Paul D. Piepkow Sr. in 2007; son William Piepkow; brother Wayne Lake; sister Gerri Pridmore; and great grandson Willee Piepkow.
Martin D. Buth, age 99, passed away peacefully on July 24. His wife GeorgeAnn, son Martin III siblings Anna Campau, Peter and John Buth preceded him in death. He is survived by his son George (Nancy), grandchildren Sarah (Carl) Johnson, David Buth, Annalise Buth and Amy(Wilson) Lee, great grandchildren Gavin and Fiona Johnson and George Lee. Marty was born October 18, 1917 in the family farmhouse on Buth Drive in Comstock Park. He attended Comstock Park Schools. He graduated from Michigan State College (later MSU) in 1940. While at MSC he met his future wife GeorgeAnn Louise Shaw and they were married June 10, 1943. Following graduation from MSC he became active in the family dairy farm and along with his brother John ran a successful operation for twenty-five years. The herd received honors in the show ring as well as in milk production. Following his father's death in 1948 a dispersal sale was held which received country wide coverage. The sale set a record for post World War II prices. He was a member of the Plainfield Township Board of Trustees in the 1950s. In 1959 he was elected to the Michigan state legislature where he served for twenty four years. He sponsored the bill to create Grand Valley State University and helped secure the money to build the first building which opened in 1964. He sponsored the amendment to create the south beltline (M6). He was known for working well with people from both parties. He was part of a group seeking to establish a television station for western Michigan. He appeared before the FCC on behalf of this group. As a result channel 13 went on the air in 1963. Following retirement in 1982 from the Michigan house, he served on the Kent County Board of Commissioners for four years. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Comstock Park Rotary and Egypt Valley Country Club (formerly Green Ridge) for 63 years. The family wishes to thank Andy and Jim Dykema, Paul Buth, Bruce Partridge and Gilbert Thomas who provided him with friendship and many pleasant drives and the staff of the Heather Hills Care Center who cared so well for him. Funeral services will be held On Monday, July 31 at 3:00 p.m., visitation at 2:00 at Grace Episcopal Church, 1815 Hall St. SE in East Grand Rapids with Father Stephen Holmgren officiating. Memorials may be given to Benjamin's Hope, 15468 Riley St. Holland, MI 49424 or Summer Journeys, 2006 Wealthy #201, Grand Rapids, MI 49506.
Joyce A. Benjamin, age 77, made the peaceful journey to be with her family in Heaven on Friday, June 23, 2017. Joyce was born on May 25, 1940 in Leroy Township the daughter of Kenneth and Helen (Campbell) Schuchaskie. She was a member of St Mary's Catholic Church in Williamston. Joyce grew up on the farm her family has owned since 1838 and returned to be a hard-working farm wife with her husband, Robert, in 1968. Joyce took great pride in her job of caring for the Holstein calves on the farm and feeding all of the hungry bellies of those who worked on the farm. Her specialty was pies; she made the best pies in the whole world. Joyce would have celebrated her 59th wedding anniversary with Robert on June 28. Their love for each other was unrivaled. Their love was pure and could endure any obstacle life had for them. The day they met, was the first day of the rest of their lives. Joyce and Robert gave life to four beautiful children: Mark (Mark Taylor) Benjamin, James (Julia) Benjamin, Todd (Loretta) Benjamin and Suzanne (Allan) Tuttila. They have been blessed with nine grandchildren; Candice (Max) Bryson, Daniel (Cassity) Benjamin, Ashley Benjamin, Thomas (Maureen) Benjamin, Anthony Tuttila, Cass Benjamin, Carrie Benjamin, Hillary Tuttila, Eric (Brittany) Benjamin and five great grandchildren: Ronin, Hattie, Gunnar, Mason and Case. Joyce has a brother, Kenneth (Mary Ann) Schuchaskie, a sister-in-law, Judy Schuchaskie, a sister-in-law, Ruth (Gerald) Neil and a brother-in-law, Claude (Penny) Benjamin. Joyce also leaves behind many delightful nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Molly. Joyce was preceded in death by her brother, Keith Schuchaskie and her parents Kenneth and Helen Schuchaskie. Her best friend, Joan Acker, will serenade her in song and laugh with her over tea. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary's Catholic Parish in Williamston or the Capital Area Humane Society.

Jersey Youth Academy By Skylar Buell In early July, I had the privilege of being a member of the fifth class of Jersey Youth Academy. The fifth class consisted of twenty-eight Jersey youth representing twenty states. Throughout the week, we learned about the numerous sides to the Jersey dairy industry. From visiting farms to touring a processing plant to talking with industry professionals, Jersey Youth Academy helped expose us to every aspect. Some of the other activities we participated in throughout the week were a mock auction, a Jersey linear type evaluation workshop, and a tour of the American Jersey Cattle Association office. No matter how hard you look, you will never be able to find two dairies that are exactly alike, and that’s a good thing. We visited five Jersey farms in Ohio: Windy Ridge Jerseys, Bar-Lee Jerseys, Clover Patch, Waterman Dairy, and Young’s Jersey Dairy.
Of course, the farms had a few similarities, but the number of differences between the dairies was amazing. Some of the farms utilize a herringbone milking facility while another uses robots. One of the farms thrives on being a tourist attraction while another is a bio-secure facility and yet another is close to having an all A2/A2 herd. Visiting these farms showed us that trial and error is necessary to be successful in the dairy industry. Just because one method worked for the dairy up the road doesn’t mean that it will work for you. In my opinion, the best part of the week was getting to tour and talk with the employees at Select Sires. We toured the Darby Creek bull facility where we got see All Lynns Louie Valentino. We also toured Calf Campus and Marshall Sexing Center. Once we arrived at the Chicester Center, we were able to tour the lab and see the collection and processing facilities. At the Kellgren Center, we talked
with Select Sires employees about everything from what Jerseys mean to Select Sires to internships to advertising/ communications to bull care. Getting to see the number of opportunities (internships, careers) available through Select Sires while also getting to see everything that happens behind the scenes was eye opening and amazing. Some of us that grew up on farms tend to think that the only way we can stay involved in the industry we love is by milking our own cows, but that’s not the case. There are a vast number of ways for us to stay involved in the dairy industry, and, throughout the week, we were exposed to a wide variety of them. Jersey Youth Academy allowed me to make lifelong connections with amazing Jersey enthusiasts, be exposed to new aspects of the dairy industry, and provide me with numerous opportunities. I’m honored to have been a member of the fifth class of Jersey Youth Academy.

Michigan Holstein Association Hey There All, Fall is upon us and I sincerely hope that your mows, bins and siloes are pretty well full by now. Here in Elsie we could have used a bit more rain this summer on the alfalfa but the corn crop is respectable so I’m sure the cows won’t go hungry this winter. The feed guys may have to change a few rations to keep health and production where we are and keep us on track to where we hope to go. Oh well, if it was easy everyone would be in the dairy business. I got to figuring the other day that if everyone in the country would drink just one more 8 ounce glass of milk a day for a year, we could make around 800,000,000 pounds of milk disappear. (I hope the fact checkers don’t find my numbers too far off) I wonder what that would do to our price of milk. As we get closer to hosting the national Holstein convention here in Michigan next summer, the committee heads are realizing how much work goes into putting on the big event. Fall 2017
Being on the tour committee, I’m seeing that it’s much easier to figure out what could be done better on a tour than it is to figure out how to put on a good tour. JVB Red Hot Jerseys Disperse On a beautiful July afternoon, the JVB Red Hot Jersey herd was dispersed at the VanBuskirk Farm in Carleton, Michigan on July 15, 2017. After years of breeding excellent, deep pedigreed Registered Jerseys, Jim and Jan and their son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Yvonne welcomed buyers from around North America to their farm for a piece of the JVB Red Hot genetic pool. The high seller at $4700 was JVB Red Hot Shocker Belinda, EX92 with loads of milk behind her. Cattle sold to Canada, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana and throughout Michigan. United Producers, Inc., managed the sale and Cowbuyer.com provided online bidding.

Kids and Cattle Make Headlines at Michigan Dairy Days By Bev Berens It was another showdown in East Lansing as champions were crowned during Michigan Dairy Days. Jerseys dominated the spotlight classes, earning both supreme cow and supreme champion heifer titles. The Supreme Champion cow, Cloverfield Edwin Mabel EX93 was exhibited by Brenhaven Jerseys. Owner Brent Moyer said, “She completes eleven generations of Excellent cows going back to Pleasant Nook J Imp Martha with three of the five closes dams at 94 or higher.” Mabel is the dam of the 2015 Michigan Dairy Expo Supreme Champion heifer. Mabel has been a herd favorite since she arrived with the purchase of the Cloverfield herd. Her tremendous mammary system along with her depth of body give her true dairy strength according to Moyer. After calving on March 1, Moyer decided to enter her in the Great Lakes Spring show where she was first place 5-year old Jersey at only three weeks fresh. “She came home and continued to get better every day,” Moyer added. Supreme Junior Champion Heifer was Tumbleweed Verdict Claire, a winter calf exhibited by Renee and Moss McCauley. The calf goes back to the first Jersey the couple purchased over fifteen years ago and has four EX dams behind her including her dam, Tumbleweed Gator Champagne. Champagne was sold, but McCauley had the opportunity to buy her back and didn’t hesitate. “We are lucky we did buy her back because she keeps making really cute babies for us and we appreciate those repeat producers,” Renee said. Claire heads to the All-American and NAILE to end her first year in the show ring. King Street GC Gratitude exhibited by Drew and Elizabeth Rupprecht of King Street Dairy, Vassar, won the Holstein Futu-
rity. Rupprecht took a chance with a young genomic sire, MR Chassity Gold Chip who had just hit the market, a sire that goes back to the Roxy family. A visit to Butlerview Farm and seeing his dam, Regancrest S Chassity-ET, prompted the mating. “Not knowing much more than what his dam looked like and the kind of cows his sire created, we took a gamble on Gratitude’s mating,” Drew said. She was born during a March cold spell when temperatures dropped below zero. She was special from day one, and got some special treatment during the cold spell, living in the farm shop with farm-dog, Bella. Her winnings include 1st Spring Yearling 2015 MI Spring Show, All Michigan Spring Yearling 2015 MI Dairy Expo, 7th Spring Yearling 2015 NAILE, All Michigan Jr. 2-year old 2016 MI Dairy Expo and All Michigan 32 Great Lakes futurity 2017. She scored VG87 as a 2-year old and is waiting an October scoring when she could potentially be an 11th generation EX from the Roxy family. M-Signature Walton Whiskey Sling exhibited by the Vitality Dairy Crew won the Jersey Futurity. She has calved twice, both in May, and is an exceptional producer, making 23,100 in her first lactation with a 4.9 BF test. “We bought her in 2015 as a summer yearling,” said owner Susie Green. “She was the right age and we like everything about her. She is out of a Valentino and has a good pedigree. She is also real sweet which adds to the fun.” Sling is scored VG85. Michigan dairy youth squeezed competitions in quiz bowl, judging and management between showing in 4H open shows. Teams from Clinton and Allegan counties won senior division contests, allowing them an opportunity to compete at national contests this fall. Congratulations to all who came to participate and best wishes to those competing in contests later this fall!

This season The United Dairy Industry of Michigan recognized The Saline Girls Cross Country team with a generous Chocolate Milk grant. The UDIM’s Chocolate Milk: Nature’s Sport’s Drink grant will provide chocolate milk to refuel and re energize the athletes at practices and competitions. Head Coach Carl Spina says, “We know that quality nutrition is important to performance and recovery, so we are very excited to have chocolate milk on our side.
