I
have had many great memories at World Dair y Expo and it would be and is hard to label just one as a favorite but our farm’s first Grand Champion
Female in 1974 maybe tops the list. Iowa farmers, not funded by anything other than 70 head of Jersey cattle and to win that “BIG TROPHY”. We were tied clear down in what was called the “Shor thorn Barn”, which was the fur thest from the ring but my dad and our vet at the time carried that BIG TROPHY down. Remember the smiles on their faces so well. When we got home my dad had a carpenter friend build a case around that trophy where it still resides. We won a few more after that but that one is still ver y special.

was able to attend the 1982 World Dair y Expo as a member of the Kansas State University Dair y Judging team coached by Dr. Charles Nor ton.
My clearest memor y of that trip is not the judging contest, banquet, trade show or the numerous people that Dr. Nor ton introduced to myself and the other judging team members Doug Strickler, Don Rottinghaus and Michelle Barnett. It was seeing Brookview Tony Charity in the flesh, what a beautiful cow. That year was Charity ’s first year to be named World Dair y Expo Supreme Champion, she would go on to be named World Dair y Expo Supreme Champion

here are so many memorable moments, but the one that tops it most is when I was pregnant at Madison and went into labor the last day of
the show. Parker was almost born there!! He of course was not born ring side, but has made it to the ring on his own. He has grown into a great showman and even made it to the top with his many winnings, but also learning the concept of competition and making friends with so many people from all over the world. That can only happen at Madison! The once a year get together is more like a family reunion! Full of love, laughter and some disappointments thrown in. There are many, many more times, but it always comes down to the love of great cows and people to match. There

It is impossible to narrow down to one story of World Dairy Expo, the memories I have are countless, the life experiences, friendships maintained and developed over the years there are very special to me. There is so much involved by the exhibitors who work 365 days a year to walk on those hallowed colored shavings, but to have success and hear your name over the loudspeaker is beyond priceless and worth every drop of sweat! It has always amazed me the distances the cattle come from to assemble and compete there. It takes a very special, dedicated team to pull off such a feat. World Dairy Expo has truly has been the greatest show on earth for me, the atmosphere the great state of Wisconsin provides and their hospitality has always impressed me. The dedication of the

he ver y first time I went to World Dair y Expo was with the MSU Dair y Club in 1984. I didn’t know the people in the dair y club ver y well and honestly, I
was incredibly intimidated by all these students who kept talking about Charity. I kept thinking, “ Who the heck is Charity and why do they keep talking about her?” I was amazed at the size and glamour of the show and despite my intimidation I knew I wanted to lead a cow across those colored shavings one day. Four years later, dressed in my show whites and ner vous as I could be, I found myself on the colored shavings with one of my Ayrshire heifers. I led her right into second to last place! Of course I didn’t care, I was just thrilled to be there. But all the time while I was at World Dair y Expo, little did I know my husband-to-be was there also working as a fitter and doing what fitters do. I often wonder, did I ever see him in passing? Did I ever admire him from afar? Did I ever walk down his aisle and smile at him without knowing who he would be in my life? I finally met him on a wash rack, not at WDE but at the Michigan state Fair. And in 1990 I attended WDE with my then new boyfriend-now husband and this year after 26 years and four kids we will be there again, working together to post the show on Dair y Agenda Today for those who are left at home milking the cows. WDE is a special place for a lot of people and for me, it ’s a special place to share with my husband. Happy Anniversar y to World Dair y Expo!
