Greetings, Pennsylvania Holstein Breeders Welcome to the fall issue of the PA Profiles. I am welcoming the cooler weather. I hope you are all well and the harvest is soon complete. I would like to take this time to thank the advertisers who continue to support and advertise in the PA Profiles. Thank you. I know the industry is not in a good place at this time, and I do hope the agricultural markets improve as we move into 2019. This issue shares the winners from the PA Fall Championship Show with the announcement of the ALLdebbie Cornman PA Winners. Thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Alice Sherwood, H. Pennsylvania Holstein Profiles We hope your Pennsylvania Holstein membership is a valuable part of your farming operation. As a member you are represented at many other organizations where we attempt to positively influence the industry. Membership is the backbone of our Association. Have you taken the opportunity to invite a fellow dairyman to join our Association? As we begin a new membership year, why not ask someone to join the Association, then invite them to an event or activity, get them involved and show them the value of a membership in this Association. Many local Associations have their Annual Meetings during the winter months, make sure to attend, they are educational and give you the opportunity to visit with your neighbors to find out what is new and exciting. We have a lot of Holstein breeders who would probably join us if someone they know simply asks them, it is to everyone’s advantage to grow our membership. We are again pleased to work with six (6) companies who are offering discount opportunities to our paid members. Those companies include: NASCO, PaulB Hardware, Select Sires Inc., Rovendale Ag & Barn Inc., PBS Animal Health and Richard Mellinger Semen Sales. We will send out coupons to paid members who then can receive discounts through the companies listed above by presenting the coupons to the company representative that visits your farm. Please be sure and thank these businesses for their support of our membership program. We have had a very successful program of state consignment, local Association consignment, private treaty, and dispersal sale activities. We sold 432 head at the “Know What You Buy Sale” held at the PA Holstein Farm on August 31st that grossed $304,225. Please give your staff the opportunity to assist in your cattle marketing program. Pennsylvania junior members are reminded that most contest deadlines are around January 1st. If you need any contest entry forms please contact your local Youth Chairperson, the state office or check our website at www. paholsteins.com for contest entry forms. We hope junior members will participate in as many of the contests as they can. Participation is easy and the recognition at the Junior Convention is a lot of fun, we hope to have many new Juniors active in our contests this year. Pennsylvania Holstein has recognitions that members are encouraged to send in complete applications. Those recognitions include: Hall of Fame, Pioneer Award and Distinguished Service Award. Plans are well under way for our State Conventions to be hosted by the breeders of the Northwest District. The juniors will meet from February 1-3, 2019 in Erie, PA while the adults will meet from Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3, 2019 in West Middlesex, PA. We are trying a little different schedule for the Adult Convention in 2019. Watch the farm press for more convention information. Mark your calendars and plan to attend, the conventions and annual meetings are your opportunity to have your thoughts and ideas presented and discussed. We know the demands for time and money is tight. We appreciate the time, effort and sacrifice many of you give to this Association. We hope that through the programs and activities offered at the local and state levels will continue to meet your expectations. We have many programs for both adults and youth that we hope offer ideas and ways for you to enjoy your chosen occupation of dairy farming. A Time With Tim - Tim Sturgeon

PA Holstein President As fall is now upon us, so is the responsibility of fall harvest. At the time of this writing, harvest is going strong here at Camp Run Farms. Like many across the state, it’s been a challenging year to say the least. We have had record rainfall in many places and are hearing of complete crop failure in some areas. In our area, the crops look to be yielding well with just the challenge of being dry enough to get the crop off. It was an exciting summer getting to participate in and watch different shows across the state. I am always impressed with how the exhibitors continue to go to the shows. Also many of these shows could not go on without the volunteers helping set up the show, help show day, and clean up after. In addition, many local businesses support these shows financially through donations. I hope everyone took a moment to thank these people. The All-American Dairy Show was once again a great place to see a fantastic show. The quality of cattle is amazing to see. Pennsylvania can once again take pride in the largest Holstein state show. Congratulations to all the winners. The one thing I most enjoy watching is the excitement on the Jr. exhibitor’s faces as they leave the ring holding that trophy or ribbon. As Kathy and I sat watching the showmanship contest with over 300 participants, we were reminded of how much pride our young people take in there animals. We were thrilled that our granddaughter Elsie placed second, and other granddaughter Delaney was in the top 15 of the junior division with over 100 competing. Pennsylvania was once again well represented at the World Dairy Expo. During the National Junior Holstein Show, Pennsylvania had many exhibitors that placed well. In the open Holstein show, exhibitors made Pennsylvania

proud. In the colored breeds, our neighbors did very well. Congratulations to Dr. Jeff McKissick and Mike Uber for exhibiting the Jr. Champion of the Milking Shorthorn Show. I also want to congratulate the Aiken Family of Mercer County for winning Grand Champion of the Guernsey Show. Our farm exhibited for the first time at the World Dairy Expo this year. A calf born here at Camp Run Farms owned by our son Wade and friend Mike Weimer, made the trip. I was not able to go to Expo this year, but as I sat in the office watching the show and seeing the calf placed sixth out of forty-two, it was a moment I will never forget. As for the association, director of sales Dave Lentz is actively looking for open heifers. He can also help people out moving herds or groups of heifers any size. Planning is well underway for the State Convention in February held in the Northwest District. Many of you should now have received your membership renewal in the mail. If you have not renewed your membership, please do so. Membership is our driving force as an association. Your membership is important. Also, we sincerely welcome new members. As we are coming to the end of the year, it’s hard to believe Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner. Our family, like many of yours, enjoys this time to be together. No matter how hard the times are in this industry, time with our family is vital. It’s a time to reflect on the blessings our Lord has bestowed upon us. The moments of families being together, sharing a laugh, having serious conversations, or just making a memory to laugh about down the road, will never be forgotten. The holidays can be as good as you want them to be. Have a safe and healthy fall to all the hunters out there. Good hunting!!!! Thanks, Tim Always love this time of year.  Obituaries  H. James Hammond II H. James Hammond II, 86, of Hammond Rd., Corry, Pa., died unexpectedly Friday, July 13, 2018. He was born August 1, 1931, in Corry, Pa., a son of the late Howard James and Ruth Akam Hammond. Jim was raised and educated in Concord Township and graduated from Corry High School in 1949. He then attended and graduated from Penn State University with a Degree in Animal Husbandry. He owned and operated Concord Ridge Farms in Corry. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Corry where he filled many roles. Jim was a charter member of Western ABC Breeders Co-op, which had a primary goal of furthering Dairy Genetics. He was also a member of the PA. and National Holstein Associations, PA Farmers Association and the American Farm Bureau. He also served on the Board of Incorporators for Corry Memorial Hospital and the Corry School Board. Jim was always a student who lived with uncomparable energy and determination. He was a man of few words who led by physical example. Jim walked with the most amazing God, enjoyed family gatherings, taught valuable lessons to his children and grandchildren, and devoted much time to representing the dairy industry. Jim traveled off the beaten road; enjoyed visiting longtime friends; attended the monthly breakfast for the Class of 1949; and enjoyed local and family research. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife Hildreth R. “Hildie” Jones Hammond, the love of his life whom he married April 10, 1954 in Arkport, N.Y.; and two sisters, Peggy Bryant and Mary Lou Sammons. Jim is survived by three daughters, Abbie Peterson (Rev. Roger) of Ridgway, Pa., Anita Baker (Daniel) of Corry, Pa., and Alice Wiley (Gary) of Mercer, Pa.; a son, Howard J. Hammond III

(Karen) of Corry, Pa.; and a brother, Robert Hammond of Corry, Pa. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Jamie (Heather) Hammond, Valerie (Craig) Watrous, Jim Peterson, Derek (Danielle) Baker, J. C. (Liz) Hammond, Andrew Baker, Joel (Mallory) Peterson, Jonathan Hammond, Kyra Hammond, Noah Wiley, Gabe Wiley, Ethan Wiley and Caleb Wiley; 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, July 18 at the First United Methodist Church, Rev. Jonathan Fehl officiated. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Corry, PA. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Missions, 650 Worth St., Corry, PA. 1647, or the Corry Area Historical Society, PO Box 107, Corry, PA. 16407.

Jerry a. Krone Jerry A. Krone of Fountainville, PA passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018 in the Abington Hospice at Warminster, PA. He was 63. Born in York, PA to the late John Krone, Sr. and Ada (Hileman) Krone, Jerry resided in Danboro before moving to Fountainville in 2003. Jerry graduated from Dallastown High School, received a Bachelor’s Degree from Gettysburg College in Biology and Master’s Degree in Agribusiness from Delaware Valley College. He was formerly employed as an accountant with the PA Farm Bureau before operating his own accounting service. He also was the owner of Bucks County Preserves. Jerry was a member of the Doylestown Presbyterian Church, Plumsteadville Grange and active with Bucks County Dairy Promotion. He was the beloved husband of 22 years to Amy (Yerkes) Krone; devoted father of Sandra Krone; dear brother of John Krone, Jr. and wife Karen, Nancy Mummert and husband Merrill, Marvin, Martin and David Krone; loving

uncle of Patti Garrett and husband Corey, Luke Mummert and wife Liza; cherished grand uncle of Sawyer Garrett. Geary e. sHade, sr. Geary E. Shade, Sr., 77, of Huntingdon, passed away unexpectedly at 12:51 A.M. on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at AristaCare at Huntingdon Park, Huntingdon. Born February 26, 1941 at his home farm on Coffman Hill, Alexandria, he was the son of the late Edward W. and Freda E. (Coffman) Shade. He was united in marriage to the former Judy Kay Fetterhoof on August 3, 1963, at the Alexandria Reformed Church, by the Reverend Charles Heywett. Mrs. Shade survives at their residence. In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by two sons, Geary “Chip” Shade, Jr. and his wife, Katie, of Alexandria and James R. Shade and his wife, Tracey, of Martinsburg; nine grandchildren, Andrew, Douglas and Amber Shade, Martin and his wife, Bethany, Melissa and her husband, Dan, Michelle, Alexis and her husband, Jordan, Dillon and Danyelle; and six great-grandchildren, Evan Shade, Madison, Brady, Ava, Raelynn and Addyson. He is also survived by a sister, Sandra E. Porter and her husband, Vernon, of Petersburg; a niece, Julie Johns and her husband, Rodney, of Huntingdon; and a nephew, Wesley Porter and his wife, Amy, of Belleville. Mr. Shade was a member of the Petersburg-Bethel Presbyterian Church, Petersburg, where he enjoyed participating in butchering fundraisers and sweet corn preparation. Milk Producers Cooperative (presently Land O’Lakes), having served on the board as district president, secretary/ treasurer, and as president of the consulting committee for Land O’Lakes. He also served on the advisory board of the Blue Juniata FFA and was a lifelong member of the Huntingdon County Holstein Club. He placed second in the young co-op competition for Interstate Milk Producers (Land O’Lakes), and was a representative to the National Milk Producers Association in New Orleans in 1975. Mr. Shade was a 1959 graduate of Juniata Valley High School and a 1963 graduate with distinction of The Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a B.S. degree in Agricultural and Biological Sciences. After college, he became the first caretaker of the Greene Hills Methodist Church Camp in Barree, PA. He was subsequently hired as an Agway trainer for management, where he met the man, Albert Wells, who made his dream to become a dairy farmer happen. In 1965, he established Shade Acres Dairy Farm, and developed a fine registered herd of Holstein cows from the Welldee prefix. His herd achieved national and international recognition, producing many sires for U.S. artificial studs, as well as, Russia and Brazil. Mr. Shade loved every aspect of farming, milking cows and growing crops for over 40 years. In addition to farming, he also enjoyed reading, being innovative, hard work, and family gatherings. He took great pride in teaching young hired men good work ethics and skills. He always appreciated the land and animals, and checking his yields and his crops. He especially loved his wife, sons, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, family and friends. Funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 21st, at the Petersburg-Bethel Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Tyler Downing officiating, interment at the Alexandria Presbyterian Cemetery, Alexandria. 2020 National Convention Plans in Motion, Logo Unveiled Pennsylvania is hosting the 2020 National Holstein Convention, and the volunteer planning committees are excited to share the convention theme and logo – “Leading the Holstein Vision: Pennsylvania 2020.” Led by overall chairs for the adult convention, Reid and Diane Hoover, and junior convention, Jim and Irene Osborne, the committees have already been working hard to develop an outstanding event. Set for June 22-26, 2020, the convention will be held at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square. As is tradition, a welcome video featuring Pennsylvania landscapes and Holstein members will be put together to invite Holstein members to Pennsylvania at the 2019 convention in Wisconsin. The sale committee is working on the selection process, location and other details. David Lentz asks breeders to start making breeding decisions now in preparation for convention sale consignments. Deb Cornman will be designing a souvenir booklet as part of the Profiles convention issue. Prime pages in the booklet will be available for advertising, including the inside front and back covers, outside back cover, and the page opposite the index. The committee voted to have these pages auctioned off at the 2019 Pennsylvania Convention. Stay tuned for more details. Interested in serving on a committee?
