Greetings, Pennsylvania Holstein Breeders Welcome to the summer issue of PA Profiles. I would like to thank Select Sires for partnering with the PA Holstein Breeders to promote their Select Sires daughters. The PA Holstein Juniors represented our state very well at the recent National Holstein Convention in Michigan. See Ken’s comments for more details. Congratulations to William C. Nichol who received the Distinguished Leadership Award at the National Holstein Convention and to David Burket who received the Pioneer Debbie Cornman Award from the National Dairy Shrine. Thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Harry Austin Backus, Mary Lou Holler, Abram N. Hoover, David L. Minner and Shirley Norconk for the lost of their family member. We are well into another busy summer of activities that include shows, sales and picnics. Be sure to take some time to visit with your friends and neighbors at your local activities, it’s a good opportunity to share your successes and frustrations with others. In our travels around the state the corn crop is “up and down”, there appears to be plenty of hay available, if you can get it made around the “passing” rain showers. We want to thank Select Sires Inc. for their support of this issue of Profiles. We appreciate their interest and willingness to help out our advertisers and members. Thank You! We have a lot of activities for young people to participate in during the summer months. Give them the opportunity to participate, it may be what spurs their interest to stay involved in the dairy business. The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein members will again be selling toasted cheese sandwiches at the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg from September 15-20, 2018. Please support our youth by purchasing a sandwich or two while you are attending activities in Harrisburg. We encourage you to attend the 55th AllAmerican Dairy Show. Our Fall Championship Show is on Tuesday, September 18th with Jack Lomeo, Jr. placing the cattle. Pennsylvania Holstein members can be very proud of our representatives at the National Convention in Acme, Michigan. Taylor Pool, Berks County and Daniel Kitchen, Northumberland County, were recognized as a National Distinguished Junior Member Semi-Finalists. Audrie Risser, Lebanon County was a National Young Distinguished Junior Member winner. Our Junior Dairy Bowl Team from Centre County finished in second place while our Senior Division Dairy Bowl team from Berks County finished in fourth place and won the Sportsmanship Award! Holstein USA recognized our former Executive Director William Nichol with their 2018 Distinguished Leadership Award. offerings for the sale. Cattle need to be at the farm in Middletown by Tuesday, August 28th. We have found that cattle tested negative for leucosis do sell better than untested cattle. If you test your heifers, please be sure to send the results with the cattle to the sale. We will be selling calves, breeding age heifers and bred heifers. We expect domestic sales to continue at a decent pace. As you have heifers to sell, of any age, please let your Association know. We have buyers looking for cattle at all times. A Time With Tim - Tim Sturgeon

PA Holstein President Hello again. The summer is here in full swing. As I have talked to many people across Pennsylvania, the spring was challenging for many with all of the rain. It was difficult for many to get the crops planted in the timely manner that they normally would. The dedication of the executive board to our association and our larger farm family showed through in their 100 percent attendance at our last executive board meeting. We all were delayed in our seasonal farm work, and it was a true reflection of the strength of our association. Kathy and I had the great experience of going to the National Convention in Michigan the beginning of July. This was the first time that I got to be a delegate. There were nineteen voting delegates from Pennsylvania attending the meetings. It was great to talk to other members from other states to see how they did things back home. Not only on there farms, but things they are doing with there state associations. It was great to see our national director John Burkett at the convention. John made mention as we were talking that it was his one year anniversary of being diagnosed with cancer. He looked fantastic and the positive passion he has for registered Holsteins showed through. As always Pennsylvania had a strong showing of juniors at the convention. Many were competing in all of the various competitions. I would like to congratulate the Michigan Holstein Association for putting on a great National Convention. It was an honor to be one of the host farms for this years Junior Judging School. Watching 40+ young attendants from across the state eager to learn about judging and talking about cows was encouraging. Thanks to Justin Kauffman from Somerset County who served as the official. He did great with the kids. We have heard many good comments about the 2 day event.

There are some upcoming things happening for the state association that we need to be aware of. As of today there are five different export orders that will be using the farm for quarantine by the end of the year. Also there is a “know what you buy” heifer sale planned for the end of August. If you have heifers to sell please contact Dave Lentz. As the show season is about to start our grandchildren are all busy getting calves ready for The ! Western PA Championship Show. It’s a lot of hard work for all the youth that are showing across the state, but their dedication and passion for the love of showing their animals makes it all worth while. Buy a Sandwich The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association will be selling Toasted Cheese sandwiches again this year at the 2018 All-American Dairy Show. Our booth will be located in the Dairy Activities Center near the dairy antique show. The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association uses this as a fundraiser and also as a food service to the exhibitors and spectators attending the All-American show. There will also be Calf Raffle tickets available for purchase at the Toasted Cheese booth as well. The winning ticket to be drawn at the 2018 Eastern Elite Sale on Tuesday, September 18th. The calf donated by Adam & Lisa Sonnen is a January 2018 Goldchip heifer from ten generations of VG or EX dams. The funds generated from these two activities support the over 30 programs that are available for the over 1,600 PA Junior Holstein members. When did you start using Select Sires in your herd?

Jim: My dad used Select Sires for over 50 years while he farmed and I have continued in his footsteps when we took over the farm about 7 years ago.

Joel: Starting in the early 2000s when I started managing the mating decisions.

Mike: I like to focus on high GTPI sires that still are high type and as least positive for health traits. I also will use some show bulls on some cow families.

What is your Breed Philosophy for your herd improvements?

Jim: We bred cows that are good type, especially feet, legs and udders along with high milk, fat and protein components.

Mike: Our herd was a Select Sires mated herd when I bought the herd in 2007. Michelle Cornman had done all the matings since 1997. I continued using mainly Select bulls when I took over the breeding decisions.

Joel: I use the best available sexed bulls based on GTPI for up to 3 services on cows and heifers depending upon how much I like her or how critical it is that she gets pregnant I try to correctively mate the worst trait or 2 without sacrificing others, mostly based on genomics as a heifer and including phenotype as cows.

What percentage of your herd is Select Sires Breeding? Joel: Varies between 40% and 75% Mike: 70% Jim: 85%

What is more important in selecting sire: TYPE â€“ Genomics - BOTH Joel: If the question is reliability or genomics, then I pick genomics to be on the cutting edge, for even some type bulls Iâ€™ve used were only genomically tested. If the question is type or production, then I try to be pretty balanced avoiding extremes at either end of all type and negative production/health traits or negative type and all production.

Mike: Several older Select Sires cows have been good foundation cows to breed from. Bulls like Peckenstein Formation Bret, Far-O-La Sable Shawn, Paradise-R CVNR Sean and Whitail-Valley Cooper have all sired several Excellents in the herd and a base of good cow families. Jim: I think Regancrest Elton Durham has helped the most to improve our herd.

Is there one bull that stands out to you that has helped improve the registered Holstein?

Mike: I’m using both. GTPI – Roland, Humblenkind and Kennedy Type – Tatoo, Dempsey, Gold Chip and Diamondback Jim: We like to use genomics with high type

Joel: Mogul because of how well he transmits with his vast number of sons many of which are proving out to be even better than him. I’m going to go out on the limb and say between Jedi and Modesty one will exceed Mogul’s influence, and by looking at the fresh Jedi’s I have it could be him. Mike: I think the one single bull that has contributed most to the Holstein Breed is 7HO8081 Ensenada Taboo Planet. Without Planet, you wouldn’t have Bookem who sired Doorman, which sired sons Diamondback and grandsons like Tatoo. Planet also appears on high GTPI and NM sires and grandsons like Supersire, Jedi, Modesty, Kennedy, etc. Jim: I would say that Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation has helped the most to improve the registered Holstein.

Burket One of Five Pioneers Elected to National Dairy Hall of Fame National Dairy Shrine has the privilege to honor five individuals for their lifetime service with the coveted Pioneer Award. These gentlemen are outstanding representatives of the dairy industry. Their recognition as Pioneers of the National Dairy Shrine only adds to the honor roll of leaders in the National Dairy Hall of Fame. One of this year’s honorees is the well-known cattle breeder David Burket. David from East Freedom, Pennsylvania, has dedicated over 60 years to the development and promotion of quality breeding, becoming an internationally recognized leader in developing polled and red & white Holstein cattle. David took over the family farm in 1946 at the age of 14 after his father suffered an injury. What started out as a fringe area of interest to some in the dairy industry, the incorporation of polled genetics has now exploded into mainstream application, from David’s work and effort in promoting the benefits of polled cattle to dairy breeders around the globe. Burket is one of the first breeders to place a polled Registered Holstein sire into an Artificial Insemination (AI) organization in 1975, when Burket Falls ABC became available through American Breeders Service (ABS). Today, researchers have determined that about two-thirds of the present polled Holstein population trace to this bull. Several more polled sires have followed to widen the Burket Falls influence.

David, his wife Betty, and their sons continue to own and operate Burket Falls Holsteins, which was started in 1960. Burket Falls has developed outstanding genetics over the years, including red & white and black & white Holsteins and breed changing polled cattle. Over 150 Burket Falls bred animals have been classified Excellent. Over 65 have been designated Gold Medal Dams and Dams of Merit as well as numerous All-American nominations in both black and white and red and white Holsteins. The number of cattle sold to fellow breeders has only built the legacy of Burket Falls’ genetics. David has also found the time to serve his community and industry. David has been active in his church as well as serving the Pennsylvania Holstein Association in various roles for over 30 years. Burket served on numerous National Breed Association committees as well as the Pennsylvania Dairyman’s Association and PA Farm and Home Administration. David has been recognized as a Pennsylvania Holstein Hall of Fame member, a Larry Moore Distinguished Breeder by the National Red & White Dairy Cattle Association and a recipient of the Chesapeake Bay Clean Water Farm Award. Burket will receive the 2018 Pioneer Recognition at the annual National Dairy Shrine Awards Banquet on Thursday, October 4th in Madison, Wisconsin.

 Obituaries  Harry Austin Backus Harry Austin Backus, of Mexico, NY passed away on this 65th birthday, May 4, 2018 at the Oswego Hospital. He suffered a stroke and fought a valiant battle with never a complaint through his long stay in the hospital. Harry was a son of Horace and Doris Anne Backus and the grandson of R. Austin and Ethel Backus and harry and Dorris Nicholson. He was born in Oswego Hospital and spent his entire lifetime in Mexico excepting only his college years. Harry was a 1971 graduate of Mexico Academy and Central School where he played on a winning football team. In later years, he became an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and visited their museum where he proudly at in Vince Lombardi’s desk chair. After high school he received an appointment to West Point. After spending the summer there, he resigned his position and attended Le Moyne College, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1976. One of those semesters was spent at Penn State. He was a devoted student of history particularly England and the Vikings. Harry then began work as an advertising representative for his family’s newspaper, The Mexico Independent. Shortly thereafter, he began furnishing a cartoon each week for the paper. It never included politics or hurt anyone’s feelings. This weekly chore continued until the recent sale of the newspaper. In the summer of 1981, while thus employed, he attended NYU in New York City to take advance courses in journalism. While there, he was hit by a taxi and spent three months in a coma at St. Vincent Hospital in southern Manhattan. He came home from there and spend a fourth month in a coma in a Syracuse Hospital. Gradually, he worked his way back to a remarkable recovery and spent his entire lifetime in the newspaper field. In later years, he would quite often serve as a driver and companion to his father on trips that would cover the eastern U.S. (especially New York and Pennsyl24 - August 2018 - PA PROFILES

vania). None of this ever interfered with the production of his weekly cartoon. Harry was brought up in his younger years summering on the shore of Lake Ontario off Sage Creek Road and the town of Mexico. He never lost the love of the lake. He often would visit the Mexico Point boat launch to see the beautiful sunsets of the lake and watch the boats come in. This was usually followed by a visit to a beautiful, peaceful small herd or long-horned cattle of Scottish decent, then by an appealing herd of Holstein cattle. Surviving family members include is father and mother, brother John (Debra) Buckus, sister Kim (Marc) Grindle, four nephews, Andrew (Hidemi) Backus, Jonathan Backus and Jesse (Lauren) Vorrasi and Derek Grindle. Uncle and Aunt William and Nancy Nicholson, cousins are Mark (Jane) Backus and family, Dr. Katherine Nicholson, Shamus Nicholson, Sean (Lindsey) Nicholson and son Emmett, Sara (Craig) Clark, Heather Nicholson, Judy Backus and Brenda (James) Hotchkiss and family. Harry was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mexico and funeral services were held at the church on Monday, May 7, 2018 with Rev. Karen Green officiating.

Mary Lou Holler Mary Lou Holler, age 78, of Scott Road, Jamestown passed away April 21, 2018 in her residence surrounded by family. She was born in Meadville on September 25, 1939 a daughter of Joseph and Louise (Yocum) Yeager. She was a 1957 graduate of Meadville High School and on June 22, 1957 Mary Lou married James Holler. He survives. She truly enjoyed time spent with her children and grandchildren whether it was cooking for them or watching them show animals at the fairs. Jim and Mary Lou enjoyed traveling with friends and lived on their dairy farm HollerView Farm for 60 years. Jim and Mary Lou owned and op-

erated Fin and Feather Restaurant in Linesville for 13 years. Mary Lou also worked at Jamestown Mini Mart for 5 years and Charlies Candies in Meadville for 5 years. In addition to her husband she is survived by three children; Debra Groner and her husband Joseph of Jamestown, Joseph Holler and his wife Susan of Sharpsville, and Jamie Holler and his wife Veronica of Jamestown, two sisters; Karen Wentworth and her husband Robert of Conneaut, OH and Linda Carpenter and her husband Gordon of Meadville, three grandchildren; Julianne Holler of Sharpsville, Sydney Holler of Jamestown, and Weston Holler of Jamestown; several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents and several brother and sister-in-laws. The funeral service was held April 25, 2018 at the Loutzenhiser-Randall Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Jamestown with Pastor Jerry Alsdorf, officiating. Burial was in Park Lawn Cemetery. Abram N. Hoover Abram N. Hoover, 91, formerly of South Annville Twp. Passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2018 in Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim. He was the husband of the late H. Jean Metzler Hoover who passed away on October 2, 2017. Born in Bareville, PA on March 14, 1927, he was the son of the late Harry O. and Bertha M. Hoover. Abram was a pastor for over 25 years at Gingrichs Mennonite Church, W. Cornwall Twp. Where he especially enjoyed his visitation ministry and was very involved with the Lancaster Mennonite Conference activities. Abram also owned and operated a dairy and beef farm in South Annville Township, which is presently

in its 3rd generation. His greatest farm passion was feeding beef cattle. He also began Abram Hoover Wood Shavings in the late 1980’s and it continues today as a family business. Abram and his late wife served as a host for the Recovery of Hope Program through Philhaven Hospital and hosted various tour groups overseas. He was a former member of the Agway Advisory Committee and the Lehigh Valley Farmers Dairy Co-op. Surviving are four sons Dale L. husband of Charlotte Hoover of Lebanon, Nevin R. husband of Eileen Hoover of Annville, Dean L. husband of Mary Ann Hoover of Lebanon, Reid K. husband of Diane Hoover of Lebanon, a daughter Karen J. wife of Edwin Copenhaver of Annville, a sister of Alta Ranck of Lititz, 16 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Three brothers Harlan, Lester and Lloyd Hoover and sister Erla Bentley preceded him in death. David L. Minner David L. Minner, 73 of New Wilmington, Shenango Township, passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at his family’s residence, after fighting pulmonary fibrosis for a number of years. Dave was called into Heaven, by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Welcoming him, into his Eternal Home, was the love of his life, his wife, Vonda Lee (Patterson) Minner. Dave was born in New Castle on March 10, 1945, to Clarence and Betty (McClenahan) Minner. Dave was a 1963 graduate of West Middlesex High School. He then attended Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. Dave married his high school sweetheart, Vonda, on July 16, 1966, at the Lebanon United Presbyterian Church. Dave and Vonda have a daughter Heidi Aileen (Minner) Minor, whom they welcome into their lives on September 20, 1972. Dave was a member of Lebanon

United Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the PA Holstein Association, Mercer County Holstein Club, where he served as a past president, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, NRA, National Wild Turkey Federation and North American Hunting Club. Dave lived his entire life, on the family’s dairy farm, which became known as West-Branch Holsteins. He and his brother, Bob, worked side-by-side making the farm into something they have been very proud of. Dave’s passion was for the farm and fields. He loved his family and doing all he could for and with them. Dave loved hunting locally and out west. He enjoyed fishing, however, there was nothing he loved more than to make memories with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren, at the farm and in the woods. David is survived by his daughter, Heidi (Steve) Minor, three grandchildren, Amanda (Scott) Duncan, Adam Minor and his fiancé Kristine, and Austin Minor, all of Grove City. The joy of his life was his great-granddaughter, Alivia Aileen Duncan. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Norma Minner (wife of the late Paul Minner) of Mercer; his sister, Libby Miller of New Castle; his brother, Bob Minner and his wife, Ann, of West Middlesex; and sister, Janet White, Wife of Dick White, of Wexford; sister-in-law, Susan Forsman of Jacksonville, Florida; stepmotherin-law, Marian Patterson Robson of Jacksonville, Florida; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Dave was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kevin Minner and Paul Minner; and his beloved wife Vonda. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at his church with Pastor Tom Wilson, assistant pastor, and the Rev. Augie Hurst officiating. Interment will be in the Union Home Cemetery, Scrubgrass, Wolf Creek Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Aid Society, 350 W. Market Street, Mercer, PA 16137; or Three Rivers Hospice, New Castle.

Shirley Norconk Shirley Norconk, 91, of Wilmot, passed away Monday, June 4, 2018, at

her home with her loving family at her side. Shirley was born November 8, 1926, in Lopez, the daughter of the late Ernest and Lila Mae Steafather Fiocca. She graduated from the Dushore High School, a member of the Class of 1944, and was a music major at Mansfield University. In her younger years, she worked for Bill and Lucy Sick at their Ben Franklin Store in Dushore. She also worked for Dr. Karl Peterson in Wyalusing. Shirley was a key partner in the success of the family farm in Wilmot Twp. She also served on the American Field Service Selection Committee for the Wyalusing School District and hosted as AFS student Louise Wolzak Tjoonk, of the Netherlands. Known for her musical talent, she sang and played for many functions over her lifetime, which included being the organist at St. John’s Lutheran Chapel. She was an active member of the Dushore Music Club for more than 70 years. She was a loving spouse, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her greatest love of all was her family. Surviving are her son, Gary R. (Sharon) Norconk, Hunlock Creek; daughter Linda Kisner, New Albany; four grandchildren, Tammy (Bruce) Stough, Kelly Kisner, Timothy (Jennifer) Norconk and Shaun Norconk; eight greatgrandchildren, Alexandra (Aaron) Bowersox, Megan and Ryan Stough and Teagan, Emmyrson, Finley, Jackson and Noah Norconk; Sister-in-law, Kathryn Slawta, Vestal Center, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Norconk; brother and sister-in-law, Duane “Skip” and Elizabeth Fiocca; sisters-in-law, Arlene (Lewis) Nueber, Marian (Douglas) Blemle and Rachel (Paul) Miller; and a brotherin-law, Charles Slawta. Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home and service at the St. John’s Chapel, Wilmot with Rev. Phyllis A Pelletier officiating. Interment is in the Norconk Cemetery. Thank You - Host Farms Junior Judging School The 2018 Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Judging School was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association and hosted by the Beaver, Butler and Lawrence County Holstein Associations. There were over 40 participants in attendance this year. Herds that were visited during the school: Dochaven, Jeff McKissick Family; Scottown, Rob McKissick Family, Camp-Run Holsteins, Tim Sturgeon Family, Simpson Holsteins, Justin Simpson Family and Oakland Farm Guernseys, Moser Family. Participants had the opportunity to place 16 classes over two days and work on written and oral reasons on classes. Participants were also involved in discussing the classes and talking in front of the whole group on placing the classes. We appreciate the work of Justin Kaufman who served as the teacher for our two-day conference. The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association is most appreciative to the Beaver, Butler and Lawrence County Holstein Associations for helping organize the school and allowing us to judge some excellent cattle in their counties.
