The New Year came in with a bang. I have been thinking about everyone who has to work out in the bitter cold trying to keep their herd safe and your equipment running. Thank you for your dedication. Welcome to the 2018 February Profiles. You will notice there is a little change in the date of this issue. The PA Holstein Board of Directors voted to change the months that the Profiles will be coming to your mailbox. The updated schedule is as follows: • February – Ad Deadline January 1st – This is the Convention Issue Debbie Cornman • May – Ad Deadline April 1st - This is the Youth and Adult Convention review and this issue will be sent to the National Holstein Convention. • August – Ad Deadline July 1st – Our Summer issue – Fall Sale consignments • November – Ad Deadline October 1st – Show results All camera-ready ads are due 5 days after the first deadline The next issue will be May, I will be looking for page Sponsors for the Youth Convention pages. To sponsor a full page - $200 and a ½ page is $100. Contact me any time to add your name, county association or business as a youth page sponsor. The South Central District welcomes you all to Holsteins and History in the Red Rose City. This year’s convention will be held at the Lancaster Marriott, Lancaster, PA on March 1st, 2nd and 3rd. One of the features this year will be a tribute to Osborndale Ivanhoe and Atlantic Breeders with a round table discussion. More details are on page 13. March 2nd is tour day where you will start out with a wonderful breakfast at Shady Maple. Ken’s Comments by Ken Raney The dairy industry in Pennsylvania as we all know has been decreasing in dairy farms and total milk cows. As Pennsylvania Holstein members we still have a tremendous opportunity to produce milk and dairy genetics in the state of Pennsylvania, as we are very close (within a 24 hour drive) of at least 50% of the United States population. We need to continue to have a positive impact on the agricultural industry in Pennsylvania and work to meet our customer’s needs for dairy products. The PA Holstein Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Standing Committees plan activities and programs that we hope will improve your abilities as a Holstein breeder and dairyman to remain viable in the years to come. The Board of Directors will be voting in February on new officers for the Association. At the Spring meeting of the Executive Committee, we will be appointing Standing Committees to serve the Association for 2018-2020. If you would like to serve on any of the following committees: Activities, Sale, Show, Youth, Finance, or Resolutions, let the office staff know and we can add your name for the committee you would like to be involved with over the next two years. Most committees meet once a year, so the time commitment is not great, but we encourage participation, as many of our program ideas come from these Standing Committees. Our State Convention is being planned and hosted by the breeders of the South-Central District. The Convention will be held March 1-3, 2018 at the Lancaster Marriott, Lancaster. The convention will include opportunities to see what’s new in the Holstein industry as well as visit and network with breeders from around the state. The State Spring Show will be held on Friday, March 30, 2018 at the Farm Show Building in Harrisburg. We encourage all show enthusiasts to bring out your best as we start the show campaign for 2018. More information will appear in the farm press along with entry information. Entries are due March 31, 2018 for the 2020 Keystone Futurity. Entry information can be found in Profiles and will also be in the farm press and at our website www.paholsteins.com The Futurity encourages breeders to select calves, allow them to develop and then show them as fresh 3 year olds. Check the eligibility rules, we would encourage you to read them and then participate in this program. There are a number of Consignment and Dispersal sales highlighted under the calendar of events, if you need that special show calf or heifer or are looking for that outstanding individual to add to your farm, we would appreciate your support at any of these sales. Our consignment and dispersal sales are conducted for the benefit of the members as either consignors or buyers, we look forward to your participation. Hi Holstein Enthusiasts,
Well we sure got a rude awakening to the howling winds and single digits of winter with the New Year and I’m glad to be where I am at my desk inside looking out for now. We are finally seeing some progress on the export side moving cattle from the PHA farm as one load has left in December and another one scheduled for early February. As fate would have it it’s scheduled for during the junior convention so maybe Tracy and Leslie will need to put their boots on and help load heifers! Looking further ahead hopefully more business will be coming our way as the interest for US genetics by foreign countries continues to be strong and exporting is
ticking up again after being stagnant for awhile. As for the farm, when you make your way to Lancaster for the state convention the first weekend of March, take a detour and stop in and visit the property that we as PHA members have ownership in. Speaking of the convention, I hope that all of you are planning to enjoy all that the South Central district has put together for our enjoyment. For one, we will be only a few miles away from where Osborndale Ivanhoe and other great sires were stabled at Atlantic breeders and be seeing and hearing lots of history about them, other Holstein facts and memorabilia. I hope to see you there. As for the cold weather and looking at the thermometer it similar to the milk situation. It can’t get much lower than this! I wish I had an answer but I do have a question. What would happen if every dairyman in America would milk five less cows? Would that be enough to delete the surplus that we have now and holds price down? One thing I do know – the thermometer will rise again and I hope the milk price follows. Wishing you and your families the best. – Ken Umble P.S. Kitchen Receives National Judi Collinsworth Award BRATTLEBORO, Vt., December 21, 2017 – Daniel Kitchen of Danville, Pa. is the recipient of the 2017 National Judi Collinsworth Outstanding Exhibitor Award from Holstein Association USA, Inc. This award recognizes youth for their outstanding Holstein project work and involvement with their cattle and dairy activities. Kitchen is the thirteenth Junior Holstein member to receive this honor, and receives a $500 scholarship. The Judi Collinsworth Outstanding Junior Exhibitor Memorial Award is presented annually, in memory of former Holstein Association USA Executive Director of Member and Industry Services, Judi Collinsworth. Winners are selected at each of the four National Junior Holstein Shows, based on sportsmanship, herdsmanship and level of participation in Holstein activities. All winners receive a $250 scholarship and are invited to apply for the National Judi Collinsworth Outstanding Junior Exhibitor Award. Kitchen is the 20-year-old son of Randall and Patricia Kitchen, and is working towards his degree in animal science at the Pennsylvania State University. He enjoys being involved in their home operation, Kitch-Vue Dairy Farm, caring for calves, assisting in herd health management and preparing animals for the showring. Upon graduation, Kitchen plans to return to the family farm and pursue a career as a dairy nutritionist. “This award recognizes years of hard work, not only in the show ring, but also at home on the farm,” said Kitchen. “I look back at other recipients of this award and their success in the industry today and I’m humbled to be included in this group. This award gives me motivation to continue working with, breeding and developing quality Registered Holstein cattle.” Kitchen has been an active member of the Pennsylvania and National Junior Holstein Associations for the past 10 years. He annually attends Holstein conventions and has competed successfully in several activities, including dairy jeopardy, the folding display contest and prepared public speaking at State and National levels. Kitchen served as a member of Pennsylvania’s Junior Holstein Association Executive Committee for three years. Recently, Daniel placed first in the All-American Youth Fitting and Showmanship Contest in Harrisburg, Pa. Kitchen received the Judi Collinsworth Outstanding Junior Exhibitor Memorial Award at the Premier National Junior Holstein Show. Other winners at 2017 National Junior Holstein Shows include Jill Seiler, Valley Center, Kan., Southern Spring National Junior Holstein Show; Rachel McCullough, Juda, Wis., International Junior Holstein Show; and Erin Leach, Linwood, Kan., Grand National Junior Holstein Show. 2020 Keystone Holstein Three-Year-Old Futurity The 2020 Keystone Holstein Three-Year-Old Futurity entries are now being accepted. The Keystone Holstein Futurity is a project of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association to stimulate interest in breeding and developing outstanding Registered Holsteins for production and type regardless of individual herd size. Three nominations are required for each animal that competes. The first payment for the 2020 Futurity is due March 31, 2018. Any breeder may nominate as many heifer calves as they wish.
Rules and Conditions Eligibility: Any Registered Holstein female of 87% parentage or higher, bred by a Pennsylvania Holstein member, and carrying a Pennsylvania Holstein members prefix, and born between September 1, 2016 and August 31, 2017 is eligible for the Keystone Holstein Futurity.
Fees: First payment of $3.00/head with nomination paid by March 31, 2018, second payment of $11.00/head paid by September 15, 2018 and the third payment of $20.00/head paid by September 15, 2019.
Purse: All Futurity monies shall be used only for Futurity purposes. The purse in this event will be divided with 50% being awarded to the first-place animal. The remainder will be divided among those competitors who show in the 2020 Futurity Class.
Refunds: All nomination fees are committed to the purse. No refunds will be made whether an animal competes or eligibility is discontinued.
Maintaining Eligibility: Eligibility after an animal has been nominated is maintained by making subsequent payment by due dates as specified. Any animal sold after being nominated will remain eligible, as long as the animal meets all other Pennsylvania Holstein Show eligibility requirements. The owner will be notified when payments are due. Failure to make the next payment cancels eligibility.

From the President’s John (Jack) Remsberg, Jr. among Five Industry Desk — by Dean Jackson Pioneers elected to National Dairy Hall of Fame National Dairy Shrine has the privilege to honor John (Jack) Remsberg, Jr. for his service to the dairy industry with the coveted Pioneer Award. This gentleman is an outstanding representative of the dairy industry and the individuals recognized as Pioneers of the National Dairy Shrine only adds to the honor roll of leaders in the National Dairy Hall of Fame. John (Jack) Remsberg, Jr. of Middletown, Maryland has been a pioneer in the art of dairy cattle photography. Jack started his career on his family’s Maryland dairy farm and was a leader in Maryland FFA activities. Through a stint in the US Air Force during the Korean War as a first Lieutenant, based in Anchorage, Alaska, Remsberg began photographing scenic landscapes. His neighbor, who was a native Alaskan, taught him how to process film and create photographs. Upon returning to his family farm in 1954, Remsberg started taking photographs regularly with a camera inherited by his wife, Marcia. By taking photos of his favorite animals on the farm, Remsberg taught himself everything about photographing from positioning cattle to developing film. He enjoyed photographing cattle so much that he took pictures of cattle his family consigned in sales. Soon after his prints were published in sale catalogs, the dairy community recognized the quality and expertise of his photographs. Because of his sincere passion, constant patience and dedication to take the best possible photograph, Remsberg never had to advertise. His name spread by word-ofmouth. After 15 years of trying to photograph cows between milkings, Remsberg decided to disperse his family herd to begin picturing cattle full time. He built his large client base and embarked on his lifetime dream of photographing some of the best cows and bulls in the country. Remsberg had the opportunity to work with most of the established breeders up and down the east coast and was a mainstay at the Maryland State Fair as well as the

Obituary Lily Stoltzfus
Lily Stoltzfus, age 66, of Paradise, PA, passed away at the Mount Joy Hospice Center on Thursday, November 23, 2017, after a courageous 4-year battle with cancer. She was the wife of Alvin S. Stoltzfus, with home she celebrated 42 years of marriage on August 23rd. They owned Dunwood Holsteins of Oxford, PA. She was born in Bremen, IN, to the late William and Esther (Smoke) Chupp. She received Jesus as her Savior and faithfully followed the Lord. She was a member of Mine Road Amish Mennonite Church of Gap, PA, where she loyally supported her husband in his role as bishop. Lily found fulfillment in being a home school mom and serving her family. She enjoyed gardening, serving others with her gift of hospitality, and taking walks with her dear husband. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are five children: Rosalyn, wife of Lamar Stoltzfus of Lititz, PA; Dwayne,
Brent and Stacey Copenhaver of Tal-View Farm in Lebanon, Pa., attended the Philadelphia Eagles Fuel Up to Play 60 training camp with former player Mike Quick.

Students Fuel Up! ADA North East hosted seven Fuel Up to Play 60 training camps last fall with our dairy farmers and NFL partners. More than 1,200 students enrolled in their school’s program, along with 325 advisors, were selected to attend the camps. They competed in an innovation challenge, developing and presenting a pitch to the farmers and NFL players to help make their schools healthier. Dairy is the “fuel up” part of the program that encourages healthy eating along with 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Dairy farmers attended each event to help kids make the connection between their food and their plates, and the NFL players supported the messaging. Milk was donated by local processors for the students to enjoy at each event, in addition to yogurt parfaits and cheese sticks.
